How to launch a hidden process
Hello! I am new to programming for the Macintosh.
I would like to launch a hidden process in a similar way one might do on Windows with CreateProcess by passing SW_HIDE to the startup info, or using ShowWindow(hwnd, SW_HIDE).
I am not interested in "Hiding" the window in the typical Macintosh sense, because the Dock still indicates that the process is running. I don't want to edit the Info.plist file to include LSBackgroundOnly because modifying that file would require elevated access (which I am trying to avoid).
If there was a way to combine the typical Macintosh "Hiding" with the behavior provided by LSBackgroundOnly (preventing the Dock from showing the process) without modifying the Info.plist file, that might be good enough.
Any alternate, completely different approaches are also appreciated.I accomplished this by doing the following:
I used NSWorkspace's NSWorkspaceLaunchAndHide option to call launchApplicationAtURL. For my usage (but for not all applications) this was enough to hide the launched application's windows.
To prevent the launched application from showing up in the dock (or gaining focus) I modified the application's Info.plist to include the LSBackgroundOnly property.
Because I did not want to require administrator access but needed to modify an application's Info.plist file, I do the following:
1) Create a new <ApplicationName>.app directory in the current user's home directory
2) Copy the target application's Info.plist file to the new directory
3) Modify the copied Info.plist to include the LSBackgroundOnly property
4) Create symbolic links to all the other files/folders in the target application's directory (MacOS, PkgInfo, Resources)
5) Launch from the new <ApplicationName>.app
With that, most applications will start invisibly (no windows, no dock icon, but obviously visible from the Activity Monitor, ps ux, etc).
Some applications still display a window. I've been able to hide this window by (for example) running an AppleScript that tells the application to hide all of its windows, but this solution is inelegant as the window is still usually visible for a fraction of a second. If anyone knows how to handle these edge cases, I would appreciate the help!
Otherwise, I hope this is helpful to anyone else who is trying to accomplish the same effect! -
Hidden process eats half my CPU (after 10.4.7 install)
I'm running a MBP with the latest firmware previously installed. After updating to 10.4.7, about half of my CPU is consumed, but I can see what's doing it. Neither Activity Monitor nor the shell command "top" shows the culprit, even when viewing all processes.
The problem does disappear when I boot up into safe mode and continues to stay away after I've manually started all of my startup items. I have a strange suspicion that Spotlight is responsible, but, again, it's not showing any CPU-hogging processes.
I've had some other minor annoyances with the update like various preferences appear to have been forgotten and especially Spotlight lost its settings/index, but otherwise, the update functions well, even if I've effectively lost one of my CPUs.
If someone has any advice on tracking this down and killing it, I'd much appreciate it. My MacBookPro was already hot too the touch, now with the CPU running at a minimum of 100/200%, it's down-right scorching! (not to mention the loss of CPU available for MY tasks). I've had to put a USB-powered fan on it just to use it.
MacBookPro 15.4" Mac OS X (10.4) 10.4.6 -> 10.4.7 updateOK. I've tried a more methodical approach to this. I've noticed that my login seems to load just fine, then after some period of time, the CPU goes up and stays up. Usually from 1-5 minutes after login. I also noticed that once this high-cpu-usage occurs, any new process IDs are several thousand higher than the previous process I've run. Clearly this indicates that something is trying to be run, probably failing, then something is trying to run it again.
Rebooting again, I've monitored this whole process by watching top run with a short refresh interval. Sure enough, after a minute or two of logging-in, the action started, and a high frequency of launches of "nmbd" were spotted in top.
Did a "> man nmbd" and found that this is part of the samba package. Next step was to go to the Sharing preference panel, then stop the Windows Sharing. Processor immediately dropped to normal usage. Whew!
Unfortunately, I can't start window sharing again without triggering the heat and loss of cycles, so this isn't quite solved... only narrowed down.
