    Simplistically...
    A method is a block of code that makes some Objects in the block of code abstract (those abstract Objects are the parameters of the method). This allows us to reuse the method passing in different Objects (arguments) each time.
    In a similar way, Generics allows us to take a Class and make some of the types in the class abstract. (These types are the type parameters of the class). This allows us to reuse the class, passing in different types each time we use it.
    We write type parameters (when we declare) and type arguments (when we use) inside < >.
    For example the List class has a Type Parameter which makes the type of the things in the list become abstract.
    A List<String> is a list of Strings, it has a method "void add(String)" and a method "String get(int)".
    A List<File> is a list of Files, it has a method "void add(File)" and a method "File get(int)".
    List is just one class (interface actually but don't worry about that), but we can specify different type arguments which means the methods use this abstract type rather than a fixed concrete type in their declarations.
    Why?
    You spend a little more effort describing your types (List<String> instead of just List), and as a benefit, you, and anyone else who reads your code, and the compiler (which also reads your code) know more accurately the types of things. Because more detail is known, the compiler is able to tell you when you screw up (as opposed to finding out at runtime). And people understand your code better.
    Once you get used to them, its a bit like the difference between black and white TV, and colour TV. When you see code that doesn't specify the type parameters, you just get the feeling that you are missing out on something. When I see an API with List as a return type or argument type, I think "List of what?". When I see List<String>, I know much more about that parameter or return type.

    There is no Transfer class in Java 6. There are a number of classes with 'transfer' in the name, but none of them is 'Transfer'. So what class are you referring to?
    One thing you might do while you mull that over, is check the since tag for the class. If it does not have one listed, try the since tag for the package. Yes, that requires RTFM.

    Dear java programmers,
    I have a question regarding the ExecutorService class from java.util.concurrent package.
    I want to parse hundreds of files and for this purpose I'm implementing a thread pool. The way I use the ExecutorService class is summarized below:

            executor.shutdownNow();However, the code snippet above creates all the 1000 threads (Dock objects) at once and loads them to the executor, and thus I'm worrying about memory leak. I haven't tested it on 1000 files yet but just on 50 small ones, and even if the program prints out "Parsing file No "+i 50 times at once, it executes normally the threads in the background.
    I guess the write way would be to keep the number of active/idle threads in the executor constant (lets say 20 if the thread pool's size is 10) and submit a new one whenever a thread has been finished or terminated. But for this to happen the program should be notified someway whenever a thread is done. Can anybody help me do that?

    Ok I found a feasible solution myself although I'm not sure if this is the optimum.
    Here's what I did:
            ExecutorService executor = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(10);
            Future<String> future0, future1, future2, future3, future4, future5, future6, future7, future8, future9;
            Future[] futureArray = {future0 = null, future1 = null, future2 = null, future3 = null, future4 = null, future5 = null,
            future6 = null, future7 = null, future8 = null, future9 = null};
            for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++){
                futureArray[i] = executor.submit(new Dock(i));
            }I created the ExecutorService object which encapsulates the thread pool and then created 10 Future objects (java.util.concurrent.Future) and added them into an Array.

    Dear all,
    Given that I have a user defined class loaded in the VM. If I no longer have access to the .java or .class files, how can I get a serialised version of the class?
    I am doing the following:
    Class clazz = MyClass.class;
    File file = new File("c:\\MyClass.class");
    ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(file));
    oos.writeObject(clazz);
    oos.flush();
    oos.close();
    But when I try to execute the resulting MyClass.class file, I get a bad magic number exception. I think this has something to do with the class checksum value at the start of a valid class file. I am using j2sdk v1.4.
    What is the best approach to writing the in-memory class to a file, or better still, to a byte array?

    have a program that:

    use a static setter
    StaticGettersSetters.setArray(list);
    next program:

    public static java.util.List queryArray =
    StaticGettersSetters.getArray();
    If I don't define queryArray with the package and class, the compiler
    gives an error that the List class in java.awt is invalid for queryArray.
    If I import the util package, import java.util.*; , the compiler
    gives an error that the list class is ambiguous.
    Question:
    If you using a class that exists in multiple packages, is the above declaration of queryArray the only way to declare it ?

    So what you have to do is explicitly tell the compiler which one you really want by spelling out the fully-resolved class name:

  • How can you tell what version of JDK a class was compiled under

    Kind Folks,
    I have a Java application purchased from a vendor that is certified to run under JDK/JRE 1.2xxx. I recently received some extensions to the application from the vendor's consulting arm but I am having problems with the extensions. I believe the extensions were compiled under JDK 1.3xxxx but I need tp prove it to the vendor. Is there a way I can verify what version of JDK a class file was compiled under?

    ...version of JDK a class file was compiled under? Not sure that makes sense. The class files will run the same under both. The only difference you would see is if you got a class not found or a method not found exception. If the class/method does not exist in 1.2 but does exist in 1.3 then that is where they were compiled. Manually verifying that would take a lot of work. Running it, as long as you excercise all of the functionality, (and presuming your app is not eating exceptions/errors when it shouldn't) then you should get an exception telling you of the error.

  • About Memory Leak in JAVA Any body pls help me

    Hi All,
    In our application, with JAVA we are using c, c++ native methods also.
    The problem is, Eventhough the application is in idle state, the Virtual Memory occupation is getting increased. For 24 hours, 30 MB is increased, while the application is in idle state.
    Is there any possiblity, this much memory leak can happen in JAVA. or it is from Native c side..
    I would appreciate anybody' s help.

    I am using JProfiler for that. I can observe what kind of objects not getting freed and the size of memory it is taking. and i observed thro JProfiler, that is only 16 kb of memory leak is happening. Can Any body who is well known about JProfiler help me. Can i differentiate the memory leak from JAVA and Native C side using JProfiler.

    Our PROD agent suddenly started not responding . The package showing execution in monitor without showing what code it is executing. This continuously exeecuting package then we had to set to error and then we went with execution with Local(no agent) which got executed successfuly in prod but still having issues with PROD agent.
    Oracle proposed the sol- "Oracle keeps proposing enlarging the memory of the java stack " The sol worked for few days and again facing the same issue. One of the
    query raised by oracle is
    "Ask the developers if they are using standard transaction processing knowledge modules and if they have considered using BULK loading type knowledge modules ? Please
    ask them for the precise name of the Knowledge Modules used and if they have been customized or not"
    How to identify this in detail? Any clue . We are using the standard KM and havent customized any KM

    The question is what Knowledge modules are you using? Some use Bulk type processing, others transaction based. You can list knowledge modules by interface using a SQL query like this one :

    HASPJava.dll is used by verification  License and is invoked less and can't use a lot of native memory.
    Our business is communicating between java and COM component. In order to implement it, we used JavaCom to generate java class for COM component.
    Memory of COM component is little, but Native Memory is high.
    Who used JavaCom and did you meet this problem?

    Hi,
    Well actually there is a difference. In Java 'Object' is an actual class which is the root for all other classes (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Object.html). While in ABAP 'type ref to object' only means it is a reference to a class instance. An actual root class like Object in Java does not exist.
    Only for exception classes there is  a root: CX_ROOT...
