What is a network interface card?

A prospective broadband/cable supplier says I need this installed. Does the straight-out-of-the-box Intel iMac have this? And if so, is it possible to say – given the limited information I can offer – whether I can still connect using my existing ethernet modem?

Hi Cheapster,
Does the straight-out-of-the-box Intel iMac have this?
Yup. At the rear of your iMac you will see the ethernet port.
And if so, is it possible to say – given the limited information I can offer – whether I can still connect using my existing ethernet modem?
Most definitely. Just plug one end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet port at the rear of your iMac and the other end to the ethernet modem (adsl router/modem). You'll also have another cable that goes from the adsl router to your phone line socket via a microswitch.

  • Change parameters on network interface card

    Hi,
Ndd utility says that my ce0 adv_100fdx_cap, adv_100hdx_cap, adv_10fdx_cap, adv_10hdx_cap are read only. Can I set these capabilities to read write??? I'll get a permission denied message, if I try "ndd -set /dev/ce0 adv_100fdx_cap 1" in superuser. My goal is to force NIC to work at 100Mbps with full-duplex operation.
    Best regards,

    Hello,
No, you cannot change the "cap" value. That is fixed, as it is the "CAPability" of the card's driver. Hence read only. What you can change is the "adv_cap .. " params, in other words, what the card is "ADVertising" for capabilities.
Some folks still use a startup script, but this changes the interface settings long after the card is initialized (since it has to wait for init to run). A bad idea if you are using IPMP or other processes that want the interfaces setup from the kernel.
The other method is to setup ce.conf. You will need pathing info from /etc/path_to_inst to construct the proper syntax for that file. i don't recall that file exists by default, but you have to create it.
Not using auto_negotiation is a very bad idea and I don't recommend that. I've sat through waaaay too many confcalls with waaaay too many people to sort through and explain the problems that fixing interface speed/duplex causes. I will bear those scars forever. So that is all I wish to say on this matter : )
    FWIW!

  • Network interface cards tested with cisco agent desktop and CTI Toolkit Desktop Silent Monitor

    Hi Guys,
My Customer is testing the Silent Monitoring, but, not is working. He is using the NIC Intel 82579LM, version 17.4 - 64 bits. I read the documentation the link http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/voicesw/custcosw/ps5693/ps14/prod_system_requirements0900aecd800e3149.pdf
but, the reference is to version 7.1.3. My Customer work with UCCX and CUCM version 8.6. Are there one specific documentation about this version? The link don´t show the NIC tested by my Customer
    Thank You,
    Best Regards,
    Wilson

    Hi
I've done lots of deployments of this on UCCX, and still haven't found a NIC that doesn't work. I'm sure there are some, but they appear to be very rare.
If you can sniff the UDP when a call is in progress, it can work. If you can't, then it's usually down to configuration - e.g. non-phone-connected PCs, span-to-PC-port, PC vvvlan access, etc etc.

  • Fake Network Interface - What Is It, and How Do I Get It?

I'm in the process of setting up Linux-VServer, which supports OS level virtualization. It's like running a VM, only instead of using an abstraction layer to create fake hardware and host another OS, the kernel just runs multiple userspaces and makes sure they don't touch anything they're not supposed to.
Anyway, like many VM solutions, networking is a bit funky. They create fake interfaces that seem to exist only in the kernel, then use iptables to mask them with NAT so it still works on a network. The trick is that I'm not sure how they're creating fake interfaces, so I don't know how to replicate it on Arch. Here's a page describing the process: http://linux-vserver.org/Networking_vserver_guests
On Debian, they add this to /etc/network/interfaces:
    auto dummy0
    iface dummy0 inet static
    address 192.168.1.250
    netmask 255.255.255.0
What are they using to make this work? Is there a good way to replicate it under Arch?
    Last edited by arew264 (2009-03-26 03:18:19)

I ran `ip addr add 192.168.1.4/24 dev eth0 label eth0:1`, which adds an IP address to eth0.
This works better than the solution the vserver wiki recommends because I can give the guest a public IP address.
Is there a way to do this in /etc/rc.conf or the network daemon?

  • What are these new network interfaces?

