What is best method to discard a used Apple Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule which became defective.  How should I discard this piece of equipment?  Is there any security issue regarding data on the hard drive?

The files on the hard disk are sadly still accessible to a knowledge person..
I would open the TC.. remove the hard disk. See https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Then you can plug the hard disk into a USB hard drive cradle you can obtain from any large computer store for a few dollars or millions on ebay.. and plug it into your computer and wipe it. You can then put the HDD back into the TC and sell it as broken on ebay.. there is plenty of demand for broken ones for parts.
If all of that seems over the top.. take it to your apple store and ask for it to be disposed of. Apple should be able to offer a secure disposal service. Since the failure of the device is their fault.. and the lack of ability to remove the hard disk is also a design flaw.. well it is easy enough for them to dispose of properly.
If it is a Gen1 or Gen2 .. you can buy a replacement power supply on ebay for $40 or so and fix it up .. then you can sell it off working.
See my website for more info on how to repair.

  • Help ReadyNAS NV+ as FTP server using Apple Time Capsule

I am setting this up for somebody else. I followed http://www.readynas.com/?p=1682 to configure the ReadyNAS RND4000 NV+ and then followed http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf starting on page 54 to limited success. At times I could log into the FTP server and it would Auth, but then timeout. Swapped it out with my Netgear WNR2000 and configured it and it works great. What am I missing on the Apple Time Capsule that only took me 5min to do on the WNR2000? Called Apple Care and they said they could not help since they do not provide phone support for FTP. I have spent nearly 6hrs on this and all I know is that I had it working within 5min using my WNR2000, but they really want to use their Time Capsule and I just can not get it to work.

FTP is a lot trickier than it looks and unfortunately opening ports even in a fixed range as you are doing on the readynas, (following that post you referenced). Did you open 5000-5020 for FTP?
As an odd co-incidence.. the apple utility uses port 5009 to access the TC.. when you forwarded ports in the area of the Apple Utility you may well have wreaked something. Try using different port range above 10,000.
I can understand why the Apple people would not talk to you.. they have deliberately left out ftp as a method of access to the TC.. but I have a suspicion that something else even inside it might be running ftp.. in which case when you port forward you might be messing up the internals. Or the internals are messing with you. To say nothing of the access to the internal server which could be blocked from remote access.. even if you forward the port. Apple phone support workers will have no idea about this stuff.
My recommendation for a windows network.. use a router that has normal http access. Keep the TC in the network bridged. You can get Netgear router cheap.
My other comment is, ftp has no security other than password.. it is open to man in middle attacks because passwords are sent in the clear. It is not really a great method of remote access unless you have a walled off ftp store that you don't care if others access. If you want to buy another router, get something that does vpn and use vpn to access the network.
BTW Apple do break things like vpn, ftp, telnet in some versions of their firmware.. this is a well known issue and happens across all the apple routers.. since Apple does not use those ports themselves they don't seem to give any great deal of attention to bug catching.. if you run apple network with apple products you won't need it.
    eg
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1435270?start=0&tstart=0
Do a google search for time capsule or airport (fundamentally the same thing).
I stick to my recommendation.. keep the TC as a bridged device... just buy another router.

  • What is the most reliable modem for my Apple Time Capsule.

ooking at getting a new modem because my Router/Gateway (Arris DG960) is not translating my port forwarding from my Apple TC. I have done a lot research and the general consensus is that the best router is the Motorola SB6141. That being said over 75% of reviews that involved Apple TC's stated that they had a lot of trouble with it working with the TC. Most suggestions led me to the Zoom 5341J. It seams to have a much better success rate with Apple TC. Any other modems that I should consider? Anybody else own, experienced these routers? I am looking for a modem only, no modem/router.

