What is a Fractured Block ?

Hi ,
May anyone let me know what is a Fractured Block, how it comes and what is its impact in the database ?
Thanks in advance.
Deep

Fractured Blocks a.k.a split blocks comes while taking non-RMAN online backups.
Read the following excerpt to know more about the factured block and its disadantages. Fractured block generally leads excessive redo.
==
Extract from metalink note : 76736.1:
Q: Why do tablespaces not require hot backup mode or extra logging
when using RMan for backups?
A: To understand why RMAN does not require extra logging or backup mode,
you must first understand why those features are required for non-RMAN
online backups.
A non-RMAN online backup consists of a non-Oracle tool, such as cp or
dd, backing up a datafile at the same time that DBWR is updating the
file. We can't prevent the tool from reading a particular block at the
exact same time that DBWR is updating that block. When that happens,
the non-Oracle tool might read a block in a half-updated state, so that
the block which is copied to the backup media might only have been
updated in its first half, while the second half contains older data.
This is called a "fractured block". If this backup needs to be restored
later, and that block needs to be recovered, recovery will fail because
that block is not usable.
The 'alter tablespace begin backup' command is our solution for the
fractured block problem. When a tablespace is in backup mode, and a
change is made to a data block, instead of logging just the changed
bytes to the redo log, we also log a copy of the entire block image
before the change, so that we can reconstruct this block if media
recovery finds that this block was fractured. That block image logging
is what causes extra redo to be generated while files are in backup
mode.
The reason that RMAN does not require extra logging is that it
guarantees that it will never back up a fractured block. We can make
that guarantee because we know the format of Oracle data blocks, and we
verify that each block that we read is complete before we copy it to the
backup. If we read a fractured block, we read the block again to obtain
a complete block before backing it up. non-Oracle tools are not able to
do the same thing because they do not know how to verify the contents of
an Oracle data block.
Backup mode has another effect, which is to 'freeze' the checkpoint in
the header of the file until the file is removed from backup mode.
We do this because we cannot guarantee that the third-party backup
tool will copy the file header prior to copying the data blocks.
RMAN does not need to freeze the file header checkpoint because we
know the order in which we will read the blocks, which enables us to
capture a known good checkpoint for the file.

  • Can a "shutdown abort" cause a fractured block?

Hey there, simple question: Can a "shutdown abort" cause a fractured block?
I'm currently doing some postmortem work on an old DB (EBS R12 OBA) installation and what might lead to a fractured block. It appears that once a fractured block is detected, Oracle Support automatically shuffles the issue off as a "serious issue within the OS/HW layer". I suppose as a DBA this means they can wash their hands of the issue and pass it on to someone else.
So far it appears that an OS level app could compromise the write of logical blocks to OS blocks. It also appears that logical volume configuration (pertaining to an older AIX install) could lead to fractured blocks. Yet another article indicates that an HBA I/O error could lead to this issue. And of course file-system corruption.
But...going back to the original question, can a shutdown abort on a database introduce a fractured block?

It cannot. A shutdown abort or any abnormal termination means that active transactions are terminated without COMMIT or ROLLBACK. When you start the database after a SHUTDOWN ABORT or any other abnormal termination, Oracle says the active transactions failed and rolls them back. You will be left with the database in a consistent state as if those active transactions never occurred. I suppose you could say that until recovery is complete the block could be in a fractured state meaning that the contents could be inconsistent. But once the database is opened, the block is consistent and not fractured.

  • What is voltage power block at Apple Airport Extreme?

What is voltage power block at Apple Airport Extreme? 110 or 220 Volt. Or both type support.

The AirPort Extreme will operate on 100-240 Volts and 50-60 Hz, so it will work just about anywhere in the world if you have the right adapter for the wall jack.
The outboard power supply provides 12 Volts to the AirPort Extreme at about 2 Amps.

  • What happened to the "Block Popup Windows" menu item in Safari 6?

