  • Wiki or Robohelp - What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp?

What are the benefits of using a wiki vs publishing projects in robohelp? I currently use RH9/RH9 Server and  publish multiple SSL.  The company is looking to stop using Robohelp and replace our online help authoring tool  (RH) with a wiki. Are there any benefits of going to a wiki environment.  What RH features/functions that I have today will i not have by having IT import our robohelp files into a wiki?
I know that a wiki is not an authoring tool, but someone must think it is and we'll still have all the functionality of publishing multiple SSLs, reports, etc once in the wiki environment.  Any comments - is this the best route?

    Hi,
There are many differences. The idea of a wiki is to allow anyone to view and/or edit the content. Depending on the wiki system, you can set access control for viewing and editing.
Wiki's typically have simple syntax (html in a wiki is a serious security risk), allow image embedding, links and attachments. You will need to learn the specific syntax (rather easy, but also very limited).
What will you lose? This depends on the features available in the wiki system as well as the available plugins. A few downsides:
    - WYSIWYG editor limited, if at all.
    - No snippets
    - No variables
    - Dropdowns (may be possible through plugins)
    - Index
    - Styling based on css classes (mostly supported through HTML which is a security concern)
    - Only one version of your support system: multiple versions require multiple installations/configurations.
    - No searching in attachments.
    - No CBT (Though some wiki's allow comments in the wiki code)
    - No Word/FrameMaker import.
    - You have to create your own CSH calls.
    On the upside:
    - Most wiki systems are free, even for commercial use.
    - The syntax is quite simple, allowing you to quickly write text.
    - Wiki's typically offer good support for syntax highlighting.
    - They are very easy to set up.
    - Most wiki's have plugins to enable comments.
The greatest downside in my opinion is that you always have the latest version of all files. Whenever you update a page, everyone immediately has the latest version. And if you want to create help for a feature that isn't released yet, you will have to use access control to make sure not everyone sees the (unfinished) help for the unreleased feature. With RoboHelp you have a single source that creates a one way output.
We use both RoboHelp and wiki's: RoboHelp for customer help and wiki internally to share knowledge. And sharing knowledge is what wiki's are designed for.

  • What Program Should I use to create motion vector intro?

    Hello,
I am creating an intro to a series I am making for a client. I will be animating vector images that I have created in Illustrator by saving them as ".ai" files. In the past I have created a similar project using Premiere Pro CS6 using ".png" files in hopes of saving time and processing power.(However, the final product's quality was not where it should have been.) Would it be more beneficial to create this project in After Effects CS6? What are the benefits of using vector images in After Effects rather than Premiere? Are they any benefits? Also if you have any experience creating animation in these programs I would love to hear any advice seeing that I am new to this type of work.
    Thanks,
    Alex

What is the final destination of your animation, are you producing this to go on a DVD, or a website. After Effects is superior to Premiere in animation capabilities of vector objects (which really turn into bitmpaped objects for the final rendering no matter what program you use) , but Premiere is quicker for splicing videos together and putting transitions in between them.
If the final quality is not where it should have been your settings were not correct. My advice is to  use an experienced professional to do this job for you, until you learn more about quality control for animation.

  • How to use Dashboard as a cut & paste software

    Hi !
I´ve hard to understand the function of "Dashboard" - I thought that the software could be a help for me to cut/copy pictures on websites for an example - I thought that I could mark an area on a site, copy the are and save it to iPhoto or copy it to Pager or other programs but it didn´t work that way. So now I´m looking forward to get an introduction in "how to use Dashboard" from someone who knows more about Mac and the programs than I do.
    Best regards / Marlene

Dashboard exists to display the various widgets such as clocks, weather or Stock Market info, dictionary, etc.etc.
You don't need it for what you want to do. Most pictures on websites can be saved simply by dragging them to the Desktop - try it with the picture on the right. Otherwise, hit command-shift-4 and click drag the mouse over the area you want to save: an image will be saved to your Desktop.

