WHAT IS BACKUP PASSWORD?

I love the answer of "you must have put a password". How about this theory, a glitch in iTunes which when selecting "encrypt", it doesn’t prompt for a password. So, the contents are encrypted with no password. But, the pickle is when restoring an encrypted backup, a password is required. This is what I call a software glitch. I called apple support last night and I think one of the supervisors, Brian, will pass this information to the engineers.
The solution to this problem would include allowing restoration of encrypted backups with blank password.
After doing some research, I have another method which I am going to test. I am going to create a password when doing a backup. I am assuming that the password is stored internally in the phone. Then once the password is set, I will try to recover the backup with the lost password.
Last resort is using all passwords which have been used. This includes pass code for phone new and old, apple id passwords old and new, all windows stored passwords new and old ( log in, email, wireless, fb, etc ).
In either case, this seems to be a common issue which Apple is not taking the initiate to resolve. It is always assumed that the users put a password and then forgot which is not the case.
It should also be noted that it is against their policy to provide means to compromise encrypted backups which could be used maliciously.
I do applaud Apple support though, they speak clear English, they are courteous, and they are professional even when they don’t know how to resolve your issue.
My long term goal after this mess is not to encrypt the backup, rather keep the backup encrypted with other means like Truecrypt.

  • Local backup was made without "Encrypt Local Backup" checked before upgrading to iOS 7 but I can't restore because a password is requested to restore it. What do I do?

I hadn't yet upgraded to iOS7 from iOS6 on my iPad so I clicked "Manual Backup" [To this computer] and "Encrypt Local Backup" was not checked.
The backup seemed to complete without error or incident.
I then went through the iOS 7 upgrade and when it was completed the options are "Set up as new device" or "Restore from Backup"
Since I didn't want to wipe all the data on my iPad, I chose restore, and it said connect to iTunes, which I did.
When I click on Restore Backup, it asks for me to choose which backup I want. I choose the last one that I had just done as indicated above (which is the default).
It then gives me a dialog of "Enter the password to unlock your iPad backup. I even tried every password I've used in the last two years. Nothing works. What I don't understand is why it's asking for a password at all?
Is there a way around this? I don't want to loose the data I just backup up.

Sorry there is no way around this.
If you don't know the password you will need to restore as new.
Then you can sync apps/music back via itunes.

  • I was told to create a password for my itunes backup, which i did.  Now its telling me my passwords is incorrect.  I dont know what to do because i am locked out of my phone and don't remember its password.

I forgot the password to unlock my phone.  I read online to go to itunes and create an encrypted password for my backup and then sync my phone and then restore it.  But now, when i try to enter my passcode into itunes to backup, it tells me it is incorrect.  I don't know what to do..  I am locked out of my phone and my itunes backup.  please help me

The backup encryption passcode has nothing to do with locking a user out of their backup.
If the encryption passcode has been forgotten, nothing can be done.  There is no reset for the encryption passcode.
Delete the backup and create a new one.

  • I'm trying to restore my Ipod touch from a backup however I don't remember the password, how do I find out what the password is?

My ipod was sent into reset mode when it was pluged into my bf's computer. I pluged it into my computer where itunes is and itunes said I had to reset it, so I did and now I'm trying to restore it from a back up in itunes. Which I didn't know exsisted and didn't set up but it's locked with a password and I have no idea what the password is. Is there a way for me to find out?

    - If the backup has a password (called encrypted backup) then you either have to remember password or correctly guess the passcode or set up the iPod as new.
    - A fw other users have reported the same problem. Tyr using other passwords like your Apple ID PW:

you can't recover iOS crypted backup password, for security purposes. your backup is useless. sorry.
if you still have your old iPhone, make a new back-up

  • What worked to find my backup encryption password that I didn't set!

As so many are dealing with, went to set-up new iphone 5 from my iphone 4 backup that was very important to me. I got the dreaded backup password hault. I tried everything! Different pc didn't work, nothing but a circle of nothing without that password! I DID NOT set a password, and don't care what anyone says, I'm 100% sure I didn't!! It is a glitch! If you ever do one backup without being sure the encryption box is unchecked on the summary page that comes up after clicking on your device name in the side list of iTunes, you are stuck! If you didn't purposely check it and pick your password, it somehow randomly picks one from somewhere that relates to you. I know it seems as tho that isn't possible for program to assign a random password that just so happens to relate to you, but it does. I've set many of passwords in my life, and have NEVER/would ever use that one!  I've never had this problem previously! After getting an official nothing can be done from all levels of Apple support, I took advice on forums of using the elcomsoft software. I read that the free trial gives you the first 2 letters. So, I downloaded the free trial of elcomsoft. It took just few minutes to download, it was super easy. You open the software, choose backup, pick your backup from the list (it will show with a lock beside it), then whatever button tells it to go (don't remember what button said but its dummy proof). About halfway thru, it showed "li..". Four character starting with li, well that was obviously my name "lila". I didn't even run it all the way to verify if it gives you more than 1st two letters. That was it!! I tried everything I could imagine including window login and lock screen code for many hours before that with no luck. My whole family uses basically same password for everything with some variation if they require a capital or character. So, I know I didn't set it as that. So, try the free trial of elcomsoft!!

Are you trying to restore from an encrypted backup or are you trying to make an encrypted backup?
If the backup you are trying to restore from is encrypted, you will have no choice but to restore to factory settings instead.

  • Tried to restore from backup but it's asking for my iCloud password for an email address that doesn't exist anymore. What do I do?

I had my phone replaced today and have tried to restore from the backup I made this morning. It didn't restore properly so I wanted to try again but I can't as it asks for my iCloud password for a non-existant email account. I changed my iCloud email about 6 months ago but my phone still thinks that is the correct email and I can't change it, can't reset my phone, can't do anything. What do I do?

The fact that the email address doesn't exist anymore doesn't matter. As far as the Apple ID is concerned, the email address is just a user name. As long as you know the password you used, it should be fine.

  • What password is used to restore a backup to an iphone

what password is used to restore a backup to an iphone

    Hey lrh666,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, when you are trying to restore it is asking you for a password. Did you enable Encrypt iPhone backup? I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support
    Encrypted backups
When your backup is encrypted, you'll need to enter the password when you enable or disable encryption or when you restore from the backup.
Make sure that the password you use is one that you'll remember. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you won't be able to restore from backup, and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

    Which password?
If you mean the passcode to your iPhone, here's the solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you mean the encryption password to your backup on your computer:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • What is the backup file password?

I am trying to backup my original iPhone 4 to a file on my Mac, then tried to restore this backup file to my new iPhone 4S and it's asking for a password for the backup file, don't know what this is.

When you first created the back up, if you selected to encrypt the back up it would have asked you to set a password.
Try all your usual passwords that you use.

If you have a corporate Exchange account set up on the phone, the administrators can require encrypted backups. Try using your Exchange password.
