  • What's better than Illustrator?

I've been using Illustrator for many years and several versions.  My usage is nominal and occasional/once a week, and I don't get very sophisticated for my needs, so it has been OK so far. I do not do commercial work but know Ai is the "de-facto std".
But I read this forum often and see many criticisms of Ai and I do have occasional issues with Illy with tools and UI....just not as easy or robust as it could/should be...cumbersome at times.
I see JET and others here make great use of Illy but also criticize (justifiably) it for not being as good as other vector tools.
I know there are competitors, Inkscape is free, others less costly than Illy; and seemingly better/easier/faster to use...at least for some things.
So my question: What is better than Illustrator (I'm using CS5) and why? What can they do better than Ai?  Is it worth having a second program and learning (tho I suspect the learning curve should be easy as they do similar things but have different GUI).  Or replacing Illy with something?
Pro's/Con's that would make one make the effort to try/use something else?  I don't even know what out there is better than Illy.  I've searched www and got a few hints but nothing very significant.
Am I wasting my time looking?
Your feedback welcomed to help me decide whether to explore/trial other programs.

I see JET and others here...criticize (justifiably) it for not being as good as other vector tools.
I can't speak for "and others", but since I'm the only one you mention by name:
If you've already deemed the criticism justifiable, then you must already know what that criticism says. When I criticize Illustrator, I don't just say "Illustrator is crap" and leave it at that, unsupported. I'm careful to explain myself with facts pertinent to the context of the discussion. I actually own and know how to use the other programs to which I compare. I've often posted lists of comparitive features.
I've always used my real name here and sign all my posts with my initials. So finding my comments is not difficult.
I know there are competitors, Inkscape is free, others less costly than Illy; and seemingly better/easier/faster to use...at least for some things. So my question: What is better than Illustrator (I'm using CS5) and why? What can they do better than Ai?
Didn't you just answer your own question? Other than the broadly general things you just mentioned, what program do you want to compare, and for doing what? Surely you're not asking someone to do an exhaustive feature-by-feature comparison between Illustrator and all similar programs in this one thread?
All you've said about what you use Illustrator for is that your use is nominal, occasional, unsophisticated, and non-commerical. Mine isn't. Commerical graphics has been my livelihood for over 40 years. Vector-based illustration is both a speciality and a passion.
    I...knowAi is the "de-facto std"
"Defacto standard" is self-fulfilling. It's effectively equivalent to saying "More people use Illustrator because more people use Illustrator."
So what? More people ride Vespa scooters than KTM motorcycles. But which one would you call "professional quality"? You can use either one to pick up a gallon of orange juice at the corner store. But if you enter an enduro, the KTM will get the job done with alot less stress.
The myth is that most software buyers choose the best. That's as naive as the faith that most voters do.
Illustrator has been slothfully resting on its "defacto standard" haunches since the dark ages (AKA the 80s). "Defacto standard" be hanged.
I do have occasional issues with Illy with tools and UI....just not as easy or robust as it could/should be...cumbersome at times.
Okay. What issues? State something specific and users actually familiar with other programs can compare.
This is the 21st century. There's really little new under the sun here. A 2D drawing program is just an interface pasted on top of mostly the same old geometric functionality. The competitive advantage goes to the offering that best (easy) and most fully (robust) empowers the user. The multiplication of easy and robust yields elegance. That's a term I've never applied to Illustrator. Illustrator is one of the oldest of the bunch, lounging under the sun for so long it's at risk of skin cancer. Yet it still fails to provide basic functionality users of other drawing programs have taken for granted for decades.
Examples that may be germane to your casual, non-commerical use? Try these things in Illustrator:
Star Tool: Draw a star. Now change the number of points it has.
Arc Tool: Draw 36 degrees of a circular arc.
Label that star with a dimension.
Distribute a group of different objects along a curve.
Uniformly space Blend steps along a non-uniform curve.
Attach a Blend to a closed path and have the first/last instances properly positioned.
Knife Tool: Cut across an open unfilled path.
Connect a text label to an object that stays connected when you move it.
Paste a simple graphic into a text string so that it flows with the text.
Perform a Find/Replace on carriage returns.
Round Corners: Apply it to an accute or obtuse angle and have it actually yield the radius you specify.
    Crop a raster image.
Rotate something. Go back later and find out what its rotation angle is.
Pathfinders: Use them without wrecking existing fills/strokes.
I could go on (and have). How long a list do you want? All the features/functions associated with the above basic operations (and many more) are substandard, half-baked, or even non-existent in Illustrator. This is "professional"-grade software? No, it's largely consumerish rubbish sold at exhorbitant prices just because it's the "defacto standard."
Is it worth having a second program and learning...
Obviously, it is to me (and a third, and a fourth, and...). As I've said many times in this forum, I don't know how anyone can legitimately claim to compare two programs if they've only got workaday familiarity with one.
As with any other endeavor, the more drawing programs you're comfortable with, the less arduous it is to pick up another, because you tend to pick up on the underlying principles involved, as opposed to just becomming habituated to a particular program's command locations and procedures by rote.
But you've been using AI for "many years" and find it to be "OK". So if you're happy with it, use it.
I have a cheap, consumerish Ryobi table saw and it's "OK." But I didn't pay a professional-grade price for it, either. And I'm sure not going to write glorious reviews on it, call it "professional," and get all fearfully brand-loyal defensive about it if someone dares suggest I might ought to learn to use a different one. My use of it, like yours, is merely occasional. But I also presently need to build a TV cabinet, and I'm dreading it. If I were to open a cabinet shop, I'd be much more discriminating, and would do my own homework to make an informed decision.
    Or replacing Illy with something?
One doesn't have to "replace." There's nothing any more wrong with using more than one 2D drawing program than there is with using more than one 3D modeling program, or raster imaging program, or page layout program, or word processor, or video edting program, or....
Pro's/Con's that would make one make the effort to try/use something else?
That depends on what one is doing with it. Not knowing that, I can again only offer generalities that matter to me: If you've only ever used one program of a particulat kind, you're rather in the dark regarding functionality that you may be missing that may be important to you. (Second-degree ignorance: You don't know what you don't know.) If you're mission-dependent upon that one program, you're also kind of captive to the whims and agenda of its vendor.
That very well may not matter to you, given your nominal, occasional, unsophisticated, and non-commerical use. And if so, that's fine.
I don't even know what out there is better than Illy. I've searched www and got a few hints but nothing very significant.
But you just said you've been reading a bunch of posts here which mention other programs.
Am I wasting my time looking?
Only you can answer that about your time. Time is all any of us have.
Your feedback welcomed to help me decide whether to explore/trial other programs.
No offense, but frankly it sounds like you're just not motivated enough to do your own homework. If you are  sufficiently motivated, visit the websites of other drawing program vendors. Read the features lists. Dowload the demos, read the documentation, and try them out. Visit the programs' user forums. Or, if it's really not that important to you, don't.
If you've got questions about specific functionality and/or specific programs, be more specific about what you do (or want to do).

