What is a Network Location?

I just recently set up homegroup to connect my desktop & Laptop together and it works flawless. However i've noticed there is now a 'network location' under 'This PC' on both my laptop and my desktop.
I'm not 100% sure what this is for and how it got there. If it was automatically installed when i set up my homegroup. But it isnt very useful since i can just use homegroup to access files between each device.
Can anyone give more information on what this does and if i can remove the network location device with out it  interferring with my homegroup set up.
Thanks

Hi,
The first time that you connect to a network, you must choose a network location. This automatically sets the appropriate firewall and security settings for the type of network that you connect to. If you connect to networks in different locations (for example,
a network at your home, at a local coffee shop, or at work), choosing a network location can help ensure that your computer is always set to an appropriate security level.
Computers on a private network can belong to a homegroup.
The Public network location is designed to keep your computer from being visible to other computers around you and to help protect your computer from any malicious software from the Internet.
HomeGroup is not available on public networks, and network discovery is turned off.

Yes, this aears to be a bug in the App Store. I've had mine stuck on something different. But I can type a new entry and do a different search. So even though the old search term comes back later I've lost no functionality. So I ignore the bug. It will eventually get fixed, I hope.

With that particular variety of 1606 (it's a 1606 error message even though the 1606 error message number isn't returned by the iTunes installer), the following Microsoft document is worth a try:

  • Manage-bde command is not generating recovery key on network location

    Hi,
I am trying to save the recovery key to the network share location and start up key in the USB drive while enabling bit locker. When the OS drive gets encrypted, the default folder for recovery password shows that it contains 1 file but not getting anything
inside it when i checked the properties of the folder.
i have already changed the group policy as "choose default folder for recovery password".
I am using the command to enable the bit-locker as "manage-bde.exe -on C: -rk
<network location to save recovery key> -sk <location of the USB drive>
-rp to enable the bit-locker. It is generating the start up key in the USB but not the recovery key on network share.
Can anyone suggest what i am missing or what else i should do to generate the recovery key on network share.
Does manage-bde process be able to save the recovery key on network share or it hand over to some other process to perform this task.
    Thanks

I got you Manoj, but I want to ask you one think that what if i lost the startup  key or my USB stick. I have my recovery key on the network share.  In order to log-in my machine I need the recovery password. From where i will get the recovery
password(48 digit). Surely from the recovery key on the network share. So how can i get the recovery password if only we have the recovery key.
I know both are different in context. Both are two different thing. I have lost my USB stick along with the recovery password and I have to log-in my machine. How can i do that i want to know that. Do there is any method to get recovery password from the
recovery key on network share. I have retrieved the recovery password when the recovery key in AD. But this time it is on network share.
Also one think which I need to solve is that the manage-bde -protectors -add command creates a new .bek file along with the older one. So the .bek file which get shown at the time of the start up of the machine is different from that stored in the network.
So i am getting confused as which .bek file is for which machine and hard to retrieve the password.
Is there any method to store recovery key on network without the -protectors -add command line so that both the .bek file should be matched and can easily be known for indiviual machine in an OU. As if both the .bek files will be different it would be difficult
to to retrieve the recovery password for the machines.
Please do inform if you need some more information about the scenario if i missed something.
    Thanks

  • Error Creating PDF - saving to network location

    Using Acrobat Standard 8.1.3
I am unable to save a PDF to any location on our network.  I am able to save the file to my local hard disk.
When I create a PDF using the toolbar in MSWord for instance I get a the following message "The system cannont find the file specified"
When I create a PDF from within Adobe Acobat i get the following message "Unable to open the document xxxxx.doc.  Please check to see if you have read permissions for the above file"
I can confirm that I have full accesss to the shares I am trying to save the file to.
I am able to save other types of documents to these shares.
If I log in as a domain administrator I have the same problem with the same file.
This is occuring for a lot of our users and has only started happening in the last month.
    Any Ideas?

Almost every time this problem crops up it is an issue with how Acrobat interacts with the particular network software. I have no idea why, but it seems that the only solution is to save locally and then copy to the network location. This answer is probably not what you wanted, but it is all that I am aware of.

