What is causing recent mac data use spike?
I have a Hughesnet internet data use limit of 15Gb per month which typically for my family is sufficient. As of last Thursday April 10 around 7AM my data use shot up and continued consistently high every hour. It started at 200 - 300 Mb / hour, jumped to ~550Mb / hour at 2AM 4/11/14, jumped again to 1 - 2 Gb / hour 7AM 4/11/14 and continued until all the data had been used ~9AM 4/12/14. I am using the Hughesnet utility to show what was used (after the fact) and I use Activity Monitor to what real time data use. I think it would be helpful to have a way of graphing the data use by process realtime if that exists so I can see what exact process is causing the data use. I do not have any virus software running.
As of Sunday 4/13/14 having no data left I contacted Hughesnet and began to troubleshoot the problem. I disconnected everything from the internet and shut down my wireless modem. All that has been connected since then (today is 4/16/14) is my iMac which is directly connected to my Hughesnet modem. I was given an additional 2Gb for troubleshooting. I left my iMac alone for 2 days. Very little data was used and almost no programs were running when I started using it again around 11:30AM 4/15/14. Unfortunatly, as my wife started using the iMac for a few hours that data use went up again and used up all the data. One thing i noticed was that the data use coincided with iMail being on.
How can i identify the problem and stop it?
Gmail is an intentionally broken implementation of IMAP that often causes problems with Mail. The problem seems to have gotten worse in Mavericks. Google has no incentive to make Gmail work well, or at all, in any mail client, because the company makes money by delivering targeted ads via the Web. The Gmail servers analyze your messages to glean information about you and your contacts that Google can then sell to marketers, or to anyone who will pay for it. You agreed to those terms when you registered a Gmail address.
I suggest either not to use Gmail at all, or to access it through the website as Google intends. You might get better results with another email client. I don't recommend any one in particular.
If you insist on trying to make Gmail work with Mail, the following links may help:

What causes my iphone5 data to spike to 300K at 6:39 AM while on wifi?
what causes my iphone5 data to spike to 300K at 6:39 AM while on wifi?
Hi Cvandeusen,
That is a great question! There are multiple ways that your device can be using data in the background. As a consumer, I understand the importance of monitoring your data usage. I want to make sure we get this resolved right away. For further assistance please follow me MatthewS_VZW and then DM me with your contact information so I can reach out to you directly. I look forward to hearing from you soon, thanks!

What could cause the lock in my preferences to seemingly to click open on there own,I use my home wifi network which is private and have never given out that password either for my network or preferences password.....help,Thank you
You're welcome.
Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception. -
What is causing my Mac to be so slow?
Ok so I have a 2011 Mac Mini, upgraded to 8gb of RAM running Mavericks. Over the past few months, it has been performing poorly during certain tasks, for example:
-When watching videos, both on and offline, picture will randomly freeze for a couple of seconds, while audio continues
-Every-day tasks such as right clicking to open the mini menu that appears or opening a folder in Finder (rainbow wheel appears)
-Loading a webpage - nothing will happen for a few seconds, then it connects and everything loads very quickly
So I backed up using Time Machine, and wiped the harddrive, reinstalled via USB installation (without restoring backup), and everything was super quick again. So I restored just my applications and files (ie. not my settings) in the hope my mac would maintain its new found speed.
It didn't.
In fact, it has regained exactly the same issues as last time. So my question is, what can I do to find out what is causing this slow down?
Thanks,
MaxHi Linc,
Many thanks for your continued support, I am afraid the Mac is still as it was even after the OS X Yosemite Public Release Install. Here are the results for the new test I carried out as per your detailed instructions:
Many thanks,
Max

What is causing my Mac to crash during the sleep mode?
Hello!
I would to have your help on this situation that i am having for a month or so... Ok... it started about a month ago, I turned it on and all of the sudden, it shut down, then rebooted on its own... (actually it rebooted like 3 or 4 times before running the system) I thought that it was odd. I had my Tech to look over and see what was causing to crash and all... he could not find anything then we all decided to leave it running all time... so we did. a week or two later, it just crashed when i woke the sleep mode and it went on the usual route as crashed and rebooted two or three times before going back to normal.
sound familiar to you guys? after that happened, we turned off the sleep mode and so far, it is doing good... decided not to update the system's Security software because it may have something to cause the mac to crash down...
the mac is 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 Gb 667 MHZ DDR2 FB-DIMM, running on 10.6.8
appreciate your help on this. One more thing.... it makes weird sounds as well... very high pitch sounds that you hear in movies where UFO flying by while it is doing the rebooting...

What's causing my mac to crash?
I'm running a Macbook Pro, 2008 model. For about a week, my mac has started to completely freeze up. I'm assuming that this is a crash. The only solution I have found is to hold down the power key for a few seconds until it shuts off. When the startup chime sounds, more often than not it will freeze again before the login screen apppears. Multiple reboots usually result in firing my machine back up.
The only change I can think of that I have made is installing the software and drivers for a Brother printer/scanner.
Also, this error code appeared upon restart, maybe this could help us figure this out.

