What is Arch's timeline for GTK3?

I'm using testing (with an XFCE desktop) and noticed that the (Gnome) network manager is now using GTK3.  Which piques my curiosity about whether other apps will now be compiled with GTK3 or will still be compiled with GTK2.  I suppose many apps will only work with one or the other, but what is the policy going to be for those that work with either (e.g. Audacious)?

Depends on the dev/TU in charge of the software. Once gtk3 gets out of [testing] I'm pretty sure those apps which support it WILL be moved over. Some users may have issue with that (theming for example is kinda sparse for gtk3 still), in that case an AUR version of the package with gtk2 instead of gtk3 is the answer.

  • HT2613 I'm currently in the restore process, and it seems to take forever. The indicator on my Mac shows a crosshatched bar, but says nothing about % completed. What is a rough timeline for this process?

I'm currently restoring an IPod classic ... 160 GB, which is 5th generation, I believe.
It seems to be taking forever. What is the rough length of time for this process?

Restore a 160GB iPod Classic, should not take more than an hour, if your iPod Hardsik is healthy, and you connect to the USB2.0 port and not to the keyboard USB port. If you are using a Macbook, then only one of the USB port is fast enough for the slow iPod Classic.
However, if you are connecting to the correct USB port, and still having problems Restoring or Syncing, do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, refer to this outstanding post by tt2.
It wont fix your problem, but save a lot of frustration, in troubleshooting.
    Have a nice day!

  • What's the bottom timeline for?

I'm doing mass edits on several videos
I duplicate existing clips and replace videos
I also speed up the video clips
There is a bottom line below the main timeline
What is this? Should the lenght of this match my video?
What if it's too short? Or too long?
    Thanks
    Omar

    Yep. Uh huh.
Q "connects" clips so they appear on the SECONDARY story line. (They're actually "connected" to the PRIMARY story line.)
D "overwrites" clips to the PRIMARY story line.
You can transition from the scondary story line to a clip below in on the primary story line, by adding a transition.
    Having said that..
Provided BOTH clips have a connection point to the primary story line, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to "drag" TWO clips to meet each other on the secondary story line.
Omar... Don't take this the wrong way, but... this is a BASIC function convered in a tutorial. Go at it! Have fun! Once you get past the anxiety of leanring this stuff you're good to go!

  • Arch ended search for distro, what ends the WM search?

Dusty wrote:I'm getting tired of WMI and am renewing my search for the perfect window manager once again. Every day I pray I will discover a window manager that will end this search in the same way that Arch ended my seach for the perfect Linux distribution.

The quote of Dusty is not something new but quite many users, I believe, do same shifting/searching for the perfect WM. This thread is NOT about comparing WMs and DEs but what do we want a WM to do? Can we use the same things what made Arch perfect also for a WM? Does it have to be a WM or can it instead be a PM (program manager)? What's an ideal whatever it would be?
    EDIT
Let's try not to mention any WM/DE names. Here we want to discuss ideas not what a particular WM does.

rasat: I think a search for a 'perfect' wm is futile.
Everyone has their own perception of what a 'perfect'
wm is. If we were to include everyone's idea of a perfect wm into one, it would be huge, which would conflict with some people's liking of lighter WMs.
Why do we think a perfect WM includes everyone's liking and preferences? That's not the Arch Way!
A perfect WM is a base what doesn't include everyone's liking but allows everyone to setup and configure how they want. That's why Arch Linux is perfect for many users.
no, but to have one that will setup and configure how everyone wants, it's going to need to include all of the capabilities of doing what everyone wants. pixmaps, and that'll add size, which the minimalists dont like. Sure we could modularise it, but once you start doing things like that, it makes the situation much more complex, how you would distribute the addons, and avoiding conflicts between those addons.
newbies will want a wm that will just work right off, which means that the wm would need to come with GUI confs etc, others would want one that doesnt have those, which means we'd have to distrobute them seperately, which means that the newbies wouldnt have them if they just installed it.
otherwise, you're just asking for fvwm, from what i've heard and seen, it can do practically anything, and can be configured to do nearly anything. and if it doesnt do it, you can make a plugin for it.

  • [Solved] What's the best way for me to help with Arch?

I've been using Linux for about 10 years and Arch for a little over a year.  I used to do a lot of distro-hopping but I've found that since finding Arch, I haven't been doing much of that.  I don't know why it took me so long to find it.
Anyway, I'd like to give back a little so what's the best way for me to help?  I'm not a programmer so I'd be no help there.  I have made a couple contributions to the wiki and filed a bug.  I know that kind of stuff is easy and obvious.  Is there anything else I could be doing?

I hear the Arch Linux Magazine could always use some contributions, if you're inclined towards that sort of thing. I've been wanting to write an article for a while, but I've not run into anything in my Arch experience so far that's really inspired an article out of me.

