What is a good html validator?

We had been using CSE HTML validator for windows, but they don't have Mac software.
Thanks

I also recommend http://www.anybrowser.org
http://www.browsershots.org not so much as validators, but as resources for verifying the look and feel is as uniform as possible.

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

Hi, thanks for this information about Firefox. Hope someone
    else may
    have an answer for Mozilla.
Concerning the validation errors. I know about the million of
validation errors, we are upgrading a site from doc type
    'transitional'
to doc type 'strict'. We have the site on a test server, put
    the
validation icon first, let it point out the errors, then fix
    them one by
one. When they have been fixed the site is published. (i.e.
    we are not
claiming the site is valid when it isn't).
If somebody else can reproduce the problem in Mozilla I
    should be most
    grateful.
btw, I am Adrian Stock (=Adrian.Stock22), do not know why I
    am showing
on the screen as 'domain unknown'.
Ah, perhaps I did not log in properly.

Try changing the ampersands in the url to & - it
    should then still work,
    and will pass validation.

  • Can anyone recommend good html protection software

    Hi all
Does anyone know of a good html protection program or
    extension?
I need to stop text & images being copied off my web site
by disabling copy & save as from the right click menus, disable
screen grabs, disable selecting blocks of text etc.
I've seen a few bits of software online but don't recognise
any of the companies so am a bit unsure of handing over my credit
card details. Does anyone use one they can recommend?
Also, are there any implications to using the software in
terms of search engines reading the text, or anything else
    negative?
    Many thanks.
    Dave

    Thanks everyone who replied.
In general terms, my question was 'without detrimental effect
to a search engines ability to read my pages, and without
introducing any browser incompatibility/accessibility issues, can I
stop or make it harder for the text/content to be copied', and is
there a software program I can use to do this?
This is partly a coding question, but also a wider issue that
I'm sure will affect many online businesses and I've not seen much
useful coverage on the subject. I know this might not be the right
place to ask this question, but does anyone have any experience of
deterring copying through legal action or other non coding related
    measures?
To answer the question about why people copy our content
    We promote a certain product/service range (I don't really
want to say who exactly we are), most of which isn't unique, and
can be found on other competitors web sites. (A similar example
would be if you looked at the descriptions used of products on
musical equipment retail web sites. The descriptions all come from
the manufactures, so what ever web site you go on, the description
    is the same.)
What we've done within our industry is to expand on &
improve the information we’re sent by our suppliers, to help
us sell the products better, and to help customers get to the
    important information quicker.
We're leaders in what we do and I pay a team of copy writers
to ensure the content we are sent from our suppliers is re-written
to a high standard, focusing upon the needs of our customers. We
have spent considerable time and money researching how user
friendly the delivery of product details are on our web site, and
it's one of the things that sets us apart. The investment of time
and money into this obviously costs us money, but it also gives us
    the competitive advantage.
Many aspects of our web site design, layout, content, even
keywords, are copied by our competitors. Usually the other web
sites look different enough to not be classed as ‘passing
off’ as us, but all the same, important layout features are
obvious copies. However, what I find most worrying is that some of
our competitors are now copying product/service reviews from our
web site which have been provided to us by our own clients. They
are posting the reviews with our company name removed and using
them on the same product pages on their own web sites.
Because the reviews relate 80% to the products, they
obviously feel they are doing nothing wrong, but often the reviews
also relate to the customer service we have offered, and this then
creates the impression that they offered the same level of service
as us, which we know not to be true. In turn, if our customers shop
around, the impact of our positive reviews are diluted by the fact
that the same reviews show up elsewhere, and the customer looses
faith that the review is genuine, or that it was us who provided
    the excellent service.
I’m sure you’ve got the point now anyway!
Because the content is 'similar' to what the product
suppliers send out to everyone, it's difficult to take an action
over the copying as it’s not always 100% blatant.
Because the copying relates to over 1000 product/services, I
don’t think searching for unique text strings as Alan
    suggests below would be viable.
It seems that the consensus is that it’s not really
    possible to stop copying?
One of the websites I was unsure about paying money to was
    www.antssoft.com/htmlprotector/index.htm
They claim that they can stop anyone from copying your web
site content to their PC clipboard, stop print screen, disable
right click copy menu option, and a lot more. They also claim to
    NOT effect search engine intelligibility.
However, they are based in china, not affiliated with anyone
I’ve heard of, and I don’t want to risk getting ripped
off or compromising my web site.
If anyone else can contribute to this or who knows of an easy
way to code a page to make copying much harder (even if not 100%
effective) and without introducing any negatives, please add to
    this discussion.
    Many thanks.