  • Can I receive messages from Skype when my ipad is in sleep mode and the app is closed?

Ok, can I receive messages from Skype when my ipad and iPod touch are off, and the app is closed? Becuase my mom sent me a message and I did nott receive it. I have to have the app running or running in the background to receive messages. Is there a way to recieve messages when my ipad and ipod do NOT have the app running?

The ipad may keep a connection alive in sleep mode.. but it should only use local connection AFAIK, and no internet content.
I have a similar setup with iPad and although it has an IP it is not actually reachable on the network. I will track usage and see if it is actually using anything but I would doubt it.
Now of course it may depend on what apps you have running. I really doubt the ipad will be using that much of your download unless you are watching movies on it.

  • What is better for college? An iPad air or an iPad mini with retina display?

I'm currently a junior in high school and I'll be graduating in the summer of 2015. My parents, well mostly dad, are planning on buying me the iPad air with 128 GB of memory. I got curious and went to look at the price and compare models and I saw that the iPad mini with retina display was the same as the iPad air, the only difference is the size. Since I saw that it was cheaper I was thinking on telling my parents to buy me that instead of the iPad air because it is more costy and my family isn't really the rich kind of people. I will be only using the iPad for school and nothing else since I have my iPod to play games on and stuff so it will only be used for purely educational purposes. Plus I've been hearing around that the iPad air is not that great and stuff because it has a bigger screen and such. Personally for me, I do not care about the screen size I just care about the price for my parents' sake because I don't like it when they have to spend a lot of money. So can you please help me decide on which to get and why it would be better than the other? Please and thank you.

Unless you are going to store many thousands of high resolution photos and LOTs of movies or videos, you don't need a 128GB storage. Save some $ and get a smaller capacity.

  • FaceTime better than Skype? Why?

It seems face times needs less data than Skype. It works more reliable. Can this be? Why?

