What is Connection in Oracle 10g Database?
Please let me know what is connection term in Oracle 10g Database in detail?
Thanks,
Waheed.
Network Connections
Oracle Net Services is Oracle’s mechanism for interfacing with the communication
protocols used by the networks that facilitate distributed processing and distributed
databases.
Connections and Sessions
Connection and session are closely related to user process but are very different in
meaning.
A connection is a communication pathway between a user process and an Oracle
instance. A communication pathway is established using available interprocess
communication mechanisms (on a computer that runs both the user process and
Oracle) or network software (when different computers run the database
application and Oracle, and communicate through a network).

Connection to Oracle 10g database failing
Not sure if I should post this here or on another newsgroup, but I am having a problem trying to connect, using WebLogic Server 9.2, to an Oracle 10g database (10.2.0.2), that has been upgraded from Oracle 9i.
I can connect to the same database using WebLogic 7.0.2, and I can also connect using WebLogic Server 9.2 to an Oracle 9i database.
I keep getting the 'Authentication denied: Boot identity is not valid' error, but I know that the username/password I am using in the boot.properties file is valid, because I have connected to the same database using WebLogic Server 7.0.2.
I suspect that the error could be with the drivers I am using, but I have checked and I have the latest oracle jar file in the WL_HOME/server/lib directory.
I did previously have a version of WebLogic 7.0.2 on the machine but this was deleted.
On the database in question the listener logs show that a connection was established, but that's it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Simon Kearn wrote:

Facing issue in Connecting to Oracle 10g database in OBIEE+
Hi All
I have done the BASIC installation of OBIEE+ on Windows [local system].
I have tested for all the services running and they are running fine.
As Oracle 10g is our databse i need to connect to the databse.
Please guide me with step by step process on how to establish the connection.
I went through the tutorail but still failed to establish the connection.
Thanks in advance,

Edited by: user10511722 on Dec 14, 2008 11:40 PMAs John says you need some sort of Oracle client to connect to the database.
I use instant client, with ODBC options, and SQLPlus (to test connectivity)
Available here
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
You will also need to copy your tnsnames.ora into the directory you install in, and set the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to point to it. -
ODBC Error while Siebel Server try to connect to Oracle 10G
We have managed to get through with the configuration of siebel server on HP Unix. However before we get to the Database configuration, we are encountering errors with ODBC connection to oracle 10g database. We are able to connect to oracle using sql plus but odbc connection is failing. We verified for patches, missing files, directory access rights - but no clue as of now.
Our error says:
Logging into "ENTSIA_DEV_DAN" as "sadmin"....
/user/lib/hpux32/dld.so: Unable to find library 'libclntsh.so'.
ODBC error IM0003 in SQLConnect:
(DataDirect){ODBC lib} specified driver could not be loaded
Unable to login using specified odbc parameters
This has become a show stopped for us and we are strugging with this for the past three days without much direction.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.Hi,
I guess your DataDirect Driver which gets registered during Database Configuration has some problems.
Can you check whether the DSN is using the proper Driver?
Also, the username through which you are logging in to start Siebel Services must have proper rights.
Many times on Windows platform i have noticied this error in ODBC due to improper user rights. If the rights are not proper, the DataDirect Driver fails to get loaded & throws similar error.

Can't Create the ODBC connection for Oracle 10g
Hi,
I am working with Oracle 10g Database Release 2 in windows XP professional. I am trying to create an ODBC connection for oracle but become failure because its generating the following errors:
system error code 998
could not locate the setup or translator library
Please help me how can I solve this problem and create the ODBC connection for oracle 10g database.
Best Regards,mwz wrote:

could not locate the setup or translator libraryThe symptom described is typical of an incorrect system env PATH setting (used by the data source admin tool), compared to that of the Oracle Home (specifically, path $OH/bin). The odbc driver config routine will search directories listed in PATH variable for necessary libraries (Client dll's). If some library fails to load (from e.g. oraoci*.dll or oraclient10.dll) it will probably error out, as in your case.
Are you creating the odbc dsn on the databse server host or on some other machine? I.e. are you using the db host as a client or not? -