I'm running Snow Leopard on a 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
For the last two weeks, my machine has been freezing up, with no particular cause that I can infer a pattern from. It will either completely freeze, and the cursor won't move at all, or it will move, but I can't click on anything or do a restart via the keyboard shortcut. The cursor does wierd things during this, such as verticle lines appearing in a square shape (this picure is turned sideways...sorry).
When it freezes up, I have to manually power off to restart. This usually leads to another problem: during the white screen with the Apple logo and the chime, the spinning cog will stop spinning after a few seconds, and it will freeze up indefinately. I have to turn off/on sometimes 10 or 15 times to get it to start up properly. When it does boot up, it runs fine, just like always, but sooner or later, it will crash again.
Here's what I've tried: Repairing disk permissions, running the hardware diagnostic with the osx disc (everything checked out ok), I've verified the disk (seems to be ok), and I've carefully monitored the temperature of the machine, which hasn't gone unusually high.
When the machine won't boot up, I've tried Safe Boot (doesn't work, still freezes) and resetting the PRAM (doesn't work).
Any ideas? -
What is causing my excessive data usage?
Hi there All,
I normally receive my allocated data bundle (300MB) from my service provider on the 14th of every month. So this month i checked in the morning to make sure i did receive it, but i only got 279MB. So I called in and they said i made an internet connect at 01h45 in the morning. Now this is an impossibility as I am asleep at this time. So I cleared my internet history and thought I would monitor it. Well this morning I checked again and my data balance is 75MB. I checked my internet history, it was empty. Phoned my service provider and they said i made internet connections at 00h30, 01h22, 01h30 in the morning. What on earth can be using my data early in the morning.
My automatic downloads are off, so it cant be that. I do not have facebook, ot whatsapp, or twitter or any social media things. So what can be using my data so excessively. this is the first month that i have experienced this. The only difference i can tell from the previous months is i downloaded skype, but i am asleep when my data is being used, so it cant be that.
Any hints for me please?I checked that yesterday and it wasn't set to do so... So I'm really confused. My fetch data is also on manually!

What is causing my Mac Mini to crash while running Mountain Lion?
Hello!
I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini that I had 10.7 installed on for quite some time. Everything worked really well, and I was very pleased with it. I upgraded my Macbook Air to 10.8, and have been very pleased with it as well. Not the case though, with the Mac Mini, since upgrading it to 10.8.
Currently it's running on 10.8.1 (12B19), and it is crashing all the time. Programs of all kinds (iTunes, Skype, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc...) will just randomly vanish off the screen, and are followed by a "________ quit unexpectedly" window, to report the problem. In each and every case (usually +5 times a day) I report all of the crashes.
Several times as well, I have also had the entire computer crash and reboot itself. That is perhaps the most frustrating of all. Most times the screen will turn black, it will make it's "ding" sound, and then begin restarting itself. Sometimes the screen will freeze and the spinning loading icon will appear on the screen for 10-15 seconds, and then it will black-out and reboot itself.
I've tried to deal with it for a while now, but I'm getting a little impatient at it and I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing the same thing. I have TONS of error report logs, so if you'd like to see one, I'll be glad to post it.
Thanks in advance!Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Cheers, Tom -
Recently purchased a used IPad 2 but it still has previous owner's data. I've been told not to sync it to my computer as it will cause problems. What do I need to do to make it compatible with accounts on my mac and ipod touch? Thanks for any and all help!
You can wipe the iPad's contents completely by going to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. This will remove all of the previous user's apps, data, settings and so on from the iPad and you can set it up as your own.
-
I have recently got a new replacement iPhone 4. Since I got this I have found that my data allowance is getting used up during the night while my phone is charging on the bedside table. How an I find out what is causing this and stop it happening? Some nights the usage is 150 meg!
You can not access the backup directly.
Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
What is it you are worried about losing that isn't already on your current device? -
I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?
Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
That should do it.

I recently purchased a used ibook g4 and i want to update to itunes 10.2. It tells me that I need to update to mac os 10.5. From what I gather I need to purchase the mac os 10.5 but there are a lot of different options and I dont know what I need to do. Can somebody point me in the right direction? I dont want to spend too much money because i just want my ipod touch to be compatible with my ibook. thank you
Hi
Your question is more suitable for the 10.4's General Forum rather than 10.4 OSX Server. Post here instead:

I'm able to transfer iPhotos from Mac to MacPro but data I've added to photos does not transfer. What am I missing? Tried using Thunderbolt, AirDrop, Flash drive with no success. Do I have to use iCloud for 800 vacation photos or re-enter all the data after transfer?
There is no support for mirroring or syncing iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries. You can however export partial Aperture libraries on one mac and merge them into other libraries on a second Mac.
To transfer your edited photos open your photolibrary in Aperture and and collect the edited photos in an album. Then select the album and use the command "File export > Album as new library". This will export all edited photos as a new Aperture library. Copy this library to your other Mac and import it with "File < Import > Library to your other photolibrary on that computer (assuming you are having the same Aperture version on both macs). When merging the new library into your Aperture library, opt to keep the newer versions from the imported library. iPhoto 9.5.1 will be able to open these merged Aperture 3.5.1 libraries. -
Recently while using my iMac the display will just cut off but the machine is still running and I have to press the power button to get the display to cut back on. What is causing this?
Look in System Preferences/Energy Saver.

After downloading IOS6 my data use soared to 199mb. I never have used more than 50 in a month. I have an iPhone 4 and 4S, it only happened to the iPhone 4 that my wife uses as a phone away from WiFi. Stan
also, this article applies to iPhone 5, but maybe it's starting to affect 4's?

Native Supplicant "NAK requesting to use PEAP instead"
Hello, We have a Cisco ISE infrastructure in place and we're experiencing seemingly random occurrences of users failing authentication because they're trying PEAP vs EAP. Does anyone know if it is possible to force the native Windows supplicant to us

Is it possible to download only ONE MONTH of a calendar into iCal
I have downloaded an ocean tides calendar for a trip. I only need the data for certain dates, but I have about 8 entries per day for the whole year. I know I can turn the ocean tides calendar on or off, but I would prefer limiting the number of days
