What Is A Portal?

Recently, I often hear people use the term "portal". And it somethimes appears in the job description of a vacancy advertisement. What is a portal?

A Web portal is a "supersite" on the Internet that provides a comprehensive entry point for a huge array of resources and services. Portals typically contain news, free e-mail services, search engines, online shopping, chat rooms, discussion boards and links to other sites.
Corporate portals are internal websites that provide proprietary information to employees, suppliers, partners, clients and stockholders. When they serve only the needs of employees, they're called intranets. When outside parties, like customers or suppliers, are allowed access, they become extranets. Corporate portals let users locate and share knowledge and data, participate in a business process and collaborate. They generally feature search engines for internal materials, and they can be customized for different user groups.
Then there are " Vortals ".
A vortal is a jargony way of saying "vertical industry portal." A vortal provides information and resources for a particular industry. You'll find news, research and statistics, online tools, discussions and newsletters pertaining to a particular industry or area of discipline. For example, research how much less you're making than a 25-year-old first-year associate in New York City or find a lawyer to handle your divorce. Or VerticalNet.com will give you links to vortals for almost any industry you can imagine, from solid-waste disposal to textiles to fiber optics to human resources.

    Hello,
    What is the portal that comes with webcenter suite 11g?
    How to retrieve the content from UCM using this portal?
    -Scott

    Scott,
    The JCR adpater can be configured against Oracle Content Server(UCM), file system and Oracle Portal. This gives you only the read feature on the repository. However the web center frame work also provides you the Document Library Task flows with both Read/Write capabilities and other capabilities like recent documents, search etc. The task flows can also customized to suit your UI requirements as well. In addition to this there is a content presenter Task flow available where Business Users can display formatted content from UCM on web center page. This is similar to the content presenter portlet available inside WLP.

  • What is Abstract Portal Component?

    Hi Experts,
    Can anyone explain me the meaning of an Abstract Portal Component? What are the cases required to implement it.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Vinay,
    The Abstract Portal Component is a class that offers a lean method for writing HTML commands to the Web client as well as for basic event handling. The programming effort is therefore greater for larger, interactive components.
    you can understand by seeing the below links

  • What happened to Portal Dreamweaver extension

    Hello,
    In my company, we are quite new in using OAS Portal so i did some search about using the css of the new site.
    I found something interessant about the possibility of mapping the css with the templates UI in Portal.
    But i also saw on forums there are many problems about using the extension with Portal web services, and before continuing my searches, i'm wondering if this technology still exists or have been abandonned :
    Indeed, i found no link to the extension download in the new architecture of oracle site.
    Where can i find this or recent information on using dreamweaver extension with OAS Portal 10g 10.1.2 ?
    And if that possibility is no more available, what is the easyest way to apply my css on the portal (without hand writing the mapping with the UI Templates)
    Sorry if i said big mistakes : please just correct me !
    Thanks for your replies !

    Hi Nico -
    The Dreamweaver Extension to work with Oracle Portal was never a supported extension. It was a prototype that was made available for a short while to allow people to play with. It is no longer available on the OTN site.
    The only functionality that the Dreamweaver extension offered was the ability to save the HTML written in Dreamweaver directly into an Unstructured UI Template in Oracle Portal. The UI within Oracle Portal for writing the HTML for an Unstructured User Interface Template is just a text field. This just allowed you to use Dreamweaver to write your HTML.
    You can still write your HTML in Dreamweaver, you just need to cut & paste the HTML source into the text field that Unstructured UI templates give you.
    No functionality of the Portal is affected by the removal of the Dreamweaver extension.
    Hope this helps,
    Candace

  • Portal stability - "what is the portal doing?"

    We have a portal running with the latest JDK (Linux X86_64, IBM JDK SR9), recommended parameters set and still facing lots of stability problems. The portal has three server processes, what we see actually is, that two of them consume each 100 % CPU. Actually no one is logged into the portal. What can we as a CUSTOMER do aside from creating thread dumps and attach them to an OSS call and "wait"? How to find out, what the system is doing?
    Markus

    David, I really do appreciate your help - thank your for your time.
    It´s 4 am here in Germany and I just got a reply from another J2EE-ESS-Portal Prio-1 call, that´s why I´m awake...
    Meanwhile I have found out a possible "reason" for this. A collegue responsible for the "BI Portal" (we have meanwhile about 18 or 19 J2EE instances due to the fact, that you can´t install everything on one due to interdependencies - all-in-all a big mess) did today some configuration in federated portal infrastructure (I wasn´t aware of that) and apparently a configuration change invalidates the/a/some (of those dozend) buffers/caches on both portals and implictly triggers a GC. Since the parameter "-Xdisableexplicitgc" was not set, it may be ran around in circles.
    I finally deleted the the logfiles today due to other problems we had because SAP is still unable to provide a usefull logging mechanism by default and your logfiles are getting trashed with 99,9 % garbage making finding other non-fatal errors almost impossible without stopping the engine, deleting all *.trc and *.log, starting again and trying to reproduce the error - on the production system, including massive user interruption (who´s logged on? one doesn´t know).
    I am really thankful for your offer to help but I´m at the point, where I just open OSS calls, (including ABAP) 16 are running, 2 prio-1, several prio-2 - just plain frustration and no more motivation to do one step more than necessary.
    I got today a note from a supporter about "JMS" - what the heck is that and why do I need to know anything about that? I´m at the point: "Either educate me and  give me the possibility to do so without the necessity of becoming a Java developer - or leave me alone with that boring detail and fix the error."
    You are absolutely correct, one need to work "together" but doing so by opening OSS calls and talking to seven different people in one call and giving me notes that are greek or other notes with "click here and click there" is not "working together", it´s just a very typical example of distributed development, where distributed is so distributed, that the right hand doesn´t know what the left hand does - limitation of damage.
    Build once - debug everywhere.
    sigh
    Markus

  • What's the Portal bundled with ias 10.1.2.0.2 ? 10.1.2.0.1 or 10.1.2.0.2 ?

