What is causing Time Machine to momentary freeze my system?

Every 60 minutes when time machine starts its backup routine my entire system momentarily freezes. Audio stops, cursor freezes, then a few moments later the system is running as usual. I have disabled drive sleep, display sleep. The backup drive is an internal drive. Memory is usually between 45% and 65% capacity - not maxed out. CPU usage is minimal. Most of the time I am programming, so this is happening during basic text editing, not during cpu/memory intensive audio/video/3d processing. I'm on a late 2008 mac pro with 10gigs of ram, and a new radeon 5770 video card. It was also happening with the stock video card that died on the reboot after I updated to 10.8.3 :-{.

I beleive this has started since the 10.8.1 update. It is happening every hour on the hour so to speak  - exactly when time machine is starting. It has become very intrusive - just in the middle of some important coding and then I'm frozen. I'd prefer to set a timer to take a break instead of being forced to do so!

The log shows nothing unusual.
Some "eco" or "green" drives may spin down when idle regardless of the Energy Saver setting. The application "KeepDriveSpinning" from developer Jon Stovell may help in that case, or there may be a way to change the behavior in the drive's firmware settings.

  • Time Machine back up freezes Finder, System Preferences and Time Machine

When I attempt to use time machine to back up to an external hard drive and come back to the computer I find that finder, time machine and system preferences are locked. I can open other software but those applications although "on" are not accessible.

    That's quite strange.
Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to a backup where this happened, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

    QUESTION: ANY SUGGESTIONS OR SOLUTIONS?????

See Pondini's TM FAQs for starters.

  • What exactly does Time Machine back up?

May seem a basic question. I've always assumed my home folder which, at the moment, weighs 120 Gb, give or take a kb. So why does TM report that it cannot complete backup to a 180 Gb external drive as it now needs 220 Gb, despite having done so for a number of years without a hitch?

Time Machine backs up your entire system (except for some things like system work files, most caches, trash, etc.), unless you specifically exclude things.
It sounds like your TM drive is too small -- it usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing up, to keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups.
It may also be trying to do a new, full backup. Some possible reasons for that are listed in #D3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If in doubt, see #A1 there. Download the TM Buddy widget and copy and post the messages here. That may clarify the situation.

  • Time Machine doesn't back up system disk but does complete second disk

I have set up Time Machine to back up my system disk and one additional internal drive. Two other internal drives are excluded. The backup disk is external. On the initial backup Time Machine gets only one file from the system drive even though it has recognized that there are 121.5 GB included on that drive, but it backs up all 133 GB from the second drive. BTW, I haven't excluded anything but the two other drives. Here's the log from TM Buddy:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Aeronomy1
Backup content size: 121.5 GB excluded items size: 3.5 MB for volume Macintosh HD
Backup content size: 133.6 GB excluded items size: 0 bytes for volume Aeronomy1
No pre-backup thinning needed: 311.66 GB requested (including padding), 792.03 GB available
Copied 1 files (0 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
Copied 2411 files (133.4 GB) from volume Aeronomy1.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
I've double-checked that the drive and partition are properly formatted with a GUID partition table. The only thing I can't do is turn off the antivirus for the backup drive--the system administrator has eliminated the ability to modify the Symantec Antivirus app. But since it is working in general, it wouldn't seem that is an issue.
Any help is appreciated for getting my main drive backed up!

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Before downloading lion, i want to backup my computer with time machine and a G-DRIVE Slim.  But how can i use time machine to only backup my system once?

Just wondering, how can i use time machine to only backup my system once? Just this once and not on a weekly basis?

Upgrade. My three year old Mac Pro and year old MacBook Pro have no problem. Both seem faster.
And there's your problem reading entirely subjective views on forums, from people that might or might not have decently maintained systems, good operating practices, or whatever....
Strangely, when most companies issue new software, it is because they believe (and believe they have checked) that it is better than the previous version.

  • Time Machine crashes and freezes the OS, I fixed it!

