What is a great 1TB portable hard drive for a new macbook pro that works great with lightroom?

I want to keep all my photos on the portable drive while working in lightroom. Is there much speed difference between USB 3 and thunderbolt?

You might want to take a look at the LaCie Rugged series.
You can get it in both USB 3 or thunderbolt....yes, thunderbolt is easily 2-3x faster than USB 3.

  • If I buy an external hard drive for my new MacBook Pro with the retina display, can I play The Sims 3 on it?

    Hi!
I recently bought the new MacBook Pro with the new retina display, but since it does not have a dvd/cd drive, I was going to buy an external one. I think I will be able to use it to watch dvds, but can I also play the computergame The Sims 3 on it? If not is there anything else I can do?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can try formatting the external drive on your eMac using Disk Utility and choosing a well-known format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html. It's quite possible that your new iMac would be able to read it, but first, tell us which formats Disk Utility lists.
If you have those songs in iTunes, simply go to Music folder and copy the iTunes folder to the external drive. Then, connect it to the iMac and copy the iTunes folder to Music folder.
If they are not in iTunes, copy your songs to the external drive. Then, connect it to your new iMac, open iTunes and drag the songs into it

  • How do i transfer files an external hard drive to a new macbook pro

how do i transfer files from an external hard drive to a new macbook pro?

thank you.  i did that with my old computer, and it saved it as a whole other computer on my new macbook.  now if i do the same for the external hard drive, i guess it will save it as another separate computer on the new one.  so i guess what i should have asked is, is there any way to copy my whole old computer and external, but have the files integrated into the new mac, so i don't have to log in and out of 3 computers just to use my old programs or to see pictures or movies or files from the past.  ???  and i now have the apple tv and i have to turn on my macbook and log into the old computer to see certain old files and pictures or home movies????  there has to be an easier way???

  • Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version?

Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version? What are the negatives?

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it.  Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive.  However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.

  • All photos in Faces gone after external hard drive transfer to new MacBook Pro

    Hello all,
I had a upto date 6 year old Macbook G4 that I regularly backed up onto a external hard drive.
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro OS 10.8.3 with iPhoto version 9.4.3.
I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
With the following exception with iPhoto application, I have over 17,000 photos in the iPhoto library.
On opening iPhoto on my new MacBook after import all the iPhoto seems to be working ok, Places, library, folders, editing etc.
The one problem seems to be with Faces. When opening faces it loads and the individual recognised face folders are there, with perforated outline
but no photos. No phots in any individual Faces folders.
All Faces folders are greyed out, the number of each of the faces in each folder is correct with names and are again all grey out with a perforated outline.
Help and information on how to get the pictures of the photos back into the indivudual folders which are still in the Faces page but are blank.
    Thank you, signed "Faceless Faces"

I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
Exactly what did you do? With iPhoto there is no "importing" involved - you simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert as needed
With the following exception with iPhoto application,
You would do nothing with the iPhoto application - you use the new iPhoto application installed on yoru new system - you only move the iPhoto library as noted above
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many hundreds of millions of hours of work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can be avoided by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless thousands of people each year have come to regret.
Countless people think they're safe and doing well having a single external backup of their vital data they worked months, years, and sometimes decades on. Nothing could be further from the truth. Never let yourself be in situation of having a single external copy of your precious data at any time.

  • I have connected an external hard drive to my new macbook pro.  I only have read access.  How do I copy folders to the external hard drive?

I have a new Macbook pro retina.  I have connected a WD external hard drive, but have only read access.  I want to back up my computer, and have the ability to archaive files.  Any suggestions?

I have connected a WD external hard drive, but have only read access.
As ds store already pointed out, if the drive is formatted as NTFS, you can't write to it. Fortunately, the fix is easy, just erase the hard drive using Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I want to back up my computer, and have the ability to archaive files.  Any suggestions?
Backups and archival backups are not necessarily the same thing. An archival backup is to be kept indefinitely far into the future, and should never be changed after it is created. That does not mesh well with being on the same drive as a backup maintained day-to-day. Ideally, archival backups should be written to one drive - possibly multiple backups, but each one should never be touched after it is written - and other backups should be maintained with greater frequency on one or more other drives.
You can get a bit of compromise with an incremental backup, like what Time Machine does. That will keep old data as long as there's still free space on the drive, then will start removing the oldest copies of files to make space for newer stuff when necessary. Another alternative is the way Carbon Copy Cloner does incremental backups, where the data keeps piling up until the drive is full and then the backups fail until you remedy the situation. (This could allow you to fill up a drive and then put it on a shelf as an archival backup and start a new backup on a new drive.)
If you can specify more what you want to do, we can advise you better.

  • Hard drive problems on new macbook pro

I have a brand new macbook pro with very few applications and music and the "Other" section of my hard drive is 80/120GB? Can I reduce this? If so how?

First, your problem has nothing to do with Time Machine. Don't turn it off.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Looking for a hard drive for a 2007 Macbook Pro

I am looking around to replace my 160 gig hard drive for something larger.
    These are my choices:
Hitachi 500GB Travelstar SATA 7200 RPM
    Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B - 500GB 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM 8MB
    Fujitsu MJA2500BH-G2 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB
I am just looking for something that won't wear down the battery, vibrates or produce some noises. Some speed increase would be nice if possible.
I may pick the Hitachi 500GB Travelstar SATA 7200 RPM. But I am not 100% sure if this is a good drive or not.

I would choose anything that Other World COmputing would recommend.
But before I swapped out to a 500GB drive, I would make sure I had redundant backup plans in place: both an external local drive, and offsite backup.
500GB is an awful lot of data to lose when the drive fails. And it WILL fail at some point.
What can you possibly fill up 500GB with? If movies or music, that stuff may be better off on its own, small, sleek, 7200RPM hard drive all the time (plus an offsite backup). If you're editing movies, the professionals don;t use their main drives for that - they use quality external drives for editing and storage (plus, of course, an off-site backup).
Yes, I upgraded my MacBook Pro's hard drive to 200GB (original 7200RPM option was only 100GB). But I cannot fathom - ME, personally - filling up my MacNookPro's internal drive with 500GB of important data. I have a music drive, and work on other large work files on external 7200RPM drives.
Whatever you do, please have reliable, regular backup schemes in place.

  • How do I format an old Windows hard drive for my 13in MacBook Pro?

My hard drive died and I am trying to replace it with my friend's old Windows hard drive. For some reason, the drive is not being recognized by my Mac, even though it is operational on his computer. Do I need to reformat it? If so, how?
    Thanks!

    launch Disk Utility.
erase with Option GUID partition Map.
[If re-purposing a drive, I always prefer to Security Erase, Write Zeroes, one pass. This takes several hours to complete, but if it completes without error, assures that the drive has 100 percent good blocks.]
create a Mac OS X Extended (jounaled) partition with a snappy name or the typical "Macintosh HD".
You need about 30GB to install and run Mac OS X 10.6.8, possibly a little more for later versions.
