What is color range?

Hi. Can you please tell me what color range is?
Is that the similarity or the closest color of a color?
For example "Yellow" So the color range of a yellow is orange or red? or might be light yellow?

"Color range" is not any kind of technical term. It could mean just about anything (or nothing). You might have it confused with "color gamut," a semi-technical term popularly tossed around these days having to do with so-called "color managment" (calibration). Color gamut refers to the theoretical set or range of colors that can be produced in a particular "color space" or "color model" (CMYK, RGB), or process (device, printing method).
The main point of it is that, for example, there are many colors that an additive color model (RGB; a system that glows--generates its own light) can display that cannot be even closely simulated by a subtractive color model (CMYK; a system which merely reflects the light that falls upon it and which is completely dependent upon the pigments used). So because each device involved in graphics has its own "color gamut" a system is used to translate the color values called for in one device to the "nearest match" or "most approprite" that can be produced in another. There are, of course, various arguments and technical considerations which present multiple algorithms for doing that.
Pantone is a proprietary commercial brand name. It's a company that originally produced spot-color inks for offset printing, and a "matching system" for consistently mixing them, dating back to long before graphics computers.
CMYK is an abreviation for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black); the four ink colors used in "process color" printing. You probably remember from childhood the concept of "primary colors" (red, blue, yellow) being able to mix "any other" color (red and yellow for orange; yellow and blue for green; red and blue for purple). Well, just think of CMYK as the more accurate, formalized, standardized "primary colors" used in full-color commercial printing.
It's not really about "Pantone and CMYK"; it's about spot-color versus process-color. Do a Google for that. There is so much material out there about this, it's a wonder there is still so much confusion about it.

  • How do I superimpose a darkfield image on brightfield image and then chose color range from the darkfield and only keep what I selected in the color range?

    Hi
In the previous version of photoshop I was able to superimpose images of brightfield and darkfield  insitu hybridization.  I would adjust both images to same size and resolution.  The darkfield image I would change the hue saturation to red so that now all the brighspots appeared red.  Then I would open a new photoshop image and then drag the brightfield first into the new panel and then drag the red darkfield image on the brightfield.  So now you can only see the red dark field layer on the top,  THen using range I would select the bright red spots on the dark field and press delete.  This would keep all the dark red spots on the brightfield image and all the other dark spots from the dark filed would disappear.  This way I would superimpose all the brightest red spots from the dark field image on the brightfield image and this way I would get red signals on the bluish brightfiled image.  I am unable to do this using photoshop on CS6. I am pasting the darkfiled image on the brightfield image (rather than dragging them) . Then using range when I choose the color range and then hit delete button I am unable to clear the unwanted dark field sections.  Can anybody tell me what I should do on the new Adobe photoshop 6 (64 bits).
    Thanks

That question may be better answered with a goolge search.  It not something most Photoshop users would be doing. More science then normal image processing.

  • Color Range doesn't work correctly with latest update

as the title suggests, I'm having difficulty using the color range tool properly. It worked perfect just before the most recent update (13.1) and now works very strangely.
It seems to select whatever color it feels like except the one I need. And then it is very very selective if it will even select anything at all. I'm not sure how else to explain this so it is clearer and easier to be understood. I will post the System Info from Photoshop below.

Possibly you are missing something in the way you apply this command. Here's how I use it to select patchy clouds with ragged edges and continuously varying shades of gray:
Select the eyedropper tool on the Toolbar and on the options bar set the sample size to 3x3.
Activate the Color Range command. Activate the "selection" radio button and choose "none" in the selection preview. In the "select" box, choose "sampled colors".
Set a trial fuzziness of,say,50. Click with the eyedropper on a point in the midst of the color you want to select. That's your "base" color.
Then switch to the "Color Added" (plus) eyedropper, holding the left mouse button down while dragging it over areas deviating from the base color but which you want included.
If there are non-contiguous areas with still different colors you also want to include, release the mouse and move the cursor to those areas before dragging again.
All the while, keep an eye on the dialog box display which shows what you've selected, albeit crudely. If you pick up unwanted colors, switch to the "subtract from sample" (minus) eyedropper and drag it over those areas.
When you think you've got it about right, experiment with the fuzziness slider to see if you can improve things by increasing or decreasing fuzziness.
Don't re-use the plain eyedropper unless you want to start all over again. Optionally, instead of switching among the 3 eyedroppers, you can activate only the plain eyedropper but use it with SHIFT to add or ALT to subtract.

