What is causing random memory pressure surges?
Running OS X Mavericks on a late 2012 iMac 27' 3.4GHz system with 32GB physical memory, with increasing frequency my system is slowed down to a crawl by random surges in memory useage-- can someone provide me some insight as to the cause?
I'm sorry, I mis-spoke. Launchd is responsible for the largest "ports" count by far (1796-1830). Otherwise, it appears to be some sort of kernel issue at 1.40GB.
Clearly, I'm exposing my own ignorance and will take this question down and call Apple Care Tech Support-- sorry to bother you!

Lifeblog causing random memory problems
I have the N73 Music Edition phone and sometimes I would get the "Memory Full! Please delete some data! error and I have put nothing in my phone memory, only in my memory card and it's 200 MB free.
I checked the phone memory's memory details and it says something is mysteriously occupying 39MB of memory. So I went to Lonely Cat Games' Xplore and unhid all hidden and system files and there it was in the Lifeblog folder, the file "lifeblog.db" taking up 39MB!
I observed this and sometimes it would turn back to KB size but when the memory full error appears, it's a very big size again!
What is this file and why is it doing this? I've updated my firmware and still this problem persists! Can anyone please help me get rid of this annoying problem please?Message Edited by chrysley on 18-Jul-200708:16 PMI've responded to this in your other post :

The only problem I'm having with my t/bolt (apart from the crappy touchy keyboard) is my memory card dismounts and cites a read only error. I'm looking for a software conflict or a setting or a suggestion...besides dropping it in the toilet.
It comes with a class 4 micro SD card. Which is usually fine.
You can buy the class 10 cards cheap from Amazon. I think I saw something about having a sale on them for Father's Day. I just bought two of them and they didn't cost an arm and a leg. -
What is causing random shut downs on new iMac?
I have a new iMac which is shutting down without any warning! Anyone know if this is a known issue? Is it software or hardware?
Hi FPMS
That sounds like partially seated or a dislodged ram module! I would first check to see if they are both seated correctly, you'll need to push real hard on each module with both thumb's. Use the iMac Installing or replacing memory link below to assist you if someone else installed them for you.

Problem description:
I have ordered a new iMac but my current one seems to be running really slowly. I believe it to be a memory related problem but can’t seem to identify what is causing it. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The high number of Page Outs and killed processes show very high memory pressure.
Try adding memory, but be sure it is high quality, Mac certified memory such as that from OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com -

Hello MGiambri,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your iPod is displaying lines on its screen. To troubleshoot this issue I'd like you to first reset the iPod:
How to reset iPod
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If the issue persists after that, restore the iPod back to its factory settings by following the instructions in the following article:
Restoring iPod to factory settings
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
Ultimately if that did not resolve the issue, please look into getting your iPod serviced.
How to get your iPod serviced
It's easy! Additional answers to common service questions can be found in the iPod Service FAQ.
In North America, simply complete the online iPod service request form to receive service for your iPod or accessory. You can also schedule a service appointment with either an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
In Europe, please schedule a service appointment with either an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Our online repair service is also available.
In Australia, simply complete the online iPod service request form or schedule a service appointment with a local Apple Authorised Service Provider.

How do I find out what is causing a random black screen on iMac?
Hello I get random black screen on a iMac and I haven't made any hardware changes. How can I find out what is causing this?
Thanks
Jer
iMac 2.66 core 2 duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8You can do an SMC and PRAM reset. These won't hurt anything and 'might,' maybe help the screen issue. If it doesn't, then take it into an Apple store or AASP for their guidance and advance testing diagnostics.
SMC:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM:
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
Kernel_task using 16 Million Terabytes of memory - what's causing this?
According to Activity Monitor kernel_task is using 16,777,216 TB of virtual memory.
Obviously, there is some (overflow?) bug somewhere (is that number the maximum allowable memory on a 64-bit system?), and Virtual Memory doesn't really mean much in the real world, but is there a way to track down what is causing this, given that kernel_task going wrong can bring down the whole system.
This reappears after a restart - and in fact for the first time in memory my computer locked up a few days ago, so I'm wondering if there is a connection.
ThanksYou have a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro and your log is showing a problem with the NVIDIA graphic card.
These MacBooks have got a defective NVIDIA graphic card that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Fortunately, Apple is repairing all of those MacBooks for free, so make a backup of your data and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller -
What would cause 16ghz iphone 4 to reboot at random times?
what would cause my 16ghz iphone 4 to randomly reboot without warning? it also fails to save pictures some of the time.
I am having this same exact problem with my iPhone 4. It plays "9 to 5 - Dolly Parton" (funny I know) at random times. Sometimes at start up, when using camera, when plugging in charger or car charger, or for just no reason at all. I am still in the first 30 days of owning the phone so I will be taking it to AT&T tomorrow.
-
My Iphone 5 does this weird thing where it just freezes, some random vertical lines show up, and shuts off. Does anyone know what the cause of this is?
Backup and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