SURELY someone else that has a MBP that has upgraded to 10.4.7 is also running Windows Sharing... why am I the only one with this problem? Can anyone confirm that Windows Sharing works for them in 10.4.7 and a MBP?
Also, how do I fix the problem? Anyone? -
I've already posted on the Google Chrome forum's but nobody could help me there. Hopefully someone here can.
I've noticed that spontaneously, Chrome is updating in the background. Growl shows a notification that the chrome update image was mounted and a little bit later it unmounted. This happens when Chrome isn't even open. My questions are:
1) no relevant google update process is running in activity monitor when this happens. Are there hidden processes that are not shown by activity monitor?
2) If there are, how can I view and manage these hidden processes/services?
Thanks for the help.themacfreak wrote:
Thank you so much for the help! Yes, you are right: there is a com.google.keystone.agent.plist file in my launchagents folder. I can't believe google didn't ask me/tell me that it was installing an autoupdater.
Are you sure you didn't agree to this when you signed up for and/or installed Google material?
Do you have any suggestions on a good program to view launchd .plist?
The "official" way to view .plist files is with the Property List Editor utility, part of the Developer package. You can view the text in a .plist file with TextEdit, although the result is somewhat messy.
Is Lingon a good program even though it is being developed anymore?
I'm not familiar with that program. -

My company is developing a game for the iPhone and iPad devices using Flash cs5.5 and Air3.0
The client requires that certain features be supported - such things like GameCenter, Rating system, etc... none of which is currently supported by flash for the iOS.
However, they did provide us with a bunch of xCode sample files on how they want things to work.
My idea was to bridge the gap in functionality by creating a native exention that utilized the xcode source that was given to me, thus giving me the functionality that is required.
But first, I need to actually CREATE a native extension, even just a basic echo/hello world... I have followed all the steps from various guides and tutorials and I have managed to create an ipa and put it on my iPad2 to test, but when the program starts up, nothing happens, I am left with a black screen. When I comment out the lines of code that intialize the extension, it fires up just fine.
(and yes, I even tried to put things in try blocks in case there was an error - no luck)
So I am hoping that someone can read through the process of what I am doing below and point out what I am doing wrong, or what I am missing.
What I am using:
Mac Mini running OSX 10.7.2 - this is used to run xCode 4.1 build 4B110
PC - Windows 7 home 64bit - Running Flash CS5.5 (version 11.5.1.3469) with the AIR 3.0 SDK inside it. I also have the AIR 3.0 sdk in a seperate folder for command line running. (This is my primary developement platform)
The PC does have flash builder installed, but I have never really used it, nor do I know how to use it... everything that has been built to date has been done using Flash CS5.5
So, this is what I have done.
The first thing I do is create a .a static library on the mac.
I open xcode and create a new project.
Select iOS Framework and Library, then select "Cocoa touch Static Library"
Give it a name, in this case "EchoExtension" and put it in a folder.
I then delete the EchoExtension.h file as all the samples I have seen to date don't use it.
I then add "FlashRuntimeExtension.h" to the project from the AIR3.0 sdk frameworks folder on my PC
I then delete everything in my .m file and, following several different examples and tutorials, type up the following code:
// EchoExtension.m
// EchoExtension
#include "FlashRuntimeExtensions.h"
FREObject echo(FREContext ctx, void* funcData, uint32_t argc, FREObject argv[]) {
return argv[0];
//----------- Extention intializer and finalizer ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -
// A native context instance is created
void ContextInitializer(void* extData, const uint8_t* ctxType, FREContext ctx, uint32_t* numFunctionsToTest, const FRENamedFunction** functionsToSet) {
// setup the number of functions in this extention
// for easy reference, set the number of function that this extention will use.
int FunctionCount = 1;
// set the pointer reference to the number of function this extention will use.
*numFunctionsToTest = FunctionCount;
// create an array to store all the functions we will use.