I thought the Motorola SB6141 was the best choice about 8 months ago when all the glowing test reports said it was best, and I had always had good results from their products in the past. So, it might be the best.
But, I tried 3 different SB6141s over the first week and none would hold an Internet connection more than 3-4 hours.  Might have been a bad run....it happens.....but 3 trips to the store was enough, and Time Warner support said they had been getting reports of problems at the time with a firmware mixup on the Motorola, so I decided to toss a coin and try to get some work done.
I had no idea what to try next, but my wife was with me when I went out modem hunting.....and she liked the appearance of the Netgear CMD31T because she thought that it matched the AirPort Extreme nicely. Reason enough. It was "best" in her mind.
So, we tried a Netgear. Operation has been flawless since we plugged it in. Not one single drop that I know of in 8 months.....not counting a power outage during an ice storm.
The last time that I posted on a similar question to say that I had had good luck with the Netgear, it was only a few hours before another user trashed it, saying that the Motorola was the better product by far. And it might be. But, stuff like that is normal for the forums.
The Netgear might explode tomorrow, but I would probably try another if it did.
I have no idea what your results might be with any modem that you choose.

  • Using Apple Time Capsule as wireless with ActionTech AGT784WNV

I have just began to use Verizon high speed dsl as my ISP. I had an Apple Time Capsule that I had been using to establish my wireless network. I wanted to continue to use it for various reasons. I tried to find a way to use the ActionTech as a bridge, but didn't find clear instructions. As I looked at the setting options on both devices i found I could set the timecapsule to act as a bridge only. Open airport utility. Select edit time capsule and on the network tab select bridge only. Then connect to the ethernet cable from the ActionTech.
So far that seems to work fine.

  • Can I use Apple Time Capsule both as a back up as well as an external hard drive simultaneously ?

My new IMAC has 500 GB SSD. I want to create a back up for it in a 2 or 3TB Time capsule. Is it possible to have data other than my backup data in the time capsule?  And can I access it like an external hard drive?
    Thanks
    cpsharma

    1. If you're using Time Machine, you should allow it at least 1TB of space, but see #2.
    2. Yes, but it isn't possible to partition a Time Capsule in the normal fashion, and the Time Machine backup will eventually take up all the free space on the volume containing it. If desired, create a disk image on it.

  • Getting slower speeds if using Apple Time Capsule?...

Hi. Have had Infinity2 for a couple of weeks and am happy with the sevice - much faster than my old Virgin cable. When the engineer came he installed the white modem box and connected it to a Home Hub 4. With Virgin I used the Superhub in "modem" mode and connected it to my Time Capsule which handled all the wireless stuff. I was planning on doing the same kind of thing with the BT connection as I was very happy with the Time Capsules wireless performance. The Time Capsule is around 3 years old so it's not the newest one out but I was getting good speeds from the virgin service. After a search around the internet I found a forum instructing me to connect the white modem box directly to the Capsule and set the capsule up in PPPoE mode. This all worked really well but I was suprised at how slow the wireless connection was compared to the HomeHub. The HH4 got me around 71Mb bits per sec and the Capsule got me around 43Mb per sec. Can anyone give any guidence? I am happy with the wireless speed the HH4 is giving me but wite wifi signal can be erratic at times - some mornings a power cycle is needed to reset the wireless signal. Also, when my wife uses her hair dryer, this also sometimes knocks out the wireless signal and I have to reset. Any help would be great. Thank you

My time capsule bust recently but before that I had it connected via. powerline adapters directly to the HH3 rather than to the modem.
I know I only have infinity 1 but I used to get download speeds via. wifi of 37.6 - 37.8 from my 38.72 connection from the time capsules wifi.
I now use an even older original Airport Express to create a WifFi network in the same manner and get exactly the same download results.
I would recommend steering clear of the OpenReach Modem and connect the Time capsule to the HH4 and see if you get better results that way.
I would also set your WiFi to 802.11n only (5GHz) to keep away from interferring signals.

  • What is the best method for a quick disconnect from time capsule on a Macbook Pro Retina?

Just bought a Macbook Pro Retina and want to attach Time Capsule portable disk. Do I need to go to Finder everytime I want to take my notebook and eject the harddrive?

    Quote from Bob Timmons:
"Normally, the TC icon will mount on the desktop during a backup and un-mount at the conclusion of the backup. If the TC icon still happens to be on the deskop, then you would want to right-click on the icon and choose Eject, or simply drag the icon to the Trash to do the same thing."

