What is a plug-in?

I just updated Java (I think) and a box of instructions about "activating" and "updating" and "plug-ins", etc. appeared. I have no idea why or what or when or where or whether- I am to understand and/or do.
I read all the instructions several times but I still don't know what a plug-in is, let alone choosing to activate or update something in this specific instance. (And does this relate to the Java update somehow?)
I hope I've related sufficient info for someone to help me. And that help will definitely be APPRECIATED!!

A plug-in is a type of add-on. It's a program on your computer that allows a browser (like Firefox) to render content it otherwise can't handle. Java, Flash Player, QuickTime and Silverlight are examples of plug-ins.

You can check if Java is up-to-date on the following page.
* http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
At the moment, the Mozilla Plugin Check page may incorrectly identify the current version of Java as outdated.
* https://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/
Note however that most sites don't require Java. You shouldn't have it installed unless you know for a fact that you need it.

What codec or plug-in do I need to see audio & video on .mov files in quicktime?

    OK, I will get it!
This is where I went and it is unfortunate I have to go through this evry time:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#MPEG-2%20Video,%20Linear%20PCM,%20timecode
    QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5.3
QuickTime Broadcaster features Support for broadcasting ISO-compliant MPEG -4 audio (AAC LC) and MPEG -4 video ( MPEG -4 Part 2 ) Instant VOD automatically saves the live broadcast to the hard drive and prepares it for streaming (creates hint tracks )
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL764
    too frustrating:
downloaded the QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5.3 add-on and now get an error message that says I need to download something else here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=696d6463&c subtype=78647662
... but there are too many choices and I never know which one I need – CC, Divx, Xvid, ZyGo, Streambox, Autodesk ????

  • What does 'blocked plug-in' mean?

Today as I tried to listen to my usual radio station through the net, I received the message 'blocked plug-in'.
As I tried to upload photos from iPhoto to ebay through their standard method, I received the message 'blocked plug-in'.
What is blocked plug-in and how do I unblock it?
Many thanks for any assistance provided on this matter.

    Adobe Flash Player
    Check Flash Version
Adobe strongly recommends that you first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_1 0_4
Follow the instructions closely, such as quitting ALL applications first before installing.  **Repair permissions and restart your computer after the installation is completed.**

All you will need is a USA adapter for your MBP power adapter since it will work in  electrical environments from 100v. to 220V.  It seems that a type B will be needed.

  • What is the plug-in for media player for wondows 7 ?

my local TV station says that I need a media player add-on and it only list apps for xp and vista I have windows 7 what do I need?

Is it looking for the Windows Media Player? The default installation of WMP does not include the Firefox plugin. There is a WMP plugin created by Microsoft for Firefox, but the standard WMP plugin installer from Microsoft is for Windows XP and Vista, though you can run the installer on Windows 7 it installs the plugin in a location that Firefox 4 will not find.
One way to get around this is to install the HTML5 Extension for Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-in available from http://www.interoperabilitybridges.com/html5-extension-for-wmp-plugin
That add-on will do 2 things, it will install the WMP plugin in a location that Firefox 4 on Windows 7 can find, it will also add an extension to add extra features for use by the Windows Media Player. This extension has been reported as causing memory leaks so I recommend that once you install the HTML5 Extension for Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-in you should restart Firefox then uninstall the extension. Uninstalling the extension will not remove the plugin, so Firefox 4 will still be able to use it.

  • What  type of plug in do I need to use between weblogic and tomcat please

    Hi,
Can anybody please tell me what type of plugin do I need to install to communicate between Tomcat4.0 and weblogic6.1 sp2.actually I wanted to use a connection pool from my servlet on my local tomact where connection pool is created on remote weblogic server.........?
I have no idea what to do. I tried including the weblogic.jar in my local classpath where my tomcat is sitting. This didnot work . I got the following error......
I want to know is it possible.............?
javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Cannot instantiate class: weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory [Root exception is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory]
    Your response is very inportant......
    Thnaks

Thanks a lot for your rely....
then how could I use the remote connection pool in my
local Tomcat server.....?If thats is not possible then
what if organisation have two webservers...? you mean
thay have to create connection pool in two servers
rather on one server and use it every where.....?
Still depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Most clustered systesm use a connections on each server. They sync the data retrieved between servers, not the connections themselves.
If you simply one a single connection point then you need to use a driver that proxies requests to and from the real connection point.
    RmiJdbc is free at http://www.objectweb.org/.
There are commercial drivers available, search at http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers, which provide an enterprise layer for database access. They are probably more robust and feature rich than the above one.

I'm going to France, Do I need a converter or just a plug adapter?

All you need is a plug pin to outlet adapter...there are shops at DeGaule Airport that used to sell them, other stores in Paris carry them. The Apple chargers are 100-240 volts.

  • What third party plugs/synths do you use??

I was using Reason as a Rewire device for awhile, still do if i'm working with older beats i've made, But I would much rather be able to have instruments within Logic. I actually don't really like the string section for Logic, Reason is much deeper, and I use strings nonstop, so it's a big deal for me. What kind of 3rd party plugins and whatnot are compatible with Logic. Just AU plugins:?? do these all open within Logic just like say the EXS24??

So then do AU plugins work just like VST plugins, and are AU plugins the only plugins compatible with Logic
    Correct.
i guess i'm looking for a good string AU plugin
Strings? What, for orchestral stuff? Or disco strings? Or dark and dreamy X-Files strings? Or 70's string machines? They are all quite different applications.
For orchestral stuff, look to things like EastWest Symphonic Orchestra, the Vienna stuff. ALl high-end sample libraries. For more soundtrack stuff, Omnisphere has a lot to offer. String machines, then there's G-Force Virtual String Machine.
I'm sure others will recommend some other libraries/plugins as well.
