What is a kernal task ?

In my activitiy monitor, it is showing a kernal task showing a static 84.32mb real memory and 951.51 mb virtual memory being used. Like I said, the memory usage numbers are static.
What is this, and is it normal?

kernel_task is the core, the heart, the nub, the gist, ... the kernel of the operating system. Yes, it is normal.

  • 10.5.2 and Kernal Task

Since installing 10.5.2 on my MacBookPro yesterday, Activity Monitor shows a Kernal Task running constantly, using about 4% of CPU, with an rsize of 60MB and virtual memory of 1.09GB. It soounds like the hard disk is also working overtime. This has been going on for about 15 hours.
    Any idea what this is?

kdb1, do you use FileVault? I'm wondering if the kernal task has something to do with FileVault.

  • Kernal task 100% constantly

Unibody 17" MBP 266mhz. Got my new MBP this week. Have posted on MacBook boards but haven't gotten a resolution yet. Sorry for posting here but I need this resolved. When I boot my MBP which takes about 4-6 mins. I go to Activity monitor and kernal tasks gives me a reading of at least 100%. This is even without opening any app. I looked in console and didn't see any errors. I am running presently in better performance, but it happens in the other mode also. If I boot in safe mode activity monitor is fine, looks normal. I did a reinstall but that didn't work. I ran TechTool pro and it didn't come up with any errors. I don't know what else to do
Forgot to mention I did a migration from old intel MBP

I'm not seeing anything, besides kernal_task, that is out of the ordinary.
Spotlight will show a dot in the center of the magnifying glass in your toolbar. If you click the magnifying glass, it will display information about how far along in the indexing process (if it is indeed indexing. If it isn't indexing, it will only display the search field)
I posited bad RAM because that might cause issues. I doubt it though. How large is your internal drive? At this point, I feel it has something to do with a bad migration. I would try to add a 2nd partition to your boot drive and do a clean install of Leopard on it (minimum install, you don't need to install printers, etc.) If your drive is large enough (at least 15 GB free), launch Disk Utility and select your boot disk (not volume, the boot disk will have some numbers beside it and not Macintosh HD.) Next click on the Partition Tab. On the left side of the Partition tab there is a graphic for the Volume Scheme, click on the little '+' sign on the lower left. You can drag the slider in the middle of the graphic to size the 2nd partition. Click Apply. Proceed to install OS X from your install disks to this 2nd partition. If the system performs normally on this 2nd partition, we know your primary OS has something in it that is causing problems. If it behaves the same as the primary, we probably have a hardware issue (I doubt this.) If the 2nd system works properly, I would get an external hard drive, clone your boot drive to the external using either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! (Boot the external clone to make sure it works) Re-partition and Erase your internal drive and do a clean install on your internal. You can then try to migrate your settings from the external at this point.
    Let me know...

  • Kernal Task is increasing and it's decreasing my FREE RAM

    Hi...
I've been noticing my RAM decreasing faster than before I installed the OS update to 10.4.9. I was looking at the Activity Monitor. I saw that the Kernal_Task activity is tremendously higher than the rest of the "Process Name." Is that normal? Also, when I launch any application, the Kernal-task increases even more and it doesn't decrease when I quit an application. Is that normal, too? My total RAM is 4.5 gigs.

  • Kernal-Task up to 300%

    HI , This is aamir , i am running a macbookpro 13" corei5 early 2011
i am having a issue form last 20 days , that kernal-task boost up to 300%
i changed OS up to 10.7 lion but with same result , my laptop is not working
normally , speed is slow , fan speed is fast , i changed Ram , Hard disk  but
still same problem , i also reset the SMC but no result .pls tell me that
where is the problem and how i got fix it ,
    Thanks

Sounds like a runaway process from a program you installed, log in item etc. a software issue you restored back with that's corrupt.
Looks like you'll need a Fresh install.
Go through this, should help immensly.

  • I have a Kernal Task that is eating my memory it a root user

I upgraded to mavericks and found my mac book pro really sluggish from boot up whenever i try to complete any tasks from using photoshop to safari it takes too long and i get the spinning wheel
I spent a whole afternoon with an apple genius who carried out all the diagnostics he had everything passed the only thing he found was a kernel task it says user is the root
his solution was to re format the disc and re install everything by dragging it back from my time machine back up and checking if the kernel task re appeared in the activity monitor this seemed really time consuming and i am not carrying all my software instillation discs and i had jut done this a month back (though after the re format i used the migration software from my time machine back up to re install everything on my computer i did do it singularly)
please see this is my system

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • What commands/templates/Saved Tasks do you add in your ARD3 Admin?

