Boot to safe mode using the shift key. But it probably will not work. You need to boot into recovery mode.

I own a MacBook Pro (MAC OS X 10.6.8) that I purchased in 2011. when i open .jpg picture in photoshop on MAC the the background thumbnail in the layers panel looks like a white box with the brush inside instead of picture thumbnail. how to fix it?

Very easy. That means you have a "no layer thumbnails" option selected.
Go into the Layers Panel menu at the upper right of the Panel, choose Panel Options and you will see Thumbnail sizes to choose from.
    Select one, click OK.

  • Mac OS X Server 1.2(green box with S)

    Hello to everyone!
I have a Power Mac G4 2003 Mirror Drive Doors with dual 1.25 processors. I am in search of a very highly sought program called Mac OS X Server 1.2 - Although, it may or may not run on my system, I am still looking for this as I would like to get it for nostalgic reasons. Given the fact that OS 9 and os 8 can still be had these days, I have searched and searched to no avail for Mac OS X Server 1.2(1.0 is the older one) - I am talking about the one before Mac OS Server X 10.0.
Not only do I like the green box with the S on it, but also just would like to find this and buy it, and maybe tinker with it to get it to work on my G4. I believe I read somewhere that it was OS X Server 1.0 that worked with G3 processors, while 1.2 works with G4 processors.
Any and all help would be appreciated. Again, why is it so easy to find OS 9 and OS 8 and not this? Did Apple not produce enough of these? We are only talking just recently. 1999 or 2000 is not that long ago, and I believe this server software should still be easy to get, but alas! Its not.
    Thank you!

    Nadav-
You are the only person in the world who wants an old version of Server software. Most operations that need a server are running the latest \[10.5] or next-to-the-latest \[10.4]. There is no market for older versions than that. New versions with unlimited users cost US$1000. So only serious users buy it. There are not so many copies around. The software uses a serial-number system. If you get the discs, but no serial number, it will not run.
Mac OS X Server 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4 will install and run on any G3 on which you can install the same-numbered version of Mac OS X. You can install some newer unsupported versions using popular cheater programs. I have installed 10.3 Server on Beige G3s for use by Not-for-Profit Organizations that could not afford anything more expensive. Most uses for Server are I/O problems, not compute problems, so a fast computer in not needed, just fast Disk Access. When you have multiple Servers tied together, the high-availability of the XServe and XServe RAID are very desirable.

What does a flashing folder icon with a "?" inside mean?

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Suddenly I see the usual blue box with question mark inside mail messages instead of pix.
    That did not happen before.
It happened only on certain pages with Safari, like the google news feed which did not display pix.
However, this new mail problem is really disturbing.
I checked Little Snitch and port 80 is open.
    I checked java pref.
    I am at a loss.
    PLEASE HELP!

Suddenly I see the usual blue box with question mark inside mail messages instead of pix.
That indicates that your Mail preferences are setup to not display remote images in email messages. You should check Mail->Preferences->Viewing and make surre the box to 'Display remote images in HTML messages' is checked.
    I checked java pref.
Java has nothing to do with Mail, or displaying images in it or any browser.

  • Green box with registration marks appears from nowhere

...and I'd like to get rid of it, but how and what is it?
In any AICS3 document I open, my default is now an art board that is 200"x200" with a green rectangle about 60"x12" in its center. The green rectangle has registration marks on its corners. Even if I change the size of my art board to something smaller, the green rectangle remains. I've gone through all the preferences and everything in the View menu, but it is not affected by anything. It does not seem to be a template. Can anyone help me: 1. get rid of this annoying (but apparently benign) rectangle and 2. tell me what it is. It does not seem to do anything. Needless to say, it cannot be selected and is not referred to in any of the palettes. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try Object > Unlock All and Object > Crop Area > Release. Also look for a locked layer in the Layers panel.

  • Clear Box with White Outline?

