What is a normal boot up and shutdown time?
Can anyone please tell me how much time (secs) might need a 2 months 13'' MBA to boot up and shutdown? ( i don't have any apps download)
Honestly... I don't think there is one "cut and dry" sequence. Plus, you've told nothing about your configuration on startup. Does it load directly into the OS or to the Login window? If it loads directly into the OS what's set to run on startup?
From my experience, it's 12-15 seconds from chime to login window. From there it depends on what's set to run on launch but it's usually another 5-15 seconds until I'm on my Desktop view with all of my startup applications running.

Boot and shutdown time is much slower
Running a MB Pro with 4gb of RAM. The boot and shutdown times are considerably slower. Any ideas?
Do you have the machine set to auto-login? Or does it boot to the login window? If it is set to auto-login, how long does the machine take to get to the blue screen? How much longer does it take to get from the blue screen to active desktop?
How long does it take to shut down? What applications are running when you shut down the machine? -
Retina macbook pro slow boot up and shutdown?
I have a Macbook Pro with retina display (2.6/16/512) and it's just 2 weeks old. When i first got it bootup and shutdown times were pretty awesome (Below 15 seconds for cold bootup and 5 seconds for shutdown). Now after installing many applications (final cut pro, aperture, logic pro, adobe master suite [photoshop, illustrator etc.] and few other apps) my computer seems slow both when booting up (25 seconds) and shutting down (31 seconds), it doesn't seem right to me as the rMBP uses an all flash architecture and is supposed to be fast in booting up and shutting down. Now shutting down took longer than booting up (which is kinda wierd) and sometimes when shutting down the menubar on top is still visible even though the screen had gone to the white image. Can anyone provide any explanations or suggestions to remedy this issue? Thanks in advance.
I am experiencing the same problem - except my Boot time is over a minute!!! - When I received it I was amazed at the boot time speed in comparison to my old MacBook Pro 17" - I've noticed the machine has become increasingly more sluggish when using certain applications such as Photoshop and RapidWeaver.
Reinstalling Mountain Lion had no real affect in improving the situation - I do have large Aperture Libraries - and use Creative Suite 5 reguarly.
Would be happy for some advice on what maybe the issue. - I am bit dissapointed at this point - Spending that much money on a machine that I bought for the performance boost and now that has slowed right down isn't sitting right with me. -
Is anyone else experiencing long restart and shutdown times?
I installed Mavericks the day it came out. I am experiencing very long restart and shutdown times, well over 2 minutes. I thought the shutdown times with Mountain Lion were bad. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, how did you fix it?
Check your Date & Time and Region Format.

What are the normal Boot time?/Wake from sleep time? for MB?
Looking to buy a MacBook for my wife to replace her old Dell D-420. The Dell still works fine but takes forever to boot and to wake from hibernation. I was given an old iBook a few weeks ago and was amazed at how fast it woke from sleep mode (the boot times were pretty snappy too). So my question is. What is the "normal" wake from sleep time on a MacBook? How long does a cold boot take?
BTW: Steve isn't going to surprise us with an updated MacBook next week is he??
Thanks
Soon to be MacBook owner.lancia is right- 56 second sound about right, my 2.0 GHz MacBook boots in about 49 seconds.
If you want your MacBook to boot up faster, you can reset the PRAM (parameter random access memory). What this does is that it resets all the devices it searches for when it starts up: forgets about them, literally
To do this, press down the command (the buttons next to the space bar) , option, P, and R keys at the same time when you turn on your MacBook. Press these keys until you hear the tone a second time. Make sure to do it quick, because after you hear the tone it won't work.
Hope this helps,
Wookams
To your BTW question:
Almost certainly not, but I still recommend waiting a couple months extra because Apple notebooks usually update themselves every 200 days or so. I was disappointed from learning this, but hey... -
What does a smart boot do and how do I reconnect to the Internet?
I talked to a tech guy about problems I was having with my MacBook Pro crashing and he suggested I hold down the Shift key on restarting the next time it crashed. It did and I did, and now Airport won't turn on, says I have no Airport card. So what was this smart boot suppose to do and what happened to my Internet connection? Thanks for any help.
Amongst other things a "Safe Boot" disables the Airport card until you boot normally again.
With luck, the "safe Boot" will have resolved your earlier problem (it does a directory check and removes some caches that can cause problems , etc. ) and you should now try to start up normally to see if the problem is fixed (just restart without holding any keys down).
If the original problem isn't fixed it almost certainly means that there is a problem with a piece of third party software that you have installed, or a problem with items in your own "user account".
See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564 for more information about a "Safe Boot" on a Mac.
(Edit - Whoops, sorry Matt I answered a phone call while writing this and your own post must have come in while I was absent!)
Cheers

