What is a normal number of processes to appear in activity monitor?

When I go into Activity Monitor and click on "All Processes", I have anywhere from 50-62 processes going on. A friend told me this was far too many, but she uses a different operating system than I do.
I have a 10.4.11 OS on a Macbook that I bought in January of 2007.
My computer overheats fairly easily, so I'm not sure if there is a problem here. It has typically maintained a number of around 60-62, but when I restart it, the numbers drop to a 56 or so and slowly rebuild. I recently downloaded Sophos, an antivirus program, which takes up 4 processes (don't know if that's normal).
Is this a typical number of processes (these are the numbers when I have no main programs, like Safari/Microsoft Office/itunes/other open), or do I need to do some kind of cleaning? And if I do need cleaning, what should I do?

Sophos is a real problem here, but on a PPC G5 PowerMac, so I never installed it on anything else.
My eMac/1.42/2G/10.5.8 has about 60 to 70 Processes showing, can check 10.4.11 tomorrow if you wish, but while it depends on so many factors, I don't consider yours abnormal at all.
do I need to do some kind of cleaning? And if I do need cleaning, what should I do?
If anything, At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!

  • Activity Monitor:  How to know what processes to turn off?

I cant seem to find something like a glossary for the processes that appear in Activity Monitor.
I get the idea for using the AM - to find out what processes are running and how much memory they are using, however, I just don't know what processes are "suspicious", uneccary, good, bad or whatever. Anyone know of some resource to help me know what I should turn off?
    Many thanks!

Ah, in that case, watch your CPU usage.
When Activity Monitor starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom.
For this purpose, also select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the Menubar.
Various processes will "spike" up and down normally as they do things, then are idle, so you need to watch it for a while and get a feel for the processes that are using the most CPU, and the +% Idle+ at the bottom.
When the slowdown occurs, see if something changes significantly, especially if the +% idle+ goes to near zero. If that happens, see what process(es) are using the most CPU.
If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and/or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)
You may also want to select the +System Memory+ tab towards the bottom. Keep an eye on the total of Free and Inactive memory (if they're near zero, you may need more), and the +Page outs+ (if that's high, it's another indication you may need more memory).

This value is most derived from the PROCESSES parameter. You cannot exceed this number of sessions unless you raise the parameter value.
If your database is configured to handle enough sessions, then Oracle can literally handle thousands of simultaneous connections, provided your database server also has enough resources to handle this number of connections. You will want to implement Oracle's Shared Server connections so that multiple connections share a pool of processes on the database server. This minimizes the resource consumption used by the connections.

  • What is the name of the process that renames File & Folders? To fix name entry problem?

What mac linux process found in the Activity Monitor renames files and folders? My mac is slow under mac osx 10.7.5 and nearly unusable to name files and folders since as you name them it will jump the cursor and highlight causing the name I put in to disappear. I hate this so much I'm looking at a windows box! So what process can I raise priority of to help with this severe problem?

Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 (assumed 64 bit)
Have you updated 12 to the 12.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update? If not, please do so.
If you are referring to that red stem with the blue head at the Timeline level in the Expert workspace, that is indeed the Timeline Indicator (also referred to as CTI).
To be ruled in or out at the onset...whether or not you see an orange line over the Timeline content that you are attempting to preview?
If you (manually) or the project (automatically) have set the correct project preset, there should be no colored line
of the source video when it is first dragged to the Timeline. That is the program telling you that you are getting
the best possible preview. If orange, you are not and need to "Render" the Timeline content to get the best possible preview.
Does this "Timeline Rendering" factor apply to your situation?
If you are getting the best possible preview, we still need to know the properties of your source media ---
    video compression
    audio compression
    frame size
    frame rate
    interlaced or progressive
    pixel aspect ratio
Often the above can be gathered from knowing brand/model/settings for the camera that recorded the video.
Also are you observing this behavior if you start a new project or use different source media, such as, stills or videos
    recorded with a different format?
Let us start here and then decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • A handy guide for Activity Monitor processes?

Hello. Is there a handy guide to all (or most/many) of the processes going on in Activity Monitor? I am thinking along the lines of this page:
    http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/background-processes.html
..but with more processes (e.g., this one does not have "System Events")
I'd like to see what each process does, and, if possible, what the normal cpu and memory usage ranges should be on an idle computer with little to no applications running.
    Thanks in advance.
p.s., Googling is of little help, with the search terms I've used.