Connect Oracle 10g client to the Oracle 10g database behind a firewall
I need to connect an Oracle 10g client to the Oracle 10g database (windows server 2003 box) behind a firewall. I ran into this problem: Port redirection. Port redirection requires the Oracle client to connect to the database using a different port (usually a randomly selected TCP port) than the default or originally configured one. If there is no firewall between the server and the client, port redirection will not affect the actual connection. However, if port redirection does occur with the server behind a firewall, the client will be likely to suffer from a connectivity failure. The reason is simple: the newly assigned port based on port redirection is often blocked by the firewall. Such failures are not uncommon on Windows platforms.
I don't know how to stablished an unique TCP port.
I Enabled USE_SHARED_SOCKET on the Oracle database server, windows registry. Acording to what I read,that will force the server machine to share its port 1521 and thus all clients will stay on that port when connecting to the database. Noticeably, port redirection will not occur with USE_SHARED_SOCKET enabled, but that's true in oracle 8 or oracle 9. In oracle 10g this solution doesn't work.
I will apreciate any help about this. Please!
Thanks in advanced.Three solutions in order of preference
1 Use Connection Manager on the server (only installed using a Custom Install). This will tunnel all traffic through a single port. It will also allow you to configure allowable nodes
2 Set up shared server to use a fixed port. Disadvantage: shared server has overhead and the number of connections is limited
3 Use shared_sockets. Disadvantage: when you stop the listener everyone is disconnected.

Win32 Oracle 10g Database Server Installation problems
Hello,
I have recently installed the Oracle 10g Database Server for Win32. The installation seemed to be successful. I used the Enterprise option and all the suggested defaults. Ihave the following services installed and started after the installation:

I go to the DOS console and type:
c:> sqlplus scott/tiger@ORCL
and I get:
ERROR: ORA-28000: the account is locked
I did this right after I restarted my computer.
When I use the Enterprise Manager at:
http://localhost:5500/em/
I get for ORCL:

Status Pending Since: Unavailable
Seems that I can never get the database started properly?! When I press the Startup/Shutdown button I get:
Current Status: open
This is the correct current database status, although it doesnot match the current status in the sitemap page
What does this mean? Do you think this may contain the clue to the answer to this problem?
When I restart the Database I get the same status: unavailable.
I need your help to resolve this problem. The alternative is to revert back to Oracle 9i DB Server. Thank you in advance.

sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba

Oracle 10g Database conflicts with HTMLDB
Hai all,
I have encountered a strange conflict when I am trying to work out with Oracle 10g database and the famous HTML DB.
It is like this:
I have a 10g DB installed and an ASP application that works on this 10g instance via "Microsoft ODBC driver for oracle" perfectly.
Now I have downloaded and installed the 10g Companion CD and installed the HTML DB 1.5 along with the mandatory Apache web server. Good!! I could scrawl through the database using the HTML DB, creating applications, forms, items and etc fancy things without any issues.
The problem that I found was:
The ASP based application that used to work initially now is erroring out saying that "TNS could not resolve service name".
I thought that the Listener might be damaged or the ASP site was damaged or the Microsoft ODBC driver files were damaged and several other vauge guessings.
I have tested the issue in several ways (reinstalled oracle, the DB, the ASP Applicaton, re-configurin listener in a variety of ways) but every time installing BLINDLY the companion CD too. Nothing seem to work.
Then I recollected that the same issue I have encountered in the past with the installation of Oracle 8i and Developer 2000, where the TNS listener configured by the former damages the one configured by the later and vice-versa.
Basing on this past reminiscence, I finally stopped installing Companion CD over the Oracle installation and carried out the DB installation and the ASP based app. And everything worked fine.
CAN anybody tell me what is going wrong with these two oracle products(Oralce 10g DB and the HTML DB+Apache)?
WHY always the installation of a CLIENT SW (Developer, HTML DB etc) damages the connection with the database via ODBC drivers?
Many Thanks in advance.
RaviDera Mr. Tyler,
Thanks for your reply...I have implemented the solution that you have given for the TNS Listener conflict and everything works fine...
Here I have one more thing thats not working as I thought. do kindly help me out.
My requirement is to show the list of available storage drives (say C:, d:, e: etc on windows) available on the database server. Let me eloborate my problem well....
i have a Java App that executes a specific SQL script to create a tablespace, a user and the required db objects that my applicaiton needs.
if the Java App runs on the same machine where the oracle instance is running, the Java app pops up a list of available drives on the machine, creates a directory for the tablespace datafiles on the drive selected from the above list box, then runs the script which creates the tablespace and the rest of the things.
But if i run the Java app from another machine on the network, then my BLIND java app is popping up the drives of the local machine but NOT those from the oracle server machine and creates the folder on the local machine but not on the Oracle server and obviously the rest of the phases (tablespace creation itself) are failing as the required folder is not found on the oracle server machine.
the work arounds that i am thinking are:
a) use java ->
get the IP of the oracle server machine ->
use some java api such as java.net, java.io etc ->
create the required folder on the server machine instead of the local machihe
ISSUE: Java network programming is too tough for me(excuse me for this..i am not too good!!)
b) use some oracle sql or pl/sql api s to do the same
ISSUE: not found one!!!!
c) create a java stored procedure/function to get the list of drives of the oracle server and return as a string variable. then call this proc from the Java app once connected to the database....
ISSUE: i have created the SO-CALLEd java func. no compilation or loading errors. but there is no o/p either. but the same code when i run as a java class is showing the desired o/p. here is the code piece...can you please help me out!!!
-------Java Stored Function------
import java.io.*;
public class HDDLister
public static String listDrives()
String rootsList = "Available Roots: ";
try
File[]roots = File.listRoots();
for (int i=0;i<roots.length;i++)
rootsList += roots.toString();
rootsList += "#";
catch(Exception ex)
rootsList = ex.toString();
return rootsList;
-------Command to publish the Funciton-------
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION HDDLISTER
RETURN VARCHAR2
IS
LANGUAGE JAVA
NAME 'HDDLister.listDrives() return java.lang.String';
and finally the point of the problem is, once we show the drives available on the server machine to the user and the user selects a drive, how to create a folder on the server machine???
Thousands of thanks in advance

Problem to connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 at Vista sp2
Introduction
Hi guys, good day... NEED RESCUE!! SOS!! Hmm.. i have trouble been 1 weeks trying connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 on window vista sp2. Actaully im very new at Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 but i got a project is going to build up system database and i figure out Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 can use free so i just chows these appication to be my project. I been search around internet and there is several things i was found about the connection but i has try and tried still it wont work out.
Things i found and learned
Oracle
1. I have download Oracle 10g XE and installed in my windows vista sp2.
2. I notice the Oracle Developer Tools is needed for VB2010 (To add reference 'Oracle.DataAccess'). So i was downloaded ODT11beta and installed
3. I also edit TNSNAMES to following below:
OraDb =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = shin-PC)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
4. My sqlnet like following below:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
5.I have try tnsping OraDB and its works.
6. I monitoring task manager and OracleServicesXE is running.
7. ora_dba is added in Group.
Problem in SQLPLUS
When i try connect SQLPLUS in cmd i get ERROR: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
i . In cmd i type sqlplus and enter then i been ask for username and password.
ii. After i insert my username and password and enter then i get the error of ORA-12560.
Visual Basic 2010
1. First i created my project, drawing label and button for test connection.
2. Then, i add reference Oracle.DataAccess into my project.
3. I type following script into my vb form:
Imports System.Data
Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client
Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Types
Public Class Logon
Private Sub cmdLogon_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdLogon.Click
Dim oradb As String = "Data Source = OraDb; User Id = system; Password = shin;"
Dim conn As New OracleConnection(oradb)
conn.Open()
Dim cmd As New OracleCommand
cmd.Connection = conn
cmd.CommandText = "select SName from Staff where SName = shin"
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
Dim dr As OracleDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader()
dr.Read()
lblOra.Text = dr.Item("SName")
conn.Dispose()
End Sub
End Class
Problem in VB2010
When i run my project and press the button i get error message ORA-12514: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified at conn.Open()
Extra Question*
1. Im notice in my netbook xp home sp2, before i install ODT11beta my sqlplus look fine thought cmd but after i installed ODT11beta its same problem with my Vista sp2 now. Get error ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error :( I tried uninstall ODT11beta again and restart its work fine again. Which i really dun understand. Izzit the version ODT11 is not suitable for 10g xe? And i dunno this problem is related with my connection between oracle 10g xe and vb2010 or not. So confuse@@
2. I wish to know more about connect between Oracle and VB, is there still a things i miss?(I mean steps or configuration that should i done)
3. Or i just lower my VB version could make more easy? If yes, what version VB should i use that could work out with oracle 10g xe?
4. Sorry for too bad my english but i really wish somebody could help me. Please try to understand my written or you could ask me mean if dont understand. Im stuck!! Stuck feel not really that good.....

