What is a "media server"

We presently have several external HDs (500, 750 g and 1 TB in size). They have never been linked. I understand that a "media server" (arrangement?) would solve our problem of "overcrowding" re: photos, DVDs, music, except I am clueless as to what is involved.

Simplest way is to run your iphoto library on an external drive
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Streaming from Flash Media Server into Captivate

    Hi
We're fortunate to have a Flash Media Server (4) which we use to distribute video over our local network using Flash CS5 and have encountered no problems. However, when I try to use it for Captivate 5 files I've had no success (same with 4 incidentally). I've tried just about every string I can think of with no ext., with the ext, f4v's, flv's, /mp4:, different folders/ no folders (vod) etc etc. There must be something fundamentally wrong with what I'm doing but for the life of me I can't think what. The Media server currently delivers video over our Intranet and we also use it for Adobe Connect. Any help in this matter will be appreciated.
My string is rtmp://breezefms2/vod/<nameofvideo> (no ext.)

    Hi Crozzer,
We have published a blog post detailing the formats to be used for streaming video.
I would suggest you to have a look at the blog post : http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2011/03/workaround-for-video-streaming-issues-in-captivat e.html and try out the streaming formats mentioned.
Please incorporate the URI changes mentioned in the blog post and let us know if streaming video works for you.
    Thanks

  • Linksys Wireless WRT610 media server issue, help appreciated.

Since I bought this router, the media server had been working okay.
suddenly one morning it stopped working and giving this message.
    Trial expired, please visit http://twonkyvision.com
I called Linksys customer support, (which is not 'engineering dept' by the way, someone in Phillipins)
they had no clue what a UPnP media server is, and what twonky is ?
Linksys routers come preinstalled with twonkyvision media server software, but this one stopped working.
    Any help ?

I've been havin the same troubles but i think i might have finally gotten it to work. TwonkyMedia is preinstalled on Linksys WRT610N and the "new" tab they created called "storage" interprets TwonkyMedia's actual media server pages into the Linksys configuration style.
    Type in your browser http://your-router-iport/
    Just like this http://192.168.0.1:9000/
It takes you to the actual TwonkyMedia setup pages in which Linksys hides from you. Click on the "Clients/Security" link in the left navigation area. I noticed that although it was set to allow new clients automatically, the client table was actually missing my Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as their static ip's.
Once i added them it worked again (cross my fingers). I can't wait until DD-WRT comes out with new custom firmware for this Linksys router. Its been good to me for awhile now but i hope this isn't a start of things going wrong with the router.

  • '[FAQ] Twonky DLNA Media Server Setup & Use

Some Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Twonky, And Some Answers The MyCloud includes a Twonky DLNA Media Server.  Sadly it doesn't seem very well integrated into the MyCloud, and the two fight for supremacy.  I've spent a long time trying to understand how it works, and reading the forum, I see many other people also have trouble with it. So I thought that, rather than trying to answer these questions individually, I'd try to write an FAQ covering the things I've found, and the problems I or others have encountered, and the solutions.
I'm not a member of WD staff.  I'm not a MyCloud, Twonky or Linux expert (but I'm moderately competent).  But I am stubborn, and determined to find out how to make the thing work the way I want it to.  If more expert users find fault in this FAQ, or have other insights to offer, then feel free to post comments.  I'll edit this first post and make corrections and add any FAQ&A that are added.
Where I am unsure of something, I'll enclose it in [brackets].  Feel free to investigate and confirm or disprove my observations... Where I mention control settings, I use a | to indicate a level of hierarchy in the menu system.  This is to distinguish control settings and file system paths.
Ideally, we'd shame WD into doing a better job of integrating Twonky into the MyCloud, so it's not such a struggle, and doesn't require Linux administrator-level skills to make it work properly. Starting the Media Server and setting up a Media LibraryQ. What is a Media Server?

    Some Prerequisites
You'll need to know how to use the WD Dashboard browser interface to control the MyCloud:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10420
You'll need to know how to use the Twonky UI browser interface to control Twonky:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3299
You'll need to know how to use SSH to log in as root to the MyCloud:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10435
Note the big warning signs about warranty.  IMHO, it's a bit off to make dire threats like this when you often NEED to SSH login to get the advertised services to work properly.
Some Unix experience will help, but I'll try to explain all the commands you'll need.  Experience with a Unix text editor such as vi or nano is assumed.

