What is best ebook reader to use alonside a mac?

Hi
Thinking of getting an ebook reader, like the Sony Reader or the like but dont know which one to get that will work well with my mac. The connect software that comes with the reader is only suitable with windows. I think I can use the general features using memory cards etc but Id like something that works well. Any thoughts?

whats the best msn messenger to use on the mac + how do you use ichat ??? iv no idea how that works !!! never got a aol account or what ever !! only have msn + gmail

I tried a few different ones, adium was alright, but i prefer just the regular msn for mac. It was weird when I first switched over, but now I like it better than msn for windows. It has a few less options, but nothing is missing that I frequently used. The best messenger for you probably depends on what features you want to have.

  • Whats the best audio interface to use w/new Imac?

Hey now! I;ve just bought a brand new Imac 20"
and I'm wondering whats the best Audio interface to use w/ garageband? Also firewire or USB. I want record guitar, bass, vocals, etc.. thanks!

You may want to ask this question in the GarageBand forums.
USB is cheaper but Firewire is generally better.
PreSonus is a good brand and I think they are class compliant, so no driver needed - plug and play.
M-Audio is another popular brand. Sometimes may have driver issues, though.
But a lot depends on your budget and what your needs are. How many input will you need, etc?
If just for solo recording then the PreSonus Inspire would be good. For a full band their FP10 (Firebox) is great.
Check out this site to get you started (lots of great GB info too):

Also check Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend for interfaces.

Not quite. Downloading the current version of NeoOffice is definitely not free (downloading the previous version is). The developers of NeoOffice (the most Mac-like of the StarOffice descendants) make a distinction between the application itself (which is free) and downloading it, for which they require what they are pleased to call a "donation" (since it's mandatory, I would call it a fee).

Would that include the report on the state of the US economy -- you know, the one President Obama asked you to deliver to the White House no later than 7AM on January 4? The one in two columns, with numbered paragraphs, table of contents, footnotes, mathematical formulae, 40 figures, 60 charts, quotations in Arabic, Japanese, and classical Greek, and 15 pages of references in APA style?
Grant Bennet-Alder is right -- "the real answer depends on what work you expect to do with it, and with whom you expect to do this work". There are dozens of word processors for Mac, from the venerable Word to the no less venerable Tex-Edit+. It would pointless to start listing them all, when many of them might be either too little or too much for your needs.

  • HT1338 What anti-virus software shall I use for my Mac OS X 10.6.8?

What anti-virus software shall I use for my Mac OS X 10.6.8?

There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • Need some input for the best laser printer to use on a Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro and am now, a year later, looking for a laser printer. I do not want an ink jet as I do not print enough paper and the jets tend to clog up and the ink dry out, hence the laser.
I have looked at several different ones, and read the online reviews. Many of them have problems with the drivers for a Mac. I ordered an HP Laserjet P1006 (but have not actually bought it yet) since it was on sale.
Anyone have experience with this printer? What worked best for you - and by this I mean what printer will work out of the box without having to go online and download drivers, etc.?
    Thanks for your help.

You might do better using the review information from CNET.com or Macworld.com. I find examining both user reviews and editor choices from the former quite helpful when buying new equipment.
Personally, I've used HP printers in the past but that's some time back. I have an older HP PhotoSmart printer that has been fine. I also have a Lexmark 510n that I'm happy with, but it's been replaced by a newer model I believe. Works quite well and was OS X compatible out of the box after downloading the driver. Apple has since released a whole new pack of Lexmark drivers for OS X. I also have an old TekTronix laser printer that was quite good in its day. Both laser printers are color.
I tend to avoid the low-end printers. Cheap is cheap. If there's a $100 laser printer and a $500 one I'd go with the $500 model all things being equal. They generally cost more because they are better built and have better features. I also would prefer models with Ethernet support. I would prefer this to any USB printer or wireless printer - more likely to be less trouble and it isn't necessary to share an Ethernet printer if you have more than one computer on your network.

  • Whats the best Audio Interface to use with Logic and MacBook Pro?

I currently own a Line 6 Pod X3 Pro and although its much better than the Eleven Rack (what an overrated piece of junk in a pretty candy coating, more fizz than club soda and still no balls. Some say it just needs a cheap overdrive box to do the trick. I say how can it possibly be worth a Grand if a cheap added piece of equiptment is needed to improve the sound?) It's still not exactly top notch, to say the least.
I was really considering the SSL (Solid State Logic) XLogic Alpha-Link MADI, a 24 channel high-end AD/DA Converter. It's somewhat pricy, but you can't possibly find a bigger bang for your buck, however I don't really need that many channels. I'm really going for quality over quantity, but I'll pay for the extra inputs if there's no way around getting top of the line otherwise.

