What is Automator? Anything useful on it, like a word processing program?

What is Automator? My brain solidifies trying to understand the instructions, and I still can't figure out what they're saying. Is there a word processor on this, as TextEdit is such a profound disappointment. Thanks for any advise.

Mac 101: Automator  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2488    My apologies if this is what you already read. It does not have functons of a word processing program.  it allows you to program repetitive tasks.

For free you can download NeoOffice
Not quite. Downloading the current version of NeoOffice is definitely not free (downloading the previous version is). The developers of NeoOffice (the most Mac-like of the StarOffice descendants) make a distinction between the application itself (which is free) and downloading it, for which they require what they are pleased to call a "donation" (since it's mandatory, I would call it a fee).

Indeed. For basic WP tasks, TextEdit can be quite satisfactory.

I only need it for reports
Would that include the report on the state of the US economy -- you know, the one President Obama asked you to deliver to the White House no later than 7AM on January 4? The one in two columns, with numbered paragraphs, table of contents, footnotes, mathematical formulae, 40 figures, 60 charts, quotations in Arabic, Japanese, and classical Greek, and 15 pages of references in APA style?
Grant Bennet-Alder is right -- "the real answer depends on what work you expect to do with it, and with whom you expect to do this work". There are dozens of word processors for Mac, from the venerable Word to the no less venerable Tex-Edit+. It would pointless to start listing them all, when many of them might be either too little or too much for your needs.

What is the best word processing program for Mac?

That's an impossible question to answer - what type of writing will you be doing?
Before we can point you in a direction you need to tell us what kind of writing you will be doing. As phrased, the question is a bit like "what's the best car?" Well few would doubt that a Ferrari is superior to a Honda minivan, but the Ferrari will not much use if you're dragging 4 kids, two dogs and the grandparents along.
    Academic?
Word is the nearest thing to a standard format in the Humanties, but in the sciences and math you'll find Tex more useful for laying out formulas. The older Pages is quite good as a substitute for Word in many cases in the Humanties, but you'll have big problems with citations in the newer version. Apps like Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel are more powerful than Pages, but each have shortcomings. Scrivener and Ulysses are excellent drafting tools but you'll need a Word Processor for final layout. There are lots and lots of lightweight editors out there - Byword, iaWriter (and Writer Pro), OmmWriter - that have little functional use in Academic settings - poor or no support for citations for instance, or poor or no interoperability with Word - but which might be excellent for other uses.
So, back to the key question: what kind of writing will you be doing?

What is the best word processing program for ipad2?

I would recommend using Pages for what you are doing. It is the best one to use on the iPad itself, and has the ability to convert to an MS Word format. I know that it can do this through email, but I am also fairly certain you can import it in this format through iTunes, though you may need to convert it on the iPad itself.
With iOS 5 and iCloud, I recommend kicking Word to the curb altogether and going with Pages on both machines. Not only will everything be more seamless, but iCloud will update the changes you make, on either device, automatically. And Pages is only 20 bucks through the App store for the Mac (OS 10.6.7 or later needed).

  • I know it is stupid but what is the word processing program on the ibook software?

I know it is stupid, but what is the word processing program installed on the ibook g4?

Hi, Wayne. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Is AppleWorks installed? It's what I use, and came on many iBook models.
TextEdit Is a rudimentary word processor, and is included with Mac OS X.

  • Pages 4.3 was a useful technical word processing program; Pages 5 is not. Does anyone know if Apple intends to improve Pages 5, at least to the level of Pages 4.3?

Pages 4.3 was a useful technical word processing program; Pages 5 is not. Does anone know is Apple intends to improve Pages 5 at least to the level of Pages 4.3?

We used 4.3 as an effective tool for thesis production but in many ways it has become kind of a simplistic joke. Sad indeed and I wish there was some evidence they were remotely concerned. PeterBreis0807's response of "No" is spot on. We will continue to use 4.3 as long as it works as a time-saving substitute for Word.

  • What word processing program should I purchase for iMac

What word processing program should I purchase for iMac

    Hi
Pages is very good as a Word Processor but it lacks the ability to do Macros if you continually do a repeat operation.  For me I cut and paste text from another source and it needs reformatting Font; bold, size, colour every time I do it.  It is a real pest.
Many years ago Word Perfect Mac could do this [still the best wordprocessor interface] also [from memory] Apple Works had the ability to record macros.
A current MAC wordprocessor to look at which will do pretty much everything INCLUDING MACROS is Nisus Writer.  Express version is $49, Pro version $79 and it has a free 15 day demo.
    Cheers

  • What commands can I use in iChat, like "/me"?

What special commands can I use in iChat?
I know about the command /me
And I know there's a command to roll dice
What are the other commands, or what command will get me a list of commands?

    Hi,
    I know about slashme ( /me )
For those that don't know it is something you can type in a Text Chat and it wil appear in the middle of a Text chat at the same point Timing and the Joining/Leaving messages.
/me waves will appear as "Ralph Johns waves".
The name that appears for you and your Buddies doing this depends on how you store your name in the Address Book (Real name in iChat) and those of your Buddies. If you only know/store their Screen Name That is what appears.
I don't know about the Dice roll though.
Could do with knowing what that is.

  • What word processing programs come on a mac mini

also is there any good free ones for a mac? thanks

I think you only get a demo version of Microsoft Office, and TextEdit, the regular Mac text editor... this may not be what your are looking for.
You can then purchase iWork or get Neo Office, which is free, and pretty good.
Also, you may want to take a look at VersionTracker or MacUpdate to find some shareware that may suit your needs.

  • HT203167 I purchased the ink word processing program and installed it on a new iPad last week.  I couldn't use my computer to access the cloud so I couldn't transfer files to the iPad.  I returned the ipad and bought a macbook air, can I still load the in

Can I still use my ink program for my mac air?  I loaded it on an ipad that I returned.  How do I do it?

You can only use that app on an iPad (and potentially an iPhone or iPod Touch if it's not an iPad-specific app) - you can't use it on a Mac as they are different operating systems.

  • What is a good word processing program?

Can someone suggest a good word processing app for Mac?

You can purchase Office 2011 - Mactopia - if you want the best. Or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
TextEdit is included with OS X. It is not a high level word processor but it may be adequate.
A good free alternative to TextEdit with more features is Bean 3.2.5.
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • I just got a MacBook Air and I want to transfer my documents which I wrote using Microsoft Word 2004 program.  What would be the safest word program to use to be able to continue to work on these documents and share them with people with PCs?

I have tried to use Pages on my other computer, but not having time to deal with the differences between Pages and Word, I went back to using Word.  I'm not sure what word processing program to load on to this new computer.  Any ideas?

Have you tried Office 2011 for mac? You can download a 30 day free trial copy here.

  • Using 10.5.6 and word

I use MS office Suite 10 for my word processing and Excel etc. I know it is old, but it's a really good word processing program. I also know it's not an Apple program, but Word is what we use at my work place. The problem is that the old Office 10 won't open attachments very well, including Excel. My tech guy tells me I need to update to Office 2008, but it will eliminate my good old Word and replace it with the 2008 version, not nearly as usable. Anyone know of a way to keep my old Word if I download the newer 2008 version?
    Thanks,
    BF

I am pretty sure the Office 2008 installs as a separate set of applications, independent of previous versions of Office on the computer. I no longer have Office 10, but I have Office 2004 and Office 2008 running independently of each other, at the same time even.
Unlike other updates, like the Mac operating system updates, Office doesn't overwrite or eliminate previous versions of the software, it installs a completely new independent version.
