What is 'acceptable' disk space

Hello -
I have already posted on FCP and DVDSP boards, because I am having a problem with programs running to a certain point, and it was suggested to me that my available disk space might be an issue.
I have an iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.10), that came with 74GB of space on the hard drive, to which I now have about 10GB available. When I got the computer, I did also get extra RAM, I think an extra 512MB. The problems I'm having are when I connect the FireWire for my camera to my MAC, I get the 'spinning beach ball', and also, when trying to import video that is already on my computer, into DVDSP, I also get the 'beach ball'. Could the lack of space contribute to these issues? I did indeed clear out a bunch of files, but see that I can probably move tutorials, and clean out some more files, etc... Thank you for your help!

Hi again Kristina!
I think alot of the problem you're currently having has to do with the amount of free disk space you have.
If you're using FCP or DVDSP etc... it needs to write to your disk before being able to burn a DVD. This is where disk space is critical, if you don't have enough, you won't be able to burn disks.
If you are shutting down your Mac and next time you boot up, it shows only having 575m of Ram available, look into this: open System Preferences > Accounts > Login items, look here for programs that may be starting when you boot up. If you don't need these login items, remove them. You can also Open Utiltiies > Actvity Monitor > System Memory... look for the "Real Memory" tab, click (triangle down) and see what is using up all your Ram (memory)...

Also, look at the bottom of Actvity Monitor, and see how much VM (virtual memory) is being used... post back

  • What are the disk space requirements for CC2014?

Yes, Adobe has the system requirements for each INDIVIDUAL app in CC2014 listed, but they're all listed separately. Since I'll be installing the entire suite on my new machine, I'd like to know the disk space requirements for the ENTIRE suite.
    Thanks

There's a summary in the table at the bottom of the page here:

  • What is free disk space?

I am trying to download to the computer and it keeps telling me "not enough disk space". How do I free up that space?

By moving files (not applications) to an external hard drive.

  • Reclaiming disk space from deleted emails

I have had lots of issues with my internal disk on my powerbook running out of space and decided to do some clearing out of emails. I have my mail set to store on server and on my mac and have kept emails going back to 2004.
I used mailsteward software to archive old emails and then have deleted those emails from within mail app, deleting more than 20,000 emails.
The emails have gone but hasn't freed up an awful lot of space, maybe 100Mb when I was expecting a lot more than that.
Is this possibly because the actual mailbox files don't get shrunk back? Is there something I can do to reclaim the disk space? I have done a mailbox rebuild but that didn't do much either.
    Thanks,
    Mike

If you archive the mail using Mail Steward, then delete the items from the Mail database, exactly what change in disk space would you actually expect? You've just changed the location of the mail archive from a Mail database to a MailSteward database.

  • Insufficient Disk Space: What do I do? I do not want to delete all of my projects. If I delete them and then empty the trash it will free up some space but I have deleted way more than I am tryig to import.

I keep getting a message when I try to import pics. Insufficient disk space. What do I do? I do not want to delete all of my pics!

Easiest thing to do would be to buy an external hard drive and move your Aperture library to that drive.

  • What's taking up my disk space?

I have an iMac with a 500-gig drive. All my photos and videos are on an external drive. According to "info" the internal drive has 384Mb of disk space left! For the life of me I can't find what is taking up all the disk space and it's driving me crazy. Any way to find what directory, or directories are chewing up all the disk space? I have OS X 10.6.8.

no, it works in Snow Leopard.  I used Snow Leopard before I installed Lion.  Being new to mac, you will find these links helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/, http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

I am trying to update to OS X Mavericks but I cant seem to. Everytime I try to install it, I get an error saying I don't have enough disk space or FindReaperFiles closed unexpectedly. What do I do?

That isn't the problem. When I start the download of Mavericks I have more than enough space on the disk drive. However, once it has downloaded and it is attempting to install this error occurs:
Any ideas where I could re-download FindReaperFiles? From what I can see it's an Apple file but I can't find a download on their site at all.
    Thanks!