  • What is the exact use of Sequence container

    Hi all,
I am intermediate in SSIS package,i am not understanding what is the exact use of Sequence container ?
I am preparing for interview(3 years exp), if experts dont mind can you pls share some tips and questions to clear the interview ?
     pls
    thanks

    Hi SelvakumarSubramaniam,
This blog delivers a good summary of the benefits we can get by using Sequence Container:
Easier debugging by allowing you to disable groups of tasks to focus package debugging on one subset of the package control flow.
Managing multiple tasks in one location by setting properties on a Sequence Container instead of setting properties on the individual tasks.
Provides scope for variables that a group of related tasks and containers use.
Create a transaction around all the components inside the container.

  • Can we change filter column values in a union query using Dashboard prompt

    Hi,
I have a requirement in which have to draw a chart report for last six months?.
When i query against database, my query got different where clause for open month and close month.
Say for july month bar, it got close month as july and open month as july, june, may. Like this, for june month bar, it has to have close month as june and open month as june, may, april. like this, i created six union queries using repository variable.
Want to give control using dashboard prompt for close month and open month?
    my query look like this.
    select close month1, fact1 from table1
where close month = july and open month in (july, june, may)
    UNION
    select close month2, fact2 from table1
where close month = june and open month in (june, may, april)
    UNION
    select close month3, fact3 from table1
where close month = may and open month in (may, april, march)
    UNION
    select close month4, fact4 from table1
where close month = april and open month in (april, march, february)
    UNION
    select close month5, fact5 from table1
where close month = march and open month in (march, february, january)
    UNION
    select close month6, fact6 from table1
where close month = february and open month in (february, january, december)
    Welcome your suggestions on this?.
    Thanks

    Hi Karol,
Yes the prompt is working fine when i put this following method under the "Button" Component.
    APPLICATION.openPromptDialog(800, 600);
Somehow the when i use the "Input Field" and use the "Button" Component and write this following logic inside it i don't see the prompt is not taking the values what i am entering in input field i assume that its issue with data-source not getting refreshed.
    Variable=INPUTFIELD_1.getValue();
    APPLICATION.setVariableValue("PercentageIncrease",Variable);
    Thanks,

Action     Increase the size of the SGA by setting the parameter "sga_target" to 5120 M.One of the biggest impact of indexes (if they fit in the scenario) is in reducing the IO (by avoiding full table scans). Reduced IO means faster system. Absence of indexes would mean that you read lots of data into the memory [buffer cache] and data would flush out quickly too (to make space for the new data), resulting in more IO. So having indexes in place means you only read as much amount of data as required and frequently accessed data stays in the memory.
Kinda incomplete answer...Lets wait for other experts' comments :)

  • [SOLVED] Benefits of Using ABS

I really like the idea of ABS, and the ports-like functionality which is built into Arch Linux, but my question was, is there any improved functionality to using ABS? Why would one choose to use it over just installing the binary packages? Not trying to be argumentative, but just trying to understand what its intended purpose is? Can it be used to decide how programs are compiled, like the USE-flags in Gentoo? I'm just wondering what benefits one gets to using it.
EDIT: And yes, I have read the wiki page on ABS, but being new I don't really understand how one would implement some of those functions. I'm wondering if anyone uses ABS to install packages rather than installing the binaries as a general rule.

The binary packages that most of us use are what makes Archlinux a "linux distro". It's what almost everyone should use.
The availability of those build scripts and the Arch Build System are what make Archlinux a meta-distribution.  Using Arch as a meta-distribution is what make it possible to use Archlinux as the basis for building your own distro.  A good example would be the work that chenxiaolong and others are doing to make a Unity distro based on Arch.  Just be warned that the Arch developers do not have time to hand hold people who are trying to "compile from abs" just for the hell of it.  Sometimes packages don't compile from ABS!  The Arch PKGBUILD is then a starting point; most of the work is done but getting it to actually compile can be frustrating.  The same thing happens in Gentoo (then it's REALLY frustrating because you can't install it if you can't compile it -- there is no binary package provided by some nice overworked guy like we have in Archlinux).
If you want to build your own distro, or just a customized version of some package, then use ABS.
I too have measured significant perfomance gain by compiling everything from abs with custom cflags but that is not why I do it; I do it to have control to design my own distro, usually just to strip out unwanted dependencies and to make sure that I really can re-build my complete system from source code if archlinux.org should disappear from the net.
I think that it's nice to know that when you use Arch (binary packages) the potential is there to take even more control in the future as you learn more and are no longer a noob.