FRENamedFunction* func = (FRENamedFunction*)malloc(sizeof(FRENamedFunction)*FunctionCount);
// create an array entry for each function
func[0].name = (const uint8_t*)"echo"; // the name of the function
func[0].functionData = NULL; // the data type
func[0].function = &echo; // reference to the actual function
// save the array in a pointer.
*functionsToSet = func;
// A native context instance is disposed
void ContextFinalizer(FREContext ctx) {
return;
// Initialization function of each extension
void ExtInitializer(void** extDataToSet, FREContextInitializer* ctxInitializerToSet, FREContextFinalizer* ctxFinalizerToSet) {
*extDataToSet = NULL;
*ctxInitializerToSet = &ContextInitializer;
*ctxFinalizerToSet = &ContextFinalizer;
// Called when extension is unloaded
void ExtFinalizer(void* extData) {
return;
I then go "Product", "Build" and it creates libEchoExtension.a
I copy this .a file over to my PC.
I am now finish with that god foresaken mac (*shudders*)
Back on my PC, I create a folder for my test project. For all intents an purposes, let's call this "D:\src\EchoExtension" I then create 2 folders, one called "lib" and one called "app". Lib is where I will create the actionscript source for my extension.
In my lib folder, I create a new fla in flash cs5.5 called "EchoExtension.fla"
I create in my lib folder, the following:
com\extensions\EchoExtension\EchoExtension.as
a folder called "Build" in which I place my libEchoExtension.a file.
in my EchoExtension.as file, I place the following code:
package com.extensions.EchoExtension
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
import flash.events.IEventDispatcher;
import flash.external.ExtensionContext;
public class EchoExtension extends EventDispatcher
protected var _extensionContext:ExtensionContext;
* Constructor.
public function EchoExtension()
super();
// Initialize extension.
_extensionContext = ExtensionContext.createExtensionContext( "com.extensions.EchoExtension", "main" );
public function echo(Prompt:String):String
return _extensionContext.call( "echo" ) as String;
In my main fla, on the first layer of the time line, I simply put the following code to make sure that the as file get's included when I publish the swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
var ext:EchoExtension = new EchoExtension();
stop();
I then open up my fla's publish settings, turn off the swf - which I don't need, and check the swc and make sure that it outputs into my build folder. "./Build/EchoExtension.swc"
I also set the player to Air 3.0 (which I can do since I have successfully integrated AIR 3.0 along side my AIR 2.6 and can build both without any problems)
I then publish the swc. So far, so good. No problems.
I then make a copy of the swc and rename it to EchoExtension.swc.zip, at which point I extract the library.swf file from it and also place it in my build folder.
I then create extension.xml in by build folder which contains the following code:
<extension xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/extension/2.5">
<id>com.extensions.EchoExtension</id>
<versionNumber>1</versionNumber>
<platforms>
<platform name="iPhone-ARM">
<applicationDeployment>
<nativeLibrary>libEchoExtension.a</nativeLibrary>
<initializer>ExtInitializer</initializer>
<finalizer>ExtFinalizer</finalizer>
</applicationDeployment>
</platform>
</platforms>
</extension>
Now, at this point I am a little wary, because I am building for the iPad2... the platform is iPhone... I thought that may be a problem and at one point I tested the same build on the iPhone4 and had the same results. I have also tested it using the platform name of iPad-ARM and got the same results... So I don't think that is the problem, but I am unsure.
Now, to make things easier, I created a batch file called "buildane.bat" in my build folder. This is what I will use to create my .ane file and it contains the following command line:
D:\SDKs\AirSDK30\bin\adt -package -target ane EchoExtension.ane extension.xml -swc EchoExtension.swc -platform iPhone-ARM library.swf libEchoExtension.a
I then open a command prompt and run buildane.bat and poof. My ane is created. My build folder has the following files in it now:
buildane.bat
EchoExtension.ane
EchoExtension.swc
EchoExtension.swc.zip
extension.xml
libEchoExtension.a
library.swf
Now that I have my swc, ane, and all that, it's time to create my sample application that will be used to test my new extension.
