What happens to old Reading List items?

In Safari 7 what happens to items in the Reading List after they are read? Are they deleted automatically? If so, when? (I know it is not right away.)
In previous versions the items flagged as "Read" would be grayed out, and I could clear them one by one to keep them from cluttering things up. In the newest version, however it seems to be impossible to tell which ones are "Read" without right-clicking and examining the context menu.
Even better, of course, would be a button or menu option to clear the "Read" items en masse.

I am probably telling you something you already know, but if you pull down on the Bookmarks - Reading List - Shared Links pane while viewing your Reading List, you can choose between "All" and "Unread." The options are hidden just above the search bar in Reading List.
Also, you can right-click (control click) on the list to mark an item as read/undread, remove an item, or clear all items.
But you're right, there's no easy way to separate the "read" from the "unread."

Open the site in Safari, then tap on the arrow coming out of a box to open the action options.
Tap on Add to Reading List. (The pair of reading glasses)

After my upgrade to iOS6, my iPhone4 lost all entries in the Reading List and Bookmarks. I cannot add new entries. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I'm not 100% positive that this is related to the iOS6 upgrade, but the timing is certainly suspicios. Previously, I had 7 entries in Safari's readling list and many entries in the Bookmarks. Now, I have nothing except the large pair of sunglasses and help text that tells me how to add a link to the reading list.
When I am looking at a webpage and click on the Forward button, I'm giving all sorts of choices now in full color... facebook... Message... Twitter... Mail... Add to homescreen. The following buttons are all grey: Print, Copy, Bookmark, and Add to Reading List.
I'm guessing that the icon color is a red herring. Print and Copy, despite being grey, appear to work fine. Bookmark and Add to Reading List have problems.
Adding to the Reading List makes the forwarding screen go away, as though the link was added. When I click on the Bookmark icon and look at my reading list, it remains empty, displaying the large sunglasses and help text, as though the list has never had an entry added to it.
Adding a Bookmark prompts me to enter the name and location. Interestingly, the list of locations is empty. I have a single folder with no name and a check mark next to it. I cannot do anything else (make a new folder, for example). Once added, when I click on the Bookmark icon to look at my bookmarks, that list remains empty of individual bookmarks. All I have are: Reading List (still empty), History (full of expected entries), Bing (which takesme to some Bing thing).
Any help in restoring my bookmarks and Reading List entries would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks. That solved it. I had my doubts since I wasn't concerned about my lost bookmarks. I was concerned about the broken functionality. In any event, restoring from a backup solved both the functionality and the lost bookmarks. I appreciate the response!

The Reading List does what now??

I thought this would be a useful new iOS 5 feature, until I realized you couldn't use it offline. Instead, I'm trying to figure out how the Add to Reading List feature in Safari is any different from bookmarks? They're even located in the same area? Just seems useless, but wanted to hear opinions on whether anyone else has found a good use for it?

I completely agree. I thought I could add articles to it and then be able to read them on the subway when I'm underground with no internet connection. This "feature" seems to be broken. Why would I need to access the internet to find the article and then need to access the internet again to read it later?? It makes no sense. Your phone or other device should be able to store the text/images assuming that you have enough available free memory space. Apple please fix!! Don't let things fall apart already!

Reading list sync between iMac and iPad for offline reading

If I add to reading list on my iMac, and then go to the reading list on the iPad, all is OK. I can read the items, but only if I am connected to the internet. Is it possible to set up reading list that means the content of the page is also somehow cached to the ipad? for reading off line... Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I have set up my email address both within my iMac and my ISP as IMAP accounts and I receive all emails without problem on my iMac. I have also set up an iCloud email address using my iMac.
I have enabled the email within "setting" on my iPad and have used the iCloud account. I have sent emails from the iMac to iPad using the iCloud account address and vice versa. I have also sent emails from the iPad to the iMac using my non-iCloud email address and they have gotten through.
The one thing I would like to have is for the iPad "mail" mailboxes to mimic the iMac "mail" mailboxes and both to be "in sync". I am not really interested in using the iCloud email address for my email but would really like to use my "normal" addresses as these are what most people know me by.
Do I need to set additional accounts within the iPad which are the same as the email accounts I have within the iMac and my ISP? I have reached the end of my knowledge as regards email synchronsing.

If you want to delete something from your Reading List in Safari, swipe left on an item in your Reading List.
If you want to add something to your Reading List, long tap on a link and tap "Add to Reading List".

Why some pages are not available offline in Safari reading list?