  • Benefits of using vendor partner function

    Hello Experts:
I understand the general use of vendor partner function. But what are the benefits of using vendor partner function? Is it for ease of reporting? Is there a functionality down the line that will not be possible if a vendor partner function is not used?
The reasoning for this question is, I am at a client that has the general association of vendor and remit to addresses. However, they also have a scenario where they have one main vendor, but there are 30+ remit to addresses. These remit to addresses are dependent on the plant that placed the order. As an example, the vendor is AT&T, but the plant that uses the service in Caifornia sends the check to a remit to address in Calif. The plant in Arizona, sends their check to another AT&T remit to address in AZ.
My current solution is, for the client to create the partner function that are more straight forward, one main vendor and one remit to address. As for the vendors that have multiple remit to addresses, i am opting out not to create the partner function. Which is why I am asking if there is an issue not using vendor partner function.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

It is certainly possible to work without partner functions in SAP.
It is almost impossible  to work without partner functions in SAP if you do business with global players and need some comfort for your processes.
It is impossible to work without partner functions if oyu have to do Intrastat reporting with SAP and your goods supplier is located in a different EU country than your vendor.
In your special case with AT&T without partner functions, you would enter the invoice to your main vendor, the payment run then creates a cheque to your main vendor (and you then use Microsoft word to create a lable with the remit to address that you stick over the SAP printed address on the cheque ..... how does Finance department know that it has to create this lable?.....how will you be able to trace who got the cheque? ..........this is not a good practice)
Especially in this case the partner funtions gives the real benefit.
partner funtions are not for ease of reporting, as You cannot run analyses for any of the other partner roles supplied in the standard system.
if you use invoicing party, then  the invoicing partyu2019s account will be charged instead of the vendoru2019s.

  • Benefits of using RMAN

I've not used RMAN before and am still kind of new to Oracle and I have a question about using RMAN.
We currently have all our databases on SAN and NAS and everynight they are put into hot backup mode and the SAN and NAS take snapshots of them.
We also do a full export everynight.
Given this setup what if any benefits would I see in replacing either or both methods with RMAN backups ?
    Thanks.

I advice you to refer to a [documentation |http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/toc.htm] and to an excellent book " [RMAN Recipes for Oracle Database 11g : A Problem-Solution Approach|http://www.amazon.com/RMAN-Recipes-Oracle-Database-Problem-Solution/dp/1590598512] "
Here's some RMAN benefits from that book :
Here’s a brief description of the important benefits of using RMAN instead of usermanaged backup and recovery techniques:
    * You can take advantage of the powerful Data Recovery Advisor feature, which enables you to easily diagnose and repair data failures and corruption (Chapter 20 discusses the Data Recovery Advisor).
    * There are simpler backup and recovery commands.
    * It automatically manages the backup files without DBA intervention.
    * It automatically deletes unnecessary backup datafiles and archived redo log files both from disk and tape.
    * It provides you with detailed reporting of backup actions.
    * It provides considerable help in duplicating a database or creating a standby database.
    * It lets you test whether you can recover your database, without actually restoring data.
    * It lets you verify that available backups are usable for recovery.
    * It lets you make incremental backups, which isn’t possible by any other means of backup.
    * It lets you perform database duplication without backups by using the network-enabled database duplication feature, also known as active duplication.
    * It automatically detects corrupt data blocks during backups, with the corruption relevant information recorded in the V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION view.
    * When only a few data blocks are corrupted, you can recover at the data block level, instead of recovering an entire datafile.
    * You can take advantage of the unused block compression feature, wherein RMAN skips unused data blocks during a backup.
    * Only RMAN provides the ability to perform encrypted backups.
    * You can use RMAN with a variety of third-party storage systems.
    * You can use a powerful yet easy-to-use scripting language, which lets you write custom
    backup and recovery scripts quickly

  • Benefits of using an RSL in an AIR application?

