What is causing my monitor to sleep

I have recently reinstalled Arch on my desktop and now I have the problem of my monitor going to sleep. I am using a minimal kde setup and I do not have any screensavers enabled. I believe a base install of arch linux is setup in a way that the monitor sleeps after a certain time of inactivity. I have had this problem in the past, but I found out the secret to it and fixed it, but over the course of time I forgot how. Any ideas? I have already looked at this thread (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33497) and tried the fix there involving putting those four lines in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but that didn't work for me.

More info, try: "man xset"
this didn't work for me, I'll post my .xinitrc to make sure you guys can "crowd source" it.

  • Waking computer monitors from sleep causes FCP capture to fail

I'm having trouble capturing DVCam material from an HDV deck (in PAL), using FCP 6.0.3. As I'm doing a long digitize (several hours of material at a time), I like to put my monitors to sleep while capturing. Normally, this works fine (and hasn't caused any problems - I've been doing this for a long time). On this current project, every time I wake the monitors to check the progress of digitizing, it appears to cause FCP & cancel capturing the clip that it is currently capturing.
I've cleared out & reset all of my preferences, zapped the P-Ram, made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
Does anybody have a suggestion for me about why waking the monitors would be throwing the capturing process out of whack?

I've ... made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
You're capturing to an 85% full USB2.0 drive ?? I'm betting that when you wake the monitor you're seeing an error ... but not because of the waking of the monitor! FWIW you should always try to keep your drives less than 80% full ... beyond that and you're asking for serious performance degradation. That and of course USB drives are wholly unsuited for video production with FCP. (FCP really doesn't like devices that cannot handle sustained data transfer).
That said, what monitor are you using? How are you putting them to "sleep"? How are you waking them? Exactly is the error that you are seeing .. or is there no error but the capture just stops? Do you lose all the footage captured to that point or do you at least keep the footage captured so far?

  • What is causing my Mac to crash during the sleep mode?

    Hello!
I would to have your help on this situation that i am having for a month or so...  Ok... it started about a month ago, I turned it on and all of the sudden, it shut down, then rebooted on its own... (actually it rebooted like 3 or 4 times before running the system) I thought that it was odd.  I had my Tech to look over and see what was causing to crash and all... he could not find anything then we all decided to leave it running all time... so we did.  a week or two later, it just crashed when i woke the sleep mode and it went on the usual route as crashed and rebooted two or three times before going back to normal.
sound familiar to you guys?  after that happened, we turned off the sleep mode and so far, it is doing good...  decided not to update the system's Security software because it may have something to cause the mac to crash down...
    the mac is  2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 Gb 667 MHZ DDR2 FB-DIMM, running on 10.6.8
    appreciate your help on this.

One more thing....  it makes weird sounds as well... very high pitch sounds that you hear in movies where UFO flying by while it is doing the rebooting...

Last day my mac pro showed a shadow in its display center. Does anybody know what can cause?
I use to use it a litle, cause i'm new on macs and still use pc based on windows.

Who made the monitor?  Is it even Apple?
If you have the right connections, try swapping out the monitor with your PeeCee monitor and see if the problems stays or goes.   But does sound like a monitor issue.  But then, hard to know what you mean by shadow...

    Hi applecore_eater,
When Leopard came out, machines were shipping with Tiger for 3-5 months after it's release. So the fact that you bought a machine with Leopard still installed is not uncommon, especially considering we're not even a month into release. Matter of fact, I'd be surprised to see a lot of machines (unless CTO) that are coming with Snow Leopard.
The battery issue is not specific to Snow Leopard or the MacBook Air. I've deployed SL to about 15-20 MacBook Airs and all of them have been perfectly fine (batteries).

  • MacPro: How to prevent scanning for monitor after sleep?

    Hi everybody,
So here's the deal: When I power up my MacPro or wake it up from sleep, it seems to do a quick search for connected displays and activates only the DVI output(s) which have a monitor connected to them. While I understand that behavior at boot time, I find it really troublesome when waking the MacPro from sleep.
    Here's why:
I rarely turn off the MacPro completely, I much rather put it to sleep when I'm away. What I do, however, is to turn off the huge 30'' display that drains a lot of power when left on. When I come back, I just have to turn the display on before turning on the MacPro and everything is fine.
However, there's one scenario where I systematically get caught and that's really... really annoying! It happens in combination with the EyeTV Software. When I'm away by the time a scheduled show starts, the EyeTV wakes up the MacPro and starts recording. That's exactly what it's supposed to do. However, since the monitor is turned off by the time the MacPro wakes up, it won't recognize it and the graphics card won't send any signal! So when I come back to the computer and turn on the screen, It says "No Signal". The solution at this point is putting the MacPro to sleep briefly and resume it with the display turned on this time. However, putting the Mac to sleep while EyeTV is recording a show causes the recording to be rendered useless.
Is there a way to prevent the MacPro from rescanning for monitors after sleep? Or maybe there's a key combination to let it rescan manually?
As far as I remember, it didn't do the rescan-monitors-after-sleep thing under Tiger, but not sure about that...
Any help would be highly appreciated!

    Greetings,

What I do, however, is to turn off the huge 30'' display that drains a lot of power when left on.
The display should go to "Active-off mode" (amber power light) when the computer sleeps. This uses less than 2 watts.

If you do want the monitor off (e.g. to save power while EyeTV is recording), you could use a DVI Detective

  • Screen goes white every time it is moved, what is causing it?

Everytime i move the screen on my 13.3" macbook the screen goes white and i have to move it to get it to display anything again, i would like to know what is causing it and how to resolve the problem.