I posted this question two years ago - thought it might be good to revisit.
    Saved UNIX commands:
+good for slower machines and power users:+
defaults write com.apple.finder DisableAllAnimations -bool YES
    +set ARD Computer Information fields; change -set1 and -1 to 2, 3, or 4 for other fields:+
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -configure -computerinfo -set1 -1 ""
+set ARD Comp Info field #1 to shortname of currently logged in user:+
    export WHOAMI=$(who|grep console|awk '{ print $1 }');
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -configure -computerinfo -set1 -1 $WHOAMI
+size of the currently logged in user's homedir:+
    export WHOAMI=$(who|grep console|awk '{ print $1 }')
    du -hc -d 1 /Users/$WHOAMI|grep total;echo /Users/$WHOAMI;
    du -hc -d 1 /Users/$WHOAMI/.Trash|grep total;echo " Trash";
+show computer name in Active Directory:+
dsconfigad -show -lu (local admin username) -lp (local admin user's password)|grep Account
+check battery condition - run as a repeating task on a smart group of portables, etc:+
    system_profiler |grep Condition
And, of course, all the usual nuke font/MCX caches, add Menu Extras items.. what are your faves?

    Easy one for system updates:
    *softwareupdate -i -a*
    Controlling the volume:
    *osascript -e 'set volume 100'*
    Addind Safari to dock:
    *defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '<dict><key>tile-data<key><dict><key>file-data</key><dict><key>_CFURLString</ke y>*
    <string>/Applications/Safari.app</string><key>_CFURLStringType</key>

  • OIM: what parameters for the task assignment adapter?

    Hi,
following the tip here: Re: how to use adapter to assign task to a specific user
I created a task assigment adapter and set the following by means of a simple java class:
    Adapter return value for key="myapprover2"
Adapter return value for key type="User"
myapprover2 is the login name of a user in OIM.
It does not seam to work, because the approval task is assigned to the xelsysadm instead of myapprover2.
What I else need to do to get it working?
    Thanks.

The key needs to be the Users.Key value returned in a string format to the Object variable holding the task assignment key variable.

  • OIM: what should return a task assignment ?

    Hi,
I have written a task assignement adapter, which returns the login name of a user, as it appears in OIM "myappr1".
I have specified this adapter in the Assignment tab of a process task of an approval task.
The approval process and the task I wrote are correctly executed, however the approval request goes to xelsysadm rather then to myappr1 as I would expect.
What value should actually return the adapter?
    Thanks much.

See I beleive that for a Task Assignment you must supply the target type within the adapter itself (and not on the Target Type field). Look for the following correction as well.
When you create this adapter you will find that there are two automatically included variables named Return Variable for Key and Return Variable for Key Type. In addition to the task you have already added for the selection of target user, also add another task for selection of target type. Do it as follows:
    - Create a utility task. Select xlUtils.jar from API source.
    - Select holdData for the method name.
    - Now provide value for Return Variable for Key Type as Group (this would be a literal).
    Try it out once again.
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • Kernal Task Usage High - Disk Tab not CPU?

Greetings support community. My mac is running awfully slow. Often the fan gets loud - spinning beach balls - and apps stop responding all the time.
I'm look for some suggestion as I travel outside the US for work regularly and CANNOT risk loosing this MAC just yet. I have yet to attempt to reformat/repair but I know that is the next right step before I commit to buying a new device.
Below is a scan from EtreCheck. Can anyone help me decipher this?
I'm resisting panicing - I know this should be fixable I just need some guidance on where to start. Also see screen shot of activity monitor under disk tab - kernel tasks are using up 2 gbs! That has to be insanely wrong right?

