What is a .tar backup file and can I delete it?

I'm cleaning up files on my iMac and noticed a file in my Documents folder (where I keep applications installation files) that is called "backup-fri-feb-08-15_42_35-2013.tar". This file is over 7 gb so I would like to remove it but I can't find anywhere what it is. I found a wiki page that explains that .tar files are old Unix format but what do I need it for and what program created it?

I use an external drive but I use Carbon Copy Cloner instead of Time Machine and I have TM turned off. I'm wondering if it is a backup file from a program I don't even use any longer. I also use Parallels for 2 Windows programs and I'm finding that some of the Windows programs create backups of stuff I don't need or use. Sounds like it would be safe to delete it.
Thanks so much.

What are .ds_store files and can they be removed?

Probably the easiest way is to use Onyx.
If you show invisibles you can see ds_store in each folder.
Open Terminal.app (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and copy & paste this command at the prompt...
    sudo chflags nohidden
    Press return.
    The reverse is
    sudo chflags hidden

  • I have added photos to a portfolio website I'm building and a lot of them look VERY grainy when you click on them. They are nice clean large files and can print bat high res way over 16" x 20" so whats happened to them in iWeb?

When you are dealing with websites, image file size is a trade off between quality and download speed. There's not a lot of point to having high quality images if they take too long to download in the browser.
Nowadays we also have to consider the device that the end user is viewing the images on. An image that is optimized for viewing on a large screen is total overkill and unsuitable for those using mobile devices.
Really we should be supplying different versions of media files for different devices using @media rules in the stylesheet but this is rather outside of the scope of iWeb. If you use the built in image optimizer and the iWeb Photo template with slideshow, the application will optimize the images according to the way in which you set this function in preferences and the slideshow size will be automatically reduced for those viewing it on smaller screens.
If you want to give your viewers the opportunity to view large, high quality images, you can supply them as a download.

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do now?

iPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do?

a common problem is that you don't have permission to upload those files, but it is an easy fix
    1) Finder
    2) Users(it should have the account name on it)
    3) pictures
    4) right click on iphoto library then click info
5 on the bottom of the new window there should be a sharing and permissions tab
    6) make sure you have permission to read & write
The only other problem I can think is that you are having problems with hard drive space. if so you might want to clean up your hard drive to free up some space. please let me know if that worked for you.

  • Difference(s) in usage of a ".json" bookmark backup file and a ".html" bookmark file

    Hello to all,
What is the difference between usage of a ".json" bookmark backup file and a ".html" bookmark file? It seems both of them are doing the same job. If it is the case, then why there are two options (.json and .html) for doing the same job? If not, then what is the reason behind availability of the two options and how do they differ? Although I've read all the related documentaion, it's not quite clear form me yet. Please be kind enough to elaborate on the question so that I can get a clear understanding of their right usage(s).
Thank you very much in advance for your time and expertise

If a user account is deleted and the data for that account is not deleted, it is placed there. Yes, you can delete the files there.

Repair permissions and restart your computer.  If this does not work, zap the pram.  You should now see your external hard drive.

  • I purchased PDF Converter, it isn't what I needed for my files.  Can I get a refund?

After I purchased a PDF Converter, it isn't what I needed for my files.  Can I get a refund or a credit on my account?

Apple considers all sales as final. Apple expects folks to do theoir homework before purchasing. You will receive a receipt in your email for the purchase 24 to 48 hours later and you can use the Report a problem link to initiate a conversation with iTunes Support about a refund. Apple sometimes gives a one-time refund. The question for you is do you want to use this one-time refund on this app or save it for a more costly app in the future?

    I'd appreciate it.

Why do you want to delete those?  What have you done so far to do that?
I doubt that Mac has a virus.  On the other hand, your attempts to deleted those folders may have caused corruption.
    Two other comments:
    1) Is there a reason that Mac hasn't been updated to OS X 10.5.8?
    2) You've been misled by the poor field labeling on this Web site into trying to type your entire post into the "subject" field.  In the future, just put a short summary of your post into that field.

Doesn't sound like much of a backup plan, but why not just wipe your backup drive and make a fresh backup of your current system? Be easier and safer,

  • Backup file and locations?

Using Yosemite, and LR4, somehow I seem to have two backup folders (that I am aware of):
    - a folder on my desktop called Lightroom with a subtler called Backups with nothing in it
    - another Lightroom folder inside of a folder on my desktop, and this one contains a Backups folder with lots of dates subfolders.
    - it also contains a .lrdata file, a .lrcat, .db, .db-journal, .db and another .db-journal file
    1. Can I safely delete the folder on my desktop called Lightroom that does not contain anything?
    2. Can I move the other Lightroom folder with the backups to another location? If so, how do I tell LR of the new location?
    Thanks.

If you have LR set up to make a backup each time you close simply quit the program and when the backup dialog appears click the choose button to change the existing file path for the regular backups.
You can then delete the empty desktop folder.

  • When i open an mp3 file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

when I open a music file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place.  The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file.  You can delete the original if you wish.