I heard that XML Publisher requires lot of memory for sources/features,So I want to know whether XML Publisher can be one of the cause for memory problem to occur or this shared memory is not related with XML Publisher sources at all.
Please advice.
Many thanks..
Suman
Edited by: suman.g on 25-Nov-2009 04:03Hi Robert,
Thanks for your quick reply...
Apps version: 11.5.10.2
database version: 9.2.0.8.0
As I am a beginner in this so dont know much about this.. Can you please guide me on this.
DBAs has increased the shared memory and problem has resolved but here I am more concrened whether the XML Publisher was or can be one od the cause for shared memory problem. Is there any way to check that or this occurs randomly and we can not check this.
Please advice something. -
What is causing my Mac to be so slow?
Ok so I have a 2011 Mac Mini, upgraded to 8gb of RAM running Mavericks. Over the past few months, it has been performing poorly during certain tasks, for example:
-When watching videos, both on and offline, picture will randomly freeze for a couple of seconds, while audio continues
-Every-day tasks such as right clicking to open the mini menu that appears or opening a folder in Finder (rainbow wheel appears)
-Loading a webpage - nothing will happen for a few seconds, then it connects and everything loads very quickly
So I backed up using Time Machine, and wiped the harddrive, reinstalled via USB installation (without restoring backup), and everything was super quick again. So I restored just my applications and files (ie. not my settings) in the hope my mac would maintain its new found speed.
It didn't.
In fact, it has regained exactly the same issues as last time. So my question is, what can I do to find out what is causing this slow down?
Thanks,
MaxHi Linc,
Many thanks for your continued support, I am afraid the Mac is still as it was even after the OS X Yosemite Public Release Install. Here are the results for the new test I carried out as per your detailed instructions:
Many thanks,

Every night at the office, I run a script that rsyncs files from our production server to my local machine, as a backup just in case, and also until we get a git solution setup. I would then use Time Machine, setup on a partition on the main drive, to keep incremental backups of the files.
Here's the problem though. The initial backup, goes without a hitch. However, every time I run a new rsync, and then start a backup, when I come back the next morning, I find a window has popped up saying "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory". The backup itself is only 50GB on a 1TB drive (the backup partition half that). I've had activity monitor open, and it looks like whenever backup is running, it takes up at least 2GB of real memory. I don't understand how it works with the initial backup, but the moment I run an rsync and backup the up to date version, it causes these issues.
Ideas? Thanks, Klaus. No one in that discussion thread actually explains the meaning of this warning or what might cause it. It's quite possible that my friend will never see the same warning again, but it would be good to know what triggered the warning and what should be done about it beyond restarting the computer to delete the swap files.

Photoshop CS4 for Mac What can cause the error: Plug-in failed to load - NO VERSION
With Photoshop CS4 for Mac I install the Kodak Plug-in DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional v2.1.0. When Photoshop starts I get an error:
Plug-ins that failed to load:
DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional v2.1.0 NO VERSION - - from the file “DigitalAIRProv2.plugin”Flash:
Connections
Kuler
This plug-in works fine on my Mac Pro with Photoshop CS4 and OS 10.6 but fails on a new Macbook Air.
Reinstalling the plug-in did not make any difference. What can cause this error? Thanks Chris, That was my first thought too but this same plug-in works on another installation of CS4. This is a Mac installation and the plug-in is Universal so it should work. Is there any other possible cause for this error? Would Photoshop refuse to load a plug-in in a low memory situation?
Also, The Flash extensions:Connections and Kuler are working OK, I just copied a little more out of the System Info report than I needed to.
