What is best connection setup for Airport Extreme?

I currently have the following configuration/setup:
Cable Modem > AEBS > 5-port switch.
Since all of my home networking is currently passing through my AEBS, I was wondering if I should setup as follows:
Cable Modem > 5-port switch > AEBS
Suggestions comments appreciated.

Cable Modem > 5-port switch > AEBS
No, if your cable modem is a simple modem.
No, even if your modem is a modem/router.....if.....you have a Gigabit Ethernet switch.....and..... you want to take advantage of the Gigabit Ethernet speeds of the Time Capsule

  • Where can I see what devices are connected to my Airport Extreme?

I just switched from a Belkin wireless-g router to the Airport Extreme (802.11n). With my Belkin router, when I entered the address "192.168.2.1", I was taken to a menu where, among other things, I could view all connected devices. How do I do that with my new Airport Extreme? Thanks!

Hi David, welcome to the discussions!
You will have to dig a bit for the info, but it is there.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on Manual Setup near the bottom of the pane
Click on the gear shaped Advanced icon at top of the window.
    Click on Logs and Statistics
Then click Wireless Clients or DHCP Clients to see who is connected.

  • Connect help for Airport Extreme?

I have an iBook G4 and an iMac OS X. Both are running Tiger 10.4.6. I have the Airport Extreme. All was well. Now my airport is not working. I have to wire the iBook directly into the modem. The other computer is not receiving any wireless connection. The modem has a full signal. The computers recognize the signal strength from the airport. Lots of bars and jensenfamily is "checked" in the Internet Connect icon. But, no connection. The airport has 3 white dots. The middle one is on - I guess that is the power indicator? When I plug the modem to the airport the two side lights blink - mostly, but the computers do not receive the signal. It seems as tho everything is working, but just not making the final connection to the computers. Help. I am just a mom who checks email and helps with book reports, etc. I am not familiar with a lot of technical lingo - so if you can help, be gentle, please.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Welcome to the discussions,
    Try a system reset.
    Shut off your computers.
DO NOT CHANGE ANY SETTING IF EVERYTHING WORKED BEFORE>
Now pull the Power Adapter from the back of your Internet Service Providers Modem.
Now Pull the Power Adapter from your Airport.
Next you must wait a minimum of 5 minutes and then in this exact order.
Plug in the Power Adapter to your ISP's Modem and you must wait until it reacquires the signal. (Normally a minute)
Next you can do the same with your Airport Plug back in the Power Adapter, again you must wait for it to re-acquire the signal. Now you can restart your computers and you should be good.
    Cheers Don

  • Best Cable Modem for Airport Extreme 802.11ac ?

I own an Airport Extreme 802.11ac.  I am preparing to purchase a cable modem.  I have pretty well selected a - Cisco Model DPC3010 and was wondering if anyone had experience marrying the two?
NOTE:  I have heard that though the Motorola Surfboard version (ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0) has been tested with the AE, the modem still drops connections a lot with TWC.  Has anyone had similar experiences using that modem?

ISP:  I am working with TimeWarnerCable in Clarksburg WV area.
CISCO & TWC:  I have already confirmed that the Cicsco router is usable on their network - confirmed through TWC tech support and Amazon product reviews.  This is true despite the router not listed on TWC's external and internal approved lists. (The Tech escalated to confirm Amazon review statements that the device could be connected).
CISCO & AE: I am just curious if someone else out there has experience using it with their AE - no matter who is their ISP. Any hiccups?  Any thing to watch for?   (Thanks in advance)
Note:  the Motorola device IS on the TWC approved list, but there are too many reports of frequent dropped internet connections.

  • What hardware do i need for airport extreme

I have a macbook pro (with intel) and an iMac (with intel); i just ordered an airport extreme base-station. I currently have the old airport which has been working fine but i thought i'd upgrade to something faster. Do i also need to buy an airport extreme card for my computers in order to be able to use the new airport extreme base station? Can i simply download the software that apple is selling for 1.99 to upgrade the capacity my computers already have? I can't find the answer to this anywhere so i'd appreciate some assistance.

