What is a secure browser to use?

Firefox and safari updated their software and it says mac osx 10.4.11 can't update.  Is there a secure browser to use for my macbook?

The .11 update for 10.4 was the last update for that version. Updates like the .11 are incremental and free, upgrades like to 10.6 are usually paid upgrades and different than updates. Confused yet? LOL. Apples last upgrade to 10.9 is free, and the only upgrade that I'm aware of that Apple has given away. Make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements to run 10.6.x before you purchase anything, you may need to upgrade your ram depending on how much you have installed.

What is the best browser to use for facebook?

Any browser is supposed to work, provided the rest of the infrastructure (Flash, Java) is up to date.
However, since FB is so prone to install/modify/alter its settings/cookies/environment, I prefer to keep mine sandboxed and access it only via a dedicated browser used for nothing else, thus minimizing the risk and exposure.  For that, I use the Flock browser, purportedly optimized for social media: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19719/flock

  • Opera not responding to launch...What's the best browser to use?

Opera just went through an upgrade a few days ago. It worked fine before and up until today. Now, I click the app icon - a quick jump in the dock, but no response (and no blue dot to indicate it's open). I've tried right click and open, same thing. I've tried closing it, now I can't even get it to open on the dock again. What's up with this? Is this a good browser? I just started using this a couple weeks ago, mozilla fan personally - but I do like some of the features Opera has to offer. What's the best and safest browser to use? Are there precautions to take as far as security threats, etc. I've only been a MAC user for about a year now and as far as I've 'heard' the Mac pretty much takes care of itself. True?

To uninstall Opera completely, you must delete the following folders and files:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Opera/
    ~/Library/Caches/Opera/
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.operasoftware.Opera.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.operasoftware.OperaWidgets.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences/
Starting with the Cache folder is a good idea. That way you don’t loose any settings or data.
Alternately, you can just try starting Opera from another account on your machine. The Guest account is a good place to start testing.

  • Some words on a frequently used site link to third party ads but only on FF not IE; m discussing with site who asked what browser i use; i use avast free.

I recently started using FF. I use a local nz auction site trade me & noticed that some words (partic 'free' and 'women') showed up green on FF (not on IE) with a link to other sites one a dating site one a free gaming site I think. I asked TM to remove these links, however they've asked me to tell them which browser I use & which security software (use Avast free vsn). So obviously isn't them I conclude. (they are going to follow it up). I also use Vista. I went into my Trade Me listings initially and disguised the 'offending words' ie made 'women' 'w...n' instead - then the next word 'women' displayed the link, and so on thru the ad. When I reinstated the word 'women' again it showed up green on FF only, not IE. You can view these by going to Trade Me (NZ) and entering the auction Listing #: 419422108 or go to this link http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=419422108
And now I see it's showing up on another site as well - the word 'free'. Never had this prob before and is only on FF. Just checked and isn't doing it on Chrome either. Wondering what FF's take is on this?? Many thanks in advance.

From what you have described, I don't think you are ever going to pick that up as malware at all. But I did look at the site you mentioned in Google Chrome, and in IE9. First thought was maybe Chrome suppresses it, but that would be contrary to trying to convince you that their AdSense or IntelliTXT is "helping" you.
What I did find in Chrome was
"Google Chrome's connection attempt to ad-apac.doubleclick.net was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
Since I don't have ad blockers in Chrome or IE, that tells me that my hosts file is doing its job, you can draw you own conclusions. There is something similar displayed in IE, but I can't read what was there because the font-size was too big. for the space. In Firefox with "Adblock Plus" extension it is all wiped out. The hosts file works across the entire system but is directed at blocking malware sites more than advertising. "Adblock Plus" is very good at blocking ads and can do its blocking with more generic filters, and can block a lot of malware from coming in but it can't block at the system level that a hosts file can.
In IE although I can only see "It appea" because the font is too large and text does not wrap it does actually say "It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet."
I would certainly suggest installing "Adblock Plus" extension and the "Easylist (USA)" filter subscription -- links are in the links previously provided, and installing the hosts file as well also in the links.
It takes a bit more work to install and maintain a hosts file but the directions should be clear enough.

  • Why do iPhones/iPad not support Flash Player/Java and what are my alternatives for browsing sites using these plug-ins?

Why do iPhones/iPad not support Flash Player/Java and what are my alternatives for browsing sites using these plug-ins?

There are also iSwifter, Photon, Skyfire, etc., some only support Flash some support Java and Flash.
Adobe never made a version of Flash for iOS and closed their mobile flash division a couple of years ago. You can get Flash on other personal devices but you will be using a 2 year old version that has not been patched for security vulnerabilities.
When the original iPhone was released Mr. Jobs said it would never run Java as it was old technology and a security risk. Nothing has changed since.