    Q. How does the Twonky service work on the MyCloud?
A: [Twonky is installed as a Linux service.  Like other such services, there is a service control file in the /etc/init.d directory]:
    /etc/init.d/twonky
This is called when the twonky service is invoked, and there are a number of options for the control of Twonky using an SSH root login:
    service twonky start
    service twonky stop
    service twonky restart
service twonky status If you execute the start or stop commands with Media Streaming turned on in the Dashboard, you are likely to confuse the Dashboard; you may get an 'Error 400162'.
'start' calls writeTwonkyContentDir.sh, which, as we'll see later (Q: How do I stop MyCloud breaking the Twonky Server?), reads the /etc/contentdir file and modifies the twonkyserver.ini file to set the media search paths and types, and then starts the Twonky server.
[It is assumed that the MyCloud Dashboard uses these Twonky service calls to start and stop the Twonky server].  Q. Where is the Twonky database stored?
A: Since Twonky is a service running on MyCloud, it is not visible in the shared space, so you have to log in via SSH, and navigate around the MyCloud's Linux file system.
Once you have logged in, use the cd command to change directory to Twonky's area:
cd /CacheVolume/twonkymedia Now see what's there with a directory list:
ls -l  Q. Where are the Twonky settings stored?
A: One of the files listed above is the Twonky configuration file:
twonkyserver.ini This file contains all the settings that control how Twonky works.
Now, this is where some of the fighting occurs, because both MyCloud and Twonky can modify this file...
When you are happy that Twonky is working correctly, I'd recommend making a copy of the file in your Public area, where it won't be mangled by MyCloud firmware upgrades or restarts.  For instance:
    cp /CacheVolume/twonkymedia/twonkyserver.ini /shares/Public/twonkyserver.ini
If things go wrong, you can reinstate this file by swapping the source and destination.  Q. What do all the settings in Twonky's configuration file do?A: [Most of them are provided with comments that explain their purpose].
[There are some 'magic numbers' embedded in the configuration file that seem to cause problems, and I don't know what changes those; I suspect that a firmware upgrade does it.  If anyone can monitor these values before and after a MyCloud firmware upgrade and report any changes, I'd be obliged:
    # UserID Please Do NOT change it manually
    userid=<redacted>
    # twonky info for Media Feeds Please Do NOT change it manually
twonkyinfo=<redacted>]  Q. How do I clear Twonky's database and start again?
A: If Twonky doesn't seem to be behaving correctly (not finding media correctly, or partially, or finding unwanted media), then it may be useful to clean up the database. There are a number of escalating actions you can take.  Starting with the mildest, and increasing in severity, these are as follows:
    1. Initiate a library rescan, using either Settings|Media|DLNA Database|Rescan in the Dashboard, or Settings|Advanced|Server Maintenance|Rescan Content Folders in the Twonky UI.
2, Initiate a library rebuild, using either Settings|Media|DLNA Database|Rebuild in the Dashboard, or Settings|Advanced|Server Maintenance|Restart Server in the Twonky UI.
    3. Finally, you can completely clear out Twonky's working area. [This can be useful if you notice the '[Error] - LOG_SYSTEM: Error: 2 No such file or directory' report in the Twonky logfile.  I don't know what causes this error, or whether it has serious consquences, but I have found it to be associated with periods of diffcult behaviour.] Turn Twonky off using the Settings|Media|DLNA Media Server|Media Streaming control in the Dashboard.  Then SSH root login, and hide the entire Twonky working area:cd /CacheVolumemv twonkymedia twonkymedia_bak Restart the Twonky Server using the Dashboard; it will re-create Twonky's working area with a clean version with default settings.  You can then use the Twonky UI to put your settings back in place.  You might try doing this one-by-one, saving the settings and restarting the Twonky server from the Twonky UI each time, then checking the logfile after the Twonky UI has re-appeared. Once you're happy with the operation of the clean startup, you can delete the old Twonky working area:
    rm -f -R /CacheVolume/twonkymedia_bak
The -f -R flags mean 'delete EVERYTHING from here down... yes, I mean it'.  nb. it will only delete the Twonky database; it won't delete any of your media.  But do be careful that you type the command in correctly; rm -f -R is a powerful command (-f means force, -R means recursive), and could do a lot of damage if you get it wrong...
    Q. Where can I find debug log files for Twonky?
A: You can enable activity logging using the Settings|Advanced|Logging control in the Twonky UI.  You can also open the logfile from there.