You can't upgrade older Macs (including the older Core Duo Intel Macs) though these will still work with the new Airport Extreme just not at n speeds.
The n enabler software for Core 2 Duo Macs does not need to be purchased/downloaded as it comes free with the new Airport Extreme base station.
The Macs which can use the n enabler software are listed on this page.
    http://www.apple.com/wireless/80211/
    Does my Mac support 802.11n?
These Mac computers support 802.11n in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station using the included enabler software:
iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme card option

  • Best Mounting Location For AirPort Extreme 802.11ac

    Hello,
I have used various models of the AirPort Extreme over the years and always mounted them at the highest peak of the ceiling in my home. It was always stated that they transmitted in roughly 360 degrees. Now I just upgraded to an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac model and have a third-party accessory mount that is metal for the first time (see attached picture). So, this changes the game somewhat. If this AirPort model also transmits in all directions, then that might mean I need to mount it with the metal mount to the ceiling or even inverted. Of course, just an initial test with this mount on the unit and tacked on the wall upright/horizontally with duct tape shows great reception IN the whole home. I just want to get the most efficient operation with 12 acres of land OUTSIDE. HA!
So, any comment on this from those much smarter than I?
    Peace,
    Dr. Z.

I think you are over analysing..
Mount it at the same height as the receiver.. more or less. In a convenient spot.. where you can run the cables easily.
I doubt the stand will matter a lot.. and I would not turn it upside down.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPort+Extreme+A1521+Teardown/15044
From this picture the antennas are at the extreme top of the unit.. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/hUjlbvRWjoqQLDy6.huge
And I mean right up the top. so a piece of metal around that area of the TC will do nothing at all.

Sorry you didn't get an answer faster but you have to know this is a peer to peer forum. it is users helping other users so not always the quickest way. First off, can you change your ISP router to modem only mode? It is best that way as you will get conflicts such as what you are seeing when there are two routers in the same link. You are getting the ISP router when you enter 192.168.1.1 because that is its address on the LAN side. It appears that your router is getting set to a 10.x IP because of the setup. You have two routers trying to work with DHCP so that is also an issue. If you can change the ISP router to modem only mode then once it is up disconnect it from the router and do a factory reset on your router and make sure it has the IP of 192.168.1.1 and you will then be able to make any changes you need to. the default login is password of admin and leave the user blank.

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • How to setup the Airport Extreme for PSP?

Can anyone tell me how to setup the Airport Extreme for PSP? I have been searching the Discussions but none of the posting seems to explain detail enough. A step by step guide would be very appreciated. Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Sorry, I forgot to mention a few points:
    1) I don't have the Airport Extreme base station;
    2) My PowerBook is connect to the internet thru wired connection with the Built-in Ethernet;
    3) The Airport is turned on, but my PSP's scan cannot locate the PowerBook at all (while it find someone else's network)
So, I wonder if I can just connect my PSP to the built-in Airport in the PowerBook directly. So that I can have internet access on my PSP.

  • Setup wired airport extreme (A1408) as repeater for TC (A1470)

How do I setup an airport extreme (A1408) as a wired repeater for TC (A1470)?

Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme for 8-10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the TC to the WAN "O" port on the Extreme
Open up Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utilty
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Extreme
The setup wizard will open up automatically and take a minute to suggest that the Extreme will be configured to extend the TC network.
Type in a device name that you want to assign to the Extreme and click Next
The utility will setup everything for you. Watch the screen closely to confirm that the Extreme is being configured to extend using Ethernet.  When you see the Setup Complete message, click Done.

  • We have an old titanium PowerBook that will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.

We have an old titanium PowerBook that will easily connect to any WiFi cafe or hotel network, but will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.
When the Apple Tec. installed our network for our 3 iMAXs, he couldn't it to connect either. Of course our two iPads have no trouble connecting.
We are also having trouble getting it to upgrade from OS 10.5.8 to 10.6, even though I have a Snow Leopard up date family pack.

What is your Wireless Security setting on the network?  Since you are running Leopard, I may not have the desired answer, but some of the Airport-equipped laptops, like the TiBooks, are said not to support all of the settings.  I have an AE network which supports b and g, with "WPA2 Personal" settings and the TiBooks connect with that one OK with 811.b Airport.
Oh, and no way to upgrade beyond 10.5.8 Leopard for PPC machines like the Titanium G4 Powerbooks, as 10.6 and above require Intel processors.
EDIT: I didn't notice this, but the TiBooks may be connecting with WPA encryption on my network, as I have the following display on my settings:
