What is "Baseline Standard" and "Baseline Optimized" when saving JPEG's?

When saving a JPEG image file in PSE 6 for Mac, I noticed a "Format Options" section of a pop-up window called "JPEG Options." This section gives you three options -- Baseline Standard, Baseline Optimized and Progressive. Baseline Optimized is selected by default.
What are these selections and what do they do to the image file. I'm concerned because I am using a particular JPEG image for color optimizing my monitor and printer. Thanks.

Thes are just different ways that JPEG compression can be done.
> Which choice gives me the best image for printing?
You mean you are sending it out for printing? Go for Baseline Standard [the default].

  • Firefox 18.0.1 consuming excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Mode--when accessing Gmail

Firefox 18.0.1 consumes excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Modes--when accessing Gmail (in Standard Mode). CPU consumption averages around 56% on my dual-CPU, Windows 7 desktop.
The only way to stop this from happening it to open Gmail in "HTML" mode. When I open Gmail in Standard mode, a "Loading..." status shows at the top of the page. After about 30 seconds, a error window pops-up within the Gmail page saying that there is a performance problem and provides the option to load Gmail in a limited, "HTML" mode. Clicking the HTML Mode link solves the issue. I've been using Firefox for years and have never seen this issue until now.

  • Distiller missing text and image links when saving to pdf

Not sure if anyone has experienced this issue before. Basically I create artwork 1up in indesign CS3 and print as a postscript file "print ready settings" then create a pdf through distiller 8.1.2. After this I then imposition the 1up PDF back into indesign (using the pdf as a link and then step and repeat it) then I print the new imposed artwork as postscript file again and distill it as a PDF ready for offset printing.
Most time this process works like a dream, but every now and then distiller doesn't want to process the file correctly and images and sometimes text have dropped off the final imposed PDF file. It doesnt notify me of any problems when distilling. As you can imagine working in the print industry this is VERY SCARY
As i am using a common 1up pdf link the imposition should be correct, (all the pdf linked images should be the same anyway) Is it a memory issue, or a bug in distiller perhaps.
Im running a Mac with OSX 10.4.11 with 2Gig of RAM.
If you would like to see a sample of the issue let me know.
Any help on this would be awesome.

    thanks for the replies,
Working in a pre-press environment we obviously prefer to print from pdf files (as opposed to using supplied native art). As a result I am always receiving pdf files from external clients who have saved their artwork from indesign to pdf format, so Im not sure what the real difference is between me imposing a supplied indesign/pdf files in indesign vs me imposing my own indesign/pdf files in indesign. (aprt from perhaps going through distiller twice)
i can see what your saying though and for years i have been using the cut and paste and step and repeat method but recently changed my workflow for a few reasons
    - I noticed that by printing a 1up pdf and relinking the file back into my indesign imposition the final imposed pdf was lower in size
    - if a client made a change to the artwork after imposing (which always happens) all i had to do was make the change, resave the pdf 1up link again and update the link and it did it for me and saved me from step and repeating all over again,
    - whenever the job was printed again in the future i could use the same procedure, resave as 1up pdf again and update the link.
    - plus i knew that if i was using the one link all my step and repeats would be exactly the same each time (and i didn't have to worry that a graphic that hadn't been selected/grouped correctly and would drop off when step and repeating)
.....and for sure it probably is a slightly longer way to impose a job for print but it saves me half the time on the next print run, and i can use my imposition file as a template for similar jobs also.
I have found the workflow i use works fine, apart from these rare hiccups which i can get around by resaving the pdf again anyway, but what Im really worried about is the times this error presents itself and doesn't notify me that a problem has occurred.

  • Report Errors REP-1051 and REP-1070 when saving

I just created a new report. I'm now getting errors REP-1051 and REP-1070 when I attempt to save the .rdf to my local hard drive (or anywhere else for that matter). Permissions where I try to save it are OK, in fact if I remove the SQL and insert "select * from dual", it saves nicely. Is there a query size limit of which I'm unaware? The SQL runs corrrectly, compiles correctly, etc. I just can't seem to save my work. Thank you in advance.

REP-1051 and REP-1070 What are the messages for these codes?
Which version and OS are you using?
How are you calling your report?

  • Quality Loss when saving Jpeg from Camera Raw

I am try to do some color correction on 400 wedding photos. I open like photos in Camera Raw then synchronize, make a few additional adjustments and then save the photos as psd files. When I save the files, the quality drops dramatically. I can see pixels and jagged edges (looks like steps) on anything curved. The photographer will not give me the RAW files, so I have to work with these high quality jpegs and I would prefer to use camera raw as it is nice and easy to fix many of the photos quickly. How can I save these files so as to not lose quality? Oh, I am on a Mac.
    --K