Alternatively, the logfile is stored in Twonky's area:
    /CacheVolume/twonkymedia/twonkymedia-log.txt
There's also a MyCloud system logfile that records actions on the Twonky server, such as start and stop:
/CacheVolume/update.log  Q. How do I stop MyCloud breaking the Twonky Server?
A: Firstly, go to the Settings|Firmware page in the Dashboard, and disable Auto Update: firmware upgrades completely destroy the /CacheVolume/twonkymedia area, and replace it with new, default version, so you'll be back to square one.
Secondly, we can stop the problem of Media Streaming restarts overwriting the Twonky UI settings.  Using an SSH root login, enter the following commands:
    cd /usr/local/sbin
    mv writeTwonkyContentDir.sh writeTwonkyContentDir.sh.old
This disables the script that MyCloud calls when it starts Twonky, which overwrites your settings.
Another way of fixing the settings is to leave this script alone, but change the file it uses as the source of the settings.  Admittedly, this will still override any changes made via the Twonky UI.  The file is found here:
    /etc/contentdir
Replace this with a single control line, with no line terminator, e.g.
+M|/Public/Music,+P|/Public/Pictures,+V|/Public/Videos This will select my earlier settings.
The format is a comma-separated list of shares and media search and aggregation control flags:
+ enable media searching on the share
    - disable media searching on the share
A look for all media types
    M look for music
    P look for pictures
    V look for videos
lower case letters enable aggregation of these media types.
The | terminates the media type string [you can search for multiple types in a share].  Q: How can I change the location of the 'Shared Media' folders?A: This brings us deep into the guts of the twonkyserver.ini file...  There are a number of settings that control where Twonky stores uploaded files and 'servermanaged' media, [which are used for aggregation], and there is no control setting for them in the Twonky UI.  To change the location of the folders we have to do an SSH root login and edit the twonkyserver.ini file.  The lines in question are as follows:
    uploadmusicdir=/shares/Public/Shared Music
    uploadpicturedir=/shares/Public/Shared Pictures
    uploadvideodir=/shares/Public/Shared Videos
    servermanagedmusicdir=/shares/Public/Shared Music
    servermanagedpicturedir=/shares/Public/Shared Pictures
    servermanagedvideodir=/shares/Public/Shared Videos
You can change these locations to suit your desired file system.  For instance, you could create a single 'Shared' folder in the Public area, with sub folders for the different media types, e.g.
    uploadmusicdir=/shares/Public/Shared/Music
Or you could create a Shared sub folder within each of your main media folders, e.g.
    uploadmusicdir=/shares/Public/Music/Shared
However, if you choose that option, you will need to stop Twonky searching there, by adding 'Shared' to the list of ignored directories discussed above.  Q. Why does setting a Twonky access control password prevent the MyCloud from sleeping?
A: It has been reported that if a username and password are set using the Settings|Advanced|Secured Server Settings control in the Twonky UI, that the MyCloud then never sleeps.  [It appears that the MyCloud continues to interrogate the drive in some way, hoping to get status of the Media Server from Twonky, but Twonky won't talk to it because it doesn't have the required permission.].
I don't think this is very important, since the MyCloud is mainly intended for home use, and the Twonky control UI isn't visible external to your local network, and all users on your local network must be trusted*, since you've given them the network access code, [and they have access to the Public area, and could wreak havoc there...] If you need to make your music library available to visitors who cannot be trusted, create a private share and put all your media under that, then enable media serving on that share, and get Twonky to search for media in that private share. DLNA ignores acces control, so DLNA clients will be able to see the media on your private share, but visitors will not have access to your private share via network file access. [However, if you feel that secured access to the Twonky UI is necessary, then I would suggest that you disable the Twonky server using the Settings|Media|Media Streaming conrol, then SSH login as root, and start Twonky using the command:service twonky start You won't get the media scan status in the Dashboard, but the Twonky Server and UI will be running.]
    * Breaches of this trust should be punished in an appropriate manner...
    Q. Can I replace Twonky with another Media Server?A: Yes; forum users hvalentim and Nazar78 have posted good threads about this:MiniDLNA for V3 firmwareMiniDLNA for V4 firmware Kudos to them :-)

