What is a SSD and can I install one into my 2008 Macbook Pro?

I searched through some older threads about this and have obtained some basic information. Mainly that I should install a SSD but I'm not 100% what that is. I'm not super tech savy though so any help would be most appreciated. when I took my MBP to the Apple store the genius there called my computer vintage and said I should just buy a new one because there wasn't anything I could do it to make it faster. was he right?
here's my macbooks specs.
MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB
thoughts? thanks!!!!

Replacing a HD with an SSD can give a remarkable boost in performance though you'd still have a vintage Mac. You can check out OWC as a reliable source for SSD's and look at their installation videos to see what the job is like.

  • How can i install windows games in my macbook pro

I m a game lover but since i've macbook pro,i haven't played any game on my macbook...so guys please tell me how can i install windows games to my macbook pro.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

  • HT3986 can i install window 7 for 13" macbook pro

can i install windows 7 for 13" macbook pro ? I got that in august 2012.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can install Windows 7 on your computer without any problem. First, determine if you need Boot Camp or a virtual machine > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321
If you need Boot Camp, get a Windows 7 retail DVD, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps to install Windows. If you want all the steps to install it, you can print this PDF file > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf. Windows 8 support will come with a OS X update.
If you need a virtual machine, you can use Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox. All of them are paid except VirtualBox, and they work well with Windows

  • How can I install Sims 2 on my Macbook Pro?

I can't figure out how to install Sims 2 on my Macbook Pro.. Anyone know how?

That game is over seven years old.  It can't run on any mac in OS X that has 10.7 or later installed.  Are you trying to install in OS X or in a Windows partition?  Also, what happens when it tries to install?  If it mentions something about "PPC", it can't run in OS X. 10.7 or later.

  • Can't install Windows 7 on my Macbook pro.

Hi, I've been trying to install Windows 7 on my Macbook pro, with no luck. I have been able to create a Windows Partition via Bootcamp. And after the Windows 7 installation guide started to expand my Windows files, my Windows 7 CD suddenly stopped spinning. And after a while, the installation guide said that Windows couldn't be installed. And I had to turn off my Mac.

  • I burned home movie in idvd on 2010 iMac and plays fine there but not on 2008 macbook pro. someone mentioned vlc and codex needs?

I created a movie in imovie and burned it to -R disk on my 2010 imac. It plays well there. But when I tried to play it in my 2008 macbook pro it would not play. what I got was two folder icons that said audio and visual and when i clicked on those it brought up several lines I couldn't understand. I did get the audio but not the video.
Apple said the Pro was beyond applecare which I knew but I thought it was iLife issue. They said it was not---that it was a Pro issue. I heard something about needing download of VLC and something about a codex. Not having much of an idea of what I was doing I downloaded a VLC thing and the disk played audio and video. Once. Today it will not play. So that is where I am stuck. Can anyone help please?

    Hi
Does the DVD play on a standard DVD-player ?
If so - then the Pro doesn't need anything. Most probably the problem is due to
    • Cheap brand of DVD used - Memorex and NoName known problem makers - I use Verbatim (only)
    • Burn Speed not set down - I do to x2 - and to select BEST is not a good choice at all as this will be same as Highest = Lot's of burn errors
If DVD plays OK on the other Mac - make a Copy BY USING Disk Util tool and do not forget to set down the Burn Speed !

  • Is 8 gb of RAM safe to install in my early 2008 MacBook Pro? Apple says 4 gb is the maximum.

Apple says that my early 2008 MacBook Pro can only have a maximum of 4 gb of RAM. Has anybody tried adding more than the recommended max? I have heard people say 8 gb is ok but wanted to know if anybody has actually done this. I run parallels desktops with windows 8 and it is incredbily slow. I was thinking if I upgraded the RAM I could dedicate more RAM to both Windows and OSX.

It would appear that the maximum of RAM that an early 2008 MBP will accept is 6 GB.  The specifications are:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  I cannot give you a definitive answer since I do not know the exact model number of your MBP. I suggest that you check with OWC and/or Crucial for a definitive answer to your question.
    Ciao.