  • Best modem to use with time capsule?

I'm having Time Warner Cable (TWC) come into install internet only on Thursday.  I want to attach my new 3tb timecapsule to the network (which I just purchased so unused so far) and use as my wireless gateway and for wireless backup.  TWC has a list of recommended modems we can use.  I picked the motorola sb6141 but I saw a few posts on other threads here that is causes problems with Time Capsule over time and the speed diminishes.  Of their list, would someone recommend one of these other options instead? Or should I just go with the motorola?  Am not a tech savvy person, but can work with detailed instructions.  So whatever would give me the least headaches?   Thanks much!

I have a brand new macbook pro (2 months old) so i'm assuming I have the latest of everything.  I run the software update regularly.

You might want to read the discussion started in Feb 2014 with the title "What is the most reliable modem for my Apple Time Capsule." TWC was mentioned by two responders.
I am no technician and therefore cannot help beyond this referral. However,
I have a similar question about which modem to use with a Time Capsule. My ISP is Cox Communications, whose website suggests similar modem brand/types as mentioned in your list above, but also adds two Cisco models that are compatible with Cox internet. The Cisco models are DPC3000 (Preferred) and DPC3010 (Ultimate). I would like to get the DPC3010 but would like confirmation that the TC WiFi will work as flawlessly as it has been, while connected to a Linksys with DOCSIS 2.0 technology. Thanks for any advice.

  • Two family home sharing one Verizon Fios network. I want to use my time capsule to boost the signal in my basement apartment while still using the Fios network for the apartment upstairs. Is this possible?

    Hi there,
I just moved into a basement apartment in a two family home. We share internet and cable. The signal in my apartment is mediocre at best and I wanted to use my time capsule to boost the signal in my apartment while keeping their Fios network intact upstairs. Is there any way to do this without having to turn off the wifi in the Verizon actiontec router? Any help or tips would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

The only way to boost signal with apple products is to another apple product.
Or run ethernet or some other replacement for wireless. eg EOP (homeplug) adapters. These are not foolproof though.. they depend on circuits being wired via simple fuses and can at times not work.
Your other choice is to get an Airport Express.. plug it into the FIOS router and use that to establish a network.. it can also be used as a wireless bridge in the downstairs area but you can pick whichever works the best. If your wireless is reasonable at least in one location downstairs any wireless bridge could do the same thing.. and plug into the TC for your downstairs wireless.

  • What is best method for transferring iTunes library from PC to iMac?

I have a new iMac.  I have authorized it with my iTunes account.  My current iTunes library is on a Windows Vista PC, not on the same network.  What is the best method for me to use to transfer the iTunes library from the PC to the iMac?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Whats the best method to cut out hair?

Im using photoshop Cs4 - whats the best method to cut out hair from a background?

I just had to do a quick search, because I was not sure when the Refine Edge was introduced, but it appears you do have it in CS4.  Check out this tutorial, but ignore all the stuff about paths.  Make a rough selection with Quick select - it shares a location on the tool bar with the Magic Wand, so don't confuse the two.
Having made the rough selection, open Refine Edge.  I remember it took me a while to get the hang of it, but tutorials will help

The above tutorial deals specifically with CS4.  This next one is probably the best real world use of Refine Edge I've seen, because it uses a difficult subject (as opposed to the easy selections so many tutorials fob you off with)

  • I currently use a Time Capsule for my wi fi. I would like to extend its range and have been looking at boosters. Is Airport Express the best booster solution when using the Time Capsule or is there a better solution?

I currently use a Time Capsule for my wi-fi (2008). I would like to extend its range. While there are many boosters that can do the job, what is the best option? How is Airport Express as an option?

The Time Capsule (TC) can have its wireless network extended by another TC, an 802.1n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), or 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn).
If your TC is a simultaneous dual-band version, only another TC or AEBSn will be able to extend both radios. The AXn can only support one radio (2.4 or 5 GHz) at a time.