  • What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
    Macbook Black (wife)
    Macbook Pro 15" (me)
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
    Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

    upfront:
I hope I won't be marked as spam now, since I am posting on a few relevant discussions now to this topic.
However, I really would like to ask the people who have experienced this problem to see if they were able to solve it.
    Now the real deal:

The linked discussion is a lot younger, which is why I posted there first.
I also put in information on the steps that I have tried and my computer specifications.
I am experiencing this problem for a while now and hope you and jones1351may be able to help out.

  • FCP to Compressor meltdown: What does "User aborted Media Server" mean??

"Final Cut Pro generated an error or unexpectedly quit User aborted Media Server"
That's what I get every time I try to export an MPEG-2 from FCP via a Compressor QuickCluster. Always worked in the past, never works now. I don't recall changing anything. Anybody ever seen this before?

I FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.
    I followed Apple's troubleshooting article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302845
And the last step finally fixed the issue. That is, manually uninstall all Compressor and Qmaster application files and reinstall Compressor and Qmaster from the FCS2 discs. Then run Pro App updates. Everything is running smoothly now.
This process does however introduce a new bug in Motion, but I found a way to fix it here:

  • What version of Adobe Media Server would fit our needs?

Hello. We are considering doing HTTP video streaming on our intranet. We have approximately 500 employees and would want to be able to stream approximately 10 - 50 one-way connections at one time. What version of Adobe Media Server would you recommend to support this?
After reading more about streaming, we would probably want to support the progressive download method.

But it can't create PDF files...

  • Pusblish Abode Connect meeting records (.flv) over Adobe Media Server - What is the easiest way?

    Hi,
my name is Robin Schröder. I am a member of the univertity “Hochschule Hamm Lippstadt” from Germany.
We r using the adobe connect already. We wanna create offline videos of meeting records and publish them over adobe media server. The offline videos are in the .flv format.
Do I have to convert the .flv into mp4 (h264 & AAC) before streamable with hds and hls?
I read about f4fpackager that this program can convert .flv into .f4m – but it failed with error 999….. I checked the .flv file with flvcheck before: success!
    The sample Video worked fine.
    So my question:
We wanna publish all .flv recordings over the Adobe Media Server (VODs). What is the easiest way to achieve this?
Convert .flv in a streaming format (mp4?) - HOW?
Create multi-bitrate versions from the video - HOW?
Create f4m file for adaptive bitrate streaming - manually?
Publish hds & hls URL in the html site (decryption for url possible?)How can I realize a iPad/iPod/iPhone switch in the html Code for HLS/HDS switch?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I am creating a small chat application using Flash Media server. I have already created all my user interface components in Flex(Adobe AIR).In this application rather than sending text messages user can also  send  file to another user in his friend list.
problem what i am facing is, when i am sending file through FMS most of time it send successfully but for some files while sending  application loss netconnection.
so i would like to know, rather than closing application what are other condition when FMS loses network connection?
Any help would be appreciated .
    Thanks.

Hi. It looks like your code is not finding the mp3. At least,
I can reproduce your error code by removing the mp3 from the
    directory, or renaming it.
Btw, if you test with FF instead of IE, you'd see the error:
    Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2032:
    Stream Error.
    at KZFlash_fla::Sound_2/KZFlash_fla::frame1()
    Hope that helps.

  • Questions on the capabilities of the Adobe media server and system requirements

    Hello
We need to send multiple video streams on different computers and screens in our organization. To do this, we need a dedicated server with the following functionality:
    - transmit up to ten (or even more) HD and FullHD streams simultaneously
    - manage playlists in real time without relaunching stream every time after adding items to the playlist
    - imposing of any text and video effects
    - use a variety of sources: a folder with pictures for the slideshow, video and audio files, video capture devices, video streaming from other resources
Is Adobe media server suitable for our tasks?
What are the system requirements (I do not mean minimum requierements)?
If we buy adobe media server, will it be enough? Or we will have to buy additional software products to provide all the necessary functionality?
    Thank you.

    1 and 2 is possible
    3 is not
4 AMS is not an encoder and does not encode or create streams. You have to use other software for that.Adobe FMLE is for live streaming...Use third part software like manycam(a virtual webcam on your machine) to generate video sources out of slide shows.