  • How do I select a color range like in Photoshop OR copy/move a layer into the mask of another layer?

    Hi there,
I'm trialling Photoshop Elements and wanting to use a black and white (grey scale) layer that I've made as a mask in another layer and don't know how to do it in Elements.  In Photoshop, I'd do this (there maybe a better way in PS to do it, but I haven't discovered it yet)...
Click the layer i've created that I intend to use as a mask
    Select All
    Copy
select layer that I want the mask to be applied to
click the Add Layer Mask button (at the bottom of the Layers window)
click the mask icon so it is highlighted (and the image isn't)
    switch to Channels view
highlith the Layer Mask beneath the R,G,B layers and make it visible
    Paste
    make it invisible again
    switch back to layers.
This works and retains the full range of transparency for semi transparency and soft edges of the mask etc.
Alternatively, I can select a Color Range, but that doesn't seem to be available in PS Elements.
So, how do I achieve the same result in PS Elements?
    Thanks for your help
    Jonno

Perfect!   Thanks very much R_Kelly.  That does exactly what I was hoping to do.
    Cheers

  • Color Range doesn't work properly in CS3

    Hi there,
I have a problem with CS3. Since a few weeks I can't use properly "Colour Range" feature.
Especially for bright colour the Colour Range doesn't select what I want to select. For example I want to select a bright cloud and can't select it with Colour Range. Of course I checked if there is any information or I have a burn area.
I use several different setting but I still have the problem.
    I used 8/16 bit, Adobe RGB/sRGB
    At Colour Range I use:
    - Sampled colours
    - Selection
    - Fuzziness: how much I need it
    - Selection preview: None
    I need help...
    Thanks

  • Color Range "Local Group"

    Hello together,
I just wonder what the new feature within the Select: Color Range Dialogue means.
I'm using the german version, so I don't know how it's named in english, but it should be something like "local colorgroup". It's the only new feature in this dialogue.
So, what exactly does this feature? i tried for some time but I can't figure.
As far as I thought in the beginning I can reduce the selected color values a bit more smooth in adition to the tolerance-bar.
But than, sometimes, after checking the box for this feature, my selection gets twice as big as it was before?
Can anyone help me out of my misery. :)
    Thanks a lot
    Philip

From what I can tell, it seems that the function will be more tolerant the closer it is to the click point.
In other words, it's kinda of like a radial gradient spanning out from the point that you click. It will select more for the area closer to the click point and gradually less as it moves away.
This may or may not be what it does, this is just what I have found from fooling around with it.

  • What are the ranges for correct skin tones using RGB%?

What are the ranges for correct skin tones using RGB%?  Used to using a scale from 0 to 255.  But with LR it's RGB  , I know 100% RGB is white.  What do you use for %?

While I whole heartedly agree that we should not be constrained to hard and fast numbers for accurate skin tones ... LR does offer an RGB color readout ... I am assuming they made those percentages available for the user to monitor the breakdown of specific color values for a reason ... so we could have an indication of how a specific color in an image will be reproduced ...
I liken this to using a speedometer ... while many experienced drivers in well tuned vehicles can travel on the highway at the prescribed legal speed limit without really monitoring the readout on the dashboard ... however, there are times when they would like to verify the speed at which they are traveling ... the RGB color percentage readout in LR is no different ... just a source of information to verify you are achieving what you desire ...
Again, going by specific numbers in this instance, I believe, could lead to problems ... there may be times when you may desire or actually need to adjust skin tones ... even though a pleasing WB has been achieved ... the relationship of R, G and B can be used to get you there.
From what I have researched and put into practice with LR the following seems to be a good starting point and the data was borrowed from "the pixelation" blog:
    R: highest %
    G: middle %
    B: lowest %
To get a little more specific. In general,
    R: Y + (15-20)
    G: average of R and B
    B: R – (15-20)
For example, the following values represent common Caucasian skin tones using the rules above:
    * R: 80%; G: 70%; B: 60%. R is 20 points higher than B, and G is midway between R and B. That’s perfect.
    *  R: 86%, G: 78%; B: 70% also reflects a nicely balanced skin tone.  Again, G is midway between R and B, and R is 16 points higher than B. This, too, illustrates a great relationship among the colors.

