What is an unix executable file that appeared in my folder?

HI,
In my folders structure I have a folder named "jobs: where I put my working files etc.
Yesterday inside the "jobs" folder I found a file with the same name "jobs" , its icon is dark gray and it is a "unix executable file" with zero bytes...
How was it created there?
I think I did a permission repair this week, but this is the first time I see a Unix exec file ...

** folder named "jobs:" **
When I tried to create a folder with that name, the Finder told me that the name was not valid. A colon in a Mac file or folder name used to be a bad idea. I guess it still is. I'd rename that folder to exclude the colon.

  • Can delete any "Unix Executable File"?

I just noticed there are a couple (each 4K) Unix Executable Files in my Application Support folder...is it ok to delete these? (I don't know where they came from, and aren't they PC files by definition?-->maybe came as some kind of email attachment) Thanks
P.S. Their names are 1019967 and 2826981, neither gives any useful information in the Info box.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.8 GHz, 768MB RAM, DSL

I cannot tell you what these are, but it is unlikely that email attachments would end up in Application Support. It is more likely that they are related to an application, perhaps license files that were intended to be invisible. Unix executable files are very common on your Mac because it is a Unix system, although the Finder's identification of these as Unix executables may be in error.
If you really want to get rid of them, just move them to a new folder called, perhaps, Unused Junk to Trash. Then, if nothing bad happens, you could delete them in the future.

  • Old Quark files are now Unix Executable Files

I made hundreds of archive CD's with Mac's running OS 9 back in 1990's. They contain Quark files and .tif's. I've referred back to these CD's many many times over the years with no problems. My new iMac has the intel processor. I pop an archive CD in and all the files (with no extensions like "tif" or ".qkd" or ".eps") are now "Unix Executable Files" that won't open.
I simply add an extension to the images files (like ".tif") and they work. HOWEVER, it's not so easy with the Quark files. I add ".qkd" to the file name and it still remains a Unix file.
I launch Quark and try to open the file through the finder and it doesn't work. I took an archive CD to a friends house whose on a G5 and the CD worked properly with no extensions needed to be added.
So I figure the problem is with the Intel/PC based processor. I shouldn't have sold my old G5.
One forum claimed that a program called "File Buddy" did the trick for him. Does anyone have any other ideas other than me buying a non-Intel Mac.
I love our new iMacs but I need these archive CD's to work!
    Thanks

I automatically run OnyX once a week for maintenance, but it didn't help this situation.
Those chores won't reset the LaunchServices database. Go to the Maintenance heading and click on the Reset tab. Turn on the check box for "LaunchServices database" (all other check boxes off). Click the Reset radio button and then Execute. Restart your Mac.
OS X will automatically rebuild the database according to the applications on your hard drive, giving preference to Apple applications as they would be when you first install OS X. So if you have the Acrobat Reader set up to open PDF files, you'll have to do that again as they will be set back to Preview.
Actually it's .qxd not .qkd for Quark XPress file extensions.
That's it! I knew .qkd was wrong, but Quark 6.x won't show you the old extensions when you save a file, and I couldn't remember it (been using InDesign steadily for a while now).

  • How open old Appleworks documents that appear as UNIX executable files?

A few of my old Appleworks or Clarisworks files won't open with Appleworks 6, but show up as a "UNIX executable file." I have tried adding the ".cwk" extension, repairing permissions using Disk Utility, and using Finder>File>Get info>Open to choose Apleworks 6 (it already was selected) as recommended by Peggy. With ".cwk" extension, I then get "that file appears to be damaged and cannot be opened."
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Cloyd G,
welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
The 'UNIX executable file' classification error appears to arise mostly from the lack of a suffix (.cwk) on the original file. If adding the .cwk suffix does not make the file readable by AppleWorks, and gives a 'file appears to be damaged' message, then it's likely that the file has indeed been damaged.
If it's a word processor file, you could try opening it in a Text editor (such as Text Edit, supplied with OS X, or Text Wrangler, available free from Bare Bones Software). You'll get a large amount of junk (file meta data and formatting codes, etc.) with the text of your document somewhere in the middle. If you know a single word that is in (or is likely to be in) the document, a search using command-F should take you directly there. Copy the text and paste it into a new AW document.
For spreadsheet files, you can try dragging the file and dropping it onto a new, empty spreadsheet document. The same technique may also work for database files. I've never tried or seen recommended the same texchnique for Draw or Paint files, but attemptng it should do no harm.
    Best of luck with this.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • What to do with "Unix Executable Files"?