I go back to my D:\src\EchoExtension folder and go into the app folder I created ealier.
I then create a new flash project called EchoExtensionTester.fla
I open the action script settings, library paths, and add the swc that I created in my D:\src\EchoExtension\lib\build folder to my project.
On my stage, I create an input text field called txtInput, a dynamic text field called txtEcho, and a couple of buttons called btnClear, btnRuntime, and btnEcho
I open up the first layer in the time line and place the following code:
// basic imports.
import flash.desktop.NativeApplication;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.text.TextField;
// import the extension from our swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
// set our input text field to need the softkeyboard
txtInput.needsSoftKeyboard = true;
// add the event handlers to our buttons.
btnEcho.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnEcho_Click);
btnClear.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnClear_Click);
btnRunTime.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnRunTime_Click);
// create our extension variable.
var ext:EchoExtension;
try
// initialize our echo extension.
ext = new EchoExtension();
} catch (e:Error) {
txtEcho.text = "Error trying to create new EchoExtension:\n\n" + e;
stop();
// clear the echo text field
function btnClear_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text = "";
// just for testing, put the current version of air runtime into our text field so we can make sure we are running air 3.0
function btnRunTime_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "\nRuntime version = " + NativeApplication.nativeApplication.runtimeVersion;
// call the extension, passing it whatever is in the input text field and have it return it and place it in our echo text field
function btnEcho_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "\n";
try
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text);
} catch (e:Error) {
txtEcho.text += "\nError calling ext.echo: " + e;
I then save the project, Open the Air for iOS settings and set the following: (but yes, I know... I am going to have to use adt to do the build, but I need to create the swf first)
Output file: EchoExtensionTester.ipa
Appname: EchoExtensionTester
Version 1.0
Landscape
Fullscreen On
Auto orientation is off
rendering GPU
device: iPad and iPhone
Res: High
Deployement: I use my certificate and provisionging profile that I use for my Primary project (which work) and set for device testing.
I close the window and save again... but before I publish, I open newly created "EchoExtensionTester-app.xml" that is in my app folder.
I add <extensions> <extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID> </extensions> to the xml file so now it looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/3.0">
<extensions>
<extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID>
</extensions>

</application>
I save the changes to the xml and go back to flash. I then publish.
The swf is created as it should be, but then I get the error message:
Error creating files.
An implmentation for native extension 'com.extensions.EchoExtension' required by the application was not found for the target platform.
Now, while this is a pain in the rear, I new this was going to happen because in my reading of tutorials and samples, they all said that you must use adt to build the ipa... but that's fine... all I wanted anyway was the swf, which I now have in my app folder.
I close down flash as I don't need it anymore and I create a new batch file: (note: I change the names of the cert, provision profile, and password for this post)
cls
"D:\SDKs\AirSDK30\bin\adt" -package -target ipa-ad-hoc -storetype pkcs12 -keystore "D:\src\mycert.p12" -storepass MYPASSWORD -provisioning-profile "D:\src\myprovfile.mobileprovision" "EchoExtensionTester.ipa" "EchoExtensionTester-app.xml" "EchoExtensionTester.swf" -extdir ../lib/Build
set /p dummy=
echo done
I then open a command window in my app folder and run build.bat...
I wait about 2 minutes....
YAY! My ipa file has been created with no errors reported so far.... Time to copy this bad boy to the iPad and see what happens.
I open iTunes, drag "EchoExtensionTester.ipa" over to the Apps, then sync my device....
YAY! iTunes has successfully installed the ipa on the device... and there is by bright and shiney blank icon for Echo Extension Tester...
I open the app.... and.....
nothing.
I wait
still nothing.
I go to the bathroom.
I get back... still nothing... just a black screen.
I press the iPad home button, the app minimized, I restore it... nothing... black screen.
hrm. Time to do a little trial and error to see if I can figure out where the break down is.
As a test, I open my fla and I comment out the following lines:
ext = new EchoExtension();
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text);
I then rebuild the swf... get the same error (don't care)... I then rebuild the ipa using the batch file.... and re-install it on the device when it's done.
The exact same thing....
I open the xml file... and remove the <extensionID>com.extensions.EchoExtension</extensionID> line, save and re-run the batch file again... wait for the ipa to finish, and run it on the device.
I fire up the program on the iPad and it launches perfectly... except for the commented line of code to actually create and call the extension, everything works as it should. The runtime on the device is reporting as 3.0.0.4080
As a test, I open the .fla back up and uncomment the 2 lines I commented out above... keeping the extensionID out of the xml file, I re-publish the ipa.... of course, this time, it actually creates the ipa from flash because the extension id is not in the xml.
I put the ipa file with the extension code in place on the ipad... Fire it up and put some text into the txtInput and press the echo button. I get the following error:Error calling ext.echo: TypeError: Error #1009
I suspect that is because I failed into include the extension in the descriptor... but when I build it with the extensionid in the xml, I just get a black screen. I am 99% sure that the extension context in the ext object is null (because that is what happens when I run it in flash debug without the extension lines in the xml)
And here I am stuck.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or what I have forgotten to do?
Thanks.I have been trying to get the remote debugging working with my flash and ipad2... but I can't seem to figure it out. I looked at several tutorials, but the ipad build just doesn't want to seem to connect to the flash remote debugger.
Anyway... here is a little more information.
I moved the initialization of the extension from the start of the application to the button event itself. Now, the application will start up exactly as it's supposed to, but when I press the button that creates and initalizes the extension and does the echo call, the application crashes.
Here is the new code:
// basic imports.
import flash.desktop.NativeApplication;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.text.TextField;
// import the extension from our swc.
import com.extensions.EchoExtension.EchoExtension;
// set our input text field to need the softkeyboard
txtInput.needsSoftKeyboard = true;
// add the event handlers to our buttons.
btnEcho.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnEcho_Click);
btnClear.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnClear_Click);
btnRunTime.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnRunTime_Click);
txtEcho.text += "Initialization complete.\n";
stop();
// clear the echo text field
function btnClear_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text = "";
// just for testing, put the current version of air runtime into our text field so we can make sure we are running air 3.0
function btnRunTime_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
txtEcho.text += "Runtime version = " + NativeApplication.nativeApplication.runtimeVersion +"\n" ;
// call the extension, passing it whatever is in the input text field and have it return it and place it in our echo text field
function btnEcho_Click(e:MouseEvent):void
// create our extension variable.
try
var ext:EchoExtension = new EchoExtension();
txtEcho.text += ext.echo(txtInput.text) +"\n" ;
ext = null;
} catch (err:Error) {
txtEcho.text += "Error: " + err.message +"\n" ;
Now, program crashes are an entirely different animal because the ipad creates a crash log! YAY!
this is what the crash log contains:

Im trying to convert a PDF into an excel document and I keep getting an error message that reads "An error has occurred while trying to access the service". WHat am I doing wrong?
it seems my subscription had expired so I signed up again.. It was still having trouble so I repeated the sign up process again.. Then it worked perfectly.. Unfortunately, I think I just subscribed twice and need to cancel one of them. Ugh. Such a pain when I'm trying to get this project completed. I'll be canceling at least one of the subscriptions in the morning. Adobe is not my favorite company right now. None of this was intuitive. And trying to get help was an absolute waste of an hour.

Nathaniel

Will my iPhone 4s turn off as part of the process of updating my iOS? The on/off button on my iphone doesn't work so I can't allow my phone to run out of battery or turn off because I will not be able to turn it back on.