What exactly does the contrast ratio and response time mean?
Recently I have been browsing for external monitors and I noticed that two of the specifications for monitors are a contrast ratio and response time.
What does a contrast ratio mean? What does the response time mean? Is the response time the same as the frequency refresh rate (ie. 75 Hz)?
I was looking at the Thunderbolt Display specs and it has a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a response time of 13ms, but another LED monitor that costs 1/3 the price has a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 and response time of 5ms. The resolution of the display does not matter too much for me. Would the cheaper monitor be a better choice for me if I play to mostly use the display for gaming/photo editing? You're welcome.
Would the cheaper monitor be a better choice for me if I play to mostly use the display for gaming/photo editing?
You can problem find lots of decent monitors with short response times for gaming. But I think (and this is just a guess, no basis in fact) that a decent monitor for photo editing may not be cheap and of course response time doesn't much matter so it may not make a good game monitor (depending on the kind of games you like to play of course -- angry birds would play on anything).
Also another thing to keep in mind are the two schools of thoughts on glossy monitors like the current 27" Apple monitors vs. non-glossy (anti-reflective) monitors. It's like religiion, And one group is not going to convience the other which is "better". It's a matter of taste I think. There's even a thread on this topic in these forums:
Why is Apple insisting on Glossy Displays?
I'm only mentioning this because if you want to do some photo editing there are some folks who do that stuff and claim they don't like glossy displays. -
What is the normal file structure and how do I "cut"?
I just did a clean Yosemite install from a manually backed up external due to HDD issues. When I backed up the original drive I copied my user folder into a folder named"backup". When I did the new Yosemite install, I directed it it migrate my documents from that folder. Now when I click on the standard "documents" folder on the left, I get a sub folder named "backup". What should I see? My name folder myname/ or the sub folder under that like music/movies/etc.
also, how do I "cut" the folders to move them instead of copy? I tried dragging them but I have 1.8 TB used of a 3 TB drive so I get a messeage there is not enough room to copy. "Cut" is greed out when I select folders.
any input appreciated ....How did you make the original backup?
Dragging items in the Finder is not a good way to backup - it can miss may important files and it can skip files (or fail mid process with cryptic errors).
Also how did you 'migrate' the folders back - did Migration Assistant do it for you or did you manually move the files?
Finder can 'move' items instead of copying them, but there is an inherent risk in this process if the move fails mid-way through.
Begin dragging files to another disk, the cursor will show a green plus , hold command & that green plus goes away - this will now move instead of copy. The behaviour varies depending on if you are copying onto another disk or not. press the modifiers to see what the cursor indicates (cmd, alt, will alter the behaviours).
To see a 'normal home' folder create a new user account in System preferences > Users & groups. Then login as that user. By default you have the following items in a user account…
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Movies
Music
Pictures
Public
Sites (will not exist on newer installs)
I suspect it may be simplest to delete the current botched attempt & empty the trash, go back to the original disk & re-copy the items into the correct folders. You will need to be careful though Finder is not a good tool for large file copies, and permissions can get in a mess, ask if you wan't instructions on how to repair the user permissions after the account is back in order.
Note: Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper! or even Disk Utility are better tools than Finder to use for backing up. -

