What is a good rate to Record at if you are doing something for someone big

96? or 44.1 is fine....NOTE: im not doing like vocals really just the beat

no, your totally wrong. working in 44.1 is a bad idea unless your doing a demo or something. i'd like to know why your qualified to give out advice like "the difference in 48 and 44 is negligible?"
Hmm - questioning someone's qualifications while demonstrating a lack of understanding in the same sentence is a bit offhand, I think...
you should record the highest bits and sample rate you can. the end.
You are incorrect, sir.
Audio recorded at higher sample rate and bit maintains better fidelity. . . so when you reduce the quality your doing so from a better recording.
This is a over simplification and is a bit naive.
There are rules of thumb, but blindly saying "use the best you can" is impractical. What you should do is "use the most appropriate settings for your project", and this will vary.
Most audio productions that are destined for CD should be done at 44.1KHz, to avoid the need for sample rate converting, which are generally to be avoided (even if the best algorithms are pretty good these days).
(Does it make a different in a mp3 world.? A topic for another day I think... )
Most audio production for video, DVD and picture are done at 48KHz, because that's the standard sample rate for these projects. If you have the horsepower, like the sound, and have specific reasons, then going up to 96KHz is an option for some people, although as it halves your available resources it's a big hit unless you have a big system.
But blindly saying "use the highest" is bad advice. You need to have the understanding and experience to judge the requirements of a project, and choose the most appropriate settings for it.

  • Best Buy shouldn't be allowed steelbooks, as you guys haven't the foggiest idea what you are doing.

I swear everytime I try and go to get a steelbook from Best Buy it makes me hate Best Buy ever so much and never ever ever want to shop there because of how bad you handle this and have no idea what you are doing.
Wanted to preorder Ghost Rider and get the free steelbook but guess what they never even got them in and I checked everyday for a week after being told they were in transit on a Monday and by Wednesday was told they had been deleted by the system.  Well one good thing came out of that now I don't even have to bother buying the movie at your store.
Wanted to get the Warner Brothers line of steelbooks that you just came out but guess what just like Ghost Riders none have showed up and everytime I ask I get well 12 our on order for that title and that title and that title.
OH BUT THEY DID SET UP THE DISPLAY THAT SAYS COLLECTIBLE STEELBOOK AND JUST GRABBED AMRAY VERSIONS OFF THE SHELF BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO FRAKING CLUE WHAT THEY ARE DOING, THIS DISPLAY MAKES YOUR STORE LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF COMPLETE MORONS AND CLUELESS AND THEY WONDER WHY BEST BUY IS CLOSING STORES ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE RAN BY IDIOTS WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Aren't those Steelbooks officially out till like June 6th or something? And I worked in retail before. This may sound dumb, but sometimes they still want you to set up displays even before the items are received. You can't be mad cause they follow direction. They might of been told to fill in the space with items to look full. Honestly you're being upset for no good reason. Yeah, it sucks that you aren't seeing the items you want in stores. These are promo items so not every store will get it. Unless it's advertised in the ad, then you should be upset. If no store has any, order them online. From what I've seen, these extras are usually offered online too.sirdizzy wrote:
Really Best Buy can't take any culibility or credit for what goes on in their stores because they outsource it to another company rather they just make themself look like babooms by having something clearly labeled wrong and misleading on their floor.
Why put out a display that is clearly wrong and misleading, why when its pointed out to you by a customer does that same display remain on the floor (I took that picture yesterday not today and I informed an employee yesterday not today but it was still there today).

I RECIVED AN EMAIL FROM ADOBE AS  :  As good will gesture, we can help you with the upgrade for PSE 13. Compare with on-line stores. The full version is often cheaper than Adobe's upgrade price.
See this example from Amazon, but check pricing in your own region.

Adobe is doing nothing to your computer. We are, however, giving notice that our Workspaces service (accessible at https://workspaces.acrobat.com) is going to be shut down in a year. If you have files stored in Workspaces, you will need to download them to your computer before 1/6/2015.

  • What's a good level to record voiceover?

    Hi,
I'm completely new to audio production, and need to record a voiceover. I've got my mic hooked up, and am getting a level of some sort. What I'm wondering is, what's a good level? I mean, I understand that the closer to 0 dB I can get, the better the quality of the sound. But, in practical terms, as one's voice fluctuates, what "general" level should I shoot for? How much level is too little?
It seems that subtle movements of my head in relation to the microphone, or a little extra "energy", and I get clipped. Can anyone offer any suggestions/advice?
    Thanks,
    Vic

    Hi Vixter101,
To add a limiter to the selected track click on the 'i' button on bottom right of GB.
The Info Pane opens. Here you can add/Edit the effects on the Real Instrument Track. You should find the 'AUPeakLimiter' is what you are looking for.
If you need extra help post here again. There are some useful videos by Apple.

