I have an iTunes gift card I haven't used for a long time and want to find out how much value is left.

If it has been redeemed, then there is nothing left.
You redeem it once, then the entire balance is transferred to your account. The card retains no value at all.

Does the card not have its value written on it ? If not, then the only way to know its value is to successfully redeem it onto an account.
If the card has been redeemed then its remaining amount should be on your account, the card itself is now effectively zero. My account's balance shows at the top left of the store's page on my computer's iTunes, and by logging in to view my account via the Store > View Account menu option. On my devices it shows at the bottom of, for example, the Featured tab in the App Store app under my account id (or you can view your account via Settings > iTunes & App Stores and it should show on the screen that you are taken to)

If you tap on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores on your iPad and log into your account, does your balance show at the top of your account's screen (mine shows above the 'Apple ID' line at the top).
If it doesn't show there then have you tried logging out and back into your account, and have you checked your account's purchase history (e.g. you didn't have any pre-orders or auto-renewing subscriptions that were due) ? On your computer's iTunes you can view it via the Store > View Account menu option, on your account's page you should see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it, click on that and you should then see a list of your account's purchases. Was given an appletv about 3 years ago. my son gave me a gift card with$100 credit. Ii have only used about $30 and should have a balance.
Was recently told to update my apple and when i did i was asked for a password. I could not remember the password; went to apple id and reset my password.
Still unable to find out what is correct password and what my account balance is. Cannot find my my itunes card. I understand that once card is entered into account it should be useable.

When you reset your password then Apple will e-mail you (e-mail account associated with iTunes) a new password.
The iTunes GC was activated on your Apple ID so you can only see what the balance is as well as redeem the amount only with your Apple ID on your iTunes account using a computer, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch.

The instructions I posted for Wokbud are for iTunes on a Mac or PC. If you are trying to do it on an iPad, get yourself to a computer and try.
Also, pls note that any balance is tied to an account. If you are logged in on a different account, you will only see the balance for the one you are logged in for.

No one here can check anything for you. We're just fellow users. Nor could Apple check the value of the cards. If the value is not printed on the card or you don't have the receipt, the only way you'll see the value is by redeeming the card.

Here is why, because I made some purchases at the App Store but the cost of the purchases subtracted from the balance does not add up. So I just want to verify the cost of each purchase, but I'm unable to do that.

You can view your account's purchase history via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes, you will need to go through them seeing which show as being charged to 'store credit' (i.e. your balance) : See your purchase history in the iTunes Store - Apple Support.
That should show any applicable taxes that were applied (e.g. in the US the listed prices in the store don't include sales tax).

Before the latest iTunes update, I was able to see my account balance (a whopping $9.98), but can no longer see the amount. I've tried logging out and back into iTunes to no avail. Same goes on my iPhone and iPod, and iPad. The system keeps asking for credit card info, but I'm hesitant to do that. (That's why we purchase iTunes gift cards, isn't it ?) !

I'm not sure what you mean. Did you redeem the gift card to your iTunes Store account? If not, just give your brother the gift card and he can redeem it in his own iTunes Store account. If you did redeem the card, then there's no way to transfer the balance from your iTunes Store account to his. He'd have to use your iTunes Store account to make the purchases and sync to his devices.

You need to click on the price, not the downward pointing arrow next to them, that should allow you to buy them - the 'buy all' button that used to be on the wish list screen has, for some reason, been removed from the current version of iTunes, so you can only buy items individually