Izzit ok? I notice there is no listed OraDb. but tnsping OraDb seem fine.
Actually there is somethings as a newbie i wondering long time alreadly ><
1. The origin of tnsname.ora is no OraDb or ORCL but i just simple add it by open tnsname.ora with notepad. Im just not sure it is function or not.
Also please check at my TNSNAME.ORA:

How to create ODBC connection between Oracle 10g and MS SQL Server
Hi,
Can someone help us with the steps to create an ODBC connection between Oracle APPS using Oracle 10g database and MS SQL Server.
Requirement is to extract the transactional data from MS SQL Server on a daily basis and dump it into Oracle tables for an interface to be run. Currently it is being done through Dataloader tool which we feel is causing the data issue with Arabic characters. We want to create the ODBC directly between Oracle and MS SQL Server and check if the data is being pulled correctly.
The data is in sql server 2000 which has data in Arabic_CI_AS character set which is moved to Oracle 10.2.0.3 database with characterset AL32UTF8. The table data is moved to oracle using the dataloader 3.6 standard edition licensed version. We cannot change the character set of Sql Server 2000.
Please help
Thanks
ShanilHi,
If you're trying to PULL data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you wouldnt use Oracle ODBC driver for that, so you may want to post in the Heterogeneous Services forum instead:
Heterogeneous Connectivity
If you're trying to PUSH data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you could use ODBC but most folks use OLEDB for that, and the following note on MOS should help:
How to Create a Sql Server Linked Server With The Oracle Provider for OLE DB (Doc ID 191368.1)
As with any NLS related issue, the first thing to do is dump the codepoints of the data in the Oracle database to see if it is stored validly, rather than relying on what the data "looks like" from some tool or other. It's best to check a single row, with only a few characters in it if you can, and you can do that via
SELECT DUMP(<columname>,1016) FROM <tablename> WHERE ...
Hope it helps,

Oracle 9i R2 Client on a PC having Oracle 10g Database
Can I install and use Oracle 9i R2 Client on a PC having Oracle 10g Database on Windows XP Professional?
The reason for that; is because I can't do Export and Import operations from the mentioned PC (which having Oracle 10g) to other two remote databases where they have Oracle 9i R2 database.OK, I have Windows 2000 Server and when I go to SQL*Plus and connect to my database, it's showing for me this:
Connected to:
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.1.0 - Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Oracle Data Mining options
JServer Release 9.2.0.1.0 - Production
Also when I launch the OEM and goto Help-->About, it's showing the same version as above.
But when I look to other things, it's like this:
Oracle Home Directory: "C:\oracle\ora91"
System Services "services.msc": "OracleOraHome91Agent", "OracleOraHome91TNSListener", and "OracleServiceREPORTS" (REPORTS is my Oracle database name).
So how could I know what is my actual Oracle version?