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

I was cleaning up my laptop to free up some disk space. I now can't get into my itunes ??? It's saying Itunes was not installed correctly error 7 (windows error 14003)

Is there also another message, Rob, citing a particular file? If so what is the name of the file? (Precise spelling, please.)
Are you running XP, Vista or 7? (I'm assuming 2000 must have just been a slip of the fingers.)

  • What is the best way to add hard disk space to macbook pro?

I'm running out of disk space on my macbook pro. What is the best way to add disk space?

another way of doing it is to replace your hard drive with a larger one.
if you're technically capable, it takes 10 minutes for the swap and an hour minimum to clone your hard drive or do a data transfer.  all depends on how much data there is to trandfer or to clone.
    good luck.

  • What to do with low disk space warning?

My Time Capsule is blinking amber because of low disk space. Isn't it supposed to delete the oldest files to make more room? What should I do at this point?

Nothing. That warning is separate from Time Machine.
It's useful if you're using your Time Capsule for other data, but Time Machine will take care of running out of room for backups all by itself.

  • Hi, In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?

    Hi,
In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?
I want to free up disk space, and I've already backed up with an external hard drive, and moved files around.  I still have over 60gbs of "other" to tend to, and I'm not sure where to start.
    I appreciate any help!

"Other" is everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, and backups. It includes your email messages and attachments, all your documents, downloads, and OS X itself.

  • What is taking up my disk space?

I have a Mac Book Pro, and I have almost no disk space left. I think I know where the problem is...I take a lot of pictures. But when I load them to iPhoto, it saves them in multiple folders: Original, Modified and Recovered. Can I delete one or more of these folders? The last time I tried something like that, I lost all of my thumbnails in iPhoto, making it useless. I compressed a folder then un-compressed it, and they were all gone. I really don't know what to do here. Can anyone tell me exactly what's going on?

You are in the Leopard Server forum. You may find better answers in the iLife forum.

  • What can be done so that these files do not eat up all the disk space.

    Dear Adviser
This is NOT a bug report or an enhancement request.
We are looking for advice on a customer support call.
We are using iPlanet Webserver 4.1 SP7 and iPlanet Directory
    Server 4.12 on Solaris 2.8.
We are checking to see if there is any engineering
documentation or quick pointers on LDAP database file
sizes and cache file sizes that may relate to a
    reported problem.
Thank you for your time and co-operation in advance.
We have been working on a TIBCO/Portal Builder customer
issue that does not seem to have guidance in end
user documentation. This is related to a significant
increase in LDAP and cache file sizes (which at this
point do NOT seem to affect any performance). Is this
something that you are aware of from your QA/performance
tests? The problem seems to have suddenly cropped
up and we are attempting to isolate the triggerring event.
We started with the possibility that it is
    a. Solaris Platform issue
    OR
    b. LDAP issue
We have done several experiments to isolate specific
issues as described below. We have researched
Sun/iPlanet web site and technical sites on the net.
Currently, we believe that the LDAP database size is increasing
because the Portal has been configured with pages
that have a lot of "Personalized" panes. Users are visiting
these pages, and getting automatically subscribed to these
panes, which add corresponding entries in the LDAP server.
Please find below the listing of all the files (from LDAP
DB directory) which are growing very fast. Kindly advise what can be
done so that these files do not eat up all the disk space.

This may be perfectly normal behavior for the LDAP server. If some application is adding a lot of data to the server, the database will necessarily grow. You can look at the access log to find out the IP address of the client, the BIND dn of the client, and the operations from that client. Perhaps this will help you narrow down the culprit.

thanks for your suggestion.  that is the same advice that i got from the geek squad at the local apple store.
i did what he instructed but it did not work.  i have since called apple support twice regarding the problem.  they had me start the computer in safe mode, going into the library and deleting a phlist file (i think) do a repair disk permissions, do a repair disk, empty the cache, and finally the last guy told me to unplug the computer from the wall socket and restart.
when i mentioned the advice you and the apple store guy gave me they sort of poo pooed it saying that was done when they did all this other stuff.
i am now waiting for the download to be completed to see if unplugging the computer had any effect.
thanks again for your kindness in answering my concern.