    Ramón,
now I am quite baffled. For years ago I conducted respective tests and demonstrated, that repeated saving with the same "quality" does not introduce image deterrioration; others did the same tests and came to the same result.
Now, to be sure, I did it again, and the result contradicts my earlier findings. Although the deterrioration is after five consecutive savings practically irrecognizabe without hugely amplifying it, it is there, and that is an issue of principle.
While it is possible, that I and others made some error in those tests, the question is (for me) what causes the difference.
I verified, that the encoding parameters are unchanged. Thus the difference must come from the calculation required to transform between the original pixel values and the encoded values by
    a. the conversion between RGB and YCbCr,
    b. the discrete cosine transform (a variation of Furier transform).
However, any differences resulting from the calculation (iteration, rounding) should be eliminated by the subsequent lossy step, the "quantization" (which is an euphemism for "throwing away most of the data"). Even if there is a difference between the first and second savings, there should not be any between the fourth and fifth savings - but there is.
One explanation could be, that the encoding and decoding functions work with different precision, though this sounds very outlandish.
    Anyway, darn.
Re the encoding parameters: they *have to be* stored in the JPEG file, otherwise the data could not be decoded, except by that program, which knows the parameters. However, JPEG is not designed for human consumption but for computers (this fact makes testing a program, which reads or writes JPEG data a serious PITA). The metadata can be analyzed only by a hex editor, and one has to know the structure of that data.
Re knowing, if the file has to be compressed or not: JPEG is *always* encoded. There are different variants of the encoding method, but there is no "unencoded" version.

  • How can I avoid image 'distortion' when saving jpegs from Photoshop?

I've created a logo with a transparent background and saved as an eps in Illustrator CS3.  To create a jpeg I then opened opened the eps in Photoshop CS3, set the resolution at 300ppi and then saved the image as a jpeg.  The image views ok on screen but when it is inserted into a word document and then printed, the background of the image is 'blurry' - it has small red dots through and you can see also the 'edges' of the image.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the ideas.  Had to have a jpeg at the 'clients' request so I couldn't use the .psd and .png options.
I came across some info stating MS Word doesn't support CMYK jpeg which I did not realise.  So to solve the issue, I ended up opening the eps file as a Smart Object in RGB colour mode at the required resolution in Photoshop CS3 and then saving as jpeg.  The jpeg then printed perfectly after being inputted into a Word document - no blurriness or resolution issues.  I just had to advise the 'client' about the colour issues with RGB vs CMYK and not to use the jpegs for any professional printing.
    Thanks again.

  • What is Adobe Standard and the other camera profiles?

OK, so i'm using my Canon 5d mark II, shooting RAW in the Neutral picture style.  When I load the photo into Lightroom, at the bottom under Camera Calibration the program shows that by default it has loaded the photograph using the Adobe Standard camera profile.  My question is: Is Lightroom taking the end result of the RAW data being shot with the Neutral picture style and loading it into Lightroom where it translates the photograph (RAW + Neutral picture style) using Adobe Standard?  Or is Lightroom taking the photograph (RAW + Neutral picture style) and overriding the Neutral picture style setting in my camera and replacing it with another picture style it calls Adobe Standard?
Another and potentially easier to understand way of asking the question would be if I shot two photographs in RAW, one with the Neutral picture style set in my camera and one with the Landscape setting, and then loaded them into Lightroom using Adobe Standard camera profile, would the two photographs look any different?
Sorry, I am new to digital photography and all adobe programs, and would greatly appreciate the help of a veteran.

The photos would look exactly the same. The picture style that your camera is set on makes no difference to the raw image. That picture style is carried in your raw file as just a tag that tells Canon's raw converter how to interpret the data. Adobe doesn't use that information.
It's up to you to choose the profile that meets your artistic desires.

  • What happens to ratings and colour codes when Aperture is reinstalled?

My iMac has developed all sorts of faults and I think it's time to clean up, wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and apps. My Aperture library is quite large and the photos have all been painstakingly categorised using the colour codes within aperture. I copy the Aperture library to an external hard drive but will I lose all my colour codes, metadata and stuff? I'm sort-of hoping that the newly reinstalled Aperture will import all my photos with all the ratings, album structure and stuff.
    Any ideas or advice?

    Thatblokeoverthere wrote:
Thanks. This is a great start. So, if I move my entire Aperture library to an external drive and then move it back to the iMac hard drive, the new installation should set it all up exactly as before?
As long as the originals in the library are managed, that is located in the library, and not referenced then yes that is all you will need to do. When you have everything set to go the easiest way to have Aperture open this library is to double click on the library, this will cause Aperture to open it and make it the default library.
However as Léonie has alluded to this may not clear up the problems you are having. What is the model of the Mac you are using, how much memory is installed and how big is and how much free space is there on your system drive and what OS version are you running?
Perhaps there are less drastic measures you can take to clear up the problems.

  • What happens with iTunes and your iPhone when you change computers ?

    Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of getting a new computer. I got an iPhone 3GS and I love it. However I was wondering. If I buy a new computer will it be able to let me use my iPhone on iTunes like I did in the past. I know I'll have to transfer my iTunes Library etc.
My question to explain my concern simply is: let's say I keep my iPhone for the next ten years, if each year I get a new computer and throw away the old one, will I be able each time to use it with my new computer ?
Or does it have some sort of link with the PC like Win XP's licence where if you change the motherboard Microsoft won't let you reactivate Windows as it considers it's another PC (with OEM licences).
Sorry for the dumb question but I couldn't find any infos on that.
    Thanks !