Degree is very important, but there are businesses that require certificates from Microsoft (this is essential if they are business partners of Microsoft they have several employees with valid certification).
You explain the title of most logic and the practical aspect based on Microsoft systems, to take the exam should know the system and in a practical and not just theoretical. So it can add a lot.

  • HTML validation

It doesn't appear that HTML validation has gotten much attention here on the Apex forum. I did a search here and in the OTN forums at large and found no threads with the phrase "HTML validation" in them. In any case I'm trying to go down that path, meaning that I'm trying to create an Apex application wherein the HTML produced passes validation using the W3C validation tool.
Interestingly enough, I always thought Apex did a great job of producing valid HTML. Turns out it's not so good when you check it using the W3C validator. There are all sorts of quirks that show up that don't make a huge difference in display or function but they don't pass muster in terms of standards based HTML or XHTML.
One of the things I found that's quite pervasive, and probably a relatively easy fix, is that when ampersands are inserted into URLs (using things like the #WORKSPACE_IMAGES# substitution string) that those ampersands are not properly escaped and this causes a bunch of cascading errors as a result.
So my question is this: is anyone out there from the Apex development team at Oracle looking at this? Or is it not even on the radar?
As far as I'm concerned, it would be really nice to be able to run an Apex app through the W3C validator and have it pass with flying colors. Does any one else care about this? Or is this thread just going to die a quick, quiet and painless death?
Where do you stand on HTML validation? Is it a moot point if your application looks/behaves the way you want it to?
In case you want to try this out for yourself take a look here: http://validator.w3.org/

It doesn't appear that HTML validation has gotten much attention here on the Apex forum. I did a search here and in the OTN forums at large and found no threads with the phrase "HTML validation" in them.[You did not find the right incantation|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/search.jspa?threadID=&q=html+AND+%28validator+OR+standards+OR+compliant%29&objID=f137&dateRange=all&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001]—there have been more than a few, [going back quite a while|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=951069] and [right up to today|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3956045].
One of the things I found that's quite pervasive, and probably a relatively easy fix, is that when ampersands are inserted into URLs (using things like the #WORKSPACE_IMAGES# substitution string) that those ampersands are not properly escaped and this causes a bunch of cascading errors as a result.[I pointed this out long ago|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1244310] for exactly the same reasons. If this was fixed it would be a lot easier to identify more significant problems.
So my question is this: is anyone out there from the Apex development team at Oracle looking at this? Or is it not even on the radar?Although the ampersand issue has not been fully resolved, there has been resolution or improvement of a lot of the areas that caused validation errors at the time of that post. However (to the indignation of the majority I suspect) I would have preferred more progress in this dull and invisible area than on more obvious enhancements, on the grounds that getting the basics sorted would provide a better platform to develop these new features on, with less possibility of [introducing further non-compliance in those features|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3228587&#3228587].
Does any one else care about this?Yes. See links above. I was trying to find the time to jump into that current thread.
Where do you stand on HTML validation?Coincidentally, I came across a link to this earlier tonight, which as it turns out is close to my own thoughts on XHTML and validation. Browsers are more forgiving than compilers (as a programmer I wish that they weren't), so (X)HTML and CSS validation plays the same role in my XHTML/CSS workflow as the first pass through the PL/SQL compiler does with database code, or lint-type tools do in other languages: it generates errors and warnings that inform me that there is something wrong with that code. If I can fix it I do, but if it comes out of the APEX engine rather than a template...
Is it a moot point if your application looks/behaves the way you want it to?Looking at the way HTML and CSS are used in the built-in templates, the solutions provided in this forum, and some of the projects I've worked on, that seems to be the majority view. Little or no thought is given to using semantic HTML to provide structure, or CSS that uses anything other than basic class selectors (even [<font> elements usually put in a Forum appearance every month or two|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=998662]), and standards-based development in APEX has suffered because of it. Arguments have been made that it was/is necessary either due to lack of (cross-) browser support, and/or to reduce the learning curve for those starting with web technologies. The former is (thankfully) becoming less of an issue, and I have disagreed with the latter point since it was first put forward: that was the recipe for [tag soup|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_soup] in the first place.
It would be preferable to be in the position where the level of standards compliance in our applications was completely in our own hands through having control of all the outputs generated by APEX, either through some kind of exposure of the engine, or a move to entirely template-based output. Those who have a preference or need for standards compliance would be able to make the necessary efforts and the rest could ignore it. I'd like to have that option.