I believe that system has a hall sensor on it to detect when the lid is closed so it can put the system to sleep and/or disable the monitor so it can be used with an external monitor only. If the sensor is marginal or has a bad cable, it may intermittently cut the monitor on and off, and may likewise put the system to sleep. One way to check would be to plug in an external monitor and if the laptop's screen cuts off or doesn't show up, start using the trackpad and press on a non-typing key like the shift key. If the external display suddenly pops and becomes active while the laptop display remains black, it's probably a problem with the sensor or the cable/connection. You might be able to fool the sensor into kicking on and off by moving a magnet over it. It's located on the left had side of the base with the unit opened up, and right over the audio output plug.
I know of some people that put a small magnet right over the hall sensor's location so the laptop display turns off and they use the system with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If fooling with magnets, make sure they're small and don't get them close to the hard drive because a strong magnet can wipe them out.
I don't know if this will help you much, but it might.

  • I am using an iPad with Apple TV and airplay with a projector in my classroom.  The mirroring cuts out and back on several times during use. Any suggestions on what's causing it and how to fix it?

I am using My iPad with Apple TV, Airplay and projector in my classroom.  The projector screens blanks out and back on several times during a presentation. It seems like a problem with connection but I'm not sure as it comes back on after a few seconds. Any idea of what is causing this and how it can fixed?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • What's causing this plugin process crashing?

I'm getting the following at least once a day. Something is crashing, but it's not taking down Safari or the system. Can anyone determine what's causing it? This particular report seems related to Safari, at least that was the open application in the foreground. However it's happened at other times as well so it may not be Safari specific.

The sample looks way too dark ( gray snow, gray/blue sky ). You're probably in good shape while in ProPhoto 16bit RGB, but I believe you're clipping the image...especially for web. Try saving a copy of the original and, instead of converting to Adobe RGB / Relative Colorimetric, keep both images in ProPhoto / Perceptual. So, you now have two files: 1.) 300ppi, and 1.) 72ppi...one for print, one for web. But, the difference is they are both still 16bit from the original RAW file. Now, for the print version, convert to Adobe RGB / 8bit / 300ppi. For the web version, size it to whatever you need for display at 100% no scaling, no additional compression, no more resizing. Convert the web version to sRGB / 8bit / .jpg @ 4 ( no need to save at a higher compression ). By keeping the rendering in "Perceptual", you may retain more gamut than an Adobe RGB / Relative Colorimetric. Try a generic test on one of your "problem" images and see if there is an improvement. Some of the other posts regarding your monitor may be another issue ( banding, splotches, etc. ).

  • When I put my iphone 4s into my pocket (pants or coat) and move it around, the phone beeps/makes a tone. I can't figure out what is causing the noise.

I have a strange problem. When I put my iphone 4S into my pocket (pants or coat) and move it around, the phone makes a beep noise/tone. I can't figure out what is causing the noise. It doesn't sound like any of my regular applications. Maybe it is the lock noise but I can't tell for sure.  More movement makes more beeps.  Even walking with my phone in my pocket creates beeps.  The IOS is 7.0.4 (11B554a).  Anyone else have this crazy problem?

  • What would cause a lot of redo or logswitches in an instance with no users?

    Hello all,
I've got a database instance that is set up as a 3 node RAC cluster. I don't think this is RAC related, but the database issues is causing RAC issues.
The instance has been set up, and later will be used to temporarily hold data while another box is being rebuilt. This instance has not had anything imported into it...there are no users connecting to it.
However, it seems to be generating a LOT of redo and archive log traffic. So much so..that overran the db_recovery_file_dest_size of 8GB.
I'd not been monitoring this instance like I said before....nothing is in it, and noone should be connecting to it...but it filled up the 8G..and then, started writing tons of logs to /u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/instance1/INSTANCE1_node3/trace/ saying it was full...and eventually filling up the /u01 filesystem..causing things to crash.
I fixed all this by deleting the alert logs to make room. I then did an RMAN job to move the archive logs to tape..and it came back up.
However, just an hour later...I see over 15% of the FRA is filled up again?!?!?
Any ideas on where to start to troubleshoot this? I don't know what is causing this thing to generate redo at all.....
    Thanks in advance,
    cayenne

I've got a database instance that is set up as a 3 node RAC clusterThat would mean 1 database with 3 instances.
Are all 3 instances writing a high volume of redo ? Or is it only one of the three instances ?
When you check for scheduled jobs in DBA_JOBS and DBA_SCHEDULER_JOBS, check all 3 instances.

  • What else caused my laptop to overheat?

I described in one of my post a few weeks ago about a problem described as livekernelevent 1033. My screen suddenly tinted in pink and turns black and Windows will crash afterwards.

Most people say that the problem is caused by GPU failure. For now, Windows (Vista) will start normally but I can only see the display using external monitor. I found out that the problem will happen again when the temperature gets too hot. The CPU and GPU idle temperature is around 60 degree celcius and around 95 degree celcius when they're busy. The screen will turn black when the temprature exceeds 95 degree celcius.
I already took out the fan, clean it thoroughly until there's no dust at all. Furthermore, I invested $25 for new thermal paste but the problem still happen. Even in power saver mode, the temperature range is 60 to 95 degree celcius and the laptop bottom side feels really hot to the touch.
What else caused my laptop to overheat? Is it worth my money to bring it to computer techncian?

The fan is running at 3250 RPM. CPU temperature is 54 degree celcius at idle, 90 when it;s busy.
When I increase the speed fan to the maximum setting, the tempetarute is just around 3 degrees lower. I think this is still hot isn't it? Besides, these are all done in 'power saver' mode. I know that the computer was not running that hot before.