    How about these:

  • What is the Max Number of Total Work Process that we can Have on  One C.I

    Hi,
What is the Max Number of Total Work Process that we can have on a Single C.I
Is there any Limit that We can only have Perticular Number of Total work process ?
Or it is just Unlimited number of total work process
    Thanks & Regards
    Dan.

from the system throughput point of view a rule of a thumb is:
1 up to 4 sometimes 5 workprocesses per CPU.
(one is used in Benchmarks where you have a very small number of transactions running with a small amount of database accesses)
you can easily find it out:
configure 4 WPs per CPU. If you have a number of WP's consuming nearly no CPU time you can reduce the number of WPs.

  • MR11 - What is the optimum number of entries to be processed in one run?

A client has been live for some time now but has never run MR11 to clear Goods Receipt entries without Invoice. They are nearing year-end and have to clear all those entries as fast as possible. Problem is MR11 keeps timing out after running for several hours, despite increasing the time limit. Has anyone run MR11 to process mass postings. If so, what is the highest number of entries?

    Hello ,
To get rid of this error, one possibility is the system parameter rdisp / max_wprun_time increase. Also some suggestions to improve the perfomance can be found in the
    following SAP Notes :
    200021  MR11 Performance - long
    330080  MR11 Performance
    300888  MR11 Performance
I hope this will solve the timeout error you face.

  • Lync User Phone Number Changed in AD - Still Showing Old (Normalized) Number Days Later in Lync Client Contact Detail

Environment:  Lync 2013 backend; Lync 2010 and Lync 2013 clients.  Enterprise Voice not implemented.  November 2013 CU Applied on Server.
Issue:  Lync user (User A) phone number changed in AD but still showing old number for others days later.
Believed Cause:  User A has not logged into Lync since change to republish new phone number?
So after reading this http://masteringlync.com/ I am beginning to think that something I perceived as an issue may actually be by design?
    Action:
User A work phone number changed in AD.  User A has only one phone entry in AD.  Normalization rule in place to basically leave number unchanged (working)
    Result:
New phone number propogated fine to Exchange/Outlook fine.  Old number displaying only in Lync client when viewing User A contact card detail
Lync 2010 Client displays only old number when looking at Client A contact detail (this client only presents phone numbers if they are actually normalized)
Lync 2013 Client displays two work numbers.
One that we identify as a "display number" just as entered in AD - this shows correctly as the new number.  Another that we identify as the "normalized number" which is still the old
    number (same as 2010 Client)
Same results whether contact is saved in Lync Client or not and is not related to Outlook contacts - in fact one test was with a Lync account that is not Mail Enabled.
I did a dbanalyze to view the SQL database detail for User A and see that Category 'userInformation' has the old phone number and the time stamp on it seems to coincide with a Lync Cllient database change (user login or refresh on that end) so this seems
to futher confirm my findings thus my reaching the point of conceding it might be out of my control.
My Question I guess is ....
Have others discovered this?  Is this a bug or do normalized phone numbers actually requre a client login to accept/republish the number correctly to others even though the information is updated in AD?  User detail and how it propogates seems to
be the biggest mystery and it gets harder and harder to explain to users why changes aren't displaying accuralely.

Thanks Richard... your blog definitely hit home with what I was seeing but guess I just didn't want to accept that as the end of the road on this.  I'm still in a little misbelief that client interaction is necessary to update a backend change.
This process really makes phone numbers in Lync an unreliable source given a user will never know if it is it up to date.  And the problem with Lync 2013 client is it shows both numbers in the client ... the address book one with the
updated AD numbers and the one the normalized AD one that the user has to login to republish.  I now more fully understand the process but trying to explain that to users when they see different work numbers .. ugh.
Oh well, guess the important part is to understand the process so thanks again.

  • Number of processes exceeds maximum limit

Normally how many process we need to put in init.ora.
My database currently has processes=100 so Obviously sessions=(100 X 1.1)+5=115.
Some times we use to get Number of processes exceeds more than 100.
What does it mean. What is the preferable value for processes.
    I have a thought to put Processes=300.
    Regards,
    Ganesh.

    Dear Ganesh,
When you are getting the "Processes exceeded" error, your Oracle server is letting you know that the number of operating system processes has exceeded 100.
    Go ahead and set:
    processes = 250
in your INIT.ORA file. You have to then shutdown and restart the database for the changes to take effect.
    Ciao.