I understand the general benefits of using a RSL in a web-based application.  That is, when a RSL is not merged into the code, it provides a quicker download.  Also, a RSL can be edited without recompiling the main application.  I am correct so far?
But my main question is what benefits does a RSL serve when it is used in an AIR application?  The RSL would be downloaded when they initiate the AIR installer, so the “quick” download benefit wouldn’t be available.  The only benefit I see, and please correct me if you see any other, is if a developer is using a RSL instead of directly embedding an asset into the code to provide a quicker compile time, eg:
    <mx:Button label="Icon Button" icon="@Embed(source='c:/myapp/assets/logo.gif')"/>

ArchWiki wrote:Obviously, an external journal is only effective if the journal and its file system exists on separate physical devices.
That's the problem, I don't know if there's any benefit to having a separate journal partition on the same device, which all the other partitions use. Would localizing journal writes to one partition improve performance, or just create a single-point-of-failure hazard?

  • What encode setting are used when sending to Encore from Premiere?

    Hi All,
I have a an HDV 1440x1080 30p video and sequence in Premiere CS4. If I export it to AME, i can set the output format and presets to whatever i want. In my case, I set AME to Format: "MPEG2-DVD" and Preset: "NTSC Progressive Widescreen High Quality" and leave the other settings alone.
However, when I send the sequence via Dynamic Link from Premiere CS4 to Encoder and press on the build button, what default settings is Encore CS4 using to create the DVD?
I am assuming that i can bring up "Export Settings" in Encore prior to building to alter the default export settings and in my case i would use the Encore Export Settings:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Preset: Progressive High Quality 7Mb VBR 2 Pass
and leave the other Encore export settings alone.
BTW, i think its interesting that the default export settings for MPEG2-DVD, Progressive (Standard and Widescreen) High Quality in AME from both Premiere and Encore have different basic video, bitrate and GOP settings.

The 'Automatic' transcoding setting is dynamic - it changes whenever you add or subtract from the project. One of the main benefits of using it is that Encore will automatically calculate the bit budget for your disc.
But if it's somehow not working out, you need to reconsider using it.
Normally, I do my own bit budget (there are several online bit budgeting apps out there). But then, I'm a 'manual' kinda guy...

  • Newbie Question: Benefits of Using Book Document?

I have a novel in MS Word. I've seen that I can get greatly improved typography if I import it to InDesign.
I notice that InDesign has a Book document. I can put each chapter of my novel into individual .indd files, and then include each of these files in the Book document. So far so good.
My novel is only 266 pages long, including front and back matter. Would it be easier to just use one single .indd file?
In other words, what are the benefits of using the Book document?
Thanks very much in advance to all for any info.

Arïel's advice is spot-on.  I am adding some comments only for the benefit of the people who might find this thread in the future.
It's occasionally to my advantage to share out chapter files of a long doc in a Book file to a number of InDesign operators, so we can complete a large project collaboratively in a very short amount of time. Each time I look at myself in the mirror and say, "Would I rather use a Book file, or pull an all-nighter and do the whole thing myself?" I feel I've been pretty lucky, in that only once has a team-effort Book file project blown up in my face and required the all-nighter anyways - I spent the night rebuilding the Book file over and over again, trying to get it to paginate correctly.
To avoid any potential sluggishness, though, my only recommendation
would be to make sure that each chapter is in it's own story. Try to
avoid having the entire book threaded as a single, long, 200-page story
and you'll be alright. In fact, on my current computer (i5 with 8 GB
RAM) even that is no longer an issue.
This is absolutely true of your book, Vik. I've handled a variety of handbooks, manuals, and other kinds of document that had complicated formatting (tables and charts and dozens of text frames with variables and xrefs and No Break and etc.) at the end of the book - in those cases it was to my advantage to keep that complicated stuff in a separate story so that when I was re-ragging chapter 1, the stuff in Appendix B wasn't constantly re-flowing and bogging down my machine. But a novel? Any decent machine with specs like Ariel's could handle a longer story than that.
Oh, and I don't recall ever having an InDesign file go bad on me. Maybe I'm just lucky
Yup, you're lucky. OTOH, I bet that you don't have very many clients who revise their books 4x per year, who have been using the same file since PageMaker 5.0.