  • Adobe is charging extra to access full color range of Pantone inks

I pay the professional fee of nearly $60. per month (in perpetuity, at least till the price goes up) for my Creative Cloud subscription. It takes me months to learn all the new bits and pieces of each new function and revised functions of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Acrobat overtime they update. This is very costly.
Now, I spent hours trying to assign a Pantone ink color from my Pantone book to a new logo last Sunday only to find I need to pay additional to Adobe to access the new colors in the Pantone books I purchased this year (I loyally replace my books every few years to be sure my colors are accurate). Pantone ink colors are necessary to a print designer's repertoire. I show these colors to clients so they see exactly what they ill be getting. I find it outrageous that Adobe is trying to squeeze yet more money for something that is so essential to professionals that it should be included without extra work or extra money.

At the bottom of the color range dialog box, there is a drop down menu.  Select "None" rather than grayscale.

  • Color range selection + layer styles

    Hello--
    Help me if you can!
I have had it on good authority (my photoshop instructor) that color range selection hasn't been working correctly for some time.
    I'm using CS2, version 9.0.2 on an IMac os X version 10.5.8.
I am often working with multiple layers that are not similar at all.  When I have one layer active and do a color selection, it may also select the color range on inactive layers.  Then, if I do a fill, for example, it may affect areas on other layers that were inadvertantly color selected.  I know there are ways to ask photoshop to perform a function on all layers, but I don't see this as an option or setting with color range selection.  I had started to assume it was sort of like crop, which affects all layers, but when I asked, my teacher says it should only be selecting/affecting the layer that is active.
I found I can deal with this by 'closing the eyes' (making non-visible) the other layers...but that is a hassle and sometimes hides exactly what I need to see.
Then noticed, just lately, that when I use a layer style, it is no longer showing up on my layer palette.  Maybe I don't understand correctly, but I thought any layer style addition would show up on the palette under the name of that layer.  If I happen to remember that a particular layer used a layer style, I can still click on the layer styles icon and alter it, but it isn't displaying on the layer palette any more--so I cannot toggle or discard the effect simply, and it is hard to know why a layer looks the way it does without that information.
Could be I'm corrupted and need to deinstall/reinstall?  Is there something I'm missing about these functions , or something I accidentally changed?  I would really appreciate any help or information.

Yes your instructor is wrong, it always selects visible pixels, and always has. You can however create a selection before you go into Color Range, and it will only work within that selection though.
If you want Color Range to work in precisely the same way as it always did in the old versions you need to make sure that you ..
    • Highlight a non masked layer and
    • Uncheck the somewhat bizarrely entitled "Localised Color Clusters" checkbox
The changes to Color Range happened a few versions ago, to my memory it was with CS4 .  The main improvement was that they made it more powerful with the capability to produce better more refined selections. They also unfortunately made the daft mistake of making the command work DIFFERENTLY depending on whether you have a masked or a non masked layer selected. This is not very logical really because it just causes confusion, and doesn't really achieve anything constructive in my opinion. No one who knows what they are doing wants to modify an existing mask using Color Range.

  • Select Color Range not Working

i have been using adobe photoshop for over 10 years and suddenly, when i try to select color range, nothing is showing up as selected. even with a simple black and white image, with white or black as the sampled color, nothing gets selected. i don't if something changed in the application or if it is somehow not working correctly on mine. please help.

    Hi,
What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Nothing seems to be selected in the preview or when you actually exit color range?

  • Selection by color range and sampled colors

    Hello!
I'm selecting areas using 'Color Range' and I was wondering if there is a way to view/edit the list of sampled colors (I've seen an option to load/save that list, but I'm looking for a simple way to view it inside Photoshop).
    Thanks!!

I don't see anything in the interface that does this and I don't know if it is possible with other (external) means. Save and Load simply saves your settings (current choice of Fuzziness, Range, etc.)
The predefined color and tone choices in Color Range are not the equivalent of sampling a color with the color picker but rather calculations based on algorithm such as the one used in the Selective color to find colors based within a certain hue or tonal range. And the available choices give you all possible primary hues.
I'm not sure how practical what you want would be - I can't imagine for what would you need this but if that's what yo want, why don't you create a small image painted with the colors of the list of colors you want to use. Then make sure to have both images opened next to each other, apply Color Range on your original image and sample the colors from the other.

