What is broken in Quicktime?

I used be able to download the trailers from the iTunes Movie Trailers website, but not anymore.  At least not on two of my three Macs.
What used to work is when I would select one of the download options, Quicktime would open and load the trailer.  I could then export it to a folder as a .mov file.
Now when I select a download option, Safari beachballs for a bit and Quicktime never opens.  And if try again, Safari gets unresponsive and I have to quit it.
I found a work around that gets the trailer downloaded but it requires right clicking th download link and copying it.  Then starting Quicktime myself and pasting the URL into the location field in Quicktime.
I Googled this and many seem to blame a missing Quicktime plugin.  The only plugin I've ever seen listed in Safari is the one for Quicktime 7 which is not even used in this case.
Any ideas on how to re enable the Quicktime/Safari link?

I'll copy it and paste the Plugins Data below.  Are you thinking somethings conflicting?

  • What format do the Quicktime files need to be in?

okay so i just got a mac. haven't had time to play with it much. but quick easy (prolly dumb) question.
what format does the quicktime file need to be in (both audio and video)?
    and
how do i get my movies into that format?
*i do have handbrake as well.
    Thanks

Where did your files come from and what are you trying to do with them.
BTW, if what you are trying to do involves starting with commercial, copy protected DVDs, using HB, and then making copies of those commercial DVDs, we can not help you here under the Apple Forum Terms of Use. Sorry.
If your movies were actually created by you or a friend, we will be glad to try and help you figure things out.

What kind of media are in your project?
Does this happen with other projects or just this one?  Import a fresh clip and edit it to a fresh project, try exporting as a master file.

  • What is needed i QuickTime for Premiere import?

My customer wants video to his Windows Premiere system. I am Mac/FCP and exported MOV files in original codecs, HDV and XDCAM EX.
Now the customer cannot import the files, gets the dreadful messege "QuickTime lacks a component ....." To make it more difficult there is no explaination of what is missing. The Components page does not give a clue.
Have tried other forums, maybe can I get a good answer here.
    Cheers,
    Sverker

You've used codecs that are only supported by the Final Cut software. Since Windows users can't download those components you are forced to use more compatible codecs.
Use the standard DV Stream codec (.dv) or H.264 or ProRes 422 (requires QuickTime 7.5.5).

  • What export options in Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Pro should I select to export  HDV video in .MOV files to highest quality Windows-compatible files?

I have some HDV video files imported through iMovie to .MOV files with Apple Intermediate Codec.
I need to convert these to Windows compatible video files of the highest possible ( least loss) quality.  What export options in Final Cut Pro or in Quicktime Pro should I select?  The codex in the converted files must not be Apple Intermediate Codec, for which there is no Windows version.

Okay, I read the whole Flip4Mac website.
Flip4Mac is an application for Apple computers.
Perhaps my question was unclear.  When I posed it I was thinking of asking somebody with an Apple shop to do the conversion for me, and wanted advice on settings for his QUicktime Pro /Final Cut Pro that would produce the highest quality Windows -compatible files.
The Windows version of Quicktime will not play Quicktime files with Apple Intermediate Codec.  You get black screen video, although the audio does come through.
So here's what I need:  I need a Windows application that will transcode Quicktime files in Apple Intermediate Codec, with no loss or very little loss, to WIndows-compatible files.   All Windows, all the time.  Thank you.

  • What's new between quicktime 7.1 and quicktime7.0 H264 decoder

    I have a 264+AAC file,
it can play on quicktime version 7.0 correct,
when i update quicktime version 7.1,
only the first GOP is correct,
any body know what different between quicktime decoder version 7.0 and 7.1 ?
    thx!

