What is 'Backing up' and why does it take so long even if my library is identical to my ipod?

I've just plugged by ipod touch into the computer to sync it and it keeps telling me the ipod contains stuff that isnt in my library (eventhough my library is identical to the content on the ipod) and that if i dont back up i will lose this stuff, i clicked back up and now it has been backing up for over 2 hours! what is it doing and why is it taking so long?

TC has to check to see which files need to be backed up. So its going thru the file directory and looking for any changes since the last backup. Do you have a lot of files on your Mac to check? Or are they just a small number but very large. If its the former, then that might be the culprit.

  • What does 'Preparing...' mean exactly and why does it take so long?

Even incremental backups using Time Capsule seem to stall at the 'Preparing...' for 10 or 20 minutes, then only write a couple of megabytes of files. Right now my machine has been sitting at this stage for more than 4 HOURS! (and no, it's not an initial backup)
Does anyone know exactly what is going on during this unfathomably long period?
It'd be very useful if the Time Machine interface gave a hint that it was actually making progress - something along the lines of 'Preparing... x minutes to go' would be much more useful than the current dialog which might as well say 'has it crashed?'

  • What exactly is "other" and why does it take -up so much space?

I'm trying to free up some space on my iPad2, and see "other" is usiong 6.7 gigs..  What exactly is "other"?

Actually "other" is app data, Safari Bookmarks, calendar entries, text messages, notes, Safari History, email messages and things like that - stuff associated with apps - but not the apps themselves or any other media.
Your "other" should be nowhere near 6.7 GB. You had a corrupt sync. You can try restarting, the iPad, rebooting it by holding down on the home and sleep buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears or unsync all photos and music and then resync all photos and music.
However, many times you need to restore the device to factory settings and then restore from a backup in order to reduce that bloated size. That should probably be no more than 1 GB and more likely between 200 and 750 MB in total size.

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

what is cookies.sqlite and why does it slow the start up of mozilla by a minute or so. I found it and deleted it,fixed the problem, but it reappears every time I restart mozilla.

AVG reports these sqlite cookies each time firefox starts. they usually belong to tribalfusion or some other tracker. How do I block them in the first place. I thought firefox is a safe browser. Did not have this problem until I upgraded to 3.6.

Indexing allows Spotlght to know where everything is on your computer.  It won't take as long as it says, the times it gives are always vastly inflated.

    Hi,
    For maintenance.

Check your Applications folder. If you don't want the app, just drag it to the Trash.
IMHO you do not need this utility. Your Mac will do maintenance for you.

  • What is "Directory Service" and why does it "use up 194%" ?

What is "Directory Service" and why does it "use up 194%" on my istat CPU app monitor?
Ever since I installed Leopard I've noticed this happening more and more - especially when I install an external hard drive or unplug my ethernet line - this is plainly weird and never happened under Tiger - the temperature shoots up to 84° also - I always to a restart to get rid of it but it's kind of worrying....anybody have any ideas?

    Had this happen myself.
It does have something to do with Spotlight/searching. Should go away after a while, or so I have heard from other users, 'cause it hasn't stopped driving me and my fan mad yet.
Am going to have my MacBook index and follow-up on indexing and whatever else it feels is necessary to finally allow me to search in peace over the weekend while locking it away where I can't hear it.
    Hopefully that does the trick.
If it wasn't for things working better/faster and most things looking better I might actually consider taking Leopard off again ...

  • What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • What's wrong with this Forum? Why does Adobe take so long to reply to posts?!

What's wrong with this Forum? Why does Adobe take so long to reply to posts?!
This is actually "specific" to this Photoshop Forum.
I typically get responses back from other Adobe forum promptly.
    Chime in.

The Adobe engineering folks DO duck in here from time to time - and that's a BLESSING!  Please name any other big company where you get to interact with the engineers AT ALL.  I can't.  But I suspect the engineers actually have a lot oof real work to do, and their time here is necessarily limited.
Your comments are more along the line of "I pay a huge amount, for that I expect better support".  These are very valid comments.  But reality is different from what we may expect, and this forum is not the place to expect Adobe support participation AT ALL.  In fact, the technical support people at Adobe often direct users to come here (something I've always found amusing).
At the higher level, Adobe may simply not be spending enough on support for literally millions of users.  Is is greed or smart business to try to minimize support cost?  That's up for individuals to decide.
I suggest you write a snail-mail letter to the Adobe president if you're not getting the support you need.

  • Why does it take a long time to back up my iPhone?

My iPhone is taking forever to backup. Whenever I pluf it in and it starts to back up it seems to stay on the screen in my iTunes and the bar doesn't move at all. I need help. What should I do?

Extraordinary long backups are caused by an error when an app (or apps) was installed or updated, particularly if you have ever installed or updated using the App Store on the device itself rather than iTunes. Even if you were never aware that there was a problem, they can arise and will cause problems with the backup process. Maybe you did have a problem during an update or install. Maybe the update stalled, or the App Store crashed. These issues are very likely what have been causing your long backups and you didn't even know it. During the backup process these errors cause it to drag and pause for a very long time before it gets moving again. From your view, you just see a normal backup that is taking hours, and undoubtedly annoying you to no end. On the inside, iTunes is trying desperately to get past a roadblock that it doesn't know where it came from.

  • Why does it take so long to back up whilst im updating from 4.3.5 to 5.0?

Why does it take so long to back up whilst im updating from 4.3.5 to 5.0?
its been on for ages and its not even a quarter of the way backed up!

The Brave New World of AC wireless networking.. where the reality falls far short of the hype.
Unfortunately in an actual transfer situation, the signal to noise of wireless (RSSI figure drops dramatically), It simply uses AC as a link speed but speed is always renegotiated during an actual file transfer.. to some sustainable level. I suspect that level is not AC wireless but N.
It does matter if you run older devices.. nothing with a or b or g wireless should be running in your house. Even n wireless may cause issues.. try turning everything else off and see if you get speed lift.
As far as the time required for a clean up, is this a first backup as they always take a significantly longer time. Once you are doing regular incrementals the time is usually very short.

It's not like playing a tape. It has to convert it from whatever format you currently have into a codec suitable for editing (Apple Intermediate). This will take longer or shorter depending how compressed your original format is, and on the ability of your CPUs to catch up.

Why Does IT Take SOOOOO Long To Get New Shows And Podcast Updates!!!!! It seems to me that it takes and unusually long time for TV shows to be uploaded to itunes and it takes FOREVER (VH1) to get Podcast updates. Also I notice that Vh1's Best Week Ever is a hit or miss deal. Some weeks it's on iTunes and some weeks it's not......why?

The iTunes store simply provides a link to the originating podcast server.
When the podcast owner puts a new episode up, it is available.
