What is an "image well"

I'm trying to drop an image from iPhoto into an object (circle) in Pages. According the Pages/Help, I can "drag and drop an image from the finder onto the "image well" in the graphics inspector.
What is an image well? I don't see any place on the graphics inspector that lets me drop an image.
Jim

There are limitations for using this method. For one thing the image will be centered. Period. There is no fine adjustments afterwards. You can set it to scale with the object, stay at it's original size, tile, etc.
If you drag the image into the actual object on the document page, in Pages '08 that object will automagically become a mask for the image. Be aware, though, that the image may come in at it's orignal size, or very close, and require tweaking to get it's scale and position correct.
If you place the image on the page, scale it outside the object you want to use as a mask, and then mask with the selected shape you will find that it behaves correctly, and your image will be masked.
Masking is better than filling with an image. You haev much more control over the way your final cropped image will appear.
(If you wanted teh Tinted Image fill, just put an identical sized shape over top of your cropped image and use the slider at the bottom of the color selector to set the transparency.)

  • OpenGL shader builder - empty image wells

I'm trying to use OpenGl shader builder (from graphicstools_june_2014.dmg).
I load several textures, but image wells in left part is empty.
I can see my textures,  and can work with them,  but it is inconvenient.
In user guide it is ok - see second picture.

There was an even earlier build than the two mentioned.
Talk about "early revisions" I guess so, and it doesn't look like there will be a unified version tomorrow.
I recall AYM had a note about video performance and in that instance, the build on the DVD was never than what was on the hard drive and within a week or so disk drives carried the "new, improved" video on disk as well.
There may be other changes that go hand-in-hand other than build, too. Did they look at the Boot ROM and SMC Version of the systems?
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B00
    SMC Version: 1.7f6

  • What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also should I avail myself of something that works with Thunderbolt or Firewire?

What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro (I7, Lion OS) apart from my Kingston flash and USB drive, and the SD drives that I use in my cameras and recording devices?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also, should I avail myself of something that works with the Thunderbolt or Firewire connections?  I'm looking to back up music and video files created and/or processed in Logic Pro and the Adobe Production Premium software suite (Premier Pro, After Effects, Audition, etc).

Hmm, not sure what problems you had installing this drive. The review here gives it good marks for Mac:
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/produc t-reviews/B00E3W16OU
There does seem to be a lot of prep to make it work:
"1. Preparation to install your new shiny SSD
1.a You will need a migration tool (I used the Sabrent kit USB 3.0 to Sata that was suggested in these review) see link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQJME7Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&p sc=1
1.b You will need to download a trim enabler (mid 2012 macbooks only support native trim with apple brand ssd's) I recommend going to cindori.org and downloading trim enabler version 3.xx. You can do this step before or after the OS migration
1.c You cannot use the Samsung SSD migration software *don't worry Mac has its own imaging/migration utility*"
    Also in those reviews:
" Only down side when using this product in a Mac Mini is you will be required to download and install Trim Enabler so that your drive performs optimally on your Mac device. This is an Apple issue, not Samsung, but it is an extra step you will have to take after you install the hard drive, and any time you perform an OS upgrade." He rant's on.
Personally I only deal with OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/
They are very knowledgable and if there's a problem they will gladly take back the item. (Never happened to me yet - 8 years and counting).
Just upgraded my 13" MBP 2011 to 120 GB for $79. Adobe CS 6 opens in 3 seconds! Awesome!
When I was in Chicago I had a pro photographer for a client. She wound up with 4 internal drives in her Pro, 4 external drives and an dual array locked in a steel vault in the basement. All from OWC. OK she was a bit paranoid. Great client though.
As far as value for price:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MES3FH7500G/
    500 GB for $130.
However as far as reliability is concerned:
    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/30/are-ssds-reliable/
    http://www.extremetech.com/computing/173887-ssd-stress-testing-finds-intel-might -be-the-only-reliable-drive-manufacturer
So sudden power loss is an issue with SSDs.
Personally I'd go with a moderate sized SSD internally and a conventional external for backup. An array would be the most reliable.

  • Knowing what type of image one is manipulating

    Hello,
Suppose I get an inputstream from a web form.
    1. How can I check that I have an image and not another type of binary file?
    2. How do I know what type of image I have (jpg, or gif)?
    Thanks in advance,

Hi! I have the same problem! I get a byte array from the database and i know that is an image but i can't get the extension or the mime types. It could be a gif, jpeg or a png. I tried to open the byte array and read the first bytes( for png you get something like PNG and for gif GIF89) but this didn't work for me.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Use image from Aperture in Xcode image well

Is it possible to extract an image from Aperture and display this image in an Xcode image well?
I have a script that searches for and extracts a required image in the format:
image version id B4bCHCfeR969OQ7SEcUsOQ of library id LibraryFolder
I now want to display the image in an ApplescriptObjC project, how do I build a path to the image well?
Hope this makes sense, as usual, any help gratefully received.

    Frinton Fogey wrote:
I have been trying to use that same script but changing selcting an image to searching for an image but it won't work, please show me the error of my ways!
    set theImage to "Image 1"
    tell application "Aperture"
set ims to every image version
              set names to {}
repeat with i from 1 to count of ims
set n to get the name of item i of ims
set names to names & n
              end repeat
set imageSel to first image version whose name is theImage
export imageSel using export setting "JPEG - Original Size" to (path to desktop)
    end tell
Giving this a closer look you could condense the script down to
    set theImage to "IMG_08067"
    tell application "Aperture"
              try
set imageSel to first image version whose name is theImage
              on error errTxt number errNum
display dialog "Error: " & errNum & return & errTxt
                        tell me to quit
              end try
export imageSel using export setting "JPEG - Original Size" to (path to desktop)
    end tell
You don't appear to be doing anything with the repeat loop or variables and you're always taking the first image you find with the name.
So here we look in the whole library for an image with the name and if we find it we export it. The try/error block is to catch times that the name you are looking for isn't in the library.