Ok here is a nuance
Try it - when your phone locks
Insert the charging cord which is connected to a power source on the other end - wait about a minute - and then take it out
The screen will "wake up"
That is always your way out
I use assistive touch as well to lessen the wear and tear on my home button
Sleep mode is what your phone does when you are asleep

I upgraded to 4.0.1 this weekend on my iPhone 3GS and my wife's iPhone 3GS. We are now both suffering from only 5 hours of battery life.
Prior to the upgrade we enjoyed over 16 hours of battery life. The only difference is the upgraded operating system. This proves the problem is the upgrade to 4.0.1, maybe not v4.0.1 itself, but definitely the upgrade from v3.1.3 on a 3GS.
We use(d) these machines in our business and because the working business day is greater than 5 hours, this upgrade to 4.0.1 is costing us real money. If Apple wants to be considered more than an up-market toy maker, it will need to show more commitment in support of real world businesses.
Can Apple continue to refuse to accept there is a problem? I've tried ignoring the problem, like Apple, but it didn't make my battery last longer. So I guess ignoring the problem is not the correct answer? Maybe I need to hold the machine differently with v4?
I call for Apple to immediately make an optional downgrade to v3.1.3 available, or issue a fix to the v4.0.1 upgrade process/software. If any empowered employee of Apple reads this, please action immediately.
Otherwise, what is Apple doing to resolve this issue, other than ignoring it?Hi
When you say nothing in the csauth log... do you mean nothing at all... or nothing that looks like an error?
Try setting logging to max and seeing where it gets to.
I suspect there is something in your 3.3 config that doesnt get upgraded corectly. Its impossible for every scenario to be tested - Im not sure how much upgrade testing actually gets done. Probably left until the end of the test cycle.

I have an archive of all my music on an external drive. I wanter to play the music on another computer. When I hooked up the drive and launched iTunes with option key, I linked up the library on the external. iTunes gets part way through linking then says can't load the rest as the disk is full. What disk? What is iTunes doing that it needs more hard drive space for files that already exist? Why can't iTunes just see the files on the external and play them without this seeming dupe process?
Tried hooking up my external drive to my Mini. This morning my Mini had all my info listed, but I couldn't play any songs, for obvious reasons. Now, my Mini is hooked up to the external, iTunes prefs are set on the path to the external - but there is no music in iTunes. No lists, no songs, nada. Just a virgin iTunes window. ***?

[JS][CS5] PlaceXML fails. What Am I Doing Wrong?
Hi everyone,
I have an XML file which I can place manually but I'm trying to automate the process with a script but I cannot work out why the script is failing. It falls over with an Error 30477.
The document has several different types of master spreads and the XML is organised into appropriate sections. Based on the section in the XML file, I need to create a page, apply the right master page and place the XML.
The script creates the page, applies the master but fails when placing the xmlElement. I've tried several different approaches and searched everywhere for an answer but cannot work out why.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
/* Places XML section on appropriate pages */ alert("Starting Process");var myDocument = app.activeDocument; var currentPage;var masterSpread; var xmlBook = myDocument.xmlElements[0].xmlElements[0]; if ( xmlBook.markupTag.name.toString() == 'book' ) { // In the right place for ( var lp = 0; lp < xmlBook.xmlElements.length; lp++) { var xmlElement = xmlBook.xmlElements[lp]; // Structural element in the book switch ( xmlElement.markupTag.name.toString() ) { case "standard": var currentPage = myDocument.pages.add(LocationOptions.AT_END); var masterSpread = myDocument.masterSpreads.itemByName('S-Standard'); currentPage.appliedMaster = masterSpread; var targetFrame = myDocument.pages.lastItem().textFrames[0]; /* Throws: Error 30477 Invalid value for parameter 'using' */ xmlElement.placeXML(targetFrame); break; } } } else { alert(xmlBook.markupTag.name); throw { name: 'FatalError', message: 'XML Structure wrong' }; }

Hello 23435,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPhone was knocked out of your hand and now it displays blue and black colors on the display. It does sound like this iPhone may need to be evaluated for service. If you would like more information about this process, please refer to the attached web link below.

