What is best windows compatible web share format once and for all?

Wmv looks good, but I don't want to buy flip4mac studio. The other formats I have tried look bad and are huge files. I have searched forum for answer in vain.

* best for windows is .wmv (non Apple compatible, YOUhave to pay for an exporter)
* best compatibility for all is a free upload service, as youtube, videogoogle, et al (.. hm.. quality..? )
best quality is h264, needs a free install of "Quicktime for Windows" on PC (some PCusers don't like to add QT on their fragile system) ...
* best in means of cheap is iSquint, creates a good looking, small .mp4 (which some PC don't "like", allthough Windows is able to handle .mp4 outside any containers (mov/avi) ..) ...
PS: you'll find ~4000 video codecs out there, but no universal one, nor "best" ....

Black Screen before installing windows 7. Lets solve once and for all.

I have a late 2008 macbook pro and have been trying to install windows 7 through boot camp for a number of days now. I have read every forum on the internet and have tried every popular solution (i.e. resetting pram, smc, unplugging, changing screen resolution, etc.) and nothing has worked. I know there are many other people with this problem but none of them have solutions. I had windows 7 installed a few months ago but it stopped working and I had to delete it. Just yesterday I reinstalled Snow Leopard and still nothing. I created the partition and tried to install windows but it just goes to the blinking cursor for one second, then a black screen. I have tried everything possible and nothing works.
Please lets try to get this problem solved because out of every single forum on the internet, none of them have solved this problem.

I think after weeks of searching I have finally narrowed it down, based on what I have read, to a disk drive problem. It seems to be something wrong with the EFI or the entire disk drive in general. I am taking it to the apple store tomorrow and I highly doubt they will do anything.

Problem: I have to run repair permissions to access the internet using safari, firefox or chrome on my mac pro. What can I do to fix the problem once and for all?

To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

i'm listening to some of my own recordings and it keeps annoying me that i just can't get the vocals to be powerful.... And it's not my singing voice!
I've put vocals by other professional singers over my instrumental tracks and it all sounds sharp and 'into it', whereas my vocals 9dubbed or not) keep sounding shallow and bleak. i use a good microphone, but that's it. How can i improve it all?

Yes, i suggest you to use a MIDI-Keyboard, even a small one (like my M-AUDIO KeyRig25) is good and fun to use. It's also better to use some specific Audio Plug-Ins which you can use in GB. There are many freewares around.

Once and for all, compression for web

I have done a lot of research on this, when exporting what are the best settings to export to the web (size and quality) I know it depends on the type of video you have.
The best settings I have so far are:
Export to
QT conversion
Broadband High
Change size to 320x240
I remember reading the outcome should be 3 megs a minute, however my 5 minute mov is 33 mb, I neeeed to get it smaller,
any suggestions?

try the h.264 codec. I've done some stuff at 350k -- 640x480 -- it looks great. Since my project was heavy on slides, I just went for 15fps -- but I did run a test at 29.97 and it did not (surprisingly) have much effect on file size.

OK, once and for all, what is wrong with my Bluetooth!

My warranty runs out in 3 weeks, so I need to know if I need to have my Mac sent away for repair.... again.
I've had the mouse replaced, and it does respond better. I've tried a PRAM reset, that was supposed to stop my keyboard from disconnecting intermittently.
But just now my setup did what it keeps doing and has been doing ever since i started using bluetooth. The keyboard disconnects, and then the mouse goes all jumpy when I move the arrow. It comes backs after a minute or two usually.
Why is this happening?

Welcome to the club. I've had the same problems for many months, and I've tried every conceivable fix to no avail. I'm no newbie, by the way. I've tried at least 20-25 different "suggestions" and nothing worked. I got so sick of the situation that I finally hooked up my Apple Pro keyboard and dumped the wireless unit (which used to work perfectly under Tiger and earlier versions of Leopard). By the way, I always lost Bluetooth connectivity when I had significant video activity going on, like video podcasts. I also lost Bluetooth totally when I went into Time Machine; both the wireless keyboard and mouse became useless every time. I'm convinced it's a software issue. I'm now wired with my trusty trackball and my wired keyboard and the machine purrs like a kitten. This is the only issue since 1984, when I started with Macs, that I have never been able to solve. My greatest disappointment with Apple.

Believe it or not, even though I own a 24" I alway try to keep my expenses to a minimal. I posted my question on the Skype's forum and was able to get some help.
I am now able to use the same headset (not usb based) to work, and now I'm using it flawless, and I didn't have to buy a headset from the The Apple Store or Skype. I paid $12.00 at Fry's electronics....

I edit my images in Photoshop, but that doesn't seem to stop IPhoto from creating many versions of the same image, thus taking up valuable space. Anyone know a workaround.

iPhoto by default saves your Original File, it create a tiny thumbnail for display and - if you modify the pic via iPhoto - it creates an edited version. iPhoto is adhering to the best practise for managing digital assets - the original is akin to your Negative in old film terms.
There is, bluntly, no way to stop this. It is hardwired into the application. If you don't want this feature then don't use iPhoto. There are several hacks that claim to remove unwanted versions, however they are not recommended as they risk corrupting your library.
If space is an issue you can run your Library from an external disk.
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

First of all, is the music only disappearing from your iPod, or from your iTunes Library as well?
From your other thread, I gather you swap between Manually Managing and Syncing. This is a bad idea, it will lead to confusion on your part about what should be on the iPod. You'll make a choice that iTunes later overrides - because you've told it to. Choose one method or the other, not both.
Peresonally, I recommend using the iTunes Sync process. Using Sync will not prevent you from deciding what's on your iPod. You will still have a free and full choice in that. The Sync process will however, make it far easier for you to put everything back onto your iPod in the event that you need to Restore your iPod, or when you replace this iPod with a newer one.
Back to your issue though. Is the music, missing from your iPod, still in your Library?

Auto-formatting disabled once and for all

I just want to type like I want to type without the program "improving" formatting according to its own inscrutable logic. For instance, I like to type numbered paragraphs free-form without having some "list robot" automatically changing my margins and even fonts. I have tried to change various options, but obviously haven't hit upon the magic combination.
I don't want Pages to change a thing as I'm typing. This is the biggest frustration the users in my office have with Pages.

I am fimilar with changing the setting for all network partitions(defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true), but that is undesirable when I connect my laptop to my home network. A preferable solution would be where I could control the writing of these files based on disk format (NTFS vs HFS+).

Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.

also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

What is the best high res image file format to use for print

Dear All,
I'm working on a 300 + page catalog, and I was wondering what would be the best image format to use on the catalog. I thought png was the best since it supports background transparency and all, but for some reason I'm not able to export it once I change the image to CMYK ( since I need CMYK for print ). Should I save all in eps. instead? Please help would be appreciated.

.psd is the best... supports everything you would want for print. PDF does also, but takes a little more knowledge to use properly.
.png is recommended when using Word etc.
EPS is obsolete.

Best way to completely share iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes between 2 users?

I want to set up my new brandnew iMac (2.66 Intel Core 2) running Leopard the following way: Two accounts (for me and my wife) on the same iMac, no external drive. We want to completely share iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes libraries in a shared folder on the hard disk. That means we need full read, write and edit access to all files and subfolders in this shared folder. We will not use these libraries at the same time.
*What's the best way to do this?*

(On our old/current system (Panter), achieving this was quite tricky thing! A posting by Scott Radloff explained step by step how to use Netinfo, then Terminal and finally TinkerTool. I hope it's easier now!)

Sharing the iPhoto library via the Shared Folder cannot be done in 10.5.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