  • What does an image of a closed lock on top of image of bar with line of dots on macbook pro window mean?

What does an image of a closed lock over an image of a bar with a line of dots on a macbook pro screen mean?

It's a bit hard to say wthout seeing it, it might by YDB Syndrome, the plague that was first described, documented and named by eminent and white-coated InDesign specialist Claudia McCue here.  Another fix for that is to try making the background colour process or RGB, not a Pantone Spot Colour.  If that doesn't work you could try posting a screenshot on this forum, use the camera tool on the web interface to upload a previously saved screenshot.

  • What types of images is supported???

    Hi,
Do u what type of images files (e.g. .jpg, .gif, .wbmp, .png & etc..) are supported by handheld devices especially in wml files?

Right now you can't display a GIF in J2ME, only PNG. So you will need to convert your GIF images to PNG.
As to writing your own GIF reader, this job is better under taken on a server. If you really want to you can find the PNG spec at: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-png.html

  • What size still images work best for iMovie to create a book trailer?

I'm trying to create a book trailer using still images and text in iMovie. I purchased some 280px images from gettyimage and find they are too small. When viewed on a full screen the images are degraded. What size still image works best to make a book trailer in iMovie that will be posted on You Tube. Thanks in advance. I am an iMovie newbie.

iM supports a max. export resolution of 1920x1080 pixel ..
if you need to add Ken Burns effects, res should be, of course, higher..
no such thing as 'dpi' with video, only absolute pixels count ..
due to the many conversion processes happening on import, processing and export, care for as less compression as possible for the imported files ..
this YT-demo is done in iM09 with some pics from my Lib, native res of originals is ~6Mpix/~3MB size/jpegs ..
ahh, and Welcome betinski61 to the  iM boards ...

I used All Recorder on Windows, exclusively to record streaming radio programs.  What would work similarly well on Mac?  Audacity?

You have various options, depending on your needs and the source you want to record, for instance,
    - Audio Hijack Pro (or its cheaper cousin Piezo);
    - WireTap;
    - iRecordMusic;
In terms of free apps, you can try VLC (which won't work with certain streams, eg, BBC), iMagneto, or the audio editor Audacity in conjunction with a tool like Soundflower.
You can probably find a few more options if you google it, but I'd say these are the main ones.

  • Combining multiple layers into one "final image" then working on each layer's opacity to affect what the final image looks like

Ideally the "final" image would be displayed.  I'd go over to the layers panel and work on each layer, dialing up and down the opacity and see the effects on the "final" image.  This is in regards to interior real estate.  Normally I combine my images in Photomatix (different exposures) and have that method down.  But what I'd like to be able to do is to, say, strobe different areas of the scene while shooting maybe six images (same exposure), load those six into CS5 (File>Scripts>Load Files Into Stack) then proceed.
I've looked at a ton of videos on Youtube and searched CS5 Help and just can't find the answer to what exactly what I'm trying to do.  I can choose Edit>Auto-Blend Layers and that does indeed give me a final image (like in Enfuse or Photomatix) but I haven't found a way to then adjust each individual layer to affect that final image.  And I know there's a way, maybe coming at this from a completely different direction.  Thanks.

Ok I will take the last question first, since that is probably the easiest.end
A merged file or a flattened file is the same thing as a composite.
A merged file still has its transparency and data that is outside the canvas area.
A flattened file is a merged file that is converted to a background layer that does not support transparency or data outside the canvas.
A composite can be a merged copy of the existing layers if you use the multiple key strokes I mentioned above. Whereas a merged file is a composite of the original layers. So I personally use the term composite to mean a copy as merged and flatten already explain that process, no need to give them an additional term to mean the same thing.
Generally blend modes work by selecting individual layers before changing the blend mode. However you can group the layers or convert them to a smart object and apply a blend to that group or object.
Normally you set the blend mode as you work on each layer. But you could set all of them to overlay or reduce the opacity to 30 or 50 percent to see through all the layers, then adjust them later on.
I am not sure how it works on the mac, but on windows you can select the blend text box then use the up and down arrow keys to change the blend mode to see how it looks.
I recommend that you go through the free videos on layers, masks, opacity, and layer styles. This will help you dramatically. Also a few books on the subject will help has well.

  • Disk Utility: What does "scan image for restore" do?

Before restoring a disk image, I know that I need to use Disk Utility's "Scan Image for Restore…" feature.
Exactly what does this feature do?

    I asked because I didn't know.
I was helping someone upgrade his PowerMac G5 from the original 80GB hard drive to a 1TB drive.
Since the G5 can accommodate two internal drives, I could have simply added the new drive and used Disk Utility's "restore" feature to migrate his data directly from the old drive to the new drive.
But it was more convenient for me to work at home so I removed the old drive, and brought it home along with the new drive.
I couldn't connect both drives to my MacBook Pro, since I only have one SATA drive dock. So I did it like this:
    1. Connected the old drive to my SATA dock.
    2. Create a disk image from his old drive, saving it to an external USB drive.
    3. Disconnected the old drive from the SATA dock and connected the new one.
    4. Restore the disk image to the new drive
Of course, when I tried step 4, I got an error message about needing to do a scan first. That's what led me to this question.
I have a follow-up question: When I created the image, I didn't bother changing the default image format, which is "compressed." If I had given the matter a little thought, I could have created a read-only image, since I would never need to change the image.
If I had used read-only, would Disk Utility have created the checksums on-the-fly when it created the disk image?