    _dir = _plug_ie("SWCtl.SWCtl.1");
    _fla = _plug_ie("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.1");
What is the role which these two sentences? What's the difference?
The first represents the Director Shockwave ActiveX control while the second is the Flash Player control. Shockwave is the plugin used for playing Adobe Director movies in the browser while Flash is for Flash SWF files. Shockwave <> Flash, but unfortunately when MacroMedia owned them both they confused the namespace already occupied by the Shockwave plugin by calling the Flash Player AX control "ShockwaveFlash"

  • DVSD Codec Error - AVI broken in Quicktime

Wanted to revive this issue from 2007 as it seems it still persists. If you have problems opening or manipulating an AVI container using the DVSD Codec on your Mac (quicktime or other 3rd party application like Toast, etc) the likely cause is still Perian. Simply head over to your system preferences and remove Perian. Do what you need to do with the AVI and you can add Perian back.

    Hey all,
Just wanted to update you. AVIs are working now in FCP, provisionally. It was strange. I removed the Perian.component from Quicktime, and voila, Quicktime could play the AVIs. Strange, because usually Perian is rock solid. Switching back to Final Cut, I scrub over the AVIs in the timeline and a red message pops up in the Canvas I've never seen before: "The codec could not be opened." Restart FCP, and now they work fine, no error message.
So it seems Perian was the guilty party. If any of you have it installed, and you've recently updated Quicktime, you may need to remove Perian until they release their next version. Thanks!

  • What to do about QuickTime question marks in Safari 2.0.4?

    Hi everyone,
This may sound like a stupid question but it's beginning to bug me:
When I use Safari to browse the internet, I see question marks in lots of areas where there is supposed to be animated clips or images. The question marks are over the QuickTime symbol.
    I'm using Safari 2.0.4
I'm using QT 7.1.3 and did not update because 7.1.5 had a bug in it that was interfearing with ffmpegX that I use to convert video and music containers.
    - Is there any firmware that could get rid of the anoying Questions marks and let me see what I'm missing on webpages?
    - Or do I need to update Safari?
FireFox on the other hand does not give me that problem.
    Input is always appreciated.
    Rio.

    1) what does "com.apple.Safari.plist" do?
    2) What is it for?
    3) Why was it created?
a .plist file stores all of the user preferences for the associated application as well as information like what app to use for video, audio, viewing PDF files, etc. These files can easily become corrupted over time. Trashing them forces the application to create a fresh file.
    4) What IS a Cache file?
    5) What is IN a cache file?
    6) Why does a computer NEED cache files?
    7) What will happen when I find the mentioned cache files and delete them?
Cache files store information. The cache file for your web browser would store previously visited pages, images, downloaded files etc. This allows the application to reload pages (or files) faster since the data is stored locally and does not have to be retrived from a remote server. Again these files can become quite large and are prone to corruption. I have found it prudent to empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu, select "Empty Cache") every couple of days.
Re-installing apps from the DVD requires a program such as "Pacifist" to extract the program files. It's cumbersome and better if you can avoid it.
    NotNed
PS: You should reboot the computer after trashing .plist files. Since the file is already loaded into RAM, the new file will usually not be created until the next time the system loads.

  • Cant mount dmg; what is broken pipe?

I'm downloading software from Version Tracker and software originator's websites (Adobe). The dmg's download OK, but when they are opened they fail to mount; reason given is "broken pipe". Anyone have ideas how to deal with this? Dmg's downloaded from Apple Software Update do NOT do this.
    Thanks!

Still not quite clear about what you did. If you have all your data backed up on another drive (which is NOT connected to the computer), did you do this:
    1. Insert original install disk (with nothing whatsoever connected to computer)
    2. Select erase drive and install the OS
    3. Create an admin account with the same name as your original
    5. WITHOUT importing anything from your backup, tried to use Disk Utility and tried to mount a dmg file
If that's what you did and neither Disk Utility nor DiskImageMounter will work I suspect you have a hardware problem.

  • Mpeg1 playback sticks... What is up with Quicktime??

