What is a good gate to use for vocals? Help!

Hi Guys
I'm still relatively new to Logic... I'd love some advice from those more experienced...
What is the best way to eliminate background noise from the spaces between words on a vocal part? I experimented with some of the gate options, but I ended up just making the vocal part really quiet (and even then if I turned up my headphone amp, I could still hear the hisses and foot shuffles of the singer, in between the sung words)...
Does anyone have some advice on (a) which gate in Logic I should use, and (b) some good settings to try to get a cleaned-up vocal take that has silence in between the words, without sounding too quiet or too un-natural?
If anyone can point me to some useful info on this or make suggestions, I'd be very grateful!
Cheers and thank you,
Mike

I'm probably in a minority, but I don't like using gates on vocals. I'd much rather take the time and manually clean up vocal tracks in the sample editor, taking out noises, pops, background noises, reducing breath sounds, changing gain etc. Although it takes much longer of course, I prefer the results which sound much better and more natural to me. With a bit of practice, you can zip through tracks quite quickly.

My old 6100 AV worked great on A10 ATTACK, back in 1993.
whats a good set up now a days?
I havent seen any MAC set ups as a lot of the after market accessories are on  Windows platform.
Is there a way or should I get a dedicated simulator on PC?

The fact that USB flight input devices appear to Windows only is not a limitation; for Mac most are programmed through the sim itself. I know X-Plane does that.
I've simmed a lot and know that good sims need a lot of processor and video hardware horsepower, and you'll also need a lot of RAM. They also run up the internal temps. A Mac Pro has better cooling than an iMac. You can get a program like SMCFanControl to manually set up the fans speeds before starting the sim.
I know of no sims today that will still run on a PowerPC Mac (2005 and earlier) so you need to look to an Intel Mac with top specs. If looking at iMacs, start by looking for the quad-core i7 processor. Those models usually came with an up-rated video card. Thing 12 to 16GB RAM.
My 2010 iMac has the 2.93gHz i7 processor, video hardware (ATI 5750) with 1TB VRAM, and 12 GB of RAM. It runs the x-Plane 10 demo fine but I've not bought the full version because v10 seems to make foot pedals darned near mandatory, and I don't want $100 worth of pedals under my regular work desk at the moment.

  • What's the best flash to use for nighttime sports games?

What's the best flash to use for nighttime sporting events? I have a rebel XT and I'm pushing it to its limits trying to stop the action. I've tried a speedlite 430 but it didn't have a hook up for an external battery pack and I was told I'd need the extra power. Just tried the 580ex ll on Friday but at the 1/1 setting, it didn't flash for each frame in a burst, even with the external power. I should have backed it down to 1/4 but didn't know at the time. Any thought on a really good flash for night sports? Is the 580 a good choice?

JUst as Tim_S said. YOu will want a external battery pack. Unforatannly the 430 does not have the option to plug in a external battery pack so will want to pick up a 580 or one of the new 600 series.
Then you start looking at the battery packs. I recommend Quantum power packs

    What's a good solid-state drive for my Pro 1.1, c.250-500gb?

I only in the last months learned about the XP941 as an option, and for all Mac Pro models.
And that was in the middle of a long thread that led me to look further.
         SATA Express meets the '09 MacPro - Bootable NGFF PCIE SSD  (  1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page)
So the adapter is cheap $24-52 versus say Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD ($295) which is not even bootable in 2006/7.
No need for $15 Icy Dock. Does not take up drive bay or any of the 6 SATA II ports.
Yes up until last fall/winter the 840 EVO was fine, I have half a dozen ranging from 128GB up to 500GB and they work fine.
In the past I ended up using the Sonnet card just for data (graphic library for Adobe and iPhoto) and not the system.
Options are always good to have.

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • What Monitor or Speaker do you use for Mastering?

    Hi,
As a home studio owner, what Monitor or Speaker do you use for Mastering?

Unless you have acoustically correct room, you will always have problems with low bass. That's why you need a pair of headphones that can produce sounds from 5Hz to 25kHz. I have BeyerDynamic DT770's but there are lot of others good quality headphones when you use that Hz criteria.
I use Genelec 8040's which have enough dip switch settings to match it to the room. They are also quite small (metal enclosure walls are only couple mm thick) and since all the walls are round there are no resonances or standing waves inside the box. That means they will sound accurate even at louder mixing volumes.
Btw the reason NS10 were used years back, was that they mimicked the average crappy home speakers, but still had tightly aligned sound. My old studio manager blamed all the terrible 1980's records on them, which you can hear if you compare them to today's remastered versions.

  • What thrid party tools are you using for backup compression?

I have a few SQL Server 2008 standard edition instances and I'm curious to what third party tools people are using for backup compression. I know upgrading to enterprise edition or  SQL Server 2008R2 or above will give me that compression but I do not
have that option right now. I'm familiar with Idera, Red gate and Litespeed and I just want to know what else is out there.
    Thank you in Advance.

There are many third party tools.

  • What brands and type can I use for my iMac 20" internal Hard Drive?

what brands and type can I use for my iMac 20" aluminium internal Hard Drive?
can I use WD caviar black?
    is it too hot?

If you are replacing the drive because the existing one is faulty, that's one thing. If you just want more space, you should take advantage of having a decently fast and relatively small capacity drive in there now (instead of a huge drive). Get an external FireWire drive and off-load most of your user data there. Make your internal drive dedicated to mostly your OS and app files, with plenty of free space. That setup will make your iMac run more efficiently. I won't go into more detail, because I'm not answered your specific question... You can post back with any questions, if interested...
    To answer your questions...
You should be able to use any SATA 3.5-inch drive internally, but you should probably keep it at or under 1TB. The main concerns are power usage and heat dissipation. A drive like the WD Caviar Green would be ideal in terms of power and heat, but they do have slower (or variable) spin rate. I have one as an external drive (750GB) and it is amazingly quiet and cool. If I had to replace the internal drive because the current drive failed, I'd put it inside. I'll trade a bit of pure performance for the efficiency (including low noise), and these drives are more advanced with higher data density and larger cache, so the trade-off from slower spin rate may not be so bad.
You can check your current drive's model number (which is shown in System Profiler) to get the specs online. The stock drive in my old +Late 2006+ iMac is a 7200 RPM drive. The Caviar Black is a 7200 RPM drive, with a newer design. So if you want to use a Caviar Black in there, I think it would be OK.

  • What the "Local RTP Service" is used for in OWB 9.2.0?

What the "Local RTP Service" is used for in OWB 9.2.0?

    Dmitry,
The Runtime Platform (RTP) Service is the server-side component of Warehouse Builder that provides execution and deployment services. For example, if the RTP Service is down you will not be able to start Deployment Manager and will get the error message to that effect. RTP Service is invoked through a database job that is automatically started when the database is started and shut down when the database is shut down.
It is also manually controllable through Start menu shortcut on Windows or start_service.sql / stop_service.sql in [OWB Home]/owb/rtp/sql

what is a good external battery pack  for my 13" retina display(macbook)

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.
