What is a drop zone for?

Hi folks. I'm a little confused in iDVD6 about what a drop zone is for. Is this to link to a submenu or movie or is it just a graphic as part of the menu? Super confused here. Trying to make my first DVD and it's not cooperating. Thanks.

  • How do I get pics into Drop Zones for Templates?

I am having a problem that is probably simple, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out. I opened a templated in Motion and noticed that some of the templates have drop zones, a la iDVD.
Okay, so I found some pics in the browser but when I went to drag them into the drop zone, the image did not go into into the drop zone, and instead a new layer was created. I've tried this countless times and can't seem to gt the pictures to go in the drop zones.
    Am I doing anything wrong?

The problem is one of interpretation. What you are seeing are grey "replace media" items which need to be replaced with what you want. They aren't 'drop zones' ala IDVD or DVDSP (basically it's an image with a mask or overlay over it giving it that 'drop zone' look)
There are many ways of changing/replacing the "media" items (this is Apple after all ;):
    1) If you press F5, you open up the "Layers/Media/Audio" window. Click "Media" and you'll see all the elements used to make up the template, including "replace 1.jpg" etc.
2)Click on one of the "replace" files. Then click the "Inspector" tab in the Browser window. Then you'll see a window that says "Linked Objects." and below that "replace media file." Click "Replace media File" and then choose the file you want to insert/replace (you'll have to de-select "Show Matching Names Only" to be able to replace it with your own file)
    OR:
    1) press F6 and open the Timeline window.
    2) Scroll down and you will see a layer called "Replace"
    3) Open up that layer (click the triangle) and you will see Replace 1, Replace 2, etc (depends on your template)
    4) Drag the image you want to insert/replace into the template to the sublayer called "replace 1" etc.
There are other ways, but these two are the most 'stable' I have found.

  • MOTION 4 - I can't locate correct drop zones for template

I'm working in MOTION 4 and a template I purchased online.
I'm not deeply experienced with MOTION (one of the reasons I prefer
templates), but I have used built-in MOTION templates and those from 3rd parites
and other sources on many prior occassions.  I'm familiar with dragging
the elements you want to customice into the drop zones.
The problem I'm having is with a Calendar template. I've been
playing for hours now trying to get
the video or image into the drop zone.  For instance this template is
made of of a bottom part
that shows a January calendar, and the top of the calendar is the drop
    zone where you drop in
the picture you want to customize to represent January.  And there is a
counterpart for all 12 months and it flips through all 12 months.
No matter how hard I try, I can't drag my images into the right area of
MOTION Canvas or layers area to get it into the right
drop zone corresponding to the month I'm shooting for.
This seems straight forward, but the template is confusing.  I've tried
trial and error for hours now, but they're not
    ending up where I need.
Is there someway to see ONLY the drop zones in MOTION?  I keep replacing things
    I don't intend.
Any quick assistance would be appreciated.  I've contacted the 3rd party I purchased the template
from but haven't heard back yet and on deadline.  Help!

    Yes, I tried xrandr:

$ xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024

I tried running these commands again and got output on the second monitor, but at the wrong resolution. The strange part is that the resolution I want is listed by xrandr:

  • Drop zones for both portait and landscape photos?

I'm looking to create a template similar to the Appletv screen saver. I can figure out how to stack the photos in 3D and do motion paths. My question is specifically how to create drop zones into which I can drop either portrait or landscape photos without having to worry about them getting squeezed or cut off. Or is there some other software I need to use?

Thanks so much to both of you. Mark, you are exactly right. I would like to be able to somehow dump a bunch of photos, regardless of orientation, into existing drop zones and have them look correct. I tried placing a portrait photo into the existing drop zones in the appletv motion project and it cropped it. On the actual Appletv itself, it does not crop or squeeze portrait photos.
Do you know of any workarounds to help me do what I would like to do, other than learning how to program core animation?

  • Trying to find  termplates with drop zones for FCP 6  Help please.

I'm on FCS 2 (FCP6) and I'm looking for some templates that I can use to create a short video montage. I wold like to have images moving slowly around the screen with 'firework' effects going off around them. I've seen this done with a template but that was done on FCP 7. This would take the rest of my life to do manually so the question is are the kinds of templates WITH DROP ZONES available for use in FCP6? I've searched around but can only find templates for fonts, transitions and so on. Any help much appreciated.