What's wrong with LR5 Slideshow and the time it takes to render a 900 image show?
I just updated my LR5 with great expectation that the "Bug" would be fixed. "NOT" ........... I used the slideshow feature to display/create 700 wedding image slideshows for my clients. In LR 5 or LR5.3 when I try to play a show, I have to wait an "UNGODLY" amount of time [Six Hours???} before it plays. Heaven forbid I make changes and then it has to render again. LR4 played wonderfully. I should go back and ask for my $$$ back for the $$$'s spent upgrading to LR5. BTW, I have a very fast machine with lots of memory so it's NOT my machine.
Can anyone tell me what is going on?
And/Or if Adobe is attempting to fix this issue?
Also If I choose to go back to LR4, will my catalogs still be read by LR4?
If I go back to LR4, can I get my money back?3.0 Zeon processors x 2
2 Quads
16 GB memory
SSD scratch disk
SSD Boot disk
2.0 terabyte Raid 5 storage
Photoshop CS5
LR 5.3 Updated today
One image renders every 6 seconds in building my slide show
I'm encouraged by your comment
Canon 1DS Mk III 21 - 28 Mp each RAW Image [Same as you I believe]
LR 4 .............. I always by passed the render and the show played perfectly

I bought my rMBP last August 1 and it was running smoothly and flawlessly before. When I had to restart or shutdown, usually it takes about 2 seconds or a little more than that. When I recently installed these apps and had to shutdown, I was staring at the white screen (when it's shutting down) for more than 5 minutes! I had to force it to shut down.
I uninstalled / deleted these apps and I ran Ccleaner to delete caches and stuff but it still takes a long while to shutdown and restart. Please help!Hi Linc, thank you for your reply. Here is what I have:

FIX THE PROBLEM , I CANN'T or TELL ME HOW
Thanks Davey96. Your reply took me to other web pages and I found a whole load of people with the same problem, apparently due to restrictive practices. So, I understand the problem and there doesn't seem to be a single easy solution, but it can be worked around.

Collecting database time up and shutdown
created a trigger as I want to collect db startup and shutdown time but it doesnt seem to work. there is what i did.
first created the table needed
create table log_tab(action char(1), tm varchar2(10)) ;
then
create or replace trigger log_db_avai
after startup on database
begin
insert into log_tab
values('DB START',to_char(sysdate,'DD-MM-RRRR H24:MI:SSSSS');
end;
and
create or replace trigger log_db_avai
before shutdown on database
begin
insert into log_tab
values('DB START',to_char(sysdate,'DD-MM-RRRR H24:MI:SSSSS');
end;
and when executed ai have
Warning: Trigger created with compilation errors.

MirdassouAnd if you still want to use triggers and table, you can use a correct syntax like:
[oracle@xxx ~]$ sqlplus / as sysdba

10.6.1 Slow Startup and Shutdown
Did anyone notice the difference between the 10.6.1 startup and shutdown times and the 10.6 times ?
I had to do a clean install of 10.6 and ignore the 10.6.1 update to get back speed in startup and shutdown.
Is there anyway to solve this.
Thanks.I had the same problems, and I figured out the cause. It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
{quote:title=terminal commands}sudo chown root:admin /
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches{quote}
You'll have to enter your password after the first command.
Hope this helps someone, since it was really frustrating to have these slower startup/shutdown times for me. -
Mac mini server start and restart times
I have a new Mac Mini Server that i jsut purchased 2 weeks ago. It arrived a few days ago and i have already put ram in it and configured it as a raid 1. It seems slower now than before the ram and raid.
Current configuration
late 2012 Mac mini server
osx 10.9.3
2.6ghz i7
16gb 1600mzh ddr3 corsair vengence ram
(2) 1Tb factory apple hard drives configured as raid1(mirrored)
Start time
(4gb) 0:52m
(16GB) 0:52m
Restart time
(4GB) 1:52m
(16gb) 2:14m
Shutdown time
(4gb) 0:24m
(16gb) 1:04m
Any clue as to why my restart and shutdown times are so slow with more ram? i thought ram did not affect this. Secondly does a raid1(mirrored) affect this? it also seems a bit slower to open apps and while on the web
my late 2011 mbp smokes this thing, but it is running an ssd so its understandably going to. what I dont understand is on internet browsing the MBP is still faster. thought webspeed had nothign to do with the hard drive. im a bit new to all this.