Launchd, Startup Item crud - -what am I doing wrong?
So, I have a startup item which works when I type
sudo SystemStarter start MayaFlexlm
Works great. Spawns flexlm, a daemon that listens for incoming connections for licensing.
Trouble is, it does not automatically start on reboot. I always have to type that command to make it run. This is obviously a problem and I don't understand why SystemStarter doesn't do what it claims.
So I said, good time to migrate to launchd. When I made a plist, however, and tried to run it with
sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.rcook.mayaflexlm.plist
I get nothing in the system log, no daemon running, and life ***. Can someone take a look at my code and tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Here is the Startup Item which works:
=====================================
#!/bin/sh
Maya license server daemon startup, hacked up by Rich Cook extenstion 3=9605
. /etc/rc.common
StartService ()
if RUNNING=$(/usr/aw/COM/bin/lmstat -c /var/flexlm/aw_server.dat | grep -v 'not running' >/dev/null 2>&1); then
ConsoleMessage "Starting Maya flexlm server."
/usr/aw/COM/bin/aw_flexlm start
else
ConsoleMessage "Maya license server (flexlm) is already running."
fi
StopService ()
ConsoleMessage "Stopping Maya flexlm server"
/usr/aw/COM/bin/aw_flexlm stop
RestartService ()
StopService
StartService
RunService "$1"

Here is the launch daemon which makes me hate Apple Computers:
======================================================
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

As one of our scaly unpleasant friends was hinting at, labels are not used for much by launchd; they have little operational significance, I believe.
I've never seen one whose label was different that the file name (less .plist) so it's a good thing to change anyway. Perhaps labels are only used to identify them in a human-readable listing.
I do get an error in the log, though, which I think means that the process exited immediately.
That is an important plot point.
Perhaps there launchd expects the daemon to keep running and kills it if it doesn't? I recall in the man page or somewhere they said the process cannot daemonize itself.
That is correct.
aw_flexlm starts the actual license software and then exits. This is probably my problem. But I didn't write this code -- all I want is for this thing to start up on launch. I will trust it won't crash.
Is aw_flexlm a binary or a script?
If it is a script, you should be able to look inside and find where it actually kicks off a program. Duplicate that line and turn it into an echo. Run it and now you'll have your actual executable and arguments.
If aw_flexlm is a binary, you will have to look for documentation for it. There are sometimes options that will prevent some or all of the various daemonization actions.
I did a quick check and it seems that aw_flexlm is indeed a script. You should be able to look around in it. The 'start' operation is easy. See what it does for the 'stop' operation. Launchd can't perform any complicated shutdown process. It expects the program to shutdown cleanly if killed. Not all programs will do that. -
Temporary queue - what am I doing wrong?
I have two different apps - one server and many clients, both are working with OpenMQ 4.2 on SP1 Vista x86.
Conception is:
1. Server has an one permanent queue to whom clients send auth requests.
2. Each time client prepares authorization request it creates temporary queue, where response from server should arrive - one queue per each client.
3. Name of this temporary queue is attached to authorization request.
But it doesn't work =((((((((
Piece of code on client dedicated to temp queue:
dataQueue = session.createTemporaryQueue();
dataQueueName = dataQueue.getQueueName();then DataQueueName is being sent to server as simple String message (something like temporary_destination://queue/***.***.***.***/61253/1 )property where it tries to use this queue:
// processing received message...
dataQueue = new com.sun.messaging.Queue(receivedString);But it doesn't work, Connection not created exception occurs.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks to everybody for your future answers.thanks for your answer!
I've tried to work with autocreated queues as you wrote and it works, great =)
but I have a problem when adopting your example
Queue tmp = m.getJMSReplyTo();
there is type mismatch here, tmp is an +com.sun.messaging.Queue+ object, but method +getJMSReplyTo()+ returns +javax.jms.Destination+ =(