  • Error in generating reference number of process

    Hi All Masters,
    I'm new in HCM P&F.
Currently I have a problem. I was running a sample process or copied process from the sample. Clicking 'check and send'. Still OK.
But when I clicked 'Send' button, I got an error message displayed 'Error in generating reference number of process'
Would you please help me what's wrong with that? FYI, I've tried to activate Case Management, but maybe, there is still any loss in that area?
    Thank you for your help

    Hi Otto,
Neither did I. I don't have any complete resources. Maybe actually there are exists somewhere, but just I don't find it yet.
I try to learn and doing that by watching this forum and sap help/doc, just maybe there are other people who have same obstacles with me in developing this and then I will get solutions for it.
    Have a nice day...

         void com.evermind.util.ThreadPoolThread.run()
    Question:
    - What is the cause of this error message? How to avoid?.
From the Oracle error message documentation:
ORA-00020 maximum number of processes (string) exceeded
Cause: All process state objects are in use.
Action: Increase the value of the PROCESSES initialization parameter.
Another alternative approach may be to configure your Connection pool and/or your ApplicationModule pool to optimize the use of
database connections and/or restrict the number of database connections used by the application. For example, if your application
has declared many root ApplicationModules (i.e. more than one ApplicationModule pool is in use) then it may help to enable the
jbo.doconnectionpooling switch so that each ApplicationModule instance in the pools does not maintain a dedicated database
connection while not in use. Another alternative if you are using the BC4J connection pool (not a JDBC datasource) may be to
restrict the number of connections the pool can create to < 150 with the jbo.maxpoolsize switch. However, please note that this
may have an impact on throughput.
    - I intended to deploy my application to 9IAS server. Will the same problem occurs too?.
This is a database issue. So, yes.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the best approach to process data on row by row basis ?

    Hi Gurus,
I need to code stored proc to process sales_orders into Invoices. I
think that I must do row by row operation, but if possible I don't want
to use cursor. The algorithm is below :
for all sales_orders with status = "open"
    check for credit limit
if over credit limit -> insert row log_table; process next order
    check for overdue
if there is overdue invoice -> insert row to log_table; process
    next order
check all order_items for stock availability
if there is item that has not enough stock -> insert row to
    log_table; process next order
if all check above are passed:
    create Invoice (header + details)
    end_for
What is the best approach to process data on row by row basis like
    above ?
    Thank you for your help,
    xtanto

Processing data row by row is not the fastest method out there. You'll be sending much more SQL statements towards the database than needed. The advice is to use SQL, and if not possible or too complex, use PL/SQL with bulk processing.
In this case a SQL only solution is possible.
The example below is oversimplified, but it shows the idea:
    SQL> create table sales_orders
      2  as
      3  select 1 no, 'O' status, 'Y' ind_over_credit_limit, 'N' ind_overdue, 'N' ind_stock_not_available from dual union all
      4  select 2, 'O', 'N', 'N', 'N' from dual union all
      5  select 3, 'O', 'N', 'Y', 'Y' from dual union all
      6  select 4, 'O', 'N', 'Y', 'N' from dual union all
      7  select 5, 'O', 'N', 'N', 'Y' from dual
      8  /
    Tabel is aangemaakt.
    SQL> create table log_table
      2  ( sales_order_no number
      3  , message        varchar2(100)
      4  )
      5  /
    Tabel is aangemaakt.
    SQL> create table invoices
      2  ( sales_order_no number
      3  )
      4  /
    Tabel is aangemaakt.
    SQL> select * from sales_orders

      4    when ind_overdue = 'Y' and ind_over_credit_limit = 'N' then

    >
You have only treated the symptom and not fixed the cause. As fellow members said, you could kill some "non-critical" processes and log in to the database.
But you will have to find out why there were so many processes in place. I am sure you might have set the definite number of processes after your planning before you went live. If you suddenly see too many processes, you will have to find out why and where they are coming from. Also check if there are any rogue processes.
To find out if there are any processes which have no sessions attached
    select spid from v$process where addr not in (select paddr from v$session);
To answer your question, data guard shouldn't be affected by this. Nor would dataguard cause this issue in primary.
Fix this processes issue before it's too late. Otherwise, there will be a situation when you will have to keep increasing the processes until you hit the OS limit

    Venkat

In my listener.log, I got this at 08:05 am:

    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
Host SRVXXX is a server where a web app is and 192.168.1.1 is our firewall. May I think that this server was the one that made so many connections?
I checked alert.log, trc file and listener.log. What else can I check to determine what was the cause of this incident?