Recently I've noticed a few additions to the standard net interfaces (are they called interfaces or adapters?).
    Tertiary (en2)
    Quaternary (en3)
    IP over Firewire (fw0)
    IP over Firewire (fw1)

I'm not quite sure, but I believe the BSD network interfaces are en0, en1, etc.
Airport, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire, etc. are Network Services. Network Utility's Info tab and the Network System Prefs should say the same thing.
What do you see if you open System Profiler and click on the Network>Locations? ie What do you get for the names of each of the Services? Again, they should match Network prefs/Network Utility Info.
To remove a network service, go to Network System Preferences; Select a network Service, and click the delete ( - ) button.
I don't think anybody has made it clear, yet, that those are not normal. I don't believe they were created by the OS. However, it could be corruption in the plist that is giving everything fits.

  • [SOLVED] What is the equivalent of Ubuntu's /etc/network/interfaces...

    Hi all
I've on one of my machines a Sis900 Network Adapter, and with Ubuntu installed on that pc, i had to insert the line
    hwaddress ether 00:00:00:00:00:01
in the file /etc/network/interfaces for allowing the system to see the eth0 in the ifconfig list, and so enabling the network too.
I'm now trying to install Arch on that PC (or better, on a pc with that motherboard where that adapter is mounted), and now I've got the same problem. I'm pretty sure i can fix that like I've done in Ubuntu, but i wonder where i can write that setting.. maybe in /etc/conf.d/bonding ? can you confirm this or give me an hint somehow? thanks in advance
    edit
i managed to set the hwaddress with ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:01 and now the network is operational. Now I'm looking for making this effective at every reboot...

    Or if you want something more advanced;
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg
i managed to set the hwaddress with ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:01 and now the network is operational. Now I'm looking for making this effective at every reboot.
    Put that in /etc/rc.local
Edit; you might try putting it at the end of /etc/rc.conf, since it is a script really (as well as a configuration file), and also since rc.local is executed *after* all the daemons are executed. I figure you have to have that command run before the "networking" daemon is run?

  • [Solved] Network interfaces change places after every reboot.

This has been bugging me for a while, it seems that in Arch every time the system reboots, the network interfaces are recognized in a random order.
So what was eth0 in the last reboot will be eth1 in this reboot, and sometimes it will remain for several reboots and then flip again.
This does not occur in Fedora on the same machine ever.., does any one know how to work around this problem?

I meant why is 75-persistent-net-generator.rules.optional optional? or why for example on Fedora this is never an issue?

What could be the problem here? How come the card is 'UNCLAIMED' when the proper driver is loaded? Thanks in advance.

  • Asus eee PC 1005HA No network interfaces

    Hi everyone.
I am pretty new to Linux, but I have played with Arch, amongst other distros, in VirtualBox before. Today I got a nice shiny new eee PC 1005HA. I always intended to install Linux on it, and while I know that Arch isn't usually considered the best bet for someone without a great deal of Linux experience, I like The Arch Way™ etc etc.
Now, I had done a basic check to see if anyone else was using the 1005HA on these forums, and they had and said that everything was working. I guess I was tired, because if I had done a search for "1005HA" I would see a couple of threads with people having issues with the network interfaces.
As far as I can tell, for most people the wireless works fine with very little effort needed on the user's part. However, for me neither wireless nor ethernet works. ifconfig -a lists only lo, which isn't very helpful. lspci | grep -i net listed two things, but in the end I had to use google to look up what specific model was in my computer (Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285)
I have reinstalled a couple of times, making sure to include things like wireless-tools, and I am using the Core USB image. I have tried using the ath5k and ath9k drivers (at least I think I have—maybe I am doing it hopelessly wrong) and neither gave any results.
I would like to get Arch working if possible, although if not I will try Ubuntu and then finally Windows.
Thanks for any help you wonderful people can give.

There's actually a pkgbuild in the AUR for the wired kernel module.
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ather … d-1005-ha/
You can download the source and pkgbuild to a thumbdrive, and build them using makepkg on your machine.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg
This is preferably since it will be tracked by the package manager as well.

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter & New Network Interface Message

I am using the new Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter. Why is it that every time I use it, I get the following message:
"A new network interface has been detected. The Thunderbolt FireWire Slot 2 network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface, use network preferences."
All I want to do is mount external hard drives that don't have Thunderbolt ports to my iMac, via Thunderbolt because I am using the iMac's single Firewire port for something else. The drives do successfully mount, but why do I keep getting this message whenever I connect them again?

I have no doubt what you say to do would get rid of the message for me. However, both myself and an Apple Store employee think it is odd that the message comes up in the first place. We're both curious about it, and he's going to look into it.
We tested it on a computer at the store, and found that it happens on Lion too.