  • Invalid Credentials: The Network location cannot be reached

I am working with MDT 2010, and I am getting the error, "Invalid Credentials:  The Network location cannot be reached." When I run the LiteTouch 64 bit, I don't think the network is working.  It's like there is not driver for the network card in
the LiteTouch 64 bit to make the network connection.  When I hit F8 key, it brings a DOS box up for testing, and I found out these things.
     - I can ping the loop back address 127.0.0.1.
     - Cannot use the net use command to connect to the server share \\server01\DeploymentSahre$.
     - I can not ping by name or IP address the server that is holding my Deployment Share.
This is the first time I am working with this technology, and I was following a guide off the Technet library.  It almost like I am missing the driver for the network card.  I have Windows Deployment installed on server01, the server will answer,
and I am able to put in my user name and password,  it accepts and starts loading.
I did figure out how to inject the network drivers into Windows Deployment for the Motherboard I was using, do I have to do the same thing here again? MDT is using the Windows Deployment Images on the server01; MDT is setup on server01.   I would have
thought that since the driver was already injected into the Image MDT would use that as well.  So, do I need to put a driver into the LiteTouch 64bit image and if I do how do I do that?
thanks very much for your help,

If you haven't updated the deployment share after adding the proper drivers to OOBD then your LiteTouch boot images will not have them included.  Just right click the deployment share and click on Update Deployment Share, it will take a while but it
will rebuild the boot images with the drivers you've included in OOBD.  Then it's just a matter of either recreating the flash drives or loading the updated image into WDS.
    Another thought:
We had an issue with some HP's that had Main Boards replaced.  the BIOS time was WAY off and the UUID wasn't setting itself because the network was denying it access to our servers (because of the horribly wrong time).  Once we corrected the time
in the BIOS everything ran fine.  The error we got while trying to do the deployment was the same as what you describe and we could still ping various machines on the network too.

  • How to move the iTunes library to a Windows 7 network location?

    I use Windows 7 and iTunes 11.1.11.
I use a hard disk over my home network that is currently mounted on Windows via ftp using the default "Add a network location" option in Windows Explorer, so the content of the drive is listed as a folder under "Network location". File access / creation / deletion works just fine with other programs.
However, when I try to move my iTunes library to the network folder (Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced), I get an error saying "The folder name is not valid".
I don't care much if I have to mount the NAS differently on Windows or if I have to recreate my iTunes library, but it would be nice to finally manage my Music on the network drive.
Thanks to anyone who knows what I'm doing wrong!

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.
There are more detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451#
It will show you how to re-build your iTunes database file.

  • How do I set up different network locations with different wifi?

I am having an issue setting up different network locations with different wifi profiles on each. I want to do this to enable fast switching of wireless networks. In my house I have two wireless networks, my own personal one and one that is created by using a wifi modem supplied by my company. If I use the company wifi network then I can get into all my work applications without having to enable VPN access separately. It is also faster. However, they also block many applications including sending email from my personal email account, dropbox, etc. So throughout the day I need to switch wireless networks back and forth.
I was looking for a faster way to switch and thought I would try network locations. Was able to set up a new network location without issue. However it seems that whatever wireless preferences, changes, or wifi network order I put into my "Work" location it carries over to my other location which is the standard "Automatic".
What I would like it to have my "Work" location only to be able to connect to my work wifi and my other network (Automatic) to just connect to my home wifi only. That way I can enable faster wifi switching and can even use my launcher program (Alfred) to provide shortcuts.
    Anyway to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Just thought I would bump this up in the conversation. Doing a further search I came across this discussion which is similar: Connecting to a wireless network via applescript?
However, I tried to build the Automator application as discussed and cannot get it to work. Very much a novice at Applescript and Shell Script but have created customized Automator services before. All I get now is "Shell Script command encountered an error". No more detail. I copied and pasted the script as shown in the email thread. Is there any other line or command I need to place in front of it?
    Thanks again for any help

  • Can't add users' home folders to Windows Libraries - "unindexed network location" error

I am unable to add our users' home folders to their Windows Libraries on client PCs.  Windows is giving an unindexed network location error.
This worked perfectly fine in WHS 2011, but is failing on WSE 2012 R2 Essentials.
I've checked the indexing settings on the server, and the correct locations are in fact being indexed.
Since several of our clients have limited local storage, I can't solve this by turning on Offline Files.
Is this behavior by design, or am I seeing a bug?
I'm guessing that on WHS 2011 the user folders are special-cased somehow, as normally one would need to include the share root in a library for federated indexing to work correctly.  What is it about WHS 2011 that makes this work, and is it possible
to replicate these settings on our WSE 2012 R2 server?
    Thank you.