What do I do with Unix Executable Files? I've tried navigating to them in Terminal and typing in the file name but that doesn't work. How do I execute them?
I'm trying to install some web development framework software, and it appears that the command names start with the file I'm referring to but when I'm in the directory containing the Unix Executable File and type in the file name followed by a command it doesn't work. I get "command not found"

    Hi warpdesign,
In old-style shell environments, all files in the current working directory were defined to be in your PATH, where the shell looks for executables. That was before Trojan Horses. Now you have to specify the current working directory in the command line. Fortunately there is a nice "shorthand" for that. If foo.sh is an executable in the current working directory then it can be invoked this way:
    ./foo.sh

  • After Mavericks upgrade fonts on server appear as Unix executable files

    Hello:
I upgraded two machines to Mavericks. An iMac and a Macmini both were running 10.8.  We store files and fonts on a Windows server.  Before the upgrade the fonts appeared as aspected on the server in the Finder, after the Mavericks upgrade they appeared as Unix executable files ( Only on the iMac ) the fonts display correctly on the MacMini. Both machines mount the server the same way and the fonts do work correctly if downloaded to the local machine.
Anyone have an idea why they would appear correctly on one machine and not the other.
    appreciate any input.
    thanks,

Kurt is very likely right, but we need more info to try to fix it.
    Server details?
What version of Mac OS X can view the fonts?
    What protocol do they use?
    What protocol do you use?
If they connect to the server with a different protocol from you (eg, AFP vs SMB), try switching to the same protocol. That may very well not solve the problem, but it's the first step.

  • What do I do with unix executable files??

    Hi guys,
I recently filmed a short movie with my friend. I used a Panasonic camera to film with a tdk sd card. I tried to open the video files on the sd card, but the mac can't open the files. The file extension reads as a unix executable file.
How can I open these files????

  • Word documents appear as "unix executable files" and cannot be opened

Hi: I am running 10.5.5 on my Intel Imac. The problem is that many old MS Word documents have suddenly flipped into documents with no file extension, but which are identified in the Preview window as "unix executable files."
I've had this happen before, and all I had to do was add the .doc extension for them to become Word documents again. This time there is nothing I can do to change them over. I have tried opening them from Word, from Pages, from Text Edit, with no results. (I have also used all the possibilities available from Word as well).
There doesn't seem to be any pattern -- random documents in the same folder, created at the same time and modified at the same time, appear as unix files, while the others seem fine. Any ideas?

This is the iWeb forum. You should post your question in the Leopard forum. But I'll give a try at a possible solution:
1 - check the Finder preferences and make sure you have the option to show file extensions checked.
2 - select one of the Work files, type Command+i and in the Info window go to the Open With menu and select Word as the default application. Then click on the Apply to All... button.

  • Final Cut Pro Unix Executable file???  what do i do?

    Hey All,
So I wanted to dig up an old movie i edited in 2003 so i took out the old IMac. I found the Final Cut Pro 2 sequence on there but because all the footage (capture scratch, etc.) is saved to an external hard drive i need to reconnect the material to the sequence. i hooked up my WD My Book drive to my G5 to find the clips and sure enough i backed them up on this hard drive (37 gb worth) awhile ago but for some reason all the clips say they're Unix Executable Files? Why did this happen when i backed them up instead of them staying as Quicktime files?
    So here are my questions...
Tonight when i go home I want to be able to open up the FCP sequence on Final Cut Pro Studio 2 (fcp7)...will this be possible to open up an FCP 2 sequence that many versions later?
Also, please tell me why the quicktime clips did this? When i do File-->Get Info-->change open with Terminal to Quicktime they play but how will i get them to reconnect to FCP?? Do i need to go one by one and add .mov extension??
I'm very confused...i would rather not have to do the editing on the 2003 machine..i'd like to get it to work on my newest computer (27inch imac).
Can i attach a newer external that the clips are on to the old mac?
    Thank you,
    Jenna

..will this be possible to open up an FCP 2 sequence that many versions later?
    Yes.
Do i need to go one by one and add .mov extension??
Use my [Automator Action|https://files.me.com/nikholmes/0ge9cr] which will rename them for you -Just choose the correct folder in the "Start At" section. Link is a direct download from my iDisk.
Can i attach a newer external that the clips are on to the old mac?
    Of course.

  • Recovered files now UNIX Executable Files???

