What is an upgrade

Depends.  You might be referring to an iCloud storage upgrade, which gives you more storage in your iCloud account: iCloud storage upgrades and downgrades.

  • HT1338 I am running MAC OS X 10.5.8. What do I upgrade to and how?

I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8. what should I upgrade to amd how?

If you're using a PowerPC iMac, nothing.
If you're using an Intel iMac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store; this is needed to get 10.6.8, 10.7.5, or 10.8.2.

  • What can be upgraded in Compaq nx9420?

I read the official manuals and searched here, got nowhere. I know you can upgrade the RAM to 4 GB but what else is upgradable in a Compaq nx9420? I'm willing to beef up just about everything: CPU, Motherboard, Vid Card. I read the motherboard has an MXM slot and that some managed to install a Mobility Radeon 3870 video card (with a BIOS master upgrade). I also know the model supports CPUs to at least 2.3 GHz (mine is 2.0 GHz).
    Here are my specs...
    Model: HP Compaq nx9420
    Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard (ES439EA#ABB)
Motherboard Chipset: Mobile Intel Calistoga-PM i945PM
CPU: Mobile Intel Core Duo Centrino 2.0 GHz
    RAM: Samsung M4 70T2953CZ3-CE6 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256 MB)
    BIOS Version: 68YAF Ver. F.1D
Also, would a local HP service center help me out with any upgrades?

I too have an nx9420 that I have just upgraded.
    1) The 9420 has a known video card overheating problem. This was solved by a change in the video card for the 9440 model. The problem is also solved for about Cn$60 by replacing the video card heat sink when the card starts overheating.
    2) Mine would not accept an upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit. It will only run 32 bit. That restricts the max memory it can address to 3GB. I run 2x2GB sticks in mine, just to keep the two sides balanced. 3) In its defaulty state, the hard drive is formatted with FAT32, and as such is limited to 120GB. So even if you install a larger drive, you will only be able to see 120GB. However if you use the Windows 7 utility you can reformat the drive to NTFS on the fly and get the full advantage of the capacity. I upgraded mine to 250GB.
    4) The limitation on the drive seems to be in the hardware. Mine is SATA1. So one can put a SATA3 drive in, but it will never be faster than a SATA 1, so I saved myself $$ and went with a 5400rpm unit which also uses less power.
Having said that, my 9420 is blazingly fast with these mods, even with the slower Centrino processor.
Hope this helps. If it does, I love Kudos!
    Cheers

  • Have an IMac 7.1, desktop system 10.4.11, 2.8 GHz, 4MB, 4GB.  what can I upgrade to?  What do I need to buy and how high can I go?

Have an IMac 7.1, desktop system 10.4.11, 2.8 GHz, 4MB, 4GB.  what can I upgrade to?  What do I need to buy and how high can I go?

You can replace one of the 2 GB RAM sticks with a 4 GB stick for a total max. RAM of 6 GBs.
    Here are the specs.
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online vendors Crucial or OWC (Other World Computing).
The highest OS X version you can go is OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
First, though, you need to purchase a retail disc version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to download upgrade to OS X 10.8.
Purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Use Software update, in OS X Preferences Pane to update to the latest version of OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard before upgrading OS to 10.8 Mountain Lion.
OS X 10,6.8 will install the Mac App Store icon in OS X's Application Dock.
From there, you can launch the Mac App Store and download and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Use Sofware Update again to update to the latest version of Mountain Lion.
Be advised, you may want to play around in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard before updating to OS X 10.8 Mt. Lion.
Some users aren't happy with the Hybrid OS X/iOS functionality of OS X 10.8 Mounatin Lion.
If you upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and aren't happy with it, the only way to return to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is wipe the internal drive, reformat it, then reinstall OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
You might want to consider purchasing an external FireWire hard drive, format it so you can install OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard and all of its updates onto the internal drive, use a copying/cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make a duplicate of your internal drive to the external FireWire drive as a backup that you can reinstall onto your internal drive just in case you find you are not happy with the look and functionality of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    Good Luck!

  • IMac. Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.3.1. Since I installed Yosemite, cannot insert a pdf document into a pdf document. What's my upgrade?

I have an iMac with Yosemite. I have Adobe Acrobat Pro van 8.3.1.
I am unable to insert a pdf document into a  pdf document. I go to Document/Insert in the menu bar, get a spinning ball, can do nothing with the app except force-quit.
What's my upgrade? I cannot find one. Do I have to pay full price for a version that will work?

Your version of Acrobat is quite old and not compatible with any current OS, so problems are to be expected. It is too old to qualify for an upgrade as well, so if you want the current version (XI) then you need to purchase a new license, which you can do via the Adobe Products Page.

  • What is the upgrade from CS3 and 3.5? do I want it?

Dear Community. I needed to reinstall CS3. The Software Disks got ejected from my iMac I thought the Software was defective. I went searching for a replacement.
I found the Version CS3.5 upgrade so I bought it for $221.00 or so. Then it dawned on me that the  optical reader in my iMac might be at fault. I then bought an external disk reader. The Adobe Software is perfect at CS. What would this upgrade 3.5 do for me? I could return it.