  • Mountain Lion instalation crash on late 2008 macbook pro

    Hey,
Since about a week I am trying to install mountain lion on my macbook pro (late 2008).
I'v tried to perform normal instal from snow leopard I also tried to install it from USB drive.
Anyway installation always crashes after this line in log (I tried to save full log but it causes crash too ... )
    Module: PlistFile - ODQueryCreateWithNode completed
by crash I mean autoreboot and information about "restart caused by an error ath the beggining".

Are you just trying to do the upgrade, or did you completely reformat and try to install it from scratch?
I would try that if you haven't already. Back up your important stuff first, then when you boot from USB, open Disk Utility (comes with the installer) and completely re-format your hard drive with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system.
If that still doesn't work, I would take it to an Apple Store.

  • Can't install windows XP to a macbook pro with an Intel X25-M SSD

    It's a strange problem:
We just bought some new unibody macbook pro 2.8Ghz machines, (4GB ram)etc. We also obtained some of the new Solid State Drives (SSDs) from Intel, the X25M-80GB.
    (part number: SSDSA2MH080G1C5)
After installing the SSD into the macbook pro, everything works.....in OSX. Installation of 10.5.5 went without problem, all updates/firmware applied, everything works fine.
The problems start when you try to install XP. We used the boot camp assistant, and created a 32GB partition, put in a XPSP2 disk, and start the installation.
Everything starts up nicely and goes to the blue/white text based installer for XP. It loads drivers, and then reaches the point where it would ask you to select a disk to install to (where you would normally see the three partitions, 1 being the FAT32 you select as C:).
However, what you get instead is an error message that: +"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer...."+ and then you have to exit.
If you use the original 320GB drive, everything works as expected, (nothing wrong with the laptop hardware, or the installation CD). If you stay in OSX, everything works as expected. (nothing wrong with the Intel SSD either)
To further add information, we also installed the Intel SSD into a Mac Pro (2008) as a second drive, booting to a windows installation (through boot camp) on the first disk. Windows boots fine, but there is no sign of the other drive AT ALL. (not a driver issue here - there simply isn't any hardware here as far as windows is concerned.)
That brought us to our conclusion that there is something awry in the BIOS/EFI
being presented to Windows, that doesn't support the Intel X25M drive at all.
However, there is no user customisation (or even access) to the settings or what's happening at that point in the boot cycle, so I'm unable to diagnose further.
Given the Intel SSDs are using their SOC (system on a chip), (I believe - but I could be wrong on that one) perhaps that just isn't supported by the EFI?
Would appreciate some advice on where to go from here? These SSDs cost about 1400AUD+ each, so we'd rather like to actually use them....
I suspect we're asking/requiring for an EFI update.
(to head off some questions: Yes, we've used different discs, and also different computers...The disk and hardware themselves are just fine. Also, the drive WAS formatted with a GPT paritition.)
    Thanks!

From reading Vista forums support for SSD is one of the things Vista SP2 and Windows 7 hope (need) to improve upon. I was in a similar discussion once befoe on SSDs:

I don't think it is EFI issue, but with XP and drivers, lack, and wonder if you can try with Vista?

That won't solve performance issues, but should work.

"My guess is that [Samsung and Microsoft] are maybe working on the OS recognizing an SSD with a 4K-byte sector size instead of a hard disk drive with a 512-byte sector size," Wong said.
Sun is already working with Samsung to bulk up SSD support on the ZFS (Zettabyte File System), which is included in the Solaris OS, and will also be supported in Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.6, codenamed Snow Leopard. Sun is adding capabilities to boost the durability and performance of SSDs on ZFS-based operating systems. For example, Sun may add defragmentation capabilities for SSDs, which organizes data in a particular order to enable quicker data access.
SSDs were not considered ideal for defragmentation because of limited read-and-write capabilities, Wong said. However, Samsung and Sun in July jointly announced an 8G-byte SSD that bumped up durability from 100,000 read-and-write cycles to 500,000. That brings defragmentation in SSDs closer to reality, which could improve its caching and provide quicker access to data. Sun plans to put SSDs into storage products later this year.
