What is a good book or CD for learning Flash on a Windows computer?

Something I can buy from Amazon?

Here are the results of a Google search for clipart for Mac:
http://www.google.com/search?q=clipart&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en -US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&pq=clipart&xhr=t&q=clipartfor+mac&cp=10&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&hs=ZRQ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Ao fficial&source=hp&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=clipartfo&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.&fp=71baaab10161ac2e
You do not get a virus from googling - just make sure it is a reputable site you are purchasing from. Many are free to download.
I don't use clipart myself - having a Mac and numerous editing, painting, and drawing apps, I create my own art. You can also usually purchase this type of thing in a computer store (big box store) - they sell software as well as hardware.

  • Newbie to unix / what are some good books

Hello Unix world, i'm very new to the world of Unix. Just got a sunblade (with solaris 10), and i'm in the process of putting it on a x86 machine also.
What are some good books out there for someone like me? I took linux 101 in college, but thats about it. I''m looking for a book(s)
to take me from the position that i'm currently in (equivalent to my mom on windows), and put in into a position where i will be able to take a few Certifications(solaris 10).

On hands experience is always good, when it comes to books i'ld recommend any O'Reilly book, like their "UNIX in a nutshell", even if i haven't read it myself i suppose its good :-)
I guess i could look around, drop me an email at abrante (at) gmail(dot)com if you want some more ideas about sun specific books.
    Cheers,

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • What is the best book in Java for a begginer?

    Hi everyone,
I would be grateful if you could recommend a good book on Java for someone like me who is a beginner, and has very little knowledge on C/C++.
    Thanks for your time

    Hi,
Best is definitely a relative attribute. What works for you may not work for me. However, if you are like me, you will love this book.
    Head First Java
Your Brain on Java - A Learner's Guide
by Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra.
You can take a look at the contents and sample chapters at the Oreilly site: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/hfjava/
This book has been made with the normal average learner in mind. It is not exactly a 'dummies' book. It is a smart book which uses the many ideas of learning theory well to help the reader "work through" it while having fun!
You can checkout Kathy Sierra's blog "Creating Passionate Users"
http://headrush.typepad.com/ to get an idea of the voice of the book.
Again, as I mentioned in the beginning what is good is a matter of opinion, goals and preference.
    Cheers!

  • What is a good external battery pack for a 13" retina display?

what is a good external battery pack  for my 13" retina display(macbook)

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • What's a good solid-state drive for my Pro 1.1, c.250-500gb?

    What's a good solid-state drive for my Pro 1.1, c.250-500gb?

I only in the last months learned about the XP941 as an option, and for all Mac Pro models.
And that was in the middle of a long thread that led me to look further.
         SATA Express meets the '09 MacPro - Bootable NGFF PCIE SSD  (  1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page)
So the adapter is cheap $24-52 versus say Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD ($295) which is not even bootable in 2006/7.
No need for $15 Icy Dock. Does not take up drive bay or any of the 6 SATA II ports.
Yes up until last fall/winter the 840 EVO was fine, I have half a dozen ranging from 128GB up to 500GB and they work fine.
In the past I ended up using the Sonnet card just for data (graphic library for Adobe and iPhoto) and not the system.
Options are always good to have.

Or does it? Because by purchasing Motion, you also get the Pro Res codecs and Animation. Will FCE be able to work with them if they're in your QT library? I think so but am not positive. I'd check with the FCE gurus in that discussion forum.
So I half answered my own question. FCE will respect the alpha channel in a PR 4444 file. But from the limited testing I was able to to, there doesn't seem to be a way to export it ( or other flavors of PR) as a PR sequence. It renders as AIC, which is fine. FWIW, it can always be exported as Pro Res via QT Conversion, but why bother?
However,  I now have to say – despite what I said in my first post – that I'm not 100% percent certain that the all the codecs will be available by buying Motion. I'm like 95% sure, the more I think about it. But I have too much NLE and graphics "stuff" on my systems to test it conclusively.

  • Any good books for learning flash?

I'm trying to learn how to use flash, and there's only so much I can learn on my own. I looked up some books on various websites, but I don't know which would be the "best" to use for someone completely new to the program.

I would recommend anything by David Stiller. He posts a lot on these forums and has a great way of explain the why and how of doing stuff in Flash.
It also depends upon if you are planning on learning code or timeline animation (or both). Chris Georgenes (who also often posts here) is a genius animator and has some good books too.
For animation through code I recommend Keith Peter's "Making Things Move."
There are also great on-line tutorials like at gotoAndLearn.com by the amazing Lee Brimlow.
    That should get you started...