  • Lab Color Range

    Hi
In Photoshop the a and b values in Lab color range from -128 to 127, but on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lab_color#Range_of_L.2Aa.2Ab.2A_coordinates) they are -0.86 to 0.98 and -1.07 to 0.94 respectively. Is this just a usability thing in Photoshop? Can I plot the Photoshop values on a graph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CIExy1931.svg) by using ratios to convert the values?
    Thanks!
    Chris

    Hello Chris,
What are you trying to do? Do you want to get into all the math and complexities of 3 dimensional space and Euclidean Distances or are you interested in understanding and using LAB for practical purposes. If it's the latter, then there are a lot of tutorials floating around and the Photoshopper's bible on lAB - a book by Dan Margulis called "The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the World's Most Powerful Color Space". If however you want to get into all the math and science, you would probably be better off checking out the CIE org.

  • Color Range Selection using Lab values

Is there a way to select pixels in Photoshop based on given Lab values? I am using Select --> Color Range with a specified "fuzziness" threshold, but I'd rather make the selection based on specific Lab values instead of random pixels that I choose with my eye dropper. Is there a way to do this in Photoshop, or does anyone know of a plug-in that might do this?
Also, if I end up having to use the basic Color Range tool, I'd like to know what "fuzziness" means. I understand what it does (selects more or less colors based on the threshold around the point you choose with your eyedropper), but what is that based on? A color difference (delta E) value around that point maybe?
I am using Photoshop CS3 v10.0 on a Windows XP machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Ellen

It may be helpful to compare the Color Range command with the Magic Wand Tool. A Magic Wand "selection" is 100% opaque and all pixels outside its tolerannce have zero opacity. So the selected pixels are either totally selected or totally unselected. There is no partial selection.
Not so with the Color Range command. The pixel clicked establishes the "base" color. Whereever that exact color occurs in the image, it is totally selected (100% opaque). The degree to which other pixels are selected (their opacity) depends on the Fuzziness setting.
At zero Fuzziness, all pixels other than those with the base color are totally unselected (zero opacity). As the Fuzziness setting increases, pixels with values other than the base value begin to be selected, but not 100%. There is a bell-shaped (Gaussian) curve of opacity centered on the base value and dinminishing on either side of it.
The breadth of the Gaussian curve (let's define that as the color value difference between 50% opacity on the left and 50% opacity on the right is directly proportional (not equal to) the Fuzziness. Double the Fuzziness and you double the breadth. Marching ants appear at the 50% opacity point. But be careful interpreting this because with the Magic Wand, for example, the 50% opacity point occurs at the same point as zero and 100%, there being no gradation of opacity at the edge of a Magic Wand selection.
You need to be aware also that the Color Range command operates in each color channel and the deviation from base value is determined by the most restrictive of the three channels. If a pixel is within Fuzziness limits for one channel but not another, it doesn't pass muster. And, yes, CR uses Lab colors, but you need not be in Lab mode.

  • Removing a selection area from a color range selection...

I have an icon I am working with and I have used the color range selection tool to select the background however there are some pixels that were selected that are actually on the inside of the icon itself. I want to remove that selected area. I had do I remove the selected are inside the icon? What about adding pixels to the selection area? How would that be done?

    Good day!
The shift- and alt-key usually allow Selection tools to be used to add or subract from an existing Selection.
Could you post the image itself?
Because I suspect in a case like this it would be bette to work with a Selection based on channel/s. Maybe as the basis for a Solid Color Layer.

    Pfaffenbichler

  • Color range selection preview

I'm at a new job with a new iMac (Mavericks 10.9.4) and CC. I like using the "color range" selection tool in Photoshop, but I cannot figure out how to make the selected area just show as a marquee area - I don't want it to show as White Matte/Black Matte, etc. - JUST as a marqueed area, with my 4c image still visible. Ideas?

I just have to ask - why?
Once you commit by pressing OK you get your marquee. But the purpose of the selection preview is to show you precisely what will be selected, and a marquee doesn't do that. It would defeat the whole purpose of a preview. This would be easier to answer if we knew what you're trying to do.