  • Unable to view web page no matter what browser i use

Ok on my MacBook i am unable to view a web site no matter what browser i use. If i go to another computer in my network i am able to view this site. If i take my laptop to another network it will still not work.  I have run permissions and disk warrior. I did try a few things with onyx as well but was not so sure what i was doing. Any suggestions?

    What is the error?
The DNS cache could be stuck.
In the Terminal try:dig www.macupdate.comIt should reply that it is 70.86.154.194.
If that doesn't work, you DNS is not working and pointing you to the wrong place.
You can try clearing the DNS cache with dscacheutil -flushcacheAlmost forgot to mention: there are several threads on similar problems.

  • Cockpit: Browser widget, what browser is used.

    Hi Experts,
I have been asked a question regarding the browser widget regarding Cockpit and Dashboards.
" What browser is used by the browser widget ? "
I assumed it was the default browser set in Windows but can anyone shed any light on this?
    Kind regards,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I believe not all browsers are supported. Check the documentation to find out what browsers are supported.
    Thanks,

  • My Firefox browser will only open websites starting with "https". What is preventing my browser to open a non-secure (http) website ? Please help!!

I have checked my Firewall settings and added Mozilla Firefox to the list of programs accepted. I have also uninstalled Firefox & reinstalled it twice. I have turned off my antivirus & I still can't open a non-secure browser.

Thank you, thank you, thank you FredMcD!! It was my AVAST anti-virus software. I had the "Web Shield" turned on, so all I did was turn it OFF, so now I can browse on the Internet on any website. When you first install Avast anti-virus, the Web Shield by default is turned on. This really should be turned off as not to freak out new users, especially by those that are not computer savvy. I cannot thank you enough! Take care. :-D

  • What are the security risks for opening port 80 on workstations?

    Hello all,
in our environment, there is an application which open port 80 on workstations when installed, but it is not allowed on preimeter FW
could you please advise what are the security risks for leaving port 80 opened on the workstations? or it is considered secure unless it is not allowed on the preimeter FW?
    thanks alot & regards

    Hi R.Naguib.
The 80 port is open by default through the firewall on Windows system, it is used by a http protocol by a browser.
As for the network or hardware Firewall settings, I suggest to turn to the network administrator for details.

  • Ques; How  do you secure imail when used being used in iweb. People can mess

How do you secure imail when used being used in iweb? People can mess w/my settings in iweb imail window.

    What is iMail?
And what is an iWeb iMail window?
iWeb is part of iLife 06 which is an application used to create websites hosted on .Mac.
Are you referring to Apple's Mail application and webmail access using a browser such as Safari to access your .Mac account?
Which people can mess with what settings? You shouldn't allow anyone else to access your Mac when logged in to your account and home folder/directory. OS X was designed for multiple users of the same Mac with each regular user having their own computer login account (with or without admin privileges) and associated home folder/directory to store and access their data and settings for their login account only.

  • Why am I always asked to re-fresh my browser when using Hotmail?

    Hello,
I have Firefox 3.6, Windows 7 Home Premium.
When I am in Hotmail and viewing my emails, I am asked repeatedly to refresh my browser window. I keep getting this message:
"Please refresh your browser window. When you access your Windows Live Hotmail account from more than one computer, we ask you to sign in again to help keep your account private and secure. "
The trouble is I have only used one computer, have only one computer, and no other users have ever used my Hotmail account.
No matter how many times I refresh my browser, whether using my inbox refresh key, or my browser refresh key, I keep getting the same above message over-and-over again.
I have change my theme, checked for updates, searched the help forums, and still no success.
    Please help.
    Thank you

    Hello Firefox,
Perhaps you need to make Hotmail and Fire Fox friends, or at least business associates. It shouldn't matter that Hot Mail is an IE platform email server.
What matters, is that you create a "plug in" that solves this problem.
It also appears that many people are having this problem.
Thank you to everyone for your replies.

  • Mac security-browser, Java, Flash

Just now read an article about Mac security. The writer offered several tips, including—
–Never use an administrator account for day-to-day computing.
–Use a sandboxed browser such as Google Chrome.
    –Uninstall/disable the standalone Flash Player.
    –Uninstall/disable the Java Player.
These tips raise some questions. Why the concern about the administrator account? What is a "sandboxed browser"? Why the fuss about Flash and Java? If I use Mountain Lion, if I keep the OS up–to–date, and if I keep Flash and Java fully up–to–date, what's the big deal?

I cannot explain why, but my browsers started recognizing the Java plug-in when I went to the following web site by Oracle.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
My hunch is that between the support note listed in the above and going to the Java browser test it started working, but I am not really sure.