No, our clients are not domain joined.
To clarify, I'm not trying to redirect local folders, but rather to add the (automatically provisioned) user folder on the server to local libraries.  Federated search does support this scenario in WHS, so I assume it should work in WSE.
Trying to understand why I'm seeing the error.  Thanks.

  • Error/warning message "you don't have permission to modify files in this network location"

    Hi,
We have a windows server 2008 running, and we access it via remote desktop. And there's this certain folder that all users access, and where we save important files. So, since this is where important files are stored, we wanted to disable deletion (and if
possible moving) of the folder and everything under it. However, it's harder than i thought. Right now, we have the permissions "Delete" and "Delete files and subfolders" disabled already, BUT when we try to save a file to this folder,
    we got this warning/error message:
"You don't have permission to modify files in this network location"
The file is saved however, but there's no content. But when we try to cut/copy an existing file to this folder, it works.
Does anyone know how a workaround on this issue. I've already spent days configuring the settings, and when one works, another issue comes up. This is really frustrating.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
What are NTFS Permissions and Share Permissions of the shared folder? If you remove delete permissions, when someone tried to create a new folder, they couldn't rename it. Without Delete permission, we can open, modify a file and save with the same file name
but cannot create a new file with a new name.

  • HT2712 Is it possible to set up network locations in such a way that other preferences also get set?  Specifically, I usually have my Software Updates set to download in the background, but when I am using my iPhone's Personal Hotspot I'd like to disable

Or indeed is some other way possible, such as using an Applescript to detect when I am using my personal hotspot on my (limited data package!) 3g iPhone (via wi-fi or USB etc) and then switch off the automatic downloads until I revert back to my regular connection?
Apologies -seem to have posted this in the worng forum.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
But Software Update won't be an available setting choice.
But I'd turn off automatic Updates anyway, & just check once a week or once a month to see what's available.

  • InDesign 9.2 - Save to network location takes a long time.

Saving InDesign files to a network location seems to take an extremely long time during which I am unable to do anything else inside InDesign.
I know that this has been an issue for me for at least 2 weeks (since March 3, 2014, possibly earlier). I am not certain whether I have updated InDesign since then, but have consistently been experiencing this same problem.
Today I ran some tests (all using the same ~20MB file).
Save from InDesign to network location: 12 seconds
Save from InDesign to desktop: <2 seconds
Copy file (in Windows Explorer) from desktop to network: <2 seconds
Copy file from network to desktop: <2 seconds
I know I can work on the file locally and copy my saved versions out at the end of the day, but this was not necessary before, and I don't know what changed to make this take so much longer than it used to.
Current system configuration: InDesign 9.2 x64 running on a Win 7 Pro 64-bit with 16GB RAM and a Xeon 3.6GHz processor.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on how to resolve?
    Thanks!

Daylight savings time started on the 9th, right? I'm not sure about what a "server time sync problem" would be, but since my problem started before the DST switch, it doesn't seem that this could be the cause.
Also, since I am able to copy to and from the server outside of InDesign without any problems, doesn't this indicate the server and my computer are communicating just fine?
    Thank you for your assistance!

  • When i try to install i tunes it goes so far down the installation process then i get a message ' could not access network location %APPDATA%\.  Can any one help.

When i try to install i tunes, it goes so far down the installation process and then comes up with a message ' could not access network location %APPDATA%\.  I then retry and it comes up with the same message.
It also tells me i tunes needs 'Quick Time' to support the software.  I have downloaded Quicktime from i tunes seperately and gone through the whole process again, only to get the same message.
    Can anyone please help?

These kind of messages can often be cleared by using the Microsoft Installer cleanup Utility.
Here is a method for cleanup of your old iTunes installation and reinstall.
    == uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Save the files on your PC.
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
(To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install)
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista or Win 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes.