I need to setup a PC app to use my iChat account. What are some good apps that will work with your iChat info on a PC running Windows 7 ?
    AIM chat?

    Hi,
The Apple Email type Names are Valid AIM names automatically.
The only thing you have to remember is the password has to be 16 characters or less.
Th @ symbol is a valid character in an AIM name as you can also register Email as Screen Names (like using the Apple ones). (I have seen a Hotmail email address used)
I understand several US based ISPs also "offer" this Linking automatically like Apple.
I must admit I read the original Post as to what apps would work with iChat - rather then using the name.
    For the points though.

what are the good ways to send a big file( 20MB-100MB) file to my friend?
    Thanks in advance

if this is with the internet, iChat is probly your best bet,
but if you just want a transfer,
plug a firewire into both of your computers, shutdown one of them, hold "T" and press the power button, the restarted computer should pop up as an external drive on the second computer.

  • What's a good external keyboard for MBP

Given that the MBP keyboard is so inadequate and Apple is seemingly too stubborn to give us a good one, an external keyboard is mandatory. However, I'm not sure what's good in the Apple world. There is, of course, the Apple keyboards and I'm going to take a look, but there are also some from Logitech and others. Does anyone have any suggestions on good ones? I purchased the iHome IH-K236LS, but just looking at it and feeling it and seeing that it requires a power cord is not making me feel like it's a good purchase. Plus the mouse feels incredibly cheap. Like something from a kids toy. And it requires two of the three USB ports (but does add two on the keyboard). Anyway, I'm thinking I'd better check into other possibilities, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

People have such different views of what makes a "good" keyboard, GTGeek, that it is almost impossible to make suggestions without getting a better idea of what your requirements are.
I grew up using manual typrewiters (Olivetti Lettera 32's etc), migrated to IBM and Brother electrics, and then nearly 30 years of different computer and data terminal keyboards.
In the early years, perhaps not surprisingly, the closer a computer got to approximating that of an IBM golfball the happier I was. Few computer keyboards seemed to have the "feel" or travel that I was used to. Despite this i gradually found I adapted to almost all of them.
I still have many of my older computers and I often get a bit of a shock when I use them these days! My favourite in days gone by on a portable was on the NEC8021a, but today when I use it the keys seem too sculpted and to have too much travel (both features I once really liked about it!)
The keyboards on modern MBPs , of course, are at the opposite extreme - flat keys and little travel. The same goes for Apple's own current external keyboards. I now use them all the time, but if you don't like the keyboard on a current MBP I doubt you will want to yourself. The feel is very similar.
The older white Apple Bluetooth keyboards had more travel , and more sculpting and a nice feeling of "solidity", but can only be found second hand these days.
I personally like the Apple Pro wired keyboards in days gone by, but, as with the white bluetooth they are now history.
I have two Logitech wireless and and a Microsoft USB keyboard tucked away in the draw (together with just about every keyboard Apple have ever made) . The Logitech and MS ones feel very "plasticky" compared to Apple offerings, but, as I said, I have simply adapted to the latter over time. You might find them fine if that is what you are used to.
On Mac notebooks my favourites in the past were those on the PB1400, the PB 12 and the earlier models of the MBP, but I've adapted to the current MBP ones now as well.
All of which adds up to the fact that the only way to decide something like this is to test them yourself, and, perhaps, to be prepared for a period of adjustment whatever you get before you can really judge it. Familiarity breeds contempt, they say, but in the case of keyboards it has always seemed quite the opposite to me. What you have been using most in recent times always seems to be the best after a while!
    Cheers

  • What's a good level to record voiceover?

    Hi,
I'm completely new to audio production, and need to record a voiceover. I've got my mic hooked up, and am getting a level of some sort. What I'm wondering is, what's a good level? I mean, I understand that the closer to 0 dB I can get, the better the quality of the sound. But, in practical terms, as one's voice fluctuates, what "general" level should I shoot for? How much level is too little?
It seems that subtle movements of my head in relation to the microphone, or a little extra "energy", and I get clipped. Can anyone offer any suggestions/advice?
    Thanks,
    Vic

To add a limiter to the selected track click on the 'i' button on bottom right of GB.
The Info Pane opens. Here you can add/Edit the effects on the Real Instrument Track. You should find the 'AUPeakLimiter' is what you are looking for.