"Just move the library and that's it ?"
Move everything that you want to keep to the new computer ( pics, docs, contacts, calendars, etc.).
"What about the 5 computers sync thingy?"
What 5 computer thingy? You can authorize up to five computers to play itunes protected music purchases ( pre-itunes plus). This has nothing to do with ipod/iphones. When you finish moving everything from the old computer to the new, just de-authorize the old one.
When you sync to another computer, it will erase the content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer. This is why you need to move everything to the new computer first.

  • What about web standards and other browsers?

    Dear SAP web team!

    I get really mad.

I know that there is a certain Microsoft affinity at SAP but c'mon guys:

Why not obey web standards or at least use something platform independent?
No offence, but this is really disappointing!
I (and certainly many others too) would really appreciate web standards compliance on sap.com.

  • Illustrator CS4 and CS3 freeze when saving a PDF as an AI file

I'm trying to pull apart a couple of PDFs into layers to import them into After Effects. I do this all the time and it's a pretty standard thing which I haven't had any trouble with before, but for the last couple of days whenever I try to save the PDF as an AI file, the damn thing freezes - I get the washing machine of death (I'm on Vista), the program goes greyed out and I have to restart it, losing all the changes. I've tried the following, none of which seem to make any difference:
    - Saving to a different drive (C as opposed to an external USB drive)
    - Trying to open the PDFs in CS3 rather than CS4
    - Trying a couple of different PDFs
I can't reinstall Illustrator as I'm not at the office until the new year and don't have the disks. The PDFs are small (300k or so) and so it shouldn't be their size making the machine hang, surely? I've attached a sample. Specs are - dual core Dell M6300 laptop, 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, Quadro 1600 graphics.
Any ideas would be very gratefully received....

Sorry I haven't replied in a few days (I'm at my parents' house for Christmas, so not the ideal place to sort out Illustrator problems )
This is REALLY weird. I was wondering whether Illustrator would be able to save PDFs (which are after all basically the same thing as AI files for this purpose) to get around the problem that way. I tried: it saved the thing fine. Next I tried saving what I'd just saved as a PDF, as an AI file. It saved it in a flash without any problems. (This is with the trashed prefs file - I haven't tried reinstating it, yet.) I've just loaded up a 14Mb AI file, and saved it again without trouble.
There's only one thing I can think of that has been changed since the last time I tried this, when Illustrator wasn't working. This is something which was definitely affecting Word 2007: I've deleted a couple of network printers that were on nonexistent IP addresses. (Word wouldn't load anything, even the most basic of docs - it just froze; washing machine of death, grey screen, etc.) The default printer is thus now a Canon USB thing, which isn't plugged in either, but which Windows seems happy to carry on without. Word seemed unable to continue with the network printers installed, as presumably it was trying to contact them and failing. Could Illustrator have been falling into the same trap??
Anyway, whatever the problem, it seems to be working OK now. Thanks both and hope you have a merry Christmas and New Year period.
    Best
    Nick

  • Downloaded attachments change title and add numbers when saved

I've had this problem a very long time ... with my previous G-4 and older Operating Systems.
Using Thunderbird for my e-mail: Someone sends me an attachment titled, e.g., <In Tray Exercise for Sudan.doc>. When I download and save it, the title becomes <In Tray Exercise for#169769.doc>.
This is a serious problem when my organization wants to maintain a file naming system.
How can I stop the file names from changing? Thank you.
By the way, this does not happen when I use Apple Mail.

Then perhaps the place to ask the question is at Thunderbird's tech support. This appears to be something related to it.

  • Draft formaat and attachments vanishing when saved

Ok I have a few mail issues and will be posting them dependability.
Sometimes (as often as every other email) when creating an email and save it to draft and close the email all the formatting and the attachments vanish. It doesn't appear to be a plain-text email, just reset to default black etc. This is inconsistent with any pattern as far as I can tell.
    Message was edited by: osihara

OK. Deleted two of the prefs files and re-setup the accounts and settings utilizing the existing mailboxes etc. and all seems to be OK. As far as I am able to test at this stage. Creating, sending and forwarding emails with attachments and formatting are arriving at various destinations as they should. I will have to wait a week for the next html email that is known to be a problem. It seems to be uploading a bit more smoothly now too.
For now I will consider these issues resolved and bring up any that seem to continue at a later time with more testing in advance.
    Thanks all for your help

  • Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student crashes when saving

I might scream from the frustration this is causing me! Every time I try to save a document in word, it crashes. It used to be every time, and now, if I'm lucky, it will save once in a blue moon. No idea what makes it decide to occasionally. Excel is now
doing the same thing, although I don't believe it was at first. I contacted Microsoft, and was walked through several troubleshooting techniques, none of which resolved the issue. I have obviously googled the problem and tried a few of the solutions there,
again to no avail. This is my last semester of my senior year, and I NEED to have this fixed like yesterday!! Anyone able to help?!

    Hi
Is it crashing on the same file location or on different locations?
Have you tried repairing your office installation? Can you open word or excel in safe mode and test if the same occurs?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