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) has experienced this week troubles when backing up with Time Capsule, and I searched on the community and the web where is a lot of same cases, but I didn't found any solution that fit on my case.
    The problem ?
Simply when I start a manual Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule it goes normal for several Gigs and crashes with no error massage and then the OS freezes when trying to stop or force close Time Machine.
    Then ?
The only thing to do for resuming the OS is to hard restart the device.
I found some advices on this community and other forums, but no chance. I will list some:
Open Disk Utility, and select the device's hard drive then choose "Repair disk permissions". You may try this on the backup disk if you are using an external drive for Time Machine.
If you are on an incremential backup, try to delete the old backup file (if you use a Time Capsule) or format (erase) the external drive using Disk Utility. So you start the backup over, even if that should take a long time to finish it may solve problem.
I have tried those steps, and I used both Time Capsule and an external drive for my tests, but I came with no results other than hard resetting my mac every time after a couple Gigs of backup and starts over.
    Solution?
The solution that fixed this error, is to open Option window on the Time Machine Preferences and to Add ( + button) your personal folders one at a time to the excluded items list, and try to backup, if it freezes try to Add another one and try over, until the backup succeeds, the last added folder should the one that causes the crash. you can remove the first added folder but keep the last one, and execute the backup again. For me, after adding System files and Applications folder, Music, Downloads, Pictures the last folder I added before the backup runs normal was the Movies folder. and then I removed all my folders keeping the Movies folder excluded I managed to backup my Mac to both external drive and Time Capsule smoothly again.
    Hope that will helps you.

  • Copying Mac App Store Apps may cause Time Machine to fail

    Hey folks,
My Time Machine backups started failing the other day with the "error occurred while copying files" error (asking me to run Disk Utility). I ran DU and the drive checked out fine. I eventually checked the backupd logs (Console> filter "backupd") and found that TM was stopping with Error: (-41) SrcErr:No Copying /Path/to/a/file/inside/aMacAppStoreApp. Then saying the backup stopped with error:11.
So I deleted the App and ran the backup again. This time it gave me the same error  on another MacAppStore App that I had installed. So I deleted that one too and then TM backup run successfully.
    Background:
    - There were only two MAS Apps installed (the two referenced above: Quick Note, ARD).
    - Both were installed after being downloaded to a different computer, copied to this one, and then a copy made into the Applications folder. They were working fine.
    - When I "installed" the Apps, I did not do a drag/drop copy, I did a copy/paste.
    - There were two copies of the each App on the filesystem. 1 copy in my "software installers" folder and 1 copy in the Applications folder. Only the copy in the Applications folder failed to backup. The unused copy in the installers folder backed up fine.
Once the backups were working. I then moved the Apps from the "software installers" folder to the Applications folder. I opened the applications and they worked fine. I then ran the backup and it worked fine as well.
So I'm not sure if Time Machine was failing because of my unusual way of copying them into the Applications folder or what? Thoughts? Either way, it seems like a strange thing to cause TM to completely fail.

It's not copy protection issue since after I recopied the App (using drag/drop) the backup worked fine.
You are allowed to copy MAS Apps from one computer to another and run them as long as the target computer is either authorized for the same MAS account or you login to the account that purchased the App.

  • LaCie "Eco Mode" causing Time Machine problems

I just purchased a LaCie P'9231, which is advertised as an Apple Store Exclusive. I've been having problems with it and Time Machine and I'm starting to think its due to the Eco Mode feature. I'd rather have the HD on all the time and turn "Eco Mode" completely off and I've unchecked the "Put the Hard Disk to Sleep..." option in Energy Saver. Still I'm looking at it right in front of me in Eco Mode (so it didn't help). Any drivers to instal or are others experienceing this problem? Thank you so much!!!!