I've just realised that the template I was looking for in FC is actually available in Motion and I'd failed to install it, so I'm sorted. If there is a source of free templates I'd be thrilled to find them.

  • IMovie Drop Zones for Themes in 6 HD--Not appearing

All of the iMovie 6 HD themes open fine, but the drop zones do not appear. Any suggestions? Debbie

I have 'somewhat' found my own answer .... I did a re-install via original iLife 06 CD all iMovie Themes ... did a few runs to see how it all works and it does - they are no longer missing ... but, did have a crash of iMovie after doing several various trials using my Themes ...
Have reported this to Apple via 'Report Bugs to Apple' ... hopefully they will read it.

  • Drop zones in iWork

While using a template in iWork you can drag a picture from the Media Browser into a 'drop zone' type area that is preformatted for a portrait/landscape picture and it has a nice frame and drop shadow around it. How can I create these 'drop zones' for my own templates? Do I need to be a developer for this? What does it take?
(I know I can go into Photoshop and create a page with transparency for the background and do 'cut-outs' but I don't want cut-outs. They are limited.)
    Thanks for any input.
    iMac G5 17 1.8 Ghz SuperDrive, MBPro 2.16 C2D 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

"Drop zones" in Keynote are nothing more than backgrounds with cutouts, and whatever graphical fanciness has been added. In Pages, there are Placeholder Images (defined in the Format menu, under the Advanced flyout menu), and these images can have default rotation, masks, and dropshadows, but again the framing will be a graphical feature, and not a feature of the placeholder itself.

  • "Replace" does not work with drop zones?

I set up a project in FCPX using "dummy" stock footage - edited drop zones, changed size/position of clips, etc...
Now want to simply replace the stock footage with footage from the event browser.
Dragging selections from the event browser to the timeline causes the replaced footage to appear full-screen - all editing work is lost.
Is there another way to do this?

When you drag over a clip in the timeline you are replacing that clip - which is precisely what you are getting, so no weird behavior here.
How to do it properly depends on which generators you used, but you probably need to just replace the drop zone clips, which is done in the inspector. Select the title or generator and in the inspector select the appropriate drop zone and choose the clip you want.
In the picture below I am using a split screen generator with two drop zones for left and right. The left drop zone is selected.
Once I click on a clip in the browser, it will appear; the choice is finalized by clicking the "Apply Clip" button.

  • Pictures in drop zones look mushy

I have a menu in DVD SP with a movie in the background and a number of text based buttons, I am trying to place my clients logos on the menu as well and I am creating drop zones for the logos and placing them where I need them. Trouble is they look mushy, when I make them the small size I want them to be the pictures break up and don't look clean.
Is there a preferred format for the logos, I have tried jpeg and tga.
I have tried the same thing by making them real small in FCP and exporting that as the B/G movie, but still mushy.....
    Any help appreciated!

Something you may want to consider is making the whole thing outside of DVD SP (Photoshop or otherwise), DVD SP is not a good scaler plus what you are doing (workflow with text and the rest) means DVD SP is also compressing the menu.
In some instances DVD SP re-encodes menus and they can look poor - check out the manual DVD SP 4 (Pg 230 of the PDF) for certain instances (not all) where menus willl have to be compiled/rendered - try to avoid them if possible.
You can acccess the bits and pieces used by DVD SP for working outside DVD SP

  • Resizing drop zone photo?

I have read through this forum and don't see any answers for this question for new versions of iDVD. I am using 7.1.2
I have dropped a photo into one of the drop zones for a template, but the photo is zoomed way in. I found if I hold the command button down I can move the photo around, how do I get it the size I would like? Do I need to edit in iphoto or Photoshop before importing to the drop zone?
Always the small things that become so frustating.
    Thanks!

You can't do what you want.  The drop zone is designed to give the viewer just a hint or flavor of what the DVD holds in store for them.
You might try creating a larger blank, black image and put your photo in the center and use that.  It might put the photo in the right part of the drop zone with more of it visible. I've not tried it so this is just a guess.

  • Curl a photo (or drop zone)

I want to make a photo (drop zone for that matter) have a curve to it. As if I had a tube and wanted to bend the photo around it. I cannot seem to find a filter to achieve this. Is it possible? Maybe there is a filter but I am not using the controls correctly.
    Thanks,
    Brian

This may not be exactly what you want, but here's a still:
that shows the use of the Displace filter along with a gradient filled rectangle to bend an image. I used a copy of the same rectangle to provide some shading...
Here's the project so you can see what I mean...

