What is best OS upgrade from 10.8.6 to be able to install spss 22?

Before the year is out I need to purchase and install, for the first time, statistics software SPSS 22 on my MacBook Pro but my current OS (10.8.6) doesn't support SPSS. The SPSS vendor site says I should install on another platform and then upgrade my OS...huh? Best to upgrade my OS first no doubt but I can't tell my Yosemites from my Mountain Lions etc. Advice on the appropriate OSX version and the particularities of installing SPSS 22 would be appreciated. Also, advice on which community to post to for this question would be very valuable!

I would suggest Mountain Lion for $20 or Yosemite for free (App Store).

Apple has been updating OS X 10.6 with security updates, although the version is still 10.6.8 max.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Depending upon what your machine is and it's RAM amount if it can go to 10.7 or 10.8
We need to know the Model Identifier and the RAM amount.
Older machines that came with 10.5 or 10.4 originally are not advised to proceed any further than 10.6.8 due to age and performance issues on the newer OS X versions of 10.7 and 10.8. Best buy a new machine if you want 10.8, doesn't make sense to buy software and have a slow machine with a older box. Either sell/donate it or use it for backup.
Also 10.7 and above will NOT run your PPC based software your currently running.
So before you upgrade, it's best to take stock of all your third party software and if they will run on the newer OS X verison. This site can assist.

  • What would make YOU upgrade from a 2011 to a 2012 MBA?

What would make you upgrade from a 2011 MBA to a 2012 MBA?
For me, the following woud be important for an 13'' MBA upgrade:
keep the low weight or even improve it
    do not sacrifice battery life
offer an 8 GB memory option
offer USB 3.0 in addition to Thunderbolt
    Pretty simple, isn't it?

True, but expecting a similar cycle of time between revisions is no more "strange" than expecting 2013 to arrive. I call it confidence in Apple's innovation cycles.
Yes, I suppose it is "speculating" in the harsh sense of the word, but so would talk about Apple's mere existence in the future. Right?

What will happen to the existing 2010 libraries when we try to upgrade them to SharePoint 2013? What can we do to them now to prevent them from breaking since we are currently on SharePoint 2010?

    Hi,
If you're using a third-party tool, you can map the slide libraries to standard document libraries.
Even if is no the subject, you can still create Slide libraries in SharePoint 2013, please see : http://techtrainingnotes.blogspot.fr/2012/11/finding-missing-sharepoint-2013-slide.html.

  • What is keeping my upgrades from being straight forward ?

I have looked and looked here and have not found similar cases to ours.  Could some body direct me to a discussion or other info?
Trying to upgrade my first gen MacBook Air from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard.
I bought the disc kit from the online Apple store.
The instructions make it sound simple; back up, click upgrade, follow the prompts etc.
Well let me tell you.  About a year ago we went through this on our iMac.  It appeared that we got a bad disc.  Got notices that the disc was partially unreadable etc.  Sent the disc back and got another.  Same problem.  I gave up.  My partner called Apple and was talked through a complex bunch of malarqui that included erasing the hard drive and reinstalling software a handful at a time and restarting and restarting and getting updates etc.
    All manual manipulation.
Why can't this be straight forward ?  We don't mess with our Macs and hack them etc.
When she did all this low and behold the drive could continue to read the Snow Leopard upgrade disc during the install.  Before it would cycle for like twenty minutes  in one spot beating the **** out of the optical drive.
    Huh !  Unreadable ?
    What is going on ?
The exact same thing is going on with my MacBook air.  Cycles and cycles and cycles and says unreadable damaged optical disc or process stopped etc. etc.
I have used a very trust worthy iomega "Super DVD" external drive and then when that didn't work (stopped part way through upgrade ) I used disc sharing from my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard and the same thing happened.
Some how I think if I call Apple care and go through all the nonsense the external drives won't give me the unreadable disc prompt.
I don't really like or trust the Time machine back up system.  I would much rather keep the internal drive loaded and tweak it.
Is there any way I can just do an upgrade without erasing my Air hard drive.  I like it as it is.  I have my Time Machine back up but I fear messing up my Air just to do this Booo Sheet upgrade.  All I want really is for my Air to go to sleep as fast as it used to and to prepare for Lion.  From what I have read since I have been searching for info here the Lion or Mountain Lion may not even work well with my older Air so am I just going to mess up my Air royally for no real benefit ?
Thanks for any enlightenment you may give.