So I ran the Disk Repair in safe mode & out of.
Both were very clean. See below.
I'm not sure where to go from here. It was running pretty nicely in safe mode - I didn't try to open a photoshop though which will usually slow up my machine.
But I did open my firefox when I went back out of safe mode and my whole thing froze up immediately as the first operation and required a force quit. UGH
I closed it down - restarted - tried with safari - I can browse (weird though that my airport is dimmed out but I still have full connection to my wifi)
My kernal_task tho seems to be way more in check since I verified disk - but I'm getting some spinning beach balls still and firefox not responded.
    I dont have a....
    Library/StartupItems or
    System/Library/StartupItems
nor do i have a STARTUPitems folder in my private/var/run
    I do have....
Library/LaunchDaemons: should i delete all these? or some?
com.adobefpsaud.plist     I dont store my adobe files in the cloud - is that what this is trying to prompt? should i delete?
    com.adobe.switchboard.plist     ditto?
    com.google.keystone.daenib.plist    huh?
com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist    whats this from office? why is that opening on start? should i delete?
    com.oracle.java.helper-tool.plist     ??
    com.oracle.java.javaupdatehelper.plist    ??
com.wdc.SmartwareDriveService.plist    this is my backup - but I don't run that everyday.
    com.wdc.wDSmartwareServiice.plist     ditto
In my System/Library/LaunchDaemons i have MANY com.apple......prompts - I'm assuming these are not meant to be deleted?
But outside of that there are a few extras (listed below) - should I delete these?
    com.danga.memcached.plist
    com.vix.cron.plist
    exec.plist
    finger.plist
    ftp.plist
    login.plist
    ntalk.plist

    org.openldap.slapd.plist
    org.postfix.master.plist
    shell.plist
    ssh.plist
    telnet.plist
    tftp.plist
    WHAT ARE THESE?
I think the only things in my other row in my system preferences are
    -Java
    -Perian
    -Flash Player
any more suggestions? thank you so much for your assistance!

  • What is the installer task in Activity Monitor

My computer on boot up has 8GB of free HD space, its a Macbook Air 2011.  Sometimes, not all the time, i get startup disk almost full, I look at the Disk utility and the 8GB has gone down to MB and eventually reaches zero.  Fan is going crazy and it slows down.
I noticed a task called INSTALLER in Activity Monitor.
The only thing I ve done recently is install Firefox.
How can i find out what that Installer process is?

I recommend your first priority is to get at least 15% free disk space.  Probably everything will be nice after that.

  • Push Instance method : what to pass in TASK and Sync_mode

    Hi All,
I have created a Push Instace method for a Backend Triggered DO. Now i want to know that what is to be passed in its import parameter Task and Sync_mode.
There are no possible values defined
    Thanks & Regards,
    Abhishek

    Hi Abhishek,
    Adding to the above reply,
Task is an optional parameter. If you do not specify a Task, the DOE will dynamically decided what to do with the data. If there is already data for the same key in the CDS it will update it. If there is no data for the same key, it will insert it.
Incase you want to delete the record, then you will have to specify the task as 'D' explicitly in the importing parameter otherwise its not needed.
Also,if you do not set the SYNC_MODE, the function module will be executed in queue and the name of the queue will end with '*CMP'. This is just for tracking purpose.
    Best regards,
    Vinodh.

  • What is a summary task and how do I create it?

In the cPro customizing (spro), there is a dropdown called "Task Hierarchy" in the detail settings for a project type. It has three different values
    - None
    - Without Summary Tasks
    - With Summary Tasks
Does anybody know what the difference between the second and third option is?
How does a summary task look like, and how do I define with task is a summary task and which is not?

    Hi,
    from the online documentation:
Summary Task: A task in cProjects in which certain data from the subtasks is displayed in an aggregated form (for example, confirmed times and required qualifications). However, you cannot enter these values in the summary task.
You can only use summary tasks in bottom-up scheduling.
You specify in Customizing whether you want to use task hierarchies with or without summary tasks.
    Hierarchies with Summary Tasks
Once you create a subtask for a task, this task becomes a summary task. Some activities can only be carried out for tasks that are not summary tasks. These include:
    ·        Confirming time
    ·        Entering qualifications
    ·        Assigning project roles
    ·        Planning work
    ·        Assigning cost and revenue rates
Some of the information from the subtasks is aggregated in the summary task.
    Hierarchies Without Summary Tasks
You can perform all activities at any level of the task hierarchy. There are no summary tasks.
    Kind regards,
       Florian

  • What constitutes an "open' task?

How does the system decide which tasks to put in this list? Is it based on status, created date? A combination of fields?
    Any help would be appreciated!

I thought that was the case, but when I look at the open tasks on the homepage, it only seems to have ones for the current month. Is this correct?

  • What happened to iCal tasks in Mavricks?

Did the task feature get dropped or moved to another app?