What happened to the "Block Popup Windows" menu item in Safari 6?  Seems to be gone.

Shheesh!  Loki is saying that this was a very useful tool/option.  Is there any way to BRING IT BACK TO THE SAFARI MENU?  Not how to do it in Preferences.
What I am saying is: What incompetent is responsible for this build of Safari?  There was no reason to take that out... plenty of room in the Safari menu.  But if you REALLY want to know why I'm ******, Older people can no longer go into "Appearances" and change the Fonts and Size without knowing how to use terminal or how to make .css files.  (which doesn't work well anyway)
    This build is infuriating.

  • What's with the block system?

I blocked someone in a group I share with friends and I can still see everything he says and he can see everything I say. Why can't it be like I block him and he and I can't see anything we say no matter what. It makes blocking him useless.

    Same Problem here
IWORKS 09    pages, keynote, numbers does not send in MAIL (mac) because of "This message was blocked because its content presents a potentialsecurity issue"
its a problem not only on GMAIL but also Live, Hotmail, Yahoo, and other services...
The problem is that gmail and others haved yet accepted the latest iworks 09 files. its a problem that apple can ask then to fix but its up to the gmail and others to fix it.
    Solution!!!:
1 - Send it by exporting to office files
2 - Saving the files as old iwork documents
3 - Command P and save as PDF
4 - Save in icloud and send the URL
So you can still send them but have to take a bit more of your time
i hope you understand my english is not optimal
And if you have any questions feel free to ask me

  • At what levels order can block through credit mgt

    Hi,
At what levels order can block through credit mgt

    Hi
We may need credit check at delivery level and PGI level because if the customer limit does not exceed at sales order level but at the time of delivery date and PGI date his credit limit exceeded then we can block doing delivering the stock or block PGI for that customer .
    There are different scenario like,
    1) If you want to credit management on delivery level then it usefull in tranpoter bill payment is pending or not how much amt is pending.
    2) Also required on customer, if customer has not proper balance then you can use that.

  • What is the red block on left of Materialized View in SQL Object Browser

    Hi
In APEX 4.0 i have a few Materialized Views - all work fine, but when I view them in the SQL Workshop Object Browser, a little red block appears on the left hand side of the MV name.
I'm curious to know what this might mean.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi Jari
That is what is puzzling me, because if I examine the Details tab of the particular MV it shows as VALID.
The same shows when I run in SQL:-
    select status
    from all_snapshots where NAME = 'MV_NAME';
    The status is valid.
It is not a problem - just puzzling?!
    Thanks anyway.

  • What should the "raid block size" be

I just installed 3, 750 sata barracuda's in my 1 hour old 8 core mac. I am stripping them together with the OS to raid o.
It is asking me what "raid block size" to use:
    16k
    32k
    64k
    128k
    256k
The help menu suggests that for the most thruput, a higher number might be best...
I will be using this raid for DV & HD video with Final cut studio 2 & AFX cs3.
Not sure which value to use.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I would not include the OS with your HD & DV storage RAID.
And Apple RAID keeps improving so that you can use smaller default for non-video or audio applications as in CS3 scratch disks.
Booting from RAID has limitations and problems, and I would prefer a dedicated fast drive instead, and isolate the system activity as well which also helps.

  • What Happened to Call Block?

I had the Verizon phone service for 6 years and due to an error back in August I had to re-register for phone service. I tried using call block to stop telemarkers from calling me again but I got a message when pressing *80 that call block is not available.  Is that true?

Shheesh!  Loki is saying that this was a very useful tool/option.  Is there any way to BRING IT BACK TO THE SAFARI MENU?  Not how to do it in Preferences.

  • Whats with leapfile being blocked?