Have you tried using a cd/dvd drive cleaner?

  • How best to upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3?

Please can someone advise how I should proceed.
I want to upgrade but I am a bit concerned as I have been having a few problems recently with my iMac freezing and having to be restarted (after which I have repaired disk, says disk is ok but repaired HFS volume).
I have also had a couple of kernel panics (very scary lost one disk already a while back don't want it to happen again) 1 panic happened when I was using Back Up so I haven't gone there again and the other happened using Disk Utility repairing permissions and Virex decided to check both partitions of my LaCie firewire drive.
I ran Disk Warrior which found problems with creation dates in link files which it repaired. I also ran a hardware test no problem there either. I have backed up to the LaCie using Deja Vu which worked but with errors as below
    /Applications/iMovie HD.app/Contents/PlugIns/ClipToChars.bundle/Contents/Resources/no.lproj/locversi on.plist -> /Volumes/iMac Back Up/Applications/iMovie HD.app/Contents/PlugIns/ClipToChars.bundle/Contents/Resources/no.lproj/locversi on.plist : [ ioErr (-36): I/o error (bummers) ]
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/ISPInfoAssistantSection.bundle/Contents/Resour ces/English.lproj/ISPInfo_ConnectionInfo.nib/classes.nib -> /Volumes/iMac Back Up/System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/ISPInfoAssistantSection.bundle/Contents/Resour ces/English.lproj/ISPInfo_ConnectionInfo.nib/classes.nib : [ ioErr (-36): I/o error (bummers) ]
Disk Utility restore wouldn't work got error -2 when I tried and it seemed to stop at the same point when copying iDVD. However I have a bootable copy on my LaCie which I have tested and it seems fine.
So where do I go from here? Any suggestions and/or instructions gratefully received.
    Thanks in anticipation

If you cannot stabilize your current system, I would like to suggest that you avoid using either the "Upgrade" or "Archive" options. Copy all of your important data to a backup drive or burn it to a CD or DVD. You can save your entire home folder if you want (and if you have room on your CD or DVD...if not you will need to use more than one) which will save all of your address book entries, mailboxes, picture and music libraries, etc. Back-up everything you want to save and don't forget any downloaded software, etc. Then perform an "erase and Install, being sure to select the "Write Zeros to Disk" option. Once you have a "good" installation of OSX.4, you can move selected files and folders back onto your system. Do not, however, just replace the new "Home" folder with the :old" one or you may end up with many of your current problems re-appearing. Also, be sure to use the same user name and password for your new system as you have on the old one so you don't encounter any permissions issues when you move stuff back onto your new system.

  • Does anyone know what I need to upgrade from Mac OS 9.1 to Mac OS 10.4??

I have a PowerBook G4 curently running Mac OS 9.1. I was wondering if someone could tell me what I need in order to upgrade to Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger". My processor does not support "leopard" so that is out of question.
    Thanks,
    Josh
PS. If you have know what I need, can you please give me a website where I can find it.
    Thanks Again

You will need to purchase a retail copy of the Tiger installation package. Since Apple no longer sells them you will need to look on the third-party marketplace. Try eBay or FastMac.com. Be sure you get the retail version. It consists of one DVD with a black label and large gray "X". Do not buy gray labeled OEM versions as the are machine specific and may not work. Do not buy an Upgrade disc as they will not work either unless you have a previous version of OS X already installed.
Since you failed to tell us the specific model you have we can't tell whether yours requires a firmware update. If it does it must be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1.
Your computer also must have at least 256 MBs of installed RAM (512 MBs or more is recommended) and at least 6-8 GBs of free space on the hard drive. A 500 MHz CPU or faster is recommended.

  • What's required to upgrade from 1.4.0 to 1.4.2?

