iPhone/iPhone 3G, 3GS uses the standard sim card.

You will not need a SIM card to unlock. Please keep in mind that only Verizon Wireless Global Support Team completes the SIM Unlock procedure. Please contact our Global Support team at 9085594899.
You must be a Verizon Wireless customer and the following qualifications must be met for the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) to be unlocked:
•The device being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
•The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
•The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
•Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
***Important***
SIM unlock is only for international service. Domestic SIM cards will not work with your Verizon Wireless device after SIM unlock.

The phone is locked to Softbank in Japan. Softbank does not offer unlocking at this time. The phone is going to be useless in Malaysia unless he wants to sign up for service with Softbank and pay the International roaming fees.
Tell him to give it back or try to sell it and buy an iPhone from one of the 3 carriers in Malaysia that offer service there. All iPhones sold in Malaysia are unlocked.

Contacts and Sim card

Why is only one of 38 contacts stored on the Sim card and none of the others are? Is there a way to view/edit/control whats on the Sim card?

I think that you misunderstood, none of the contacts are synced with Google and only one is stored on the sim card. The contacts were imported from Backup Assistant when I got the new phone.

Either you do the unlock work and perform a restore on your iphone with your SIM card in from your end before shipping, the remove it before shipping,
OR you ship it with your SIM card to let the buyer perform it (...happened to me twice)