    My Holy Graal is to upgrade Portal 10.1.4...
    OUI claims I'm running
    <ul>
    <li>Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.2.0.2 in one home (AS)</li>
    <li>Oracle Portal 10g 10.1.2.0.1 under that same home</li>
    </ul>
    (I installed the AS home only for the Portal and the install went like a breeze).
    However, when I display the [WEB] Enterprise manager home page it says :
    Version     : 10.1.2.0.2
    Installation Type :Portal and Wireless
    My install is :
    <ul>
    <li>One home with DBMS 10.1.2.0.1</li>
    <li>One home with MRCA 10.1.2.0.2</li>
    <li>One home wiith OIM 10.1.2.0.2</li>
    <li>One home with AS 10.1.2.0.2</li>
    </ul>
    I was going to go straight to the portal upgrade and decided to look up the exact Portal version number through OUI. I wish I hadn't !!!
    Can somebody confirm I do <b>NOT</b> need to apply 10.1.2.1 despite the
    <a style="color:#0000ff" href="http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/portal/html/upg_1014_1012_intro.html#SupportedVersions">
    <span style="color:#0000ff">Warning</span></a> on the upgrade page. In other words that the Portal version bundled with ias 10.1.2.0.2 is 10.1.2.0.2 (and that OUI is wrong to claim otherwise).
    Thx in adv
    Alain Pannetier

    I've upgraded yesterday night and all went well !
    Except that the precheck detected that my repository db's aq_tm_processes was still unset.
    I must have changed the current value only at install time (now it's also in the spfile).
    <br>
    The good thing is that you can run the upgrade script a second time and that it detects the already successfully executed steps.
    So basically found the mrua its shrubbery ;-)

  • What is the portal root directory for uploading files

    Hi
    I need to upload js files to my portal server (to the home page)
    Can anyone let me know where is the the folder in the server that I need to put the files and the portal will see it.
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
    Oracle Portal doesn't have a "root" directory - Oracle Portal is a combination of many other products & services.
    You need to put your .js files in a Directory & tell Apache to "look" in tthat directory for the .js files. You need to use a directive offered by Apache - Alias - to achieve this. You need to tweak main the Apache Configuration File - http.conf - & specify the folder where your .js files reside. You need to modify the Configuration File using the Entrerprise Manager only.
    Here's an example :-
    Alias /js C:/OraMidTier/javascript
    <Directory C:/OraMidTier/javascript>
              Order allow,deny
               Allow from all
    </Directory>You can then dump all your javascript files in this folder & access it in your HTL Pages with the Virtual Path - /js - e.g.:-
    <script type="text/javascript" src="/js/mySrc.js">You can get more information from the Oracle HTTP Administrator's Guide ( or, the Apache Documentation ) about the Alias DIrective.

  • What portlets does Portal come bundled with?

    Anyone know where I can find a comphrehensive list of the portlets that come bundled with Portal?

    Hi,
    Goto the portlet repository by clicking on "Display Portlet Repository" in the Administer tab. There you can find a link
    called seeded providers. These providers come with portal. You can explore each of these providers to find out the

  • What is the Weblogic Portal Admin URL

    Hi,
    I am learning the Weblogic Portal using workshop. I Installed Weblogic Portal 10.3.2 with Workshop and created a sample portal application, configured the Workshop to start the weblogic server and start the server,Run my application EAR into server and saw theopen administration console.
    Please clarify the following quesitons
    1. How do i deploy the portal application and access my application without using Workshop?
    2. What is the portal admin console url,port number?
    3. What is the purpose of using application specific console in WLP i.e http://localhost:port/myappAdmin ?
    4. is there any common administrator console in WLP i.e without using application specific console like http://localhost:port/myappAdmin ?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot
    Suresh

    Suresh -
    1. To deploy without Workshop/Eclipse, you will generally create an EAR of your application (via the Export Wizard under the File > Export menu) and deploy that with either the WLS console, WLST, or the weblogic.Deployer utility class. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15919_01/wlp.1032/e14245/deployment.htm#i1027718 has a fair amount of information.
    2. The WLP admin portal is a webapp deployed as part of your application, via the wlp-tools-admin-app-lib.ear shared library. So, its host and port number are the same as wherever you deploy your application. The url path of the admin portal is controlled via your application's META-INF/weblogic-application.xml file; there's a <wls:library-context-root-override> element for the 'tools' context-root.
    3. Since the WLP admin portal is a webapp deployed as part of your application, it needs to have a unique context-root to support deploying multiple WLP applications. The ear wizard in Eclipse defaults to specifying the context-root as [appname]Admin to support this, but you can always change the context-root as I described above.
    4. No, currently, the WLP admin console is application-scoped and controls the configuration and behavior for that application. So, for multiple applications, you will have to use multiple admin console urls.
