What is a Sleep Image?

I found a file on my hard drive that is labeled Sleep Image. It is about 2gbs in size, and I cannot figure out what exactly it is. Can anyone help?

Your MBP features "Safe Sleep"... When you put the machine to sleep, it first writes the contents of memory to a file on the hard drive... Should your battery die (and the internal backup battery discharge) while in sleep mode, the computer will 'recover' from this file at the next power-on...

  • What is a disk image??

    Hello,
I've just backed up my Mac, onto an external hard disk. I've now begun to think that I should make it secure, so if it ever fell into the wrong hands they can't access it without a password.
I understand that I have to create a 'Disk Image'. But what is a Disk Image? Is it simply a folder with my backup in, which is protected by a password?
I've opened Disk Utility, gone to File > New > Disk Image from Folder > selected my backup folder on the external hard disk > selected encription > and saved. It is now taking an age to make a Disk Image (whatever that is).
Once it has finished, do I treat it like a normal folder? Does it move the original backup into the Disk Image, or should I delete this? How do I use it?
    Thanks

    Thanks for response.
I want to backup my entire computer onto an external hard disk. I've done as you said: made a Disk Image of my Hard Disk (password protected, read/write). I can now copy that to my external hard disk.
I now intend to backup my Users > Home folder every week. But I can't drag my Home folder onto the .dmg file to copy and replace the old Home folder.
Does this mean that I have to double click the .dmg file, to get the disk icon to appear on my desktop. I then drag my Home folder to this folder to copy and replace the old Home folder. And amazingly this links to and updates the .dmg file.
Won't this take ages? The .dmg file has to open (process 1), the file has to copy and replace the old Home folder (process 2) and then somehow the disk icon on the desktop has to link back to the .dmg file (process 3)
Can I not just password protect the entire external hard disk or password protect a folder?
    Thanks

  • What is an ISO Image? and how do I use bootcamp?

What is an ISO Image? and how do I use Bootcamp

    Heya!
An .ISO image is a well, form of image file. :3
If you want to change it to a .img/.dmg (Which are, essentially, the same file) you can use this Terminal command:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o /path/to/target.img /path/to/original.iso
OSX tends to chuck a .dmg on the end after conversion, just get rid of it if you don't want it. Apple's Bootcamp FAQ should help you using bootcamp, but I'm not sure if OSX 10 has bootcamp. You can always try searching for it.

  • What is the best image size format for imovie iOS

I want to create a few black images with white letters as title slides and use them with some of my videos I am creating using imovie with my new ipad3.
What is the best image size?
    thanks!
    Jeremy

It all depends on what you want to do with the images.
If you don't want to do any moves on the images then make them the exact size of the video.
The iPad 3 edits in full HD, 1920 x 1080.
If you want to do small moves, then make is larger.
But keep the 1920 x 1080 dimensions otherwise iMovie just chops the image to that ratio.
    good luck

  • Big sleep image file!?

I'm not sure if it's big but I'm running out of room on my hard drive about 7G left out of 100G. I figure I might be able to clean some of that clutter so I ran the Disk inventory utility.
It found that my sleep image is 13G, is it normal?
For info I rarely shut down my computer (may be once a month), actually my session right now as been up for 9 days.
    Any advise, idea?
    Thanks
    Thierry
PS: As well as 7 swap files totaling another 5G approximately

Why don't you just replace your drive with a much larger one? Check out MacSales.com for larger drives for your model.
With only 2 GBs of RAM I would not expect a 13 GB sleep image. The sleepimage file should be the size of the installed RAM.
You have a lot of swap space in use because you are running too many concurrent processes for the amount of RAM installed. Add more RAM or run fewer applications. Rebooting will also reduce the swap file to its default.

  • What is the viewable image area/screen size (length x width) on the 2014  21.5" and 27" imacs?

what is the viewable image area/screen size (length x width) on the 2014  21.5" and 27" imacs? i have an older 24" and am trying to determine if i need to go up or if 21.5" will be adequate. Thanks!