Skype is a more sophisticated video chat program than Facetime.  Skype also has more useful options than Facetime.
Where Facetime excels, is the  fact that it is an easy way for users of the many Apple devices to communicate with each other. (not all Apple products are FT capable)
Lastly, in my opinion, Facetime is not more reliable than Skype.

Two IPAD2 users on one computer , I needed to update my IPAD2 now I have the wrong user on my IPAD2. How do I get my account back on my IPAD 2 ?

  • What is better a shell script or a user exit?

    Hi experts!
I need to change the owner of a file when I send it to XI sever.
I talk with the administrator of the system to change the owner with a shell script but he tell me that is better if I use a user exit. But my question is: What is better? The shell script or the user exit?

    hi,
    >>>>I talk with the administrator of the system to change the owner with a shell script but he tell me that is better if I use a user exit
maybe because the admin does not do the user exits ?
you can do it with XI but you'll have to create it
via a proxy for example (as standard file adapter does
    not support this)
on the other hand the file adapter supports invoking
system commands (so you can start a shell script)
I'm not directly answering your question
I'm just telling you what you'll have to do
to build your solution in both cases

  • Collaborative editing unable between two ipad users

I'm trying to share a numbers file created on an iPad (and stored on iCloud) with my wife's iPad to allow for real time editing, but seems to me that the only way to do it is using a web browser running on a MAC o PC (Safari on the iPad seems unable to do it). Is not possible to do it with numbers running on two iPads? How strange... Ought to be my fault.
    Thanks for your support.
    Amando Hernández

Grrrr yes I also just stumbled across this very problem after I spent the money on the app for my girlfriend.  I've requested a refund as this is very very poor.  Iwork for iCloud pages talk of sharing, collaboration, ios, web etc etc yet in practice I simply can't collaborate  with another user on an ios device using safari or Numbers app.
    Very disappointing.
Share document links with others instead of sending out lots of separate attachments. Then make instant progress by editing together in real time. See who’s in the document and follow their cursor as they make edits alongside you. You’ve never had a closer working relationship. With people so far away.

  • I have two iPads and want to change ID's

how can I swap ID's from two iPad's?

To keep the data and settings, back up each device manually by right clicking on it in the device list and choosing "backup", then restore each one using the backup from the other device.
If you just want to change the Apple ID, go to Settings/Store/Apple ID, log out, restart the device and log in again with the second Apple ID. Apps and other media bought with a different ID will be erased during the following sync.

  • When will Ipad users be able to view a video attachment in email?

I am new at this and have just bought the IPAD for my husband who is in
chemo and radiation therapy and needs to pull his email from bed to keep busy. Alot of his emails have wave files that use quicken, when will this application be available for IPAD users or will it never be available?

Alot of his emails have wave files that use quicken,
Perhaps you mean files that use Quicktime?
In any case, the supported formats for email attachments have been listed in the tech specs since Jan. 27. Nobody can tell you if or when those are going to change.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
If it is not there, best to switch to a laptop/netbook.

  • What impact should I see when my Ipad mini is associated to my Wife's Apple ID

    I have a 64gb Ipad mini
My wife has a 16gb Ipad with retina
Both me and my wife have purchased tv shows in iTunes using my Ipad mini and have both downloaded content to that device.
My Ipad mini shows in my wife's iTunes account as being associated with her Apple ID.
To date, I can't see that I have been impacted by that association because we can both log in and out of iTunes on that device, download TV series and play those shows.  With my device being associated with my Wife's Apple ID, what impact should it have on me?
I've been corresponding with Apple for over two weeks and am still no closer being given an answer that makes any sense   I just seems that I am being given stock answers to another question
I have been given links to many help articles that have been directly and indirectly relevant to my query, but they don't answer my question.  I've also read through the community support forum, but there's nothing that I can find that relates to my question.
We are both new to Apple products, iTunes is new territory for us.  I simply want to understand whether or not our shared use of my Ipad mini will create a problem that locks either one of us out of certain content.  We'd rather know this up front so that we make an informed choice of whether to continue purchasing hard copies or start using iTunes for purchasing TV shows.