  • Source patching and track targeting, What is it mainly used for?

Im reading adobe premier pro cc in a classroom book, and I still dont understand what source track and target track mean, or atleast what they are mainly used for.
    Why do people use it?
In what work scenario is it mainly used in?

ShooterNZ is right as far as Source Patching. It's intended chiefly for controlling which track(s) a clip lands on when inserted via shortcut, although it also affects behavior when dragging content to the timelines.
Track targetting controls the Timeline's behavior for a variety of editing and selection actions. For example, the shortcut D selects one or more clips at the playhead. Try parking the playhead over two or more clips stacked in the Timeline, then target various combinations of tracks and see what happens when you press "D."

  • How to tell what recovery point was used for restore

Is there a way to determine what recovery point was used for a restore after the restore was started.

The question comes from the experience of having a package installed but not being able to build it from the same PKGBUILD (due to nontrivial issues). The package must have been built successfully by *a* build system, so ideally one would want to replicate that build. The relevant differences I could think of are the compiler flags and to a lesser extent the hardware build platform.
You should describe these supposedly non-trivial issues. I've never experienced what you describe in my years using Arch, nor have I ever heard it suggested that the famously vanilla Arch packages are built using some sort of unconventional compiler flags. I have heard multiple developers say using highly modified CPU optimizations and modified linking and such are mostly pointless, however. So I'd bet a week's pay that the build system uses vanilla GCC with the default settings. Why would the thing that actually builds Arch Linux be the one part of the Arch ecosystem that doesn't abide by the Arch standards? Why would only some packages have library linking problems and such when all packages are built on the same machine against the same library versions---and thus the conditions resulting in a failed build would be identical to those in a successful build? I could be wrong, but I think you're on the wrong track. The quickest way to find out is to describe what the real problem is, not what you imagine the solution to be.

  • What's in the works for 0.6?

This is more of a "I'm kinda curious..." thread, but I am just wondering what the developers have in mind for the 0.6 release? Or are the developers not really looking at 0.6 but just going to work on things until they feel ready for a 1.0 release? Aside from documentation (which is improving every day...great job on that!) and maybe some things on the installer (though I have never had an issue with it and think it's pretty good), what else really needs to be addressed?
Again, I'm not trying to criticize what's been done so far because this is the first distro that has stayed on my box for longer than 3 months (I'm nearing 1 year with Arch now) and I really love it...but I can't help but wonder what's being worked on now?

We both join Arch Linux at the same time (one day difference) and have same "curious" mind . Also Arch Linux has stayed on my machine since then. Did you read topic " What will Arch Linux 1.0 become?" posted jan 27,  2003?

  • What makes Arch stand out?

I have heard people talk about Arch a lot, but have never been able to figure out what makes it different from other distros.  I am interested in trying it out but I would like to learn a bit more about it first.  People talk a lot about how great the Pacman package manager is, but I haven't been able to figure out what is really unique about Pacman based on the things I have read about it?  What are the similarities and differences that make it stand out from other package managers?
I have been using Ubuntu for quite some time but I would like to find something I like a bit better.  I have used Gentoo for a little while and I like it, but compiling everything from source is time consuming.  I would really like something that gives the user a similar level of control but without having to compile everything.  I generally find myself using default options for compiling anyway, so I don't feel like it's really worth it.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that I want to use something that's more for advanced users than Ubuntu is, but doesn't require you to wait for packages to compile every time you want to make a change to the system.  Am I right to think that Arch may be what I'm looking for?  Does anyone have any opinions on what makes Arch really stand out aside from Pacman?

bananaoomarang wrote:PAcman is brilliant because it's light and featurefull and manages my system perfect;y.
No it isn't. Try replacing openjdk with sun's jre. Pacman can't do that when something is installed that depends on java-environment even when both packages provide it.
In fact I consider pacman to be the only thing that really needs improvement:
The "database" is the filesystem which makes the first reading of the database extremely slow until it is in cache.
Pacman really has problems with handling dependencies of dependencies, the user often has to do it himself instead of pacman offering some sane options.
Other than that Pacman is great: It is fast when the database is in ram and it's not bloated like the package manager on other Distributions (rpm on fedora *caugh*).
What makes Arch stand out is the extremely good Rolling Release: I used ubuntu before and you maybe know about the time when there was this discussion about open office 3 and firefox 3 not going into the release version... With time it were simply too much applications that were hold back. You may also remember the brasero 0-byte-free bug, where many people could not burn with brasero for 6 months because Ubuntu refused to put the fixed version in the repos.
Another thing is the init system. I never quite understood all these /etc/rc.* things and how they are configured correctly. There are some hacks like the rcconf program, but nothing compares to the simplicity and sanity of rc.conf + /etc/rc.d/
Anything that comes from the Archlinux project is simple and fun to use. Try building a sane package for debian - that's the opposite of fun.
Try building a package for Archlinux: Write a pkgbuild and it just works.