I personally recommend the macprovideo guys for video tutorials. The Garageband 08 and 09 tutorials are comprehensive and easy to follow.

  • What's a good interface to record voice/guitar tracks in Logic Pro

Hello - could you tell me what would be a good interface to record voice/guitar into a Logic Pro project please?  Thanks.

re the firmware update - there is talk that this should only be done if you are going to use USB - and also that it needs to be done via Windows.........I am confused re this?
I don't know about that, I don't own a Phonic, but if you only have to do it for USB, well, then there's no problem and you don't have to do anything, so...
Also when you say DAW (what does that stand for?
Digital Audio Workstation; Logic, Cubase, Protools etc are all DAWs. You'll probably encounter this term once in a while...
I just want to make sure and sorry if i sound silly but I should be able to use Phonic as my interface with Logic Pro without using Cubase?
    Yes.

  • What's a good program to record college lectures?

This may not be the right board for this, but I feel like the people here can help me the most.
I want to record the lectures in my college instead of typing. I've tried doing it with garageband, but after 3 hours the file becomes REALLY large. I need something that can make it a mp3 as it records.

Try audacity (free) or even a portable recorder.

  • What format is the best to convert to when you are importng movies or cd's

to Itunes, AAc Encoder, Aiff Encoder, MP3 or WAVE and is there a diference between them. I want the best quality possbible.

For best quality, use WAV, if you're on Windows, or AIFF, if you're on Mac OS. These are uncompressed formats that can match exactly the data rate and quality of the CD.
AAC is basically a newer version of MP3, but these are both lossy, compressed formats that discard information in order to further reduce file size. Another option is Apple Lossless which is also a compressed format, but without the discarded information resulting in a file that is pretty close to the original in quality but substantially larger than an AAC or MP3 of the same length.

One workarwound is to do the following:
    1. Remove the digital content from iTunes (but keep the files)
    2. Rename all .m4v files to .mp4 files
    3. Add the files back to iTunes
This seems to fix the problem for me
    Hope this helps

  • "Mark a good take while recording" Command

I can't figure out what this is supposed to do for me . . .
When I use this command, the current take is used in the comp (as always) but only until the point I hit the command any following comped material is cleared - then the comp becomes "on-the-fly" comp, which I don't understand. How is this useful?
Then if I "move comp to new track" (not the "on-the-fly comp") this "on-the-fly comp" disappears from the comp list, but if I use "Export comp to new track" the "on-the-fly comp" is not deleted . . .
Does anyone understand what this is all about?
    Thanks,
    James

Make sure you are using a cardioid pattern mic facing away from the hi hat while recording. I'm sure you knew that already. Like I said, drummers should be willing to compromise when trying to get a good sound.
Like another poster said, mic the bottom - that is where the majority of the "snare" sound is from. Take a foam coffee cup and put the head of the mic through it - it'll help limit the polar pattern of the mic further to reduce bleed from the hi hat.
When you mic the top and the bottom, reverse the phase of the bottom mic (or top, depending) and that may help cancel out some of the hi hat sound, as well as possibly give you a tighter snare sound. However, this does not always work - flip the phase, then flip it back and see how each one sounds.
After you record it, gate the snare, or pick the best sounding snare hits and use them appropriately to replace snare hits overrun by bleed. This is where pro tools Strip Silence plugin is exceptionally useful. . . I don't think Logic has this function though. Hope this helped.

  • Book on digital B&W? What makes a good B/W image?

I want to purchase a book on digital B/W photography. Ideally, it would contain information about how to take the quality of color images that are best edited into B/W. I would like information on how much contrast to look for when shooting, exposure pointers, and how to edit to B/W using Elements ( have PSE7).  I need pretty basic information, not super technical information that I wouldn't understand!  And, here's a basic question, "What makes a good B&W photograph?" Can you recommend a good online site or forum for B/W?

There are many ways to convert color to B&W. Newer versions of PSE have the Smart Brush which will do the trick (I don't know if PSE7 has it, I'm only on PSE2). For other methods, refer to past forum topic http://forums.adobe.com/message/2698012 where I give some examples in msg#4.  As to your question about what makes a good B&W, my only answer is that it is a matter of taste. In some cases a harsh contrast looks better, in other cases a soft looks better. There is no one "correct" answer.
You might also want to search this forum for "convert black white" for many more tips and methods.