Increasingly we have been getting requests to unblock something called leapfile.  Here is an example messgage they get:
    Blocked site:     something.leapfile.net
    Blocked Category:     Business and Industry
    User:          DOMAIN\user@Windows
    User Group:     BLOCK_AVC-11-Executive_Management-Authenticated_Users-DefaultGroup-NONE-NONE-NONE
    Reauth_URL:     -
    Base64Decode error '800a0001'
    Bad Base64 string.
    /ironport/blocked.asp, line 78
Seems like you have to allow this in 3 places?  Thats a bit much isn't it?  You have to add:
    .leapfile.com
    .leapfile.net
to the URL allowed category where the user is mapping to.
Then you have to drill down in the applications block/warn/monitor area for the policy they are mapped to and expand it and change leapfile from block to monitor there.
Whats with all of these layers and why all of a suddon are there so many requests for this leapfile site?  I went to their corporate site and it sounds legitimate, so if it is legitimate why is it being blocked by default.

Good idea.  I don't remember ever hearing about leapfile before but after some research it seems to be a good secure way for people to transfer files, especially if it has accounting or auditing data or any other sensitive information.  I think that's what confused me at first because simply adding the URL's did not allow the site to load.
When you bolded AVC from my block message and stated "AVC=Application Visibility and Control" that also helps me understand and better decode a blocked site message.
Its nice that the aplications get updated automatically though, but I do love your feature request.
    Take care,
    Keith

  • How to Default what fields and assignment blocks appear for every user?

Is there a standard way to default what users see in the webui? We'd like to display certain assignment blocks, fields, etc without having the user go thru the personalization process. There are certain pieces we need to display across the board for every user and would like to set this up in advance of them logging into the WebUI.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi James,
With the business roles you can define what the user is allowed to see or do and not.
So you create your special user business role e.g. Z_USER_SALESPRO and then you can create a business role specific configuration of the views (add/ remove fields) or overview pages (add/remove assignment blocks).
If you want to you can also deny user with this business role the possibility to personalize their pages at all.
If you want to show information to all user in the same way then just maintain the default configuration in the enhanced component. As the WebUI always looks for the most specific key found within the configurations available.
Please make sure you work in default configuration of the enhanced component, else you change SAP standard cheat sheet.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Thea

  • What unsafe content is blocked on this secured website?

On some (SSL) websites I see that some unsafe content is blocked. But I cannot get any information about the blocked content. What content is blocked? Is there any plugin where I can see a list of this content?
    Thanx Jeroen

What secure site? You don't mean support.mozilla.org, do you? There shouldn't be any insecure content here.
    # Press Ctrl+Shift+K to open the Web Console. See the following article for usage details.
    # Press the Clear button.
    # Load the problematic page. For things like images, you'll see entries that say "Loading mixed (insecure) display content on a secure page" followed by the URL of the resource in question. I'm not sure what the verbiage is for blocked scripts. I'd guess if there's too much in the console to sort through, you can probably find what you're looking for by typing ''mixed'' into the search box in the top right.

  • Oracle insert transaction - what process reads free blocks?

    Hello,
I have before me the Oracle insert process described as:
    1. Read the data from the data file
    2. Read a block from the rollback segment
    3. Write redo information that specifies the change to the rollback block
    4. Copy the old data block value to the rollback data block
    5. Write redo information concerning the changes to the table data block
    6. Change the table data block
At steps 1 and 2 is the reading done by the shadow process (I guess it has to be the shadow process, but can someone please confirm).
    Kind regards,
    Peter

    Hi,
    IMHO,
There is a difference between "trying to understand" questions and "give me the solution" questions.
You are following some slides and you do not understand something. That is normal, nobody knows all. Doubts appear. You "research" and you do not find the solution or do not understand it. Use the forum, it is here for that. Perhaps the answer is on the manual, note ... and someone will point it to that.
Unfortunately, there are other "users" that do not bother trying to find the solution, read the manual ... They have a problem and <i>demand </i>an answer immediately, or they have a job interview in 1/2 hour and they try to "find" the answer without any effort.
The answer could be the same as in the previous case, but perhaps it is not so useful.