Just to let you know. I confconfused myself. When I attempted to reinstall
my CS3 Standard Design, the disks spit out of my iMac. I thought the
software was corrupted or something. I went online and found this CS3.5
upgrade. I snapped it up. I guess from a Bookseller on Amazon. Then I began
to wonder if the optical disk was malfunctioning. So I purchased an
external usb reader. The Design Standard immediately installed. Here's my
replacement software. The Surprise is that it is the Design Premium
Application. Why would I return it I"m having a Ball so much power. Do I
really need it no, but I reallty want it nowI regretto have brought my
confusion onto others, One Happy Ending. Thanks, Leigh

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

  • What can be upgraded?

hello i have an iMac 27inch mid 2010 model,
i was wondering what can i upgrade on my mac.
can i only upgrade the ram?
what is the highest ram i can put in?
can you upgrade the intel icore or the graphics card?
what is the best company for the stuff?
i only like safe and easy things, i don't want to be spending more than £100 but please suggest every thing that I can upgrade and the highest I can upgrade it to.

i only like safe and easy things,
Then all you should try upgrading is RAM. It is the only part of a 2010 iMac that Apple designed as user-serviceable.
Upgrading RAM is quite easy. Last month my 12-year old grandson--who had never serviced a computer before--successfully upgraded the RAM in his Grandmother's iMac with a minimum of assistance from Grandfather (me).
Nice instructional videos on RAM replacement here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_mid_2010_mem/
Any other service requires special tools for the removal of the display cover and deal with a lot of "fiddly bits."
You have four RAM slots. If nothing has yet been upgraded, you have two slots filled, usually with two 2GB modules. You can leave these in place and add RAM to the two empty slots. My 2010 iMac shipped with 4GB RAM---two 2GB modules. Later I added two 4GB modules and now have a total of 12GB. You want to arrange the modules so that those of the same size sit side-by-side. Here are how my iMac RAM configuration looks today showing the side-by-side arrangement:
Your location will affect RAM prices. If you are in the US, US$100 (about 60 pounds) will buy you two 4GB modules.

  • What is an upgrade distribution system?

In Apple discussion document 2465 [  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465  ] I found this question and answer:
Q: Are there any pitfalls to watch out for?
A: With all upgrades, backing up your data at least twice has been a given.  Hardware can fail independently of downloads and upgrades, though may happen simultaneously.  Software may be found to be incompatible that has not been tested with the new upgrade, or combination of other software that might be installed with the upgrade.  It is also strongly recommended once your backup is complete, to shut down your computer, remove all but Apple wired keyboard and mouse (notebooks remove all input devices).  Then once done, reboot, and go directly to the upgrade distribution system available.
Third party system tools, modification, and "maintenance" applications should be verified as compatible, or removed until known to be compatible.  Check with developers how to remove if it is essential to use Lion before those applications become compatible.  Most "maintenance" tools that deal with system cache, prebinding, are not really maintenance tools.  Ask on forum when are the appropriate times to use them before assuming they should be used for upgrades or otherwise.
What is an upgrade distribution system?
    Thanks.

Well, if you happen to have several computers that run the same versions of software
and have similar need to upgrade them, essentially offline to not duplicate the costs of
bandwidth activity (and thus perhaps lose access due to overage fee or penalty) the
idea to download copies in a more traditional sense may be more difficult than with the
previous versions of OS X. With up to three Macs at similar OS X version build series,
it made sense to save all of the download compressed document or application files to
share with the other computers, to install & update them offline. And fully restore them
should the need arise, with complete copies of upgrade & updates, saved offline.
Now these require an Apple ID and other steps, the path isn't quite as clear. There may
be a path but it isn't as simple as copying a .zip file to a USB flash drive, and plug that
drive into another Mac, and drag the file to its desktop in Finder. It may be that simple
if you were to get the download without the baggage of ownership tags it may imply.
This is an area I haven't gotten into much, with only one Mac tied to an Apple ID.
The latest OS X is Mavericks 10.9.5, it is OK. I don't push it much with only 4GB RAM.
And the other computers mostly run Leopard 10.5.8. One Tiger 10.4.11. Another that
is seldom turned on, Mac OS8.6 (PowerMac 7600.) None are networked by server.
You could say I kinda made a mistake and kept a new old-stock Mini quad core server
that was ordered in December, so here it is. Although it asks on occasion for me to get
the AppleCare Plan, and extra RAM (it can use 16GB) it has two 1-TB HDDs. Sadly
both are only 5400-RPM rotational, not 7200-RPM; to supplement data transfer time.
Anyway, if you get a fair deal on a refurbished or new-old-stock i7 Mini quad core, it
may be a server model with dual hard drives. You could upgrade them & the RAM too.
And choose to not use the Server. With less RAM, now discontinued model runs OK
with the as-shipped Mavericks. Older stock was said to have Mountain Lion. Better yet
in situation where RAM and system resources are less. Yosemite likes even more...
Well, have fun with it, if possible...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What Exactly is upgradable in a iMac 7,1

I was wondering What can be upgraded?
    I know The ram
And ive seen a few videos on hard drive upgrades
Not to sure on the ram speed.
And can i just pick out any hard drive or does it have to meet some requirements?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8. and I'm unsure about upgrading, but feel the need to. What should I upgrade to, for now? THANK YOU!

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

There is no traditional upgrade from CS6 to what would normally be "CS7".
The next version after CS6 is Photoshop CC and it's only available by subscription to the Creative Cloud.