I've got four Xserve RAIDs in a single Xsan, with two MDCs (both PowerPC Xserves running OS X Server 10.4.11). They were running Xsan 1.4.0, which meant a lot of our Leopard clients were reporting incorrect sizes for files -- like, video files that were really 10GB would show up as 1.4TB and the like.
I downloaded & installed XsanFilesystemUpdate142.dmg, as well as the Xsan Admin Tools for 1.4.2. After the installation was done on both MDCs, I shutdown one MDC and ran cvfsck on the remaining MDC for each of my two volumes.
The trouble is, the file size issue persists -- Leopard clients are still having difficulty seeing the correct file sizes. Did I miss a step in the upgrade? The Xsan Migration Guide seems to be pretty thin on details...
    Thanks!
    Chris

Please let me know if you start have issue with 1.4.2 we did the upgrade and I assume it created problems

  • New OEM SSD - what is best backup/upgrade? (SD7SN3Q256G1002 - Zenbook UX305FA)

Bought Asus Zenbook UX305FA-USM1 with this SanDisk model 256 Gb M.2 SSD (search here the text "Storage Devices"; or "and M.2 SSD module" for pictured SSD).  This is my first experience with SSD and I am more than a little impressed! But I worry about SSD and would perhaps like to have an imaged clone SSD ready at any time to replace the factory unit.  But a call to SanDisk phone tech support could not immediately recommend a replacement but instead suggested to contact Asus first for their recommendation.  So I'm coming here first for any suggestions.  A capacity of about 256 GB is sufficient for me, especially since the larger units seem out of my price range. I'm still learning about the newer connections since the old days of IDE... but I believe this is "M.2", not SATA III (?).  By the look of it, it is a 80mm in length. I'll probably have followup questions, so I'll leave my question at that for now...  Any suggestions? ... anyone with experience?

Thanks for the info... although I am almost shocked to hear that "SanDisk does not sell a M.2 SSD in retail" .  This whole field of SSD drives is confusing to me with its different form factors, various standards and variety of manufacturers. I just purchased a "2.5" sata to M.2 NGFF (B key SATA3) SSD adapter card with 9.5 mm thickness case" from China off an auction site (cheap) that shows M.2 style SSDs adapted to the more common 2.5" HDD interface.  Why would I do this?  Because I have an older laptop that sorely needs an SSD and I figure I could get a 256 GB M.2 SSD (not SanDisk evidently) and maybe try it in the laptop and also have it as a spare SDD available to replace the SanDisk in the Zenbook if it ever needed it. Tell me I'm smart or... maybe I'm in for another shock (of failure)??

  • Will I be able to upgrade from 10.6.8 directly to Mavericks or install Mountain Lion first?

I'm guessing no, but it would be nice to get official word Apple. I'd rather not deal with installing Mountain Lion unless I have to.