On my MacBook Pro, a clear/transparent box will occasionaly appear on top of all of my other applications and prevents me from doing anything. I've never seen this before and I can't seem to get rid of it without restarting my computer. Is this something in Universal Access or some other program that someone is familiar with. I have zoom and voice over both off and it still happens. Could it be something from the new trackpad? I can move the box around but it prevents me from using anything that it is behind. How do it get this off and prevent it from happening. Oh, and it has a white box around it.

I suspect that the problem is that the Drag Lock is stuck on.
Try freeing it by double-clicking a few times on mouse or trackpad. If that fails, try clearing the checkbox in the Mouse or Trackpad pane of System Preferences.
If that doesn't work, then try trashing the file
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist and/or ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist
Then log out and back in again, or restart.
    Good luck,

  • What is cause for green screen when Apple Hardware Test is assessing memory

My PowerBook G4 1.33 GHZ with 256MB RAM was giving messages about needing to restart on each start-up attempt. Of interest when the the AirPort wireless card (that had not been working) was removed, the restart problem resolved. When the AirPort card was re-inserted, it functioned correcly allowing connections to a wireless router. The restart message did not return and the computer appeared to be functioning normally. Also of note I had reinstalled the system software and had run multiple updates thinking that the intial restart error messages were related to a system software problem. Now, when I run the Apple Hardware Test the first three items "pass" (AirPort, Logic Board, Mass Storage) but, after about 3 minutes of testing the nest topic, "Memory," the screen turns green and blue (reminiscent of the dreaded "blue screen" in Windows). I have to power off the computer and it will restart without problems. Of note the Apple Hardware Test did the same thing before I reinstalled the system software and re-installed the AirPort card. Does this point to a problem with the built in RA<?<br>

Thanks Rodney! Your explanation was correct. I had not waited long enough for the test process to complete. When I watched carefully, it was not until just after the memory section and the beginning of the V RAM testing that the screen started to change apperances. There were multiple changes until finally the original dialogue box reappered. I had previously been too impatient.

  • What program caused this error message with a pic of coins and money bag?

Today I was running the following programs:
    Mail.app
    TextWrangler
    Safari
    iTunes
I was composing an email when an error message popped up. It was a small self-contained window with an image of coins and a money bag on the left side and text that read:
    An unexpected error has occurred
(ValueError: invalid literal for float(): N/A)
There were 2 buttons, "Quit" and "Continue". Continue was highlighted. Software Update then also popped up. I took screenshots of the message and I then opened up the Activity Monitor and took screenshots of all of the processes running. I would post the images, but I don't know if that is possible on this site. I hit the quit button and there seems to be no problems.
Anyway, I am very curious about what program, process, or plugin, put up this message, especially since I was not running any program related to finance. Does anyone have any ideas??
    Thanks
    Paul

OK, so you need to have your pics on a web server, then you can show them here. I will give it a shot. Here is the error message:
And here are the processes that were running:

  • What is causing a sound problem with new Cinema Display 27 ?

My new 27 Cinema Display intermittently won't play sound when connected to my MB Pro. Restarting the computer doesn't fix it, and all the display audio settings are correct etc. Phoned Apple Support and the fix was to unplug the power from the back of the cinema display to reset the screen controller. This keeps happening - is this a software bug ? Hardware problem ? Is it fixable or something that is a legacy of the 24 inch cinema display problems ? I really like the screen size but don't want a display that I keep having to plug/unplug in order to watch hulu, play itunes etc. Apple won't declare my screen to be defective even though this has happened a few times but can't tell me how to fix the problem either. Am going to send it back for a refund - don't know whether a different display will have the same problem or if this is a generic cinema display defect. Thanks for any insight.

There are threads in this forum and MacRumors where numerous people are having this issue. When I contacted support they had me reload the software update and reset the power. I am encouraging everyone to contact Apple every time it happens so we can get a fix for the problem. It is the general consensus that this is a software issue that can be corrected if we can get Apple to work on it. I agree with you I expect my $1000 monitor to work properly all the time.