We have Apple TV (3rd gen)

I found this article for you on the iTunes support website at:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww

    Hi Japple,
A long time ago, which iTunes account you used to make purchases was important due to the DRM that Apple used at the time.  Now that most music on the iTunes Store is DRM-free the distinction of which account was used to purchase the music is irrelevant.  Songs can be copied freely to as many computers and devices that you own.
Movies and TV shows, however, are not all DRM free.  They have Apple's FairPlay DRM embedded.  What does this mean for you?  Probably not much.  You can authorize up to five computers to play a video file downloaded from either of your iTunes accounts.  iTunes itself keeps track of the associations and, if you change devices in the future, it's very easy to dissociate your accounts in the iTunes Store.
Let me give you an example of how this works.  Let's say my wife buys a CD and a movie from iTunes and I want it on my computer in my library too.  First thing I need to do is copy the files to my machine and add them to my iTunes library (File --> Add to Library, I believe).  When I try to play the music, they'll work immediately, no more configuration required.  When I try to play the movie, however, iTunes will ask me to associate my computer with my wife's Apple ID (if I haven't already done so in the past).  To associate my computer, all I need to do is enter her Apple ID and password into the dialog box that pops up and I'm good to go.  Now I can play that file in my iTunes on my computer without any trouble.  I can also download it to my iOS devices (iPad, iPod, iPhone) seamlessly.
An Apple TV is different than the other iOS devices in that its primary purpose is to stream files from computers, other iOS devices, or the iTunes Store directly.  The Apple ID that you associate with your Apple TV is only relevant to the purchases you make from the iTunes Store and if you turn on Home Sharing.  But both you and your wife can stream files to your Apple TV from your iOS devices.  Make sure that AirPlay is enabled on your Apple TV and your iPads. Then select the Apple TV you want to stream to from your iPad and you should be good to go.
My wife and I have a similar environment to the one you describe and have no trouble viewing or using content on any of our devices (including computers).
    Best of luck!

  • Can you have different face time accounts when two iPads use the same iTunes account?

I use one iTunes account for all apple products but want to use face time. Can I set it up so when we are not together we can face time each other.

Yes. In settings, FaceTime, just add an email. Email acts as a phone number. When you place a call to the other ipad, just make sure it's to that email.

  • What is better than WAP 200

    HI,
I have a small business, i use to have an Access Point from another brand, I had a lot of problems using it like every time it looks like it freeze, I can see the wireless but I don’t get internet access from it, and I need to reboot it to fix this issue, this issue might happen 3 days per week or more.
I removed it and installed the WAP200 and since that time the issue has been gone, i faced it on the WAP200 few times but its ok so far my wireless is good and everything is ok,
The problem that I am facing now is the signal range, the WAP as you know has 2 antennas, and 1 send and 2nd receive,
I used an 8dbi indoor antenna to make the signal go more in range but it still didn’t reach the range I need.
My question is: is there something better then the WAP200 in range and it might have 4 antennas (2 send - 2 receive)
Or is there any other solution to cover all my office using 1 AC only?
i don’t want to go on with repeaters as my office is not that big it’s a normal apartment from 6 rooms with a corridor between them.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks for reading this

I used an 8dbi indoor antenna to make the signal go more in range but it still didn’t reach the range I need.
Good gosh.  That's a very, very strong antenna.
I'm no expert with Small Business range, but with the enterprise range, I personally won't recommend this strong antenna.  The reason is because the client can hear the strong signal from the WAP, HOWEVER, the WAP will NOT be able to hear the weak signal from the client.
My question is: is there something better then the WAP200 in range and it might have 4 antennas (2 send - 2 receive)
Or is there any other solution to cover all my office using 1 AC only?
How big is this office?  I mean can you see your neighbor's wireless?  What are the walls made of?  What's above and below your office.  These questions matters alot.

  • What is better for home movie editing, ipad or mac book?

i have a panasonic hdc-sd90 camcorder and my current laptop is woefully underpowered to run any of the hd editing software so i have been thinking of an upgrade and this seems to be a good reason to do so.  I also am self employed and require software that i can do basic invoicing on a spreadsheet.  I like the idea of portablilty so the ipad is appealing but i don't know if it is powerful enough to enable me to edit my home movies adequately, plus the exporting issues that seem to come with the ipad (although i have heard there are apps you can get that help with this and printing documents as well from the ipad would be an advantage)  If the new ipad is not able to edit the home movies then what mac book would be best for my needs?
i am relatively new to apples products and growing gradually more frustrated with windows based pc's as time goes on, hence the temptation to switch to apple.

Light weight basic needs, power miser - MacBook Air (glossy screens)
Semi-light weight basic needs, more storage, DVD drive, hot machine (no 3D gaming) - 13" MacBook Pro (glossy screens)