  • Suggested books/video series for learning oracle sql?

What are some good books/ videos for a beginner to learn oracle sql?
I learn best by being able to go through exercises.
I am using Oracle 11g express edition and sql developer. In sql developer I have only one connection to the HR schema.
Also, can I connect to the SCOTT schema in oracle 11g?

    Hi,
The SQL Language reference is a great book, but its a bit dry for a beginner.
How about starting with the Getting Started and 2 Day guides here

There are a lot of tutorials here as well

  • Which book is best for learning Lightroom 5 for a complete beginner?

I'm an Aperture user and as everyone has heard the news, a lot of us are considering switching over. I went through the Apple pro-training aperture, logic, and FCP books and loved the format of those. I've been reviewing my options for LR5 books on Amazon and I see a couple, Kelby, Evening, and The Adobe Classroom in a book. I kind of like the classroom in a book format as it resembles the Apple book's format. Which book is best for learning LR5, from a complete beginner's perspective?

I would avoid Kelby like the plague. I didn't like his book, I felt his chapters on the Library module were effectively useless and off the mark.
I would start with the free e-book Lightroom 5 - Free Quick Start Guide PDF eBook | The Lightroom Queen
I would also watch some videos at Products | Lightroom | Adobe TV

  • What is a good book to help learn new iNumbers 3.0.1

Is  there an instruction book out yet for iNumbers 3.0.1????
I need help with iNumbers. Senior citizen who keeps a strick budget in Numbers1 I will be 75 years young on Xmas day. Yeap some Dimension...so Help!
    Thanks
    Dennis

    Dennis,
Congratulations on having this interest in lifelong learning. I know that you know that there's no magic pill or shot that will implant Numbers skills in your brain. And, you probably realize that there's no book or video that will address your exact needs either. The Online Manual for Numbers 3 is even less of a book than the manuals for earlier versions of Numbers. It's a reference guide which reveals syntax and rules for specific details on operating the program. There is no way to read it like a story unless you have near-infinite patience in following links. It's like exploring a maze. It assumes previous spreadsheet familiarity.
    Here's my suggestion...
Think of your learning expedition like any other large project in your life. Describe, write down, what your destination will look like and how you want to be able to interact with it. Then think about all the steps that you think you may have to take to do to accomplish your goal. Be very specific. Write down ever little thing that you can think of that you may have to do in the course of your project. Do this so that you can check these things off as you accomplish them and know what you have left to learn about so you don't have missing parts when you try to put it all together.
With your plan in hand, begin your journey here, one posted a question at a time. Pick one of the small details on your list and formulate a question that will demonstrate mastery of that element. Ask your question in a new thread here. Look at the feedback you get. Play with alternative solutions - you often will get many versions. When you are satisfied, check that skill off your list, pick another point and ask a new question, in a new thread. At some point you will be asking questions that involve combining concepts that you have learned earlier. We have participants here that have dozens of threads to their credit, so don't worry about the frequency. You can try searching for similar questions, but the search engine on this discussion platform is very weak so I wouldn't depend on it.
In a given thread, when you have reviewed the responses (ideas) and have tested the ones that look promising, mark the post that most significantly impacted your understanding of the problem by clicking the "Solved" button associated with that post. You are also allowed to mark up to two other posts with the Helpful button. It would be nice if you could avoid marking any of your own posts with the buttons.
    Good luck,
    Jerry

  • What is a good book about Lightroom

Hi ... I am new to Lightroom, and am looking for a good book that covers the program's
operation and use.  I'd appreciate any recommendations y'all might have.  Thanks!
    /kim
PS: Sorry if this is an FAQ, but the search function isn't working, and I did not see any
           recommendations in the FAQ thread.

I think one of the major problems I have with Kelby's books is that he doesn't explain much about what his photos are showing you.  This is a major drawback to his book, as his text ends up being totally misleading because he is assuming things about your setup.
For example, we get people on here who claim Kelby recommends all images in a single directory.
We got that enough that I went and actually read that section of his book, to see what he is really doing.
Turns out he recommends what most of us do here, using a *top-level* directory to hold all of your folders in date orgainzed format.  But, since he is using the default LR date organiztion, it only shows up in his image captures of what he is doing, it doesnt' showup in his text.  Thus people read that to mean all images in a single folder, which causes all sorts of problems as they go forward.
    Because of those types of lazy misunderstandings, I can not and do not recommend his books, even if I thought they were better than Martin's, which I don't. :}
    Cheers!
