What is Backup doing?

I have about 45 appl installed on my white iPhone, 571 songs, 17 videos, and 63 photos. I am using about 8.6 GB.
The size of the backup folder on my hard drive is 289 MB. It contains 5036 files. (no, that is not a typo)
All of these files were created the same date, one after another, and so I have to believe that this is all part of one backup. iTunes swears I have only one backup available.
Five thousand files? ***?!?!? What is backup doing that it needs 5 thousand files? Is this why it's taking an hour or more?

Noy just apps, but apps, contacts, emails, text messages, settings. All of those get backed up. I don't know for sure, but what if each email and each contact was a seperate backed up file. It's easier to delete one file during a backup than change lots of data in a big file (delete a file containing a contact).
I don't know that each item is a seperate file, but it would account for the large number of files that are backed up

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The "!" in the edit window indicates that iPhoto has lost the link to the original file in the Originals folder. Check in the Originals folder to make sure you have the full sized image files in there.
Did you rename or move any files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder? That's one way to get the situation you're experiencing but it would be only for those you tampered with. Since it's the entire library then you've probably fallen victim to the damaged database file problem that hit a lot of users.
If the full sized image files are there you can try to rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all of the options. I'm not optimistic that the rebuild will recover your library but it's worth a try.
If the rebuild does not work you'll have to start a new library and import the image files from the damaged one as follows:
1 - rename the iPhoto Library folder that's on the external HD.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select Create a new library, navigate to the external HD and do so.
3 - with the new library open, drag the Originals folder from the old library into the open iPhoto window.
This will give you a new library with the same rolls as the old one. However you'll lose your albums, slideshows, keywords, etc.
To help protect from this type of problem in the future check out the tip at the end of my signature.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Run Time Machine from the menu bar.

Did you check your security software settings? iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues
Since you installed the new iTunes 10.5, you might have to change the settings for it.

If all your synced media like apps and music is in your iTunes library then simply:
- Backup to iTunes.
- Restore the iPod from that backup.

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup copy to move everything to your new computer.

Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

If you purchased the iMac less than 3 years ago and it has got one of the defective hard disks, Apple will still replace it for free. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller. A Genius will check if your Mac was purchased less than 3 years ago.
If the computer is older, you will have to pay. Note that if you already have the iMac on April 12th, 2013 and before, and you knew that your iMac had a defective hard disk, you should have taken it even if the hard drive was working correctly

Hard to say but most likely you are not doing anything wrong but have some library corruption

Did you restore the phone as a new device when you did the restore/unlock, or did you restore it from an existing backup? I have found that when unlocking an iPhone on the AT&T network, you don't get the message that the unlock was successful if you don't restore as a new device. The unlock still works, you just don't get the message. Perhaps it is not carrier specific for this behavior.

I have been trying to update my software for the past 3 hours. It just goes so far and stalls. I've never had this problem before, what am I doing wrong?

Do you get any error messages ? If you get a network timeout error when downloading the update then try temporarily turning off all your firewall and antivirus software until the download has completed.
It's best to only update via your own computer, otherwise you risk losing all your iPad's contents - updating to iOS 5 wipes the iPad and then restores your backup. If you having problems downloading the update then you could try downloading the update file via a browser on another computer and then copying that file to your laptop for the actual update .

Does anyone know what is really going on? It is ridiculous that there are videos telling people to put Q-tips into the phone. If this is what we are resorting to then the iPhone makers should be embarrassed.
I hope this post does not get blocked. I would really like to know what Apple plans to do about this or if anyone really knows how to fix this OTHER THAN replacing the phone.

That sounds like a much better idea than going to some supposed "service center" that suggests voiding the warranty on the device.
Just out of curiousity, what have YOU done to try and resolve the issue? Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Have you tried any of these steps?

What am I doing wrong? - Concerning Icons

I do not understand why this is working sometimes for me but not all the time. I have gone through the process of converting an icon to have a transparent background for several icons. I have one icon that just shows the generic picture for tiff, png, jpg whatever file type I save it in. For some reason it does not show the actual image. It is frustrating because I had it changed before then reverted it for a test and now following the same process I used to complete the task the first time it does not work. I created the image using SketchBook Express then loaded it in Preview. After which I used instant alpha to remove the background. It then displayed properly (without a background). I then saved it as a PNG file to my desktop (the icon on the desktop did not look like a transparent background). I then opened up the "Get Info" for the destination of the icon highlighted the icon in the top right corner and used copy and paste to transfer the icon image. My result is a generic image of a PNG file that looks like a piece of paper with the top right corner turned down that has a Preview icon image in the centre of it, with a capitalized PNG under the image such as this. I am not sure what I am doing wrong because it has worked before. I hope you can help and have a great day!

Thank you for responding. I do know it should work correctly because I did it before. I am almost positive that I went through the process correctly also. Your response seems correct also, so I will click the 'This helped me' button for you but I actually solved the problem prior to your response another way. I used my Time machine backup to retrieve the app with the icon. It still irriatates me that it is not working properly so if you would like to try and trouble shoot the issue I am willing to try with you. If not thank you again for your input and have a great day!