Thanks but I already figured it out, or rather B&H did for me. Firstly, to use the SSL with a DAW you'll need to use the Extreme "PCIe card" which neither notebooks or iMacs accomodate. So unless I want to dish out an additional $1,500 for an RME laptop interface (with built in PCIe card) for this interface i'm shoot out of luck, boo! I was really looking foreward to that set up.
However, to answer my own question (and save a couple hundred bucks) you simply can't beat Apogee's Ensemble, which is built specifically for Mac. Much simpler - no drivers needed, and I actually understand the specs, 16 channels, and 4 of which even have transparent mic preamps. And its only $200 more than the Rosetta (only 2 channels, and nothing but converters - no preamps).
The main thing I also wanted was to have as least components as possible going into Logic. I already passed my "gear collecting phase," and the more I added the worst it sounded. I was already forewarned of such results, but when your a newbe like I was I guess you have to find out for yourself. So I'll be getting rid of my Line 6 POD X3 Pro; dbx 1066; Presonus Eureka; Aphex 204; and 8821 Sonic Maximizer ( I already got rid of the 11-Rack, good riddence!
And replacing them all with an Avalon 737 - anything that sounds that good over YouTube has gotta kill - and the guy from B&H said "thats one SWEET set up!" Of course every body knows Apogee and Avalon are no brainers (if you've got the patience to save up for the good stuff) but I'm more of a best kept secret type of guy (or try to be) however this time I don't mind conforming. Taylored quality and simplicity...Perfect...what more can a guy (or girl) ask for (now if I can only get my hands on some Vienna Symphonic Orchestra Software to pick up the slack where Logic is lacking.)
I just want to stop with the learning every new gadget nonesense already and get back to being a musician again.
PS How do I switch this topic to the Logic forum? I'm sure it will be more helpful to others there.

  • Whats the best portable drive for use with iMovie?

I use iMovie on my macbook on my long commute to and from work. I have read that the best solution is to edit movies on an external drive and not the one on the mac.
What is the minimum drive speed (rpm) and minimum transfer (firewire 400 ? usb 2?) for this to work.
All the drives on the online apple store talk about transfering documents, photos and using them as backup devices and I am trying to be cautious about what I buy given a limited budget.
For example is the "Iomega 160GB Portable Hard Drive with Dual Interface" suitable ?
    All advice gratefully received, thanks

    I haven't seen that point.
I worked on my old iMac using just the hard drive for a while. Performance is not the issue, but space can be, which is why I moved to an external drive.
Drive performance is complicated. If you have enough memory, your internal drive will probably have better performance than an external drive. The SATA bus is a lot faster than the FireWire or USB buses.
On the other hand, if you are memory constrained and are using other i/o intensive applications at the same time, the external may perform better. You definitely want to avoid excessive swapping of your virtual memory while using iMovie or anything else. (and this is best handled by having sufficient RAM. I have 2GB.
In iMovie 08, once you have your video imported into an event, you can edit away, because iMovie is just writing pointers in the project file to the source files in the EVENT. Disk performance is more critical on import (front end) and sharing or rendering (back-end), but internal drives are more than up to this task.
Space is the issue. If you are shooting high definition footage, you can get event files of 20GB to 40GB+. That can eat up a laptop real quick.

  • What is best hard drive to use with Time Machine?

I was using a WD Passport 2TB external drive for my Time Machine backup for iMac which has a 3TB drive.  The drive is almost 1 year old and only bought it to for backing up with Time Machine.  The drive failed when I tried to restore a iPhoto database to my iMac on Sunday. Today on Tuesday evening. Time Machine said it could not perform a successful back up due to Disk Failure. I ran the disk utility and it gave me error. I had to erase and reformat the drive.
I was able to erase and reformat the drive and ran the disk utlity again. And it says it is working fine. I dont plan to use these portable drives for backing.
I think its time to get a better Hard Drive for my Time Machine backups. Any suggestions?

Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:

Hi (from France) and thanks in advance.
I want to activate firewall but don't know which setting to choose for the right mix of security/ease of use. My Imac connected by ethernet to Dartybox (router) and sharing internet access with my wife's Macbook pro via wifi .

    Take a look at: IceFloor
IceFloor is not a firewall. Your Mac already features three built-in firewalls:
    • ALF
    • PF
    • IPFW
ALF is an application firewall, while both PF and IPFW are network firewalls.
ALF can be configured using System Preferences “Security” pane.
PF and IPFW do not have a default graphic interface shipped with OS X, so they can be configured only using the shell terminal. Using the terminal is the favourite choice by most system administrators.
Since Mac OS X 10.7 IPFW has been deprecated. PF is the new default OS X network firewall. To configure PF without using the shell terminal we must use a graphic interface (frontend) from third party software makers.
IceFloor is a graphic frontend for PF.
It features a lot of advanced tools and options that will let you set up a very complex PF ruleset.
IceFloor needs OS X 10.7 or newer.
Bandwidth management with PF/Dummynet is supported on OS X 10.8 and newer.
PF ruleset created with IceFloor 2.0 has been tested on:
    OS X 10.7 OS X 10.8 OS X 10.9 iOS 5
    iOS 6 FreeBSD 9 OpenBSD 4.3
We developed also a limited version of IceFloor named PFLists.
PFLists is a free and open source basic PF frontend with the same requirements as IceFloor 2.
