What is an "optical drive" and what does it do?

My iMac is going back into the shop (an authorized Apple dealer) for the fourth time during the past six weeks.
This time, they feel a new optical drive will fix the problem.
A nightmare of problems...all starting when I took my perfectly working machine for a RAM upgrade from 256 MB to 2 GB, a routine procedure that would take no more than one hour to accomplish I was told. (The machine "is" capable of supporting 2 GB).
Now, six weeks later.......including the RAM upgrade, 2 new logic boards, some kind of cable for the CD drawer, who knows what else......a new optical drive.
During all of this, problems from their work have included "kernel panics," frozen screens, corrupted display, application programs refusing to open, or suddenly quitting, inability to burn CDs from iTunes, CD drawer refusing to open, inability to import tunes to iTunes, "sleep mode" refusing to wake up, and more than I can remember right now.
The fact is, I brought in a machine that never had a problem and they broke it. Right now my questions for them will be: Can all of this really fixed? And can "they" fix it.
So, before it goes back for the fourth time, any comments, thoughts, suggestions any of you might have would be greatly appreciated. Starting with: why a new optical drive?

It would seem that 2 GB of RAM is unsupported in your model. That may be what is causing the problem.
Apple's RAM specifications are based on the largest compatible RAM module available as of the time the computer was released. They are not updated when higher capacity modules become available, and should not be considered when determining what the actual maximum for an older Mac is; the actual limit is 1.5GB for a 17-inch 1GHz iMac G4, and 2.0GB for newer iMac G4s. Some machines have the maximum RAM limited in firmware.
It's more likely that one of the RAM modules may not be working properly, and it should be replaced with another one.

Replacement optical drives with HP part numbers can be found in Chapter 3, page 33.
You can also read the instructions in chapter 4 on removing the drive and getting the part number off of it which will be normally found on a white sticker. A 6 digit-3 digit part number (123456-001)
You can search by the part number on eBay for a used but working device or you can probably buy one new from HP by entering the part number at the link below.

just me again!
I read over this forum the last few days, and got my email/facebook/msn question fixed via going back to the telstra shop and getting a BIS pack for $10/m along with my 1GB data included in my cap plan.
So all emails working well ...
My next question is ... what is the BIS pack, and what does it allow me to do/use? it was 530pm when the sales lady got to me, so she whipped it up on the computer, and sent me packing saying it will all be good in 20 mins .... no real detail except "unlimited email" ... but im sure the other sales person when I bought my phone said "apps, msn, facebook and stuff" were covered by the BIS plan.
So please help me!!!
I have WiFi at home, and can connect to it, but now I dont know when Im using it, or the data pack, or the BIS haha its driving me (and my husband) nuts!

FYI -- "here", as in these forums (which are targeted at BB/RIM services rather than carrier services), would not be the best place to find out something specific for one carrier. With so many thousands of carriers with dozens of different plans each, it's pretty much impossible to keep track of the specifics. The generic information is this:

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