  • Pause timeline for specified time

I need to make an interactive presentation I've made earlier into an autorunning presentation.
I figured I could just throw out the buttons that advance the animation and swap the sym.stop(); functions for something that just pauses the timeline for a given amount of miliseconds, but I can't for the life of me figure out what this function would be. I'm no programmer, so please: babysteps
    Thanks...

I've just used this code with a slight variation by adding a trigger at the point that I want the animation to stop.  Is is useful because you won't always want your animation to stop on the timeline at a convenient rounded number and you can simply add the sym.stop at the exact point you want, without having to reference a precise time measurement.  All credit to sudeshna sarkar though for the original code.
       sym.stop();
    setTimeout(function() {
       sym.play();
    }, 4000);

  • Compression: what's right frame size for anamorphic film using H.264 Lan?

i have an anamorphic (16:9) 25 minute film i want to export using Compression's H.264 Lan option (for web-posting purposes). What settings do I need for the frame size to keep it at its original proportions? i thought that 720 x 405 would do the trick, but it is slightly off, makes some of the images rather oval.
    thanks much....

    x & patrick,
thanks for your help & desire for further clarification.
i am dealing with a sequence composed largely of footage from a panasonic pv-gs500 using the widescreen mode. i don't know if it's "true" anamorphic or 16:9, but it's on an anamorphic timeline and looks just fine there.
i experimented all nite last nite trying to get the right ratio for the compression type i mentioned. it looks like i finally succeeded using 740 x 416. i have no idea WHY this works, but when viewing the final exported product, it looks pretty perfect. i think it cuts off a teeny tiny bit of the height, not even noticeable.
any explanation of WHY this ratio works would be welcome, to help along my understanding....

  • Arch VPS (looking for a comparable plan/host) JaguarPC Business

I have used JaguarPC in the past and love it's packages, it irks me that they don't have a handful of distro's like other hosts but offer a lot of bandwidth space.
This is what I was going to order but I rather stick to the OS I know, and a tip for people thinking about using arch use ABS for packages and always, always, always ask questions before updating or keep an eye on the wiki/abs to make sure it's stable.
This is JaguarPCs Business VPS plain, I'm looking for a comparable plan with a host that offers Arch or even Gentoo Linux.  I don't hate debian, I do not like CentOS and RPMs, arch is a cleaner OS imo.
    100 GB Disk Space
        5,000 GB Bandwidth
        2048 MB RAM
        4096 MB Burst RAM
        Equal CPU (2 core min.)
The price is $50/mo and I'd like to stick around that price if possible but I can go higher if needed, just don't want to pay more just cause of a different OS.

Where are you located? FanaticalVPS is what a friend and I use, but it is located in Germany. Sometimes the lag is higher than you might want but for the most part it is fine. I made a post in this thread about some of the other downsides. And some of the upsides Make sure you look into the uptime thing though, it may be unacceptable to you.
You'd need a Huge for $30/month and a $10-$20/month RAM upgrade to get the specs you want. I don't know about the CPU stuff, you'd have to talk to support or look at their page. Bandwidth is "fair-usage unlimited." If you're paying that much I'm sure you'd get 5TB out of it, but best ask to be sure. I pay for a Mini and fair usage for that is like 1.5TB. They support Arch of course.
Edit: Forgot to mention! There's a wiki page about VPS's that support Arch.

  • What is Arch Linux?

The below link is a wiki page trying to describe what is Arch Linux. There is no official written document,  most likely will never happen keeping Arch open for future possibilities. It is a collection of quotes from Arch Linux Forum and other user discussions commonly said by the "old timers". Currently there are three ongoing documents:
    <b>What is Arch Linux</b> - general introduction.
<b>The Arch Way</b> - priciples & philosophy, user comments, and pros & cons.
<b>Crux vs. Arch</b> - difference between Crux Linux and Arch Linux.
    Wiki page:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ArchLinux

you dont even need a proper desktop environment, thats part of the reason i like arch so much, you can use ~/.xinitrc as your own personal desktop environment.
just put what you want in your ~/.xinitrc
    this is mine
    xbindkeys &
    lxde-settings-daemon &
    xfdesktop &
    xfwm4 &
    xfce4-panel &
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
i have the minimal lxde install (just lxde-common, lxde-settings-daemon & lxsession-lite + lxapperance for my themes) so all my settings like themes  etc... are loaded on boot then i just added the panel i wanted, the window manager i wanted etc...
if you want a fast minimal install with only the apps you want then do something similar, load somekind of settings manager so all your settings are loaded every time you boot then pick and choose you favorite panel, window manager etc...