  • Drop Zones and Final Cut Placeholders

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a generator in Motion 5 that I can use in FCPX.  It's fairly simply - a bunch of drop zones for video or photo content and a camera that travels through them in 3D.  All fine - looks great in Motion, but when I open the generator in FCPX and try to drag content (either video or photos) into the drop zones, the content just becomes a new background rather than filling the drop zones.  I guess I'm probably doing something wrong in Motion rather than FCPX.  If I take any of the pre-defined titles (rather than generators) in FCPX that allow one to add a video clip and drag video content onto those titles, it all works as I would expect - the video sits below the title in the timeline and when I play it back, the video is in the right place.  Why doesn't that work with my drop zones?
(Apologies if this is just a really stupid question and I've misunderstood generators - I can see that if I try to create a title or a transition, then instead of a standard drop zone, I get final cut placeholders to use, and I think those will do what I expect - trouble is I can only have one of them, and I want several.)

I thnk that Adrie is correct. Place the Generator in the timeline
    Then click on it once
In the inspector window, Top Right of the screen you will see the Drop Zone(s)
Click on the Drop Zone Icon in the inpector (see picture) and a message will appear
Locate the clip you want to load into Drop Zone and and click Apply Clip
    That should place it correctly
If you want a photo in a Drop Zone, then drag it from the file browser directly to the Drop Zone in the inspector
    Hope that helps

  • FCP X / Motion 5 Drop Zone Video Freeze Frames Only!

Hmmm, well, I've followed the other discussions here regarding what appears to be an on-going issue with videos not playing (freeze frame only - usually the first frame of the clip) in a Drop Zone.  I'm using the latest versions of both FCP X (10.1.1) and Motion 5 (5.1).  I created a video generator in Motion with 15 drop zones for use in an open for a project I just started on.  These drop zones are sliding left and right in three bands across the canvas.  I can't get any of them to display moving video.  I've used drop zones before and had some success with getting video clips to play in them, but in this case I'm batting zero.
Has anyone found a way around this problem?  I may just import the videos into Motion and render them there since this open more than likely won't ever be used for any other project; nevertheless, I'd like to be able to use the Motion 5 template as it was designed to be used.
    Thanks.

The good news, Russ, is that I've made some progress!  To say that using Drop Zones can be a bit quirky is an understatement!  Nevertheless, your Pro Res hint seems to have fixed my issue.  I've been recutting the clips from the master archived files and saving them as Pro Res 422.  The file size is considerably larger that the H.264 files, but since it works I guess I won't argue that point!  :-)
I need to do a bit more investigation of this next point, but it also seems as if I need to move a frame or three into the clip before inserting it into the drop zone.  I had just been taking the clip and dumping it in as is.  When doing that I noticed that in some cases the clip either didn't play (freeze frame) or it started at some random (or at least what seemed to be random) location within the clip.  However, since I moved the start point in 2 or 3 frames (end point doesn't seem to matter) so far, at least, the clip plays every time and starts from the proper point.
I don't know if this mattered or not, but I completely deleted the library with the project and event that I was originally trying to edit to.  Since it wasn't working anyway there is nothing lost and I felt it was worth starting the project "fresh", so to speak.
So far I've only re-clipped and inserted 5 of the 15 drop zone videos but for now, at least, they are all working!
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

  • Drop zone doesn't work

    I am using IDVD version 6.0.2 (787)
I am trying to make a DVD using IDVD, Magic DVD, using the "Travel Main" Theme Template.
Every time I try to drag and drop a picture from IPhoto into what is designated "drop zone 1" (on the right of tht template) it loades to the background not the drop zone 1 area where I drop it.
Can anyone help correct this issue?
    Coster

    Maybe you can help me.
I am running OS 10.4.6. I have installed iWeb. An icon is in the lower pop up menu, "iDVD". When I select it a window pops up "iDVD 6" with choices one being, Magic iDVD. The other choices are: Create an new project or Open an existing project.
A window comes up after I select "Magic iDVD". In the lower right corner is a button I select that says, "create a project". I select it. Another window pops up with a library on the right and a theme on the left where you can drag from the right and drop on to a designated area's on the theme on the right.
I have gone to the Apple store In Fashion Island and used their computer and the drop zone works there but, not at my house.
Got any suggestions and thanks for jumpng in, I need the help,