Ok, I have now tried creating mpeg1 files through 3 different converters (converting from AVI). These AVI files have been rendered from Premiere Pro and 3d Studio Max (ie, no timecode breaks!!)
Without fail, every single finished mpg file plays perfectly in all media players except Quicktime, where the first 3 seconds stick horribly.
I tried contacting Canopus (makers of the Procoder software), who replicated the problem on their side too. They told me that the problem lay with the QT player and that I should contact Apple.
Of course, Apple do not offer ANY direct online support whatsoever, quite frankly that doesnt really surprise me now...
    God, what an awful product.
I would highly recommend that everyone use something else...
    Message was edited by: boswaldo

Why are you using MPEG-1 in the first place? 16 years old and better formats exist.
QuickTime Player follows "rules" that many other players do not. If it balks at the first 3 seconds of your file there must be a problem in the file.

  • What happened to my Quicktime Player?

Quicktime is suddenly playing my videos in a strange way. I get video and sound, but the image is "floaty" - almost as if it leaves a cloud trail, and the audio and video don't match right.
More Info - I use Quicktime Pro to convert files from .mov to .avi so I can edit them in my Sony Movie Software. Suddenly, the files wouldn't convert yesterday. After hours of troubleshooting, I realized that the problem starts because I can't view the files properly in Quicktime any more. Therefore, the converter says it can't read the files.
    Any help is appreciated!

You don't need to buy QuickTime Pro. QuickTime Player came with OS X, and as it's damaged, the first thing you should try is to reinstall 10.7.5 using the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1582
If this doesn't install QuickTime Player, you have to reinstall OS X. Hold Command and R keys while your iMac is starting up, and reinstall OS X. When OS X is reinstalled, QuickTime Player will be back in Applications folder. Additionally, if you have a backup, you can try to restore it instead of reinstalling Mac OS X

  • IMovie Project contents gone missing – what's broken and where is it all?

I used the latest iMovie (iLife 09) on an dual-core Intel Mac tower to make a 6-minute movie for a client. First time I've ever used iMovie. Worked great and I subsequently used iDVD to burn it for standard DVD player viewing. Now when I open the original iMovie project there is nothing there although it's file size indicates there is clearly content. Nothing appears when I move my cursor around the screen and the project name does not appear at the top. I don't know how an iMovie project tracks its content "links". I'm wondering if I may have moved some files or renamed them and the iMovie project cannot find what it's looking for. Any idea what this newbie has done? Thank you all in advance.

It depends on whether you want to move everything (projects and events) or just the events which are the space consuming items.
Rather than go into a long winded reply here I suggest that you type the following topics into iMovie Help.
It is a great information resource:
    1. Copying or moving a project
    2. Copying or moving video from your event library
    3. Consolidating a project's media.
Your other disc should show up as an icon at the end of your project library and in the event library there is a disc button just to the right of Event Library.
    Hope that helps.
    Z
PS If you import directly into iMovie then you will have to move your imports to the other drive as per above.
Otherwise if you import video files to your computer then into iMovie, import them into your other drive instead of your primary.

  • What's broken here? Just the glass, or the LCD?

As the subject line says. I'm not sure which is broken, and I need to know to get an accurate price for repair from a local shop. I could take it in and get a quote, but not until after the weekend. See the linked photo below.
    http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/327/20121201150046.jpg
    Thanks!

Definitely the LCD Display is broken, that is shown in all the grays areas. The thing that bothers me in addition is that in the longest stretch of gray there is a diagonal line that goes from top left to bottom right. This is most likely the crack in the same LCD Display the video part of the screen with all the gray lines. If it is a front screen crack you should be able to see it yourself, very easily because the Front Glass is different than LCD Display. So definitely you need a new LCD Display for iPhone 3GS. I just checked with my Apple Store and they still perform front assembly repairs by the Genius in the Apple Store. It costs $99, so this is a good deal. You will get New Front Glass, New Digitizer, New LCD Display, New Home Button, New Front Midframe, New Earpiece Speakers, New Sensors. Call your Apple Store first to check, I think you will be happy. Then make Genius reservation and take to Apple for the $99 deal if you like.