    21.5 -
    Height: 17.7 inches (45.0 cm)
    Width: 20.8 inches (52.8 cm)
    27 -
    Height: 20.3 inches (51.60 cm)
    Width: 25.6 inches (65.0 cm)

  • Any ideas what resolution and size images I should ask for advertisers?

I plan to work on iPad android and PDF interactive.
What resolution and size images should I ask to advertisers?
    And video size as well.
Would be full page, half page, 2/6 page, 1/6 page.
    Anyone has experience in this?
    Thanks !!

Thanks I already put practical approach to the situation:
I noticed when an image with a size 1024 x 768 pix at 72 dpi was used to make a folio, the resolution result was bad.
What turned workable was to ask for full page: 13.5 width by 17.5 height in inches (and yeah with 72 DPI), then when adding the image to the folio the quality is very good.
The rest of the sizes were the result of using percentages with the basis 13.5x17.5 inches

  • How can I disable the sleep image?

I have OS X installed on a 240 GB SSD on my Mac Pro. There is a sleep image of around 20 GB showing up on the drive. I don't normally sleep the Mac Pro as it won't. There are devices attached which prevent the Mac sleeping so there's little point in having it sit on the drive. Its on an OWC PCI Accelsior Drive. Is there anyway of disabling the creation of a sleep image. This Drive is backed up regularly using Time machine.

Thanks for your feedback. I made a restartless add-on that will revert the behavior of standalone images to be rendered against the grey background.

You can install this add-on and then it will all happy time :)

  • What is the "factory image" drive?

I tried to install a program and got the message that I had no memory.  But I've only use a small fraction of my 4 gig HP drive, but I see there is something called the "factory image drive" about 1.5 gigs that is nearly full.  What is the "factory image drive" and is this preventing me from installing my program?

The D drive, since it holds a mirror image of your operating system, it will always almost be full. Nothing you have installed on the computer or files you have added to the computer are in the D drive its only the operating system and the programs that were on your computer when you opened it and took it out of the box.
Do not delete ay files from the D drive - it is there incase you need to re-load your Windows and original content onto the computer. if you take things out or ad things into it the recovery Partiton D drive will not work properly.

  • Using what I believe is image capture, how do I go about pulling up a scanned document and attaching it to send it via email?

Using what I believe is the app Image Capture, exactly how do I go about scanning and attaching a PDF document in order to email it?  After scanning it I'm having trouble locating it while attempting to attach it to an email.  Thanks.

At the bottom left of the Image Capture window is a drop down menu called Scan To which will let you choose where your scan will be sent. Create a folder on your desktop named Scans and send your scans to it. Then rename the scan to whatever will help you remember what it is.
Then when in Mail you can click on Attach and find the Scans folder and attach your scan.

  • What's best: placing images in Photoshop or InDesign?

    Hi guys
Since I hear different things about creating for example posters etc. is this my question: What do you think is best to do when designing a poster or flyer (or whatever) with a nice background, bursh effects, pictures and text?
I do it like this right now:
    Create the background in Photoshop
    place the background.psd in InDesign
add the adjusted images of the artists etc. in InDesign
    add text in InDesign
    Save as PDF
Some say creating the whole poster or design in Photoshop (even cutting out the pictures of the artists and rasterizing them) is better than placing each of them separately in InDesign?
Anyone who has a good website or explanation for me to answer my question? Tips and tricks are welcome!
    Thanks!

If the background is the same behind all images then you better do it in Photoshop because the file size of the background itself  when flatten will be similar with or without all images added on top of it. Other reasons that you may choose to do it as separate images is if you want the different images with different resolutions, for example if the background is some blurry clouds or some abstract gradients you don't really need to be very high resolution and if the images on top have some fine details you may decide to have them with higher resolution. The other consideration is if you want more flexibility with the composition in inDesign in case of eventual changes. So, it all depends on different things. The text you should do in inDesign.

  • What jpeg compression does image capture use to save an image

I am about to scan colour positive slides from many years ago, using image capture and a scanner (Epson 2450 photo).  Can anyone tell me what jpeg compression is used when the scan is saved to disk?  Further, is there any way to alter the quality of suh compression, from say, medium, to highest?

You might be able to find it when you export it from Image Capture.