After my previous external hard drive failed I had the data recovered and placed onto a new external drive. After looking at the files I have found that a number of them have become "unix executable files." I don't know what this is or how to fix it. It seems to have only happened to things such as saved emails, but there are some photos from my digital camera that have converted to this as well.
While looking into the problem I found that the company that recovered the data placed it all onto an external hard drive that is an MS-DOS File System (FAT32) format instead of a Mac OS format. Could this be the problem since all of my files were Mac files, and the hard drive they were recovered from was formatted to Mac OS?
If this is the case, is it something I can fix myself without loosing anything, or should I take it back to the place that recovered the data?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes the file naming probably was messed about with when they copied stuff over to FAT32. The files are probably there. However, the just need the correct file suffix to associate with the correct programs. A good way to test the files without hurting them is to view them in the Terminal with the program called More. Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal and you will be greeted by a prompt. At the prompt type the word
    more
followed by a space (do NOT hit enter)
and drag the file into the terminal following the word "more" and then when the path appears, hit enter. If there is intelligible text, the file is probably an e-mail. If there is no intelligible text, it probably is an image, or a system file. Preview can open the files which are images and save them to specific formats. Depending on the number of files you had rescued, it might be better to ask them to rescue it again, but to a properly formatted volume. You can try yourself if you still have the old disk with Prosoft Data Rescue.
In anycase, this is a very good lesson to always backup your data in the future as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    Good luck!

  • Unix Executable Files Problem

My husband moved from PC to Mac and had the Apple Store transfer his libraries to it - including picture files. Every time he opens iPhoto he is told that there are 14 files not yet imported. However, they can't be imported and on inspection turn out to be Unix Executable Files. Each time he does this another Recovered File folder appears in his picture folder on the HD.
I've tried to find out what the files are - but, of course, can't open them. I suspect that they maybe Clip Art from his PC version of Microsoft Office. They can't be deleted. If I put a Recovered File folder in Trash and Empty Trash, it just turns up in the Picture Folder again!
While not a disaster, it's very irritating. Is there anything he can do?

Quit iPhoto and right click (control click) on your iPhoto library (by default in the pictures folder) and select the show package contents command - find the folder names import (or importing) and drag it to the desktop, close the iPhoto library and launch iPhoto - you will be fine
Open the import(ing) folder on the desktop and see if there is anything you want to save in it - if there is import them to iPhoto and then trash the import(ing) folder

  • CDF type to Unix Executable File

When downloading a Comma Delimited File Database, Safari saves the download as a "Unix Executable File" and my database (Filemaker) will not recognize the file type. What is the problem (or solution)? Thanks in advance

There is no extension. What appears is the file name with an unusual (for Mac) icon. This was not the solution, but thank you. I have subsequently tried the download on two other machines with the same result. The question remains why does Safari (or Mac OSX) change a comma delimited file to an Unix executable file. I did discover that by opening the file in textedit and saving it, Filemaker will then work the file. That is only a workaround, not a solution.

  • Tugsten E2 /unix executable file

My laptop is a MAC power book G/O.S.10.4.11.
My external hard drive crashed. I recovered the info. The back up i had from last version of my desktop palm shows only the file mame i gave it -NON RECOGNIZABLE ICON. I'm not able to open it, when i drag the file into the palmdesktop icon it doesnt read it. On the File info says:
    KIND:unix executable file
I opened the file on microsoft word-officce 2004 and just appear like programming caracters.
I think I just need to add the file extesion in order the palmdesktop software read the file.
Do you know what the extension is?, or How to make readable opening it with the palm desktop sofware?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Hey!, I've re-installed palm desktop program and it didn't read the file.
In Mac, when a file is not readable, show's you a blank icon or in this case is showing a grey icon with green letters saying EXEC. That's why I think what I need is to add the correct extension to the file in order to be recognized by palm desktop folder.
    I'll  appreciate your help.
    Thank you.

  • Unix executable File _VUC69~7 in OSX10.4.11

A unix executable file named "_VUC69~7" has appeared in the finder on the top level of my main hard drive.
Curious - any ideas what it is, why it's appeared & whether I can or should make it disappear?
    Many thanks in advance, P.

Many thanks, I had found these links but not sure they are relevant to my situation -- just a powermac & a wireless internet connection.
I wasn't aware that I was using Samba, would it run without my knowledge?
Also have never knowingly set up a Linux file server -- are these all things that happen "under the hood" that an average user doesn't realise are going on?
The file was created last March but I can't think what I did around this time that would have created it.