    10.6.8 to 10.9 Upgrade Advice
There is a good chance one can directly go from 10.6.8 to 10.9 like occurred with 10.6.8 to 10.8, skipping OS X versions in the process. We don't know for sure until it's released, it makes logical sense though.
OS X versions 10.7+ do not run PPC based software your currently using Rosetta under 10.6
So you need to first check for compatibility of your third party software before any OS X upgrade.
If it won't run with 10.7 or 10.8, it likely won't with 10.9
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
If your ok with your third party software requiring upgrades or replacements, then your good to go.
Next you will have to check the RAM and hardware requirements to make sure your machine is compatible with the upgraded OS X version, usually err a lot more than the minimal specifications Apple provides. Apple might provide the minimal hardware specifications, however it might not be ideal in performance, especially on nearly full boot hard drives.
I very HIGHLY recommend before one upgrades is to backup up their entire system using TimeMachine and/a bootable clone (ideal as you can easily revert) or TimeMachine + a copy of users files on a regular external drive then disconnect all drives before updating.
Have two copies of your data off the machine in case you need to do a erase and install of 10.9 to fix other issues with your machine. TimeMachine might have gotten corrupted unawares and refuse to restore and it would be on the older OS X version. So your extra copy of just users files on a regular drive or bootable clone is going to save your bacon.
Prevention is worth a ton of cure.  Most commonly used backup methods
Warning! If one connects a TimeMachine drive to a upgraded OS X system, because of the huge changes of the boot drive, it's likely going to cause a huge change to TimeMachine as it's a rotational backup system, it doesn't archive users files so older ones will be deleted.
If you have been storing older files on TimeMachine thinking you can restore them, then you need to make sure to save them off the TimeMachine drive on a external drive before upgrading OS X or making any substantial changes to your boot drive.
I also highly advise that if your machine has a boot hard drive (not a SSD), to reduce users files off the drive to bare minimal, they can be returned after upgrading. This has a effect of the new OS X version being written to faster portions of the boot drive instead of the slower ones with a full boot drive, also less defragmention occurs. Hopefully this will avoid a lot of the "I've upgraded and my machine is now slow problems"
If you have a SSD is to make sure you have about 75% of the SSD free space by reducing users files.
Regardless of a SSD or maximum RAM, after upgrading OS X on older machines it might appear slower than before, it's because newer OS X versions are more feature rich and tailored to newer machines with more RAM, faster processors and graphics capability. This is normal and to be expected for instance the OS X Lions really work better with 4GB of RAM or more, despite Apple saying 2GB is the minimal.
At this time we don't know exactly what minimal hardware will work best with the new OS X version or how to advise if certain machines are better off on the older OS X 10.6.8. However in my opinion it seems Early 2011 laptops and later with SSD's seem to go better with the newer OS X versions of 10.7 and later.
It doesn't mean yours won't work, it's just that it would be better with these later models than on earlier ones.
If your not computer savvy, there is nothing wrong in waiting until the problems of a new OS X upgrade be resolved before making your leap.
I also suggest one makes sure there are no other "problems" with their machine before upgrading as it very well come to light and leave you angry and confused on what to do.
Again, a ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.

  • Tiger upgrade from 10.2.8 - never got "ARchive and Install" option?

I selected the destination. Selected "customize" to add additional software to install. And then clicked whatever was next - sorry don't remember exact button name but it was the next step. AND THEN IT HAPPENED - the install. I noticed that it said "upgrade" for software under the custom install so at least something was recognized. BUT I wanted to select "archive and Install" and "Preserve Users and Network Settings". So am I now hosed? I guess I'll find out in about 10 minutes when its all done but I'm very confused / upset as I read EVERYTHING in advance to make sure this would go smoothly. So why didn't I get that screen as listed in the documentation? GRRRR

    Hello rstwohee:
You should be OK. A&I is an option - why you did not see the option is a function of what you did - and neither of us have any way of determining that.
Run permission repair after the upgrade. Also, it would not hurt to run disk repair from yoru software install DVD.

  • Windows 10 upgrade from 7 Pro: No internet and cannot manually install drivers for adapters...

PC: HP Proboook 4510SPrevious OS: Windows 7 Pro 32-bitNew OS: Windows 10 Pro 32 bit Issue:  I upgraded to windows 10 from 7 pro and some of my internal devices dont have drivers. I could fix this issue quickly if two of them were not my ethernet card and wireless adapter.  Right now I only have 2 adapters listed under network adapters and both are virtual VM ethernet cards.  Neither of these can establish a connection through a router I know is working on other laptops in my house.  The error I get is that the IP address cannot be resolved.  The odd part is that when I look at the details for the VM ethernet cards it shows a good DHCP IP and subnet....TX/RX is no good though as it only shows sending packets and not recieving them.   I tried to manually install the windows 7 drivers from a USB stick. I got them off of HP's website. I installed them but it did nothing.  However, I was having no luck and restarted and they momentarily showed up in the adapters list (under network settings in control panel).  Then as soon as I tried to enable them they went away and I still have no internet.  Not sure what is going on or what to do.  If I cannot install the HP drivers and get them to work, and I cannot connect to the internet to let windows fix the problem I seem to be stuck.. Please Help.

Hello , I understand that your secondary DVD drive is not recognizable as an optical device on your desktop computer after upgrading to Windows 10. I would be happy to assist you in this matter! When you examine the installed drives in the BIOS, does the 2nd DVD drive appear? What brand are the two DVD drives? What is the product number for your computer? Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on HP PCs - Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update (Windows 10, 8). This should help to install any possible updates required to run the secondary DVD drive. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above.