From time to time I experience surprises that some web pages are not available offline in reading list of Safari - link is stored, but content - no.
I was thinking that I was closing Safari too fast before pages downloaded.
But I rechecked - I gave safari enough time and it still not downloaded.
When internet connection is available pages are readable, but not in offline.
And related to issue:
Should I open Safari to allow to download page, when I add page to reading list from other applications by selecting "Add to reading list"?

YEs, it's totally frustrating... I'll never again just go along with an upgrade. After upgrading to IOS8 the reading list feature no longer works.
I even tried the factory reset, clearing out everything and making my iPad 2 like it was originally. And I didn't restore from backup either, afraid whatever bug it is would come back. I even installed iCab Mobile, and Readability... nothing works!
I Really, really, regret upgrading. I want my fully functioning IOS7 back!!
IS there any way to get IOS7 back, 'coz this IOS8 is for the birds?!

I just tried it this way.
Opened the page I wanted to be added to the Reading List.
Clicked the Share button, then selected "Add to Reading List" from the dropdown.
Quit Safari, turned WiFi off.
Turned WiFi on and launched Safari.
Clicked Reading List item in the Safari sidebar. Cached page was availabe.
If this didn't happen, try emptying cahes, deleting .plist file and turn off extensions.
Empty Caches
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Delete safari .plist file.
Quit all applications. Click on an empty spot on the desktop to activate Finder.
Hold the “Option” key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select “Library” from the drop down.
Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
Right click it and select "Move to Trash". Close Finder window.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
Safari > Preferences > Extensions

My reading list on iPad isn't working

If I tap on Add to reading list, nothing happens anymore (it used to work, also with iCloud).
And I cannot delete current entries.
And also I cannot modify bookmarks anymore (it used to work).
I already checked the iCloud password and account.
I activate the Safari iCloud button on and off.

Clear Safari, close Safari, reset your iPad.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
In order to close Safari, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

OK, your are looking for "Add to Reading List" button.
It is available by default but hidden.
Move the mouse pointer to the very left in the Safari address bar, a "+" sign in a circle will appear.
Click it to add an item to Reading list.

Reading list on Computer and iphone

in IOS6, reading list synchronization is available for iphone and computer. when in safari i add to reading list, its not automatically updated to my computer's Safari browser (reading list). i have already installed icloud control panel on computer (Window 7) and successfully synching contact, reminders etc. but reading list is not being updated as it is on my iphone.
Please help if anybody knows

Hopefully after the desktop iWork apps get updated sooner rather than any later to take advantage of iCloud it will work. For now, the best you can do is download & upload documents to iCloud via iCloud.com's iWork interface.

Can no longer add / remove to bookmarks / reading list since ios 6 upgrade

Hi all,
I upgraded my ipod touch to ios 6 last night, and since the upgrade I can no longer add / remove bookmarks or add / remove items to the reading list in safari.
Whenever I try I get the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
So far I've tried;
A hard reset
Turning off Safari in the icloud settings
I still can't do anything with the bookmarks / reading list, I just don't get the 'Bookmarks are being synced' message
Ensuring that push notifications are enabled for icloud
I'm not sure what to try next.....
When I disable Safari in the icloud settings, it asks me if I want to keep a copy of previously synched bookmarks on my ipod - So far I have as I don't want to lose them.
I'm guessing the next step is to not keep a copy and hope ios wipes them - If I do this will the bookmarks still be available in icloud when I turn safari data back on?

I actually managed to fix it! But unfortunately I don't know what I was that I did that helped.
Anyways, this is kind of what I did.
1. I tried to reset form bakup via iTunes, no change.
2. I tried to reset as a new iPhone, problem still there and reading list also as bookmarks!? (several hundred)
3. Noticed that I could delete a bookmark, once in a while, the other times I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
4. Because I figured that it was a memory problem, I thought it made sense to delete as many as possible, witch I did.
5. Noticed that it was more likely that I coould delete a bookmark if I restarted Safari.
6. Notice that it was even more likely that I could delete a bookmark if I turned the Safari sync with iCould off (with option detete information on iPhone) and then back on again.
7. When I was about half way through deleting the bookmark list I suddenly discovered that all but one of the items in my reading list was 'waiting' and one was downloading. I kind of was 'unstuck' now.
8. I started to delete items in my reading list, but every other time I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
9. It took a while to delete all bookmarks and items in the reading list.
Hope you guys could use the info here to fix your problems too!

there is a workaround you can try, create audience and add DL to them and deal with the audience or convert DL to groups