I just encountered essentially the same problem with a new LaCie "USB 3.0" 3-terabyte d2 drive (part of their new "v3" series). Although it's called the "USB 3.0" drive, it actually has ports for eSata, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and Firewire 800 -- I use Firewire 800.
The manual says you can turn off Eco Mode using the LaCie Desktop Manager. I want it turned off because I have several drives and waiting for them to spin up one by one every time I use my Mac is unacceptable. Desktop Manager's Eco tab has a single button that takes you to the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, where I always have the 'Put the Hard Disk to Sleep..." option turned off. The manual says this will stop the drive from spinning down in Eco Mode.
Nevertheless, the drive always spins down after a few minutes of inactivity. Worse, it will NOT spin back up when I open the drive's window or drag a file onto it. Instead, it freezes the Finder so that I can do nothing on my Mac -- among other things, I can't drag the drive icon to the trash to dismount it. I have to turn the drive off using its power switch, which of course brings up an alert telling me that doing this might damage the drive and instead I should dismount it first -- and then the Finder comes back to life. According to Desktop Manager, I could also set up the button on the front of the drive so that pushing it will cause the drive to spin back up. I haven't bothered to try that because I am unwilling to have to turn my devices on and off by pushing hardware buttons all the time.
LaCie tech support just sent me a message telling me that the drive is designed so that you cannot turn off Eco Mode. That is directly inconsistent with the manual, so I assume tech support means that they still don't have the firmware in the drive working right. They released a firmware update in late August that supposedly fixes a wake/sleep problem, but reading between the lines of the tech support messages I received, that apparently relates only to a problem when your Mac goes to sleep -- I have mine set so that it never sleeps.
Bottom line: unless and until LaCie revises the firmware to allow the drive to keep spinning all the time -- as advertised -- this product is essentially unusable to me.

  • EFI Update Causes Time Machine Problems

After the EFI update today (10/12) Time Machine will no longer mount its disk image on an external network drive via AFP wireless connection. The external drive is presented through Ubuntu 8.10 with Netatalk 2.03. Anyone else having this problem yet, or better yet have a solution?

Fixed it! Mounting it in Disk Utility and repairing the file system worked. It should be noted however that I can't confirm the update was the cause of of this problem but, its some kawinky-**** huh?

  • What happens when Time Machine starts to fill up a drive?

Using Time Machine on a partitioned External HD has been an absolute snap! I love the app. My main disappointment with it is that it has no literature on HOW it works, and no real ways for me to set different controls for it other than on and off.
My question is that what happens when a drive starts to get full? I have about 30 gigs left on the partition, and I am wondering what Time Machine is going to do. Does it just delete the oldest material, or does it simply fill up and tell me to look at everything on there and decide to clear it all off. I hate that I don't know what will happen.
    -Jon

From what I've read (I've not gotten a drive full so I can't speak from experience), when the TM drive gets full, it will notify you that it's going to start deleting the oldest backups to make space for the new ones. This general behavior is mentioned in the Mac Help for Time Machine, though it makes no mention about notifying you before it deletes the old backups, so I'm not sure about that part.

  • What exactly is Time Machine?

I am fairly new to Apple sytems and software having progressed from PC to iPad and now to Pro Mac Laptop.. A lot of times in passing Apple, whether at their store or in emails talk about things like Time Machine and Thunder something or other and lot of other lingo and I really do not know what they are talking about. The literature available on websites does not go into sufficient detail to tell me exactly what these things are so I can evaualte whether I need them or not.  Can anyone direct me to where I can learn some of this stuff?

This Time Machine Tutorial should answer you questions. If you are serious about backing up Time Machine is good place to start. However in backup it's wise to have redundancy if you are serious about backing up. A popular method of redundant backup in addition to Time Machine is creating a Bootable Clone on another EHD. Both Carbon Copy Cloner & SuperDuper! will backup by creating Bootable Clones. Many people on these forums (including myself) use both TM and a Bootable Clone, I happen to use SD however many are very happy with CCC. Basic rules of thumb are
NEVER user the same EHD for TM and a Bootable Clone, the reason being is if that drive dies (and they all do eventually) you have lost ALL of your backup!
NEVER use the same EHD for storage that you use for backup. This is for the same reason as #1. In other words never store  data (music, photos, important documents) on a EHD that you use for backup.
